I am curious how is everyone managing their contacts?
Are you using Outlook?
Are you using Dashwire?
Are you using SIM Manager?
Are you using Photo Contacts Pro?
I am curious as I would love to import say friends info via facebook or any type of friendly software that can grab pics and any other info I have already obtained?
Any advice feedback or preference just comment and tell what's worked for you?
im too lazy too...i got some in dashwire, some in outlook...some written on my hand.
I just settle with outlook, I use it for all my calendar stuff too for both work and play and it does the job. Tried Dashwire but just wasn't feeling it...took longer to sync than hooking up to my computer. I use Google Cal Sync and Ogg sync to keep all in line OTA on the calendar front.
I'm still searching for a program that can sync my outlook cal/contacts with my dash OTA all in one.
I quit using outlook a year or so ago. Right now I am just using Hotmail / Live. With the Dash you can sync Hotmail and phone. So no need to use Outlook. All contacts are online.

Yes Outlook seems the best option. I also like Dashwire too, it is an amazing little program/webpage whatever you want to call it...

Im have trouble with my Picture Caller Id Screen. and Im using WM 6.1 and it comes up distorted... What would I be doing to change that?
dashwire ?
after reading their website that does sound pretty cool , but a question for anyone that is using it just to make sure before i sign up for their service .
it says you control what gets synced , and when .
just how much control does the user have over the process : can it be set to only update using wifi when i tell it to ? (since my service provider has no unlimited data plan available )
i use the free service by Nuevasync (www.nuevasync.com)
It is a two-way OTA sync with Google calendar and Google contacts using OTA Activesync.
Works flawlessly for me with 500+ contacts. I think it only works with one Google calendar right now and there are some restrictions with repeating appointments etc.
(Google contacts sucks but at least I am free of Outlook...)
I use outlook. I have around 2000 or so contacts (business) and I have had only some minor issues.
me too, using outlook, some duplicate contacts (1000 work contacts) but for the rest all ok
Hi,
I currently use PIM backup to back my entire contacts and messages (Which amount to more than 3000 + )
Once windows 7 comes would PIM backup be available for it (As there are rumours that you can only install stuff from the windows market place for win 7)
If any of the members have some inside news it would be really appreciated..
(Like if MS is planning some way to transfer data from old phone) I am not talking about windows my phone though
Thanks a lot
Basically you have to get your contacts into Windows Live or some other email provider (exchange, GMail, etc) that will allow you to sync down your contacts. 3rd party apps won't be able to do it and at least as of now Zune doesn't have that capability. But I'm curious how they'll do it for the carriers. Maybe they will have some app that does it? It's a rather common exercise for the drones that work at the carriers stores to backup/transfer contacts for people. If I'm coming from my dumbphone and picking up a WP7 phone, I want to leave that store with my phone chock full of contacts.

I thought the in store contact transfer was normally done via the SIM card, and is mildly limited.

You have to sync it to a hosted service. There is no direct outlook sync.

Not all phones have SIM cards. Maybe this is a reason WP7 is GSM only right now?

No way to directly use your PIM backup on WP7. What you can try is sync your WM 6.5 device with your windows live account using Activesync, that should put your contacts and calendar in Windows Live though I'm not 100% sure which way the sync will go but since you have a backup you should be good. Or just use Outlook if you have it, install the hotmail connector and copy your data across. Helps if you change the view to List view so you can easily select all your data. Another way for Calendar items is to export them to ical format then import them into windows live. No way to transfer SMS messages though. HTH.
Does anyone know yet how well Google Calendar, Gmail, and contacts sync up with WP7 yet? I've been trying to move operations over to Windows Live, but for simplicity, I think I'd much rather stay with Google.
google's mobile sync (activesync) is total pos..
i am so glad i made the switch from gmail to hotmail..

Yeah, it's not the best service, but I usually have no problem with it on my iPhone 4 (except sometimes it's ungodly slow and will miss an event or two).
I actually much prefer hotmail to gmail recently, just not willing to change my addresses >_>
GMail supports Exchange... which happens to work perfectly, so I don't know why anyone would want Hotmail...

There's no need to change your address. Just forward your mail from gmail to hotmail and set up hotmail to present your messages as sent from gmail, there's an option for that.

Because hotmail works better. Especially for syncing contacts and calendar.

When you go to set up your email, GMail is one of the built-in options. Just enter your info and you'll be done. You only need the Live ID for Marketplace/Zune/Xbox Live.

Because some of us may prefer hotmail? Gmail isn't the end-all-be-all. Your not giving up anything by choosing one or the other.

NOTHING works better than Exchange. GMail has full Exchange support, so it's absolutely impossible that Hotmail works better - in the best case, it can work as good (for those Hotmail users who also have Exchange enabled already).

Google isn't using Exchange. They license technology but have their own implementation, which has its quirks sometimes (namely, some people have problems with certain contact fields from Outlook). Google Sync also tends to be down or work slowly more often than its Hotmail counterpart.
Apart from that, Hotmail has the benefit for me in that it is integrated with SkyDrive, and I use the Photo Email and folder sharing via email quite often. I also prefer to use the Windows Live Mail client to web interfaces.
Anyway, I'm not preaching that you convert to Hotmail, but simply saying that there are reasons to use something different from Gmail.
I personally think Microsoft's web services have leapfrogged Google's convincingly, and Google will never work as well on their OS - they will make sure of that. I especially like the OneNote - OneNote Mobile - OneNote Web App synching.

Hi I have a silly question: how do I backup the contacts from my phone onto my pc or internet?
I have acquired a lot of contacts post-getting the phone, and I want to backup my contacts before experimenting with it.
So, how do I backup all the phone numbers on my simcard, pc, or just the internet so i can retrieve it later?
I don't use outlook and stuff, but I don't mind using as long as someone cares to explain how.
thanks in advance
Hopefully there is some type of app or way through Zune. Don't have my phone yet but will let you know once I receive it.
Contacts should automatically be synced with Windows Live. Go to your windows live account on your pc and look at the contacts there to verify.

From windows live i can't see any phone numbers of people on my phone :/
How did you add the contacts, just import from SIM?
In my case it was done by Hotmail sync.
Yes. I imported from sim. how do i back up to sim now?
Or how do i do hotmail sync to backup?
when i got the phone i did this:
import from sim
add live account
add gmail account
add facebook
link everything as much as i could
but now i have more ppl's numbers, mostly just numbers no other linked accounts. how do i back these up to my simcard/phone/hotmail/whatever ?
cheers
Is your Windows Live (or some other account, like Google) setup to sync contacts?
I can't really say for sure, my process was a bit different than yours. I was waiting for the release date so I had everything already setup in Windows Live
Ahhh. I see. Nothing is synced to my windows live.
But even then, all i want to backup is phonebook/phone contacts to my sim. I don't care about anything else. Is it really that hard? Microsoft really thought it would be impossible anyone would ever have any reason to want to transfer their contacts from a one to another phone? wtf

The cloud really has been perfect for handling contacts for me. For example, my phone was stolen a month or so ago, if the contacts were just on the sim they'd all be gone now. I had the phone replaced under insurance, added my Windows Live id, and all of my contacts were back within minutes.
I can't really think of a reason not to sync contacts to either Google or Windows Live nowadays. Let them handle your backup

Hrm, not sure what else you'd need to do. You can try long pressing on Windows Live to force sync.
When you add a new contact on your phone, it should have automatically been added to Windows Live (mine gives me a selection between Windows Live and Google).

No problem, glad that worked out Managing contacts on the web is real nice, there are some nice combine/clean up features for linking different accounts.

you can also merge contacts from windows live as you may find duplicates. it may take a bit but i suggest merging your contacts if they're duplicated. these changes will be visible on the phone as well.

Hello,
I am decided to go no google with my mate xs. I do have to get my contacts from google contacts to sync or transfered over. Is there a method of doing this currently?
Yes. Phone Clone.
Isn't phone clone a one off?
Is it not possible to synchronise the contacts via Microsoft Outlook and Gmail's Exchange features?
In addition ti ohobe clone, You can import your content also via Bluetooth, WLAN Direct or vcard from internal storage
Better way is to just install Outlook from Microsoft and sync your gmail, this allows you to sync your contacts =)

Both these options cannot transfer contacts which are in groups : After you import them, it loses all the groups and gets saved as regular contacts. Also, Huawei doesn't import the notes in each contact.
This seems to be one major drawback at this time for me.
