Upgrade phone but keep Evo for WiMax? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am in an area with 4G service where it does not appear LTE is coming along anytime in the near future. I would like to upgrade my phone (SGIII or EvoLTE) but would like to hold onto my old phone with WiMax as I'll still be paying the $10 a month.
Has anyone ported a number but kept their old phone to see if WiMax continues to work? Could this be done, or Sprint deactivate the WiMax keys as soon as you activate a new phone on the line?

I don't think it would work since you have to have an account with clearwire to use their WiMAX. I would assume that it wouldn't work. And sprint claims that the $10 charge isn't for 4g. I don't think it is either

No that won't work, the phone will not be activated.

I believe you could keep it active, but they'll make you place it on another line > costing you more money. The thing would be to get your upgrade > transfer number to new phone > keep evo as a backup. Sprint said they would support wimax up to 2014/2015 I believe.

Bummer, well thanks for the input. I'll definitely be holding onto it anyway.

Ya. I would never sell my evo even though I have Verizon now. I gave it to gf and I had a hard time doing that lol. I still miss it after 5 months

Transferring Upgrades???

Im not due for an upgrade on my line until May. I want the Epic 4G Touch now though, im tired of my EVO 4G. My mom has a full upgrade on her line that she will let me use to get a phone. Will we be able to purchase a Epic with the discounts and contract extension on her line, and simply change the numbers? Thanks.
Yes you can do that. Get the upgrade they will get her all set up. Then call and get the phones numbers switched.
Don't let her use it though she might keep it. Ha

They call it a flip-flop =)

I do it all the time. We have 5 lines and I'm always flip flopping.
Some places call it a buddy upgrade
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S2
I activated new line on my account, used it to buy the ET4G for the contract price, then swapped it with my EVO, and gave the 2nd line to my Mom. So yes you can definitely do that.
Well thats the thing, we're on 2 different lines, on 2 different ACCOUNTS. But would the discounts hold up? I Guess not, NOOOOO!!!!!!! lol
If you are on 2 different lines, you can still use the upgrade on the correct account. then after that just flip flop the phones over

After dropping phone, screen won't turn on (or, should I get NS4g or Epic 4g touch?)

I dropped my phone and the battery came out. I've dropped it before, but this time the screen doesn't turn on. The keyboard lights work when I slide it out, and occasionally the phone will make the sound when I plug it in to charge.
I plan on taking it to the repair store and see what is exactly wrong and if it's worth the cost to fix.
If not Im considering the ns4g or e4gt. If I get the e4gt, then I can wait until at
Least the 2nd generation lte phone and lte coverage to come to my area. If I get the ns4g, it's less than half the going rate of the e4gt, and presumably will get android updates faster. Downside is that memory is not expandable, and I used a 32gb card in my epic 4g.

Thanks.
I've actually reconsidered staying on contract. While the phone price is nice, part of me wants to just pay the extra money for a used phone. I don't even know when LTE is going to be released in my area anyways, and 4G hasn't been a necessity really.
Although I really like the new phones that come out.

Help... I got drop by sprint

I got drop by sprint and have until Friday to switch carriers. I am in San Antonio Texas and night try boost or cricket, not sure whats best and if the phone losses mms or any otger features with either carrier. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Might sale this phone and get the gs3 all together but I cant do that with sprint... Dammit...
My blue kuban ET4G is awesome!!!!!!!!!
No way you just found out today that you have till friday to switch carriers
I thought they gave like a month or 2 advanced notice so what you been doing this whole time?
And to actually be helpful I have heard that boost does not lose MMS
why did you get dropped? also, did you have more than 1 line with sprint? did they drop the whole account or just 1 line?
I moved June 9th, and never switch my address with sprint.. Thats totally my fault... So I got drop this morning, called sprint and beg them to let me keep my service to keep my number. So they Gave me my service back until Friday... Does anyone have a link for boost? How to flash? or even cricket...
My blue kuban ET4G is awesome!!!!!!!!!
really? they can drop you for that?
hmmmmm something smells fishy herrrrrrrrrre.... but my friend you still have to go and get your phone flashed to boost or cricket and that will cost you some money. Its not go to a web page and flash a zip and you have Boost just in case you did not know.
Hope you get it all straight but if I were you I would look into a GSM based phone which is easier to switch carriers and worth more on the re-sale tip...
Straight Talk - $45 a month if you find yourself a AT&T Skyrocket
Edit: Do it yourself kit for Boost http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419488
Ive flashed Evo's to cricket before, im familiar with flashing. But never to boost.

I was using the 00002 prl.. I wanted to get drop. But not without notice but is my fault I didnt get the notice since I never gave my new address

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh now thats more like it, thats what I thought it just did not work out the way you hoped... Hey check out the tutorial or just flash to Cricket and enjoy. Boost I know you needed a donor phone in the past
If you use the search feature you will find several threads related to using your phone on Boost. Try both the general and q&a forums.
How long did it take you to get dropped with the 000002 PRL? I've been on PRL 00015 for a while now, roaming on Verizon and I've not gotten dropped.
I want to switch to AT&T... I've been with Sprint for over 10 years, it's time to move on. Mobile data almost NEVER works for me. Unless I can grab some wifi, my phones worthless if I'm out and about for anything other then phone calls.
Did you get hit any fees btw? Is your ESN clean? I'd love to be able to re-sell my phone!
I found on craigslist a place that flashes for free if you get the new cricket activation with them. I guess I'll leave the flashing to the experts. Boost needs a donor so I don't have time to deal with that. Today is my day of, I work 7am to 8pm tomorrow and Friday. I need this done today. Hopefully I'll be able to keep my blue kuban ROM.

What I like about the PRL 00015 is that you can use ROAM Control to toggle between Sprint an Verizon, BUT I've noticed that Exchange does not work when your on Verizon. I was hoping it might on 00002.
I don't make many calls and I must not be downloading enough on 3G! I was going to try to torrents, but never got around to it.
About how many gigs of roaming did you use each of those two months?
I would sell my E4GT, buy a Skyrocket off here or Craigslist (been seeing them sell for as low as 200 now), & get a AT&T compatible SIM from off Straight Talk website, & since you're in San Antonio (go Spurs BTW!) & right in AT&T backyard you should get excellent coverage. I'm actually thinking about going this route myself too, I'm sick of Sprint's network & abysmal 3G speeds.

Ting, saved $95

I switched to Ting last month, used BYOD to keep my Epic 4g Touch. I had two lines on Sprint and my bill averaged $130.00 per month. I was getting a 25% corporate discount which I am no longer eligible for so my bill was going to be even higher had I stayed with Sprint. My first month bill for Ting with two lines was $36.
Ting may not be for everyone, but, if your like me and have most of your data usage on wifi and limit your minutes, you may be able to benefit by switching. Dealing with Ting has been very straightforward. They also have very good management tools on their website and they listen to customer feedback. Ting uses Sprint's network, so service has been the same as on Sprint. Ting allows voice roaming but not data roaming.
Check out their website, it can help you determine if switching may be cheaper for you.
If you use my referral link you can get a discount on your first device or service credit, I'll get a discount too.

i'll back up your statement, i'm saving about the same amount from switching (was on verizon)
bought two lightly used e4gt's and we are loving it, biggest thing is no data roaming, but you roam for voice, and so far the data was only an issue when we were at a park (out in the boonies' here...
we aren't data hogs or talk a ton on our cell phones...mainly wanted the smart phone for the better camera (vs a dumb feature phone) and a few apps...so we are no power users...
though i love this community and the JB leaks, and ting is very awesome

but using mobile networks, not so much of a power user, i've had people tell me they can't go to ting because they use 4gb of mobile data and 2000 minutes and even more text...i'm just not like that, i can get by with less than 500 minutes for 2 phones and less than 100mb of data most time, because of wifi and an awesome wife
Have been with Ting since last year. Great savings. I don't quite understand what you meant by no data roaming, though. I have taken my e4gt traveling and have had no problem getting mobile data. Am I missing something?

Hey fellas I was thinking about moving on over to TING, I was just wondering did you guys port your number to ting? Or did you get a new number?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
I had to get a new number but porting shouldn't be too big of a deal in most instances. The only time when it can be a pain is if you're currently a sprint customer, want to keep your number and your current phone. If you're going to do that take a close look at the ting forums and if will let you know what you need to do.
I really loving ting so far, I've saved 50 a month so far and just got a cheap epic touch off of eBay. Ting combined with an awesome phone like this one is unbeatable. My real test is going to be heading down to New Mexico to test how it performs in an area with limited sprint coverage. As long as I can still make a call and text ill be happy.

not an issue for me, i love the savings and the phone always works as a phone, thats what i want...ting has so far been awesome!

I ported my Sprint number to Ting, but the process was kind of long because I did not have an old Sprint phone.
To start service on Ting, your current phone cannot be activated on a different account. I wanted to bring my Epic 4G Touch over, so I had to port it to google voice ($20 fee) which took 24 hours. That process cancelled my Sprint service. Then, I ported from google voice, back to my phone to start my Ting service. This took about 5 days... The process is longer coming from google voice.
If you have an old sprint phone, you can transfer your number to the old phone, then bring it back to your current phone. That should take 2 days, not 1 week.
You can keep your old number on google voice, then forward google voice calls to a new number acquired from Ting. I did not like the added layer of working with google voice, though. In the end, the wait was worth it. I went from paying $88 a month to Sprint, to $32 a month at Ting.
Shameless referral link: https://zooqns67q1.ting.com/
FYI, i bought my phones off ebay, it took less than 48 hours for porting the number and getting the phone activated on ting and one phone call because i was curious about something. very smooth and swift as far as i'm concerned.
Thanks for the response guys.
When you say a old sprint phone can it be any old sprint phone? Like a windows mobile?
If not and say I bought a old sprint off ebay would I be able to port 4 phones with that one phone(one at a time at different times) ?

On the ting site they have a comprehensive list of of 'whitelisted' bring your own device phones. Any of the wimax HTC phones (evo, evo 3D, & shift) samsung epic or epic touch, nexus S and a handful of others. I brought over a transform ultra which wasn't on the official list but it still worked like a charm. The only real restrictions on BYOD are no LTE, iPhone or push to talk devices.
I suppose you could bring an old 6.5 windows phone, but getting data to work will probably be a chore. I've had to work with them in the past on Verizon MVNOs, and I'd say you'd be better off getting a cheap android phone.
When it comes to porting over multiple numbers, you'll need a device for each number to keep them active. You don't have to port over all the numbers at one time, just remember DO NOT cancel or put a line on hold before porting. The port will do that for you.

Did you guys have to do anything on your E4GT when going with ting? I think VM folks had to flash their phone to be compatible with virgin. I'm paying $150 for my wife and I. That's with a discount too. My contract is up this June, so I'm seriously debating of going with ting. Their calculator showed that I'd save $100 on average every month with our usage. No data roaming isn't much of an issue for us and we don't go out of the country much. As long as I can get voice/text when roaming, i'll be happy.
Just moved to Ting from AT&T - my wife now gets a smartphone too and we're paying about half what we were! Picked up a couple used SGSII Epic 4G Touches on eBay and we're good to go. Coverage is OK where we live/work/play. Don't care about roaming data, don't use a ton of data anyway. Highly recommended!

+1, We're in the same boat bud I too would like to know if there's extra steps. I assume you just flash back to a stock ROM, and then update provisioning and such from the stock ROM to convert from Sprint or Boost or CREDO to Ting. Then reflash back to what you like again. Or use temp boot EL29 from sdcard to update PRL/Profile, and launcher activity shortcuts to set APN & WiMax settings.
I'm gonna be paying $40-60 a month for our 2 lines with using Google Voice and Sparephone for 90% of calls over data or wifi
With whitelisted BYOD phones you don't need to flash them. It took almost exactly 24 hours for my e4gt to be ready once I registered it with ting. Switching my current number over to the e4gt only took a short call.

So, you're saying that I can stay on Paranoid Android/CM10.1/JB 4.12, and if it's a Sprint ET4G (on the list) , it's still fine for easy transfer to Ting? Or are you having an easy time because you're running a stock ROM?

Theoretically, could one perhaps still roam on other CDMA towers using the Roam Control app or another similar app? Is this an acceptable and/or detectable behavior I wonder?

for people wondering about flashing to ting. nope, i'm running the stock sprint rom (well leaked JB rom) but nothing else had to be done...as far as rom...
what ting has you do is you have to wait for their wizards to push an update PRL to your phone, you update it, update the profile, reboot...then access the hidden menu and update two fields so that you can send and recieve MMS and also enable 4g wiimax for the phone, past that you are good to go...also after doing a full flash recovery to gb08 didn't have to do a thing, everything is working still and checked the menu and the changes stayed, very awesome!

Inches away from dumping Verizon

VZW is about to loose a 10 year customer.
I hate what VZW has done to this phone. That paired with the upgrade shuffle needed to keep my unlimited data and I am about to jump to Sprint. I can get two HTC Ones, and a new Torque for my son for $99 total. Unlimited data and everything. Plus the added feature of be able to unlock and root.
Why should I stay.
There is no reason to stay if you don't want to. If sprint has good enough service for you and is cheaper, go for it.
Good luck with sprint. **** service
Sent from my HTC One VZW using Tapatalk 4
it' s a tough choice, Verizon gives best service and they know it and take advantage, the ones who know they aren't up to par let things slide like unlocking to gain customers. and it works, I also have been with Verizon sine before it was even called Verizon (so my dad says) and I don't think I could get him to ever switch (he doesn't care about root, just service) so my future is in the hands of the great devs and or dev edition phones, yayyy. Verizon has gone down hill fast since crApple came. everything that was decent changed, recently 24 mount contracts now, no longer 20 month, 14 day return rather than 30. Guess we will see how things play out at least with this phone we are able to send it out for S-OFF. and it came fast, very cool.
I hopefully sending mine out next week.

What have they done to the phone?
There's no reason to stay. Just like mentioned before - if you have no need for Verizon's service coverage vs. Sprint's, then why stay with them? If you get solid Sprint coverage everywhere you need it, then switch. Otherwise, the only reason to stay is for the coverage. That's generally the only reason to go with carrier X over carrier Y.

I just left Sprint after 13 years and picked this phone up on Verizon. Let me tell you the grass is not greener on the other side, Unlimited data is meaningless when you can't even play a youtube video for your kid in the car even though you're in the middle of a major metropolitan area (Seattle). If you want dial up speeds then by all means go for it.
Just switched from sprint also after being with them for 14 years. The data speeds were so slow they were unusable. It got to the point where I couldn't even get make a phone call without dropping the call. I drove from Ohio to Florida and only picked up LTE maybe 3 times for about 5 minutes. Other people in the car had Verizon and had LTE 90 percent of the time. Need less to say it was a damn long trip on horrible 3g and 1x
Sent from my HTC One
Sprints data speeds are horrible. Had them for years. Dropped calls a lot too.
I'm not really happy with Verizon either but at least I'm never without service. I'd rather be unhappy WITH service than unhappy WITHOUT service.
Have fun. Peace out.

Same here. I was with Sprint 9 years. The dropped calls, terrible data just got to be too much. They recently turned the 4G LTE on in my area and it was spotty at best. I just can't get over how much better Verizon's network is.
My work phone is T-Moble. I had VZ for my personal cells and switched to AT&T about 4 years ago. I could not wait to go back to VZ. T-Moble is just brutal in my vacation home. It actually switches to AT&T service. AT&T was slow and would drop a ton of calls. VZ may be a PITA but they have the best signal/speed where I live. I'm afraid I will be with VZ a long time.
Lol. Got a buddy on Sprint, he tethers into my phone for data all the time. You really can't beat Verizon coverage and data speed.

I've been somewhat considering this too. After asking around, seems AT&T is considered next best in service.

Eh not anywhere I've been. ATT is barely better than Sprint where I've been. T-mobile is pretty much second in areas I've been which is alot.

I was with Sprint for 10 years and I'm glad I left them. Sure you can still get unlimited data with them but their service is terrible. Sprint LTE is going to take a while to reach Verizon's coverage and the 3G speeds are a joke. Verizon may torture us with their stance against modding, but most of us just deal with it because their service is the best...case in point, the recent JD Power rankings. Being able to unlock and root doesn't mean anything if you don't have the network support to back it up.

it' s a tough choice, Verizon gives best service and they know it and take advantage, the ones who know they aren't up to par let things slide like unlocking to gain customers. and it works, I also have been with Verizon sine before it was even called Verizon (so my dad says) and I don't think I could get him to ever switch (he doesn't care about root, just service) so my future is in the hands of the great devs and or dev edition phones, yayyy.

I sell Verizon phones at a premium retailer and must say apple is the cause of all my problems and have seen that as soon as apple came along all the plans changed they got rid of unlimited apple is the root of all evil

Let the OP go to Sprint - he'll be back fast enough. The reason vzw did what they did was because they didn't want to swap out a bunch of phones and do all that paperwork.
In the future don't jump on the phone the first day or week it's out, wait a while to see if that's what you want.

good luck. Had sprint, then t-mobile before verizon.
Sprint was bad, 200kbits/sec speeds when having 3g signal. Their LTE runs on 2500mhz which means you'll drop that as soon as you walk inside.
T-mobile had much faster data speeds, but coverage was horrendous and a lot of dropped calls.
You get what you pay for. Unless you live on wifi, you'll be crying about sprint soon enough.
I've heard terrible things about Sprint, but I've never had their service. I had T-mobile YEARS ago and it was awful, I'm sure things have changed since then.
Verizon isn't cheap, it's a headache to go through the loophole to keep your unlimited data, but if you're going to switch to Sprint, do your research, and make sure you're going to be okay with slower data speeds and spotty coverage.
I don't like waiting extra time for phones on Verizon, nor do I enjoy the bloat that they fill their phones with, but that's the reality of it and the cost of keeping my unlimited data with a company that has a fast/reliable network.
Thankfully, we have awesome developers who work their magic and donate their work to the community.

Two years ago, I switched to Sprint. Got home and realized I couldn't even make phone calls inside my house. Next day, returned the sprint phones and went back to VZW. I have never looked at another carrier since.
I will say that when I went back to VZW, they gave me two new upgrades on my phones.... that was a plus to my mess.
