I'm going to attempt to port CM7 to our T989's. I've never started a port from scratch but worked on some Android->WM ports in the past.
From what I've read, it looks like the best way to port to a new device is to start with generic CM7 source and add our stock kernel. Then check what works and fix what's broken one step at a time.
If there are any expert devs out there that would be willing to lend a hand I would be grateful. If anyone knows a better method of porting, please let me know.
This is low priority with my current workload and a new baby at home but I enjoy learning.
Thats pretty much how I've ported themes in the past. I'll be happy to test for you
Nice to see people wanting to step up. Honestly though, im pretty sure CM7 is being worked on by very experienced devs. Spend time with your baby

Well I'll keep compiling but I'll keep the testing to myself... I doubt I'll have anything better than the experienced devs.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, and I only speak for myself, but I think most people here will be running AOKP, CM9, MIUI, or Chimera once the minor issues with those are ironed out. Unless you are planning to offer something different than those, I don't know if your work would be fully appreciated.
Not trying to be a d*ck, just being honest. I wouldn't want you to spend your time working on a rom that nobody is going to use.

Ignore everything this guy just said..
Yes we have some of the best roms available .. but those are only that great because of the developers who make them.
My advice is build and learn and ignore the haters .. maybe one day you'll have the next great rom.

to kind of continue this response and if you've never done a rom, you may be better off pulling the aokp or cm code and working on killing some bugs first. i'm sure there is plenty to work on. or maybe just do a kernel for one of those (i don't think there is a single oc kernel for either yet).

I would try out anything if it looked good. TDJ, Cyn, and huge developers wouldn't have made it anywhere if they were to take your advice. Go play in traffic.
I've been here since the T-Mobile MDA days.
Okay I'm not a noob per say, I know my way around. I'm 19 and in college getting a bachelor's in computer engineering. Like most of us other I'm the person people come for help with anything related to technology.
But recently I've been feeling like a huge n00b haha. I found a really good dev and he's only THIRTEEN. I feel like I've waisted my time lol.
I'm also starting to think of porting my own roms and what not to my phone.
Along with this great community I hope I am a to become a great developer.
So I know exactly how you feel. I've been a member since 2010 and altho gh I've come a long way there is always room for improvement.

Well first off welcome to the Android Community. You've definetely started in the right place with XDA. Rooting an android phone and getting a custom ROM is easier than ever now. I would suggest first scrolling to the top of this forum and doing a lot of research and self education. There are several things you need to have a basic understanding of before flashing roms. Look at the most wanted topics thread, The official Jelly Bean General Discussion thread, Terminology for the newbies. Check out this post as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1873873
In the end consider that Jelly Bean is still in the developmental stages and there can be bugs and workarounds to deal with. If you are new to Android, going with a solid custom ICS rom may be best for you so as not to spoil your Android experience.
Finally once you have made your decision head over to the Android rom development section ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1332 ) and look through the roms and choose the best one for your needs. Read the instructions and then read them again. Install exactly according to the directions in the thread from the rom you choose and enjoy ! Hope this helps a little at least. Happy Flashing ! :highfive:
The best thing to do is read, read, read. Knowledge is the best way to prevent accidents. The process for loading custom ROMs on this phone is simple but you'd be surprised how many "educated" people screw it up. Good luck.

And also if you need visual tutorials, just search on youtube and there's a bunch of videos showing yoi how to root, flash roms, etc. Always make sure what you are flashing is for this phone

I'll tell you a great ics rom which is called paranoid android. There is one by starskyrob in the development section. As far as JB in my opinion, the most stable is Paranoid android JB. I've flashed their latest rom and have had no sleeps of death or random reboots. This is going over 24 hours now and I did get 21 hours of battery for my first battery cycle. If you want more info send me a pm and ill link you some links. But yes read and watch a lot of youtube videos together ideas of what roms can do.

My 2 cents is that JB ROMs are not yet ready to act as daily drivers on the T989 for most of us.
The RRs and SODs continue as well as several other quirks.
I've been on and off the leading JB ROMs since mid-August and in most all cases I lost more features than I gained.
Thank God for the developers and early adopters who brave the bleeding edge for us all.
But I will wait in the safety of AOKP MS6 until I see something from Whitehawakx that's labeled "milestone" before I flash again.

All the ones I have tried so far I've had issues with, I would suggest something more stable like an ics for now. The JB roms look nice but they have issues with calls, random lockups and such.
So,first of all I'm running on cna 3.8.0 with faux mainline-smartreflex kernel, what do you think about this?is this a good choice? On my needs list for this phone, there are the smoothness, gaming performance and the battery life? Are there any suggestions for any rom/kernel that would be better according to my needs?
Cheers!

I agree. That's kind of the gift and the curse with flashing. On the other hand by doing so you get to experience and learn of other things you might want out of a ROM instead of what you have listed. People can recommend all day long, but your likes might be different.
With all that said, I'm running P.A. 2.99.6 and it's an awesome ROM. You should give it a go.

I'd like to introduce my first published ROM to the community.
-What is Infinity about?
The purpose of this ROM is for those who don't care much about dealing with bugs and waiting for updates or tweaks to get a daily driver. My project is to keep this as stock as possible because I believe that the touchwiz features are awesome. I'd like to keep the mods to a minimum to maintain functionality and keep the ROM as bug free as possible. Infinity fits perfectly as the name of this ROM as it allows YOU, the user, to make infinite choices to how you want your phone to feel and act like. While I am the chef, I feel its your resposibility to chose the themes and mods ypud like to add as you see fit.
- who this ROM is not for?
This ROM is not for those who are here to flame others or rudely criticize my work. While I accept suggestions and constructive criticism , I will not allow rudeness. Please feel free to post questions or concerns here as I may not ever get to my PMs. Enjoy.
Download instructions:
*download to SD
*backup ROM
*flash in recovery using favorite recovery method
If coming from another ROM I'd recommend wiping data . If coming from stock id still recommend wiping data but your willing to try and dirty flash.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for the sudden death of your phone if you flash this wrong or flash mods not compatible with this.

Will flash tonight! As long as you are working towards including AOSP lockscreen, contacts, and messenger, I will stick with you the whole way. As far as the power mods, can you include screenshot? I know you can hold power and home, its just easier if its in the power menu.
Running very fast and smooth so far. Did you take out the calendar widget? The app for it is there but no widget.
Awesome. Thanks for the feedback so far. Uh. I probably took the calendar widget out on accident. I will work on it tonight. Still at work. For now. You can push the calendar widget apk into system settings. Screenshot in power menu should be next then I assume. hopefully I get some time tonight if the wife does the come a call in'. I'll get some screenies also. I'd also recommend using faux stock kernel in the other thread for a boost. Been reading some good things about his mainline edition.

I have always envied team kang and their stock build since it includes lock screen options. I may have to call upon them and see if they'll assist me in my pursuit of aosp options. Ive youve ever used the sgs2 and the Juggernaut ROM you'd know how awesome the ROM control option was.

There's so much to say but trying to be respectful at the same time. Grrrrrrr. Do you really know what you're doing, or do you only understand the basics and know how to make a flashable zip rom? I'm being serious and not trying to be a ****... its just it seems like a.... pointless thread/rom... as of now. Of course when it can be a AOSP/TW ROM that's awesome, but now???!!! Just seems not very important. Again not trying to be a jerk, just speaking my mind.
You saying "uh. I probably took the calendar widget out on accident" makes me want to not flash the ROM, I understand trial and error but, that should be done before publicizing your work. I'm an A-Hole and this and that so be it, criticism sucks.

No I understand where you're coming from. My haste to get this out there superceeded my common sense. Also my poor word choice also can be a fault in people not wanting to try this. I am not completely new at this. Although I am not alone in creating a ROM using the kitchen. That is the difference between "original" android development in this forum and "android development". A few ROMs I've seen in this section were probably made using the kitchen ad out does the basic for you. The rest is actually knowing Smali and baksmali, compiling and dwcompiling of XML files and such. That isy weakness as I have to search countless forums and guides to find out how to do it in my own. Everyone started somewhere. As much as I want to pull this ROM now I feel I should be more careful in what I say and how I add mods and test them. I know nowadays people seek the ROMs that are "flashy" and have tons of features but it comes at a price. I am not just building for people but foe fun and foe myself. I do run my roms and therefore don't want to brick my own device. I appreciate the criticism as you are probably saying what others don't. Its all part of the learning process. On the other hand, there are plenty of awesome ROMs to choose from.

Thanks man. The journey will be long and difficult. Again I appreciate everyone's patience. I have some time tonight to mess around with some code. I believe I have the power menu figured out. And I wanted to ask. Do you guys prefer lidroid toggles which are customizable or something else. I preferably like the stock ones but something customizable could be added as a zip instead of a default. That is why I'd like to really dig into aroma which would allow maximum user customization but its gonna take more than one night of studying the tutorial and testing. I'll add back the calendar and hopefully have advanced power menu up. No eta yet.

I believe options in aroma would be the way to go. I personally would like the 15 toggle mod built in. I totally understand that you are learning as you go, i am just thankful to have someone working on this. After you put the calendar back in (lol) and add the basic power mods and such, i would be cool with you adding AOSP features one at a time. That would also help with testing.
