Hey guys. Basically my stepdad has an unused phone upgrade, but does not want to use it.
I would like to own the new HTC EVO 3D.
Can we extend his lines contract, get the phone and then put it on my line?
Also, I understand now that an additional $10 fee is on each smartphone for "data" now. When we signed up only my phone had this fee due to being a 4g phone, the other smartphone including his did not get charged because they signed up and got their phones the month before the change (my stepdad bought his phone online which is why he has an upgrade). Would my plan add a $10 fee to his line?
Any input appreciated. Thanks.
Nope, only the person using the phone has the $10 fee. But make sure sprint knows that you're switching phones and he will not have the Evo3d
Depending on what contract/plan he is on and if your also on that plan. If you are already on that plan and do not have a 'smart' phone, then it will only be the extra $10. However, with it being 'his' upgrade, you will have to have him upgrade 'his' phone and then activate his 'old' phone under you. If you are not on 'his' plan and you are going to add the line, then it will be $20 plus the $10 ($30) additional per month. But I'm pretty sure you can't use his upgrade for a different account. Great, now I'm confused....I think this is right, but a good rep in the store or him calling may be a better option. There are also some sprint guys on here that could answer it better.

So this is in fact a tangible plan for myself to obtain an HTC evo?
Thanks

I'm not going to lie. This has me confused as well.
We are all on a family plan.
He has a smartphone, I have a smartphone and we both have our own lines. I pay $10 because I had the htc evo, he does not pay the additional $10 currently.
I want to lengthen his contract, get the phone and NOT activate it on his line, instead, take it home and call and have it activated on mine.
If you are doing this anywhere that offers "Instant Rebates" you can get away with this. Just don't activate the phone on his line at all, otherwise he will be stuck with the $10 fee when he re-activates his "smart phone". Either order it online or at a store, just be sure they do not activate it at the store. Once you are home go online and activate it on your line, or via Sprint chat.
Yeah I did it the last year with the evo4g, you will be fine as long as he activates it with his and makes like two calls and then you call sprint to change ESNs, when you change them tell him to make sure they're taking off that $10/month charge. I'm pretty sure he'll never have to pay it but I guess they might have him pay it for one month. I guess you could look at it as a tax for getting a Evo3d
With the instant rebate he shouldnt have to activate it on his line. If he does he is boned. Assuming he had any smartphone that is on the systematically enforced list. There is no override, the system will from then, on force the $10 fee on any applicable smart phone, blackberry, android, wm etc etc. doesn't matter that its not 4g.
Trust me plenty of people have got jacked on this. The only exception is if its a TEP/ warranty replacement. It sucks, but it is what it is now. Co-worker activated her old Sanyo flip for a 3 day camping trip, came home and activated her BB curve again...boned with the $10 fees now. Only way it will go away is if she uses a non smartphone from now on. Soon as she activates any smartphone, the fee is back.

What kind of phone does your dad have? Is it a smartphone. I wonder if they begin implementing the $10 fee if you upgrade your line but keep the same smartphone.
once he upgrade to a new phone he will
Follow up:
You cannot upgrade a line and not activate the phone. I tried at multiple stores and if you purchase it online it activates when you first turn it on upon receiving it.
Anyhow, there is the basic answer if anyone knows a way around let me know
Ok heres what you do upgrade your dads phone to whatever phone you want then activate it like you would regularly do on his line then make like 2 calls then call sprint and ask them to switch each phone to the account you want it on.

Thanks for your input but I think you are missing a critical detail regarding this thread.
My dads phone is grandfathered into no $10 fee for his current smartphone, swapping to any other phone even for an instant will result in the $10 fee on his account for having a smartphone.
Your suggestion includes the idea of activating the upgrade phone on my dads account. I wanted to know if it was possible to upgrade and NOT activate so that he would not be charged $10 on his line AND I would get an upgrade phone. The end of this story is
TO MY KNOWLEDGE IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO UPGRADE A LINE AND NOT ACTIVATE THE PHONE AT ALL ON THAT PARTICULAR LINE.
AND
THIS ONLY REALLY MATTERS IF THE LINE BEING UPGRADED IS GRANDFATHERED IN TO NOT PAYING $10 FOR A SMARTPHONE AND THAT PERSON CURRENTLY HAS A SMARTPHONE.
He will only get charged once unless the phone that gets swapped with his upgrade is a smartphone that gets charges the 10$ then he will get charged every month

That's what he's trying to do. Dad has a smartphone and this guy is trying to get the 3d for himself. Activating the 3d on dads line, even for a minute, will trigger the $10 smart phone fee for for dad. Since he said dad already has a smartphone currently.
Some brick and mortar stores will do this, like best buy or radio shack. I bought a phone as a gift using an upgrade and held it for over 2 weeks before activating. Just call in and have them activate it on your line. Should be fine. Even from sprint.com should be ok. Just call in and have them release the phone from that line first, account owner may need to make the call. Then have it activated on your line.
Key is to not power it up until they are activating it to your line. Since if it's tied to his line, it will try to auto activate. When it connects to the network the first time, it will try to activate on whatever line sprint originally programmed it to. That line is changed when you call them in to activate it, after having it released from his line first.

First, I would like to thank you for understanding my thread and posts and posting something that makes sense.
I'd like to mention that I have a 3d now and I just bought it on craigslist. This thread is really just informative at this point as I do not have a problem to solve any longer.
When I went to radio shack I tried to tell them it was "a gift for my dad". They told me that basically they could not give me the phone without activating. The guy there is older and not really very savvy so it could just be that or the policy has changed. How long ago did you do the gift thing?
FYI asurion is out of evo4g now replacing claims with the evo3d so basically $100 to upgrade to evo3d

The last time I did this was last Christmas. But I just spoke to a Sprint rep least week about this. I activated an old flip phone for my son, as he trashed his phone (which is why he won't get a nice phone). The rep was telling me he had an upgrade (which I knew) and I could get myself the iPhone using his upgrade. Plus on Sprint users forum, lots of people bought iPhones and sold them with no issues. Just had to call in and release the phone from their account if anything.

I was planning on getting an EVO 3D, but with the speaker problem and reception problem I keep seeing gripes about I think I may pass even if it does get full root.
Problem is I have two accounts that are eligible for full upgrade.
One is on my wifes which still has Touch Pro2 on Sero (which she wants to stay on).
And mine with a 4G I bought on Ebay on Sero Premium + $10.00
If I were to buy two EVO 4G's from sprint and not activate them (I might keep one for back up and one I might sell (ideally seal)). Will I screw up the discounts because they are not activated?
I do expect my contracts to reset. But I believe it's activation that triggers discounts and new contract.
I just called sprint and they said I'd get full discounts with no activations. Even on the Line that does not have a matching EVO 4G plan.
I dont mean to thread jack but i believe im wondering the same thing...
im eligible for an upgrade but i dont want to get the 3D and my wife is perfectly content with her Epic...so if i were to use my upgrade to get an evo then sell it and make a little money (i got a baby on the way) would there be any fees attached to not activating the phone?
That's exactly what I asked and he said no extra fees. I think it helps that all the "rebates" are instant. He even said sell it on craigslist if you want.
I wonder which will yield more profit, a 4G or 3D
If you use your upgrade to buy the phone whether you activate it or not you will lose your upgrade.

Yo guys! So I'm a few days past my preliminary 30 day trial so to speak, and have the Epic Touch 4g. I love the phone, it's amazing, but I'm sure I speak for many when I say we're all really dissapointed with the antennas on this thing, and sprints coverage in general.
My 3G speeds never go past the 1.5 meg mark, and that in itself is rare. the 4g is non-existant, worse than 3g. At work I roam a good 75% of the time. And to make matters worse, all these rumors about the Touch 4g not supporting this new Rev B adds insult to injury.
So - I remember seeing a few people a while back, when I had the evo 3d (which i traded in for this phone) say they got out of their ETF by pretty much telling Sprint Reps that the recent fee increase voided their contract (i have a link, but since im a new user I cant post the link until i have 8 posts, search around youll find more info on this)
So I'm SERIOUSLY considering attempting this, and just jumping ship and going to another carrier. We only have until the 11th it seems to try and get out of the contract (you have 30 days to attempt this, fee increase was implemented on the 11th of sept i believe).
What do you guys think? Im contemplating sticking around till the 7th to see what the big announcement from Sprint will be, but I doubt whatever changes will be immediate and we'll start seeing better data anytime soon..
Verizon would be great obviously, theyre the fastest out there as far as I know, but of course the most expensive. Att & T mobile I dont know much about, dont know how good their coverage is in my area (las vegas, nv). I get such a good employee discount with sprint, theyre cheap, the phone is great, i just wish we had better coverage!!
we actually have till the 9th, my mistake!
While it is still technically possible you will have to be a bulldog with them. I did it but I set it up nearly a month ago. In that month they've had meetings and been sent memos specifically telling them NOT to let you out and that they don't HAVE to let you out. Not only that, but, the most damning thing: They've had a month of practice dealing with people on the issue which they are instructed (by default) to not let you out.
However if you stick to them, follow up and just make life in general very annoying for them (get names and direct numbers, follow up with the same exact people...that'll get old to them fast) you can still get out...or you can luck out and find one of the few people that didn't get the memo.
EDiT: Derp. If you have the ET4G you agreed to the new contract terms. Even if you were a bulldog and constantly up their ass and got an uninformed CSR you still wouldn't get out
...though I have heard that they will boot you out of contract for roaming too much (00001.PRL, ahem)
It doesn't work anymore. You can call and try to start the process but word is that Sprint is refusing to allow anyone out of the ETF because of the fee increase.
I don't know why it took you this long to realize that the service doesn't work. If it is the phone you should just exchange it for a Motorola Photon. They have great reception.
Eh, its not that I didnt know the service was shoddy, its just I was hoping I would have better service with the epic touch than with the evo 3d, which I kinda am actually, like I said the epic touch roams at work, but the evo 3d would roam A LOT more. Not to mention the horrible call quality
But, like I said, I'm past the 30 days so I cant exchange it for another phone, as far as I know anyway..
A lot of people here would exhange a Motorola Photon for you Epic Touch. They might even throw in a couple of bucks to sweeten the deal. Just ask.
On a side note my reception with the Epic Touch is crappy too. A few roaming and drop calls because of weak signal. My old Photon never had that problem.
I'm good man, I appreciate you trying to help me out, but like I said, I love the phone, and if Im staying with Sprint I think id like to keep this phone.
But if theres a way out, and other people are considering it, it's worth thinking about. I mean Ive read through all the threads on here that constantly complain about sprints service and coverage, but the phone overall seems to be getting rave reviews.
Im guessing you have one and love it as well?
I use the phone more as a multimedia than as a phone. The Photon has a problem displaying natural colors and blacks so I am force to abandon it. If they ever decide to address that problem (which I think is software wise) I would buy the Photon again. The Epic Touch is great as a multimedia device. As a phone, it fails miserably. I tolerate it.
There's no way out, sorry. You should have left within the first 30 days. Your only hope is that you roam enough for sprint to boot you.
Here's how you get out
ETF is $350... phone is worth about $350-$400 on craigslist. Sell the phone, use the money to pay for ETF.. 0 out of pocket. I do this all the time.
If you want to upgrade early: Open up new line and get new phone (evo 3d, epic touch, etc) Sell your old phone (always get a high end phone kept in mint condition) to pay for ETF on old line. You can usually get about $200ish for an old phone, even the EVO 4G still goes for $225 on craigslist. This worked perfectly when ETF was only $200, now it's $350, but it gets prorated I think after the 4th month. The only downside is you lose your # and that's the reason why I only give out my google voice #. So everytime I get a new #, nobody really knows I changed it, I just link it with my google voice #.
His ETF would be $200 because he was already past his 30 days (when he posted/started this thread), which means he started the contract before Sept 9. The $350 ETF only started after Sept 9.
Yeah **** it! I got an airrave on the way for work, where im constantly roaming, so Im just going to tough it out with sprint, if it gets real bad - ill pay the etf and sell the epic touch. Whatsitsname is correct, my ETF is 200 as far as I know, I always keep getting mis-information from sprint reps, but last I was told it was 200. I started service August 20th.
Ill just wait to see what comes out on T Mobile, Verizon, ATT, etc. My buddy has T Mobile and gets pretty consistent 3g speeds, 1.5 - 2 down, and the prices are the cheapest next to sprint as far as unlimited goes. Coverage is decent as well.
Otherwise, Verizon's speeds are awesome, my buddy hits 22 down on his thunderbolt, crazy. Id cancel my internet and just tether all the time if I had those speeds. The prices though.. not so much. Dont know what ATT has in store, I know they have decent 3g and SOME 4g capable phones, im honestly not too informed.
Hmm. I don't exactly want to leave Sprint but do you guys think I could use this as an easier way to get an ET4G from the 3d? I'm so over this 3d but I don't wanna shell out 500 to buy outright.
Lol I took my 3d in after it bonked itself and I want even a sprint customer(at the time) and they found out it was rooted(I played dumb because I got the phone off a friend) and they still bought the phone back for $150 so try and see what happens you never know. Now I did have a girl rep and I may have laid the flirt on(hey don't judge) but still you never know lol

How is it possible to have an Epic Touch and not have a $350 ETF? If he upgraded, he couldn't have done it before the 16th, which was AFTER the ETF was jacked up?
I might have a higher ETF, I have to call in and check, or sprint chat later today..
But I started service on the 20th of august with a 3d, swapped out for the epic touch as soon as it came out on sept 16th, a few days short of my trial 30 days.
I have an epic touch and a 200 etf. Only because I traded a friend though

Lucky loophole.
right! it is indeed 200, sprint rep just confirmed, so I lucked out. Im just going to wait it out with sprint, see what oct 7th brings, and if it gets real bad ill check out tmobile or att... or verizon. although Id prefer to go with something unlimited like t mobile / sprint, even if t mobile caps you.
Hi,
I am really getting sick of my data never actually working on my Sprint SGII. I was thinking about switching to Verizon. I really love the SGII & when at home on wifi, its a great device. My concern is that when I want to use data, it never works.
My work buddy has an Iphone (not for me) on Verizon & anytime I want to check something quickly, I have to borrow his phone to look something up.
While the sprint price is great, the data never works (voice is actually OK).
I heard the Nexus is not as good as the SGII in terms of the Exonus (sorry about the spelling) processor. I dont mind if its a little slower as long as the data works.
I am very interested in CM9 & had that on my sprint Evo.
Any advice would be great now that the Nexus & any bugs are out there.
It will cost me another $50 per month but if it works, then I guess its worth it?
Thanks,
Rich
I read the newest update for the CDMA Galaxy Nexus (though not official), gives it really strong data signal. All is great on my Nexus on T-Mobile.
I was a E4GT user, got it a few days after launch. It was a HUGE improvement over my EVO 3D #FAIL. Anyway, to answer your question I left sprint for the same reason you are thinking about leaving, DATA. Sprint is always talking about how they are fixing this and upgrading that, to me its to little to late. They are behind, the rush to be first with 4G clearly did not last beyond the EVO 4G, even then complaints about DATA were everywhere! What broke the camels back for me was the iphone, since its release sprint has taken away the main reason I stayed, yearly upgrades. I was a loyal 10+ year customer and because apple told sprint I cant have a yearly iphone (I dont even want the damn thing, a little conceded apple?). We ALL lost the yearly upgrade, that was sprints ONLY perk, IMO. So moving my 2 lines over I am paying about $50 more per month for the two, it is well worth it. I have had only one dropped call in the last month, I have NEVER been without DATA when I tried to use it. That alone is worth the extra $50 per month for me! Its one of those "you get what you pay for" things with sprint. If unlimited/limited speed and connectivity DATA is OK with you then sprint has what you need. I was real nervous about leaving, a 10+ year customer and all. But when I called them and used their change of contract to null/void the contract I had with them, account services asked me if I wanted to leave over the $3 the change was costing me. I told him YES, and that was it, no offers of credit or nothing. I was shocked! I read where others were given upgrades, $100 credits per line, I didnt get ****, LOL. Not that I would have taken it, but its the thought that counts, after 10+ years they didnt give a ****! Make the move if you haven't already, you wont be sorry! Oh and the Double DATA deal is back now, even more the reason to hope aboard

Damn, this sounds like my exact story! I just switched from Sprint and the E4GT to Verizon and the GN a day ago. I have been with Sprint for about 15 years and the yearly upgrade was continuing to keep me with them. I added a new line last year and was told and had my account noted I would receive 1 more yearly upgrade on that new line in 2012 after the line has been active for 3 months. Well it never showed up that I will be eligible in Sept 2012 so I called to discuss.
After 2 hours on a phone w/ a supervisor who actually saw the note on my account and read it back to me that it said they told I would get 1 more yearly upgrade on my line in 2012. His answer is they gave me the wrong information and he cannot honor it. His response was he would normally let someone out ETF free for this but I can get out free anyway this month so really there is nothing he can do.
So in order to get an upgrade on my line, I simply canceled the line then added a new line with my E4GT I was already using and then had a discount I could use on the line whenever I wanted. So sure, Sprint did me wrong but in the end I still got a discount available on a line...I really wanted to go to Verizon but the capped data plan was killing me, that was until they ran the double data promo! I said peace out Sprint and ported my number within 14 days to Verizon...
First impression of the phone was the screen felt small compared to the E4GT. The bottom buttons didn't make sense because they took up screen real estate. I ran my E4GT in a 160 screen density so the resolution wasn't a big change for me. Anyway I need to run...Bottom line first day didn't like the phone as much but really started liking it as the day went on. When I have more time later I will add some more comparisons for you.
As far as speed, take away what the papers say the GN is fast and I do not experience any lag what so ever. From my quick experience I would not know it was less powered then the E4GT.
Eman - I am debating going for the 10gb for $50. I know its more than sprint but whats the point of unlimited data if it doesnt work?
I left sprint for the same reason. I came from the nexus s. But I was able to get out of contract with sprint with no ETF. And I couldn't be more happier now. Verizon has super fast data. You wonr be disappointed.

I am in an area with 4G service where it does not appear LTE is coming along anytime in the near future. I would like to upgrade my phone (SGIII or EvoLTE) but would like to hold onto my old phone with WiMax as I'll still be paying the $10 a month.
Has anyone ported a number but kept their old phone to see if WiMax continues to work? Could this be done, or Sprint deactivate the WiMax keys as soon as you activate a new phone on the line?
I don't think it would work since you have to have an account with clearwire to use their WiMAX. I would assume that it wouldn't work. And sprint claims that the $10 charge isn't for 4g. I don't think it is either

I believe you could keep it active, but they'll make you place it on another line > costing you more money. The thing would be to get your upgrade > transfer number to new phone > keep evo as a backup. Sprint said they would support wimax up to 2014/2015 I believe.
Bummer, well thanks for the input. I'll definitely be holding onto it anyway.
Ya. I would never sell my evo even though I have Verizon now. I gave it to gf and I had a hard time doing that lol. I still miss it after 5 months
