Does anyone know yet how well Google Calendar, Gmail, and contacts sync up with WP7 yet? I've been trying to move operations over to Windows Live, but for simplicity, I think I'd much rather stay with Google.
google's mobile sync (activesync) is total pos..

Yeah, it's not the best service, but I usually have no problem with it on my iPhone 4 (except sometimes it's ungodly slow and will miss an event or two).
I actually much prefer hotmail to gmail recently, just not willing to change my addresses >_>
GMail supports Exchange... which happens to work perfectly, so I don't know why anyone would want Hotmail...

There's no need to change your address. Just forward your mail from gmail to hotmail and set up hotmail to present your messages as sent from gmail, there's an option for that.

When you go to set up your email, GMail is one of the built-in options. Just enter your info and you'll be done. You only need the Live ID for Marketplace/Zune/Xbox Live.

NOTHING works better than Exchange. GMail has full Exchange support, so it's absolutely impossible that Hotmail works better - in the best case, it can work as good (for those Hotmail users who also have Exchange enabled already).

Google isn't using Exchange. They license technology but have their own implementation, which has its quirks sometimes (namely, some people have problems with certain contact fields from Outlook). Google Sync also tends to be down or work slowly more often than its Hotmail counterpart.
Apart from that, Hotmail has the benefit for me in that it is integrated with SkyDrive, and I use the Photo Email and folder sharing via email quite often. I also prefer to use the Windows Live Mail client to web interfaces.
Anyway, I'm not preaching that you convert to Hotmail, but simply saying that there are reasons to use something different from Gmail.
I personally think Microsoft's web services have leapfrogged Google's convincingly, and Google will never work as well on their OS - they will make sure of that. I especially like the OneNote - OneNote Mobile - OneNote Web App synching.

Hello all
I'm wondering if there is any way to be able to view the contents of yahoo email folders in outlook. as far as i can tell the only thing i can see is my general inbox.
So far the only solution i have found is to use yahoo Go! but this does not display the conents of my email on my home screen. in addition i have to load the program ever time i want to check my work folder, as well as manually connect. its very cumbersome and the software is bloated with graphics and crap i just dont want to see or use.
In reality, the only thing i want to see is the contents of my folder labeled "work" the rest of my email i will gladly deal with when i am at a computer. idealy, i would like outlook, or a whatever program it is to display the contents of just my "work" folder on my homescreen. if anyone can point me in the right direction here it would be greatly appreciated.
oh also ive heard that google is much better for mobile email. my yahoo account is 15 years old, so i cant give it up, but im considering trying to rig things up so that all of my work email forwards to a gmail account so that i cant then get it displayed on my homescreen.
thanks again guys
ok, this may or may not help. are you using pop3 to connect to yahoo? if so, i think that's your problem. try connection with imap. you should be able to find the connection info on the yahoo site. you may have to do some funny business to make it not automaticly pick up the pop3 settings. i had to for my gmail account. they may actually have a winmobile 6+ tutorial (gmail did). but i know that imap supports folders.
Hey ,
Yahoo gives u pop and imap only if u have a paid account ,, not to free accounts
wow, how restricting. i'm glad i dropped them 5yrs ago for gmail.
thanks for the help. yahoo are real bastards. still trying to ride along on a restrictive model that was good enough back in 1995, but is a joke with the likes of competitors like gmail in this day and age. i too wish i could just dump the damn yahoo account, but ive had this email address for about 15 years, and i also use the thing for work, so it really wont cut it. can anyone tell me if some sort of forwarding to gmail of just my work contacts' email could resolve my problem? if so, is there any special trick i need to be doing?

Sorry, but forwarding is like POP/IMAP in Yahoo. Only available on the paid "Yahoo Mail Plus" accounts. I've switched 95% over to gmail, but check the Yahoo free account once a week.

Well, gmail or Yahoo, or whatever other, there is no way to keep the email folders and related messages in the Android phone memory and use them offline like in the PC Outlook! That's really missing as one can't consult messages if out of wireless connection range!!!
That's the application Android is missing!
Hi all.
My question is: which protocol is being used by the GMail application?
Is it POP3S, IMAP4S or HTTPS?
TIA.
Wow, seriously dude enter "gmail protocol" in google and the 1st result shows you.
Standard is pop3. You can also use IMAP, which I'd recommend, since that way all the changes you make on your device in your inbox will also show up when going to gmail.com see it as synching,
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=75725
You've opened two threads(about a ROM that already has a dedicated thread) which don't belong on the DEV section.

I dont think you are understanding what he is asking, he wants to know what protocol the gmail application is using, not what the gmail servers are capable of, I originally assumed it used HTTPS as it looks a little web based but it is using imap, not sure if on a custom port though.
and this isnt a dev section question

Agree on all points.
The Gmail *app* definitely does not use active sync, although the actual Gmail *service* does support push email via active sync now so that Exchange based clients can use it.
Regards,
Dave
If I am not mistaken active sync is just the way that a windows mobile device links to m.google.com and has exchange server like sync doesnt it? so active sync is the way to add an exchange server that actually deals with the mail?

Well I think it's web based (http or https) because I don't have IMAP and POP in my contract (damn orange ), but I never had any fee since I use the gmail app. This is why, by the way, orange france (dunno about other countries) removes google apps from his rom, like gmail, google chat and more... because they avoid them from making money.
Well, what do you use?
I use HTC Mail simple because of the home screen widget(hey, its a reason at least) even for my Gmail account(Note, my only account). I have set it as an Exchange mail "As mail arrives(Push)". Hopefully it'll be light at my battery(Theoretically it should, since it won't be repeatedly checking for mails).
What about you?
Somehow I always get 2 notifications (one gmail and one from the htc widget) eventhough I only want the htc one
I use HTC Mail because I think it's much better... especially since I have my hotmail & yahoo mail accounts configured in HTC mail... Another thing I like with HTC mail is that I can go back and read mails offline when I'm not connected to wifi since I don't have an unlimited data plan atm.
Some other things that makes HTC mail better is pinch to zoom, choose between regular or threaded email and much better handling copy / paste / stuff, even though it's implemented in gmail now it's nowhere as good as in HTC mail where selecting text works like a dream.
I use HTC Mail. I like the fact that I can read emails offline. Gmail used to have issues with opening attachments when it was on Eclair but the latest OTA seems to have addressed this issue.
Gmail app for me lol couldn't get on with HTCs mail app
really depends if you prefer pushmail or imap with scheduled retrieve...
I use gmail app as i use gmail as email provider. (but google really does need to stop ****ing around with attachment access, it's kinda ridiculous...)
i use k-9 to have push mail for all accounts.

Htc mail app. There is widget and push that is all in need.... Somehow attachments are fine for me now could this be latest update?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yahoo mail for android, only for yahoo obviously but messages are pushed instantly & when i delete mail its actually deleted, i found with htc mail it would only delete it from my phone, when i signed in online mail was still there.
Sent from my HTC Desire runing Android 2.2 via the XDA App
I had problems with HTC mail, and it used to send 2 mails everytime I send one.
So switched to Gmail app and Yahoo mail for Android app as they both push the mails. Also any deleted mails will be synchronised and removed from the actual accounts.
---------------------------------------------
HTC Desire still on 2.1
I have disabled Gmail because HTC mail can integrate any mail accounts I use. These include, but aren't limited to Gmail, Exchange and my service provider's primary mail account.
I used to have the Gmail App active as well, but I got really annoyed by the notifications that would pop up two times for my Gmail account. Last but not least I simply like HTC's interface choices, they fit much better into the big picture.

Doesn't both got push mail? The HTC Mail does and when I used Gmail it behaved as if it had push mail(Which I believe it does).
Ive been using Both together. Gmail for my personal account and HTC Mail to manage my Exchange Server account for work. Both push and I only get individual notifications, each with their own icon. It works perfectly so I am a bit confused as to what may be causing others issues.
Gmail app for Gmail and HTC Mail for the MS Exchange server. I like the labels support in the Google app but the HTC app is much prettier and more fun to use.
The Gmail interface is very efficient for dealing with lots of email. Faster than the webpage on a desktop, dare I say

If you are using exchange or gmail is ok, in any other case push email is not possible on gnex using the standard email client.
Your title is a bit misleading. Ice Cream Sandwich does support PUSH for exchange and hotmail in addition to gmail. IMAP Idle is not supported.
"GNEX doesn't supprt IMAP Idle. We need your voice."
I have Automatic (Push) on the standard email app for Hotmail and Gmail

android as a OS does support PUSH notification, its all down to the software eg, gmail, k9, touchdown to utilize it.
if that software has no support for PUSH, its not android's fault.

If you work for a company with some email services, you obviously don't want to leave gmail to manage your emails.
In this case the gmail fetcher feature uses POP and not IMAP so it can't be considered push email. Study more before complaining about me please

What is your definition of push? Corporate works. Gmail works. Yahoo works. IMAP works. I'm not sure what other kind of "push" technology you're referring to. Other than that, POP3 is just POP3. Google can't help what technologies other email providers offer.
I think there's a huge disconnect between you and the rest of us right now, so could you elaborate?

This. If it's a POP3 email box/service you can't "use" Push with it. There's nothing to push.

The huge disconnect is because most people here don't know what push email/IMAP idle is.
Push email means that your client/server connection remains in idle, no need to connect every X minutes to check for a new email since the connection is never lost.
With PUSH email (called IMAP Idle for most email provider) you is notified on new email in real time, this saves battery also because the connection remains in idle and there is no need to create a new handshake every time.
PUSH email isn't possible with POP account but this days every email provider supports both POP and IMAP.
With ICS and previous android there is no way to do IMAP idle with a standard email since this feature is supported in gmail client only.
Do you realize that you don't need to use the factory email program to check email? There are plenty of free options in the Market (as well as SMS, dialers, etc) to replace any app you do not like.

can you give me an example of a great app that supports push email and that have a good HTML support please?
What a great device, but I really miss the Microsoft Exchange Activesync account type.
I tried to setup via the new Google Exchance account type, and I can see my exchange mail just fine i Gmail. But I dont care for reading my professional life emails in gmail, so it would have been great if OnePlus had included an email app.
Anyway, I can see my calendar items in Google Calender just fine, both my gmail and exchange calendar item. So far so good.
Contacts however is a different matter. Gmail and Exhance contacts are cluttered all together in the dial (contracts), is there a way to exclude my gmail contacts so I only see Exchange contacts?. I can't seem to find any way to do that on the oneplus 3.
Also, not all my exchange contacts are there, so although sync is greenlighted the sync is not complete. Anybody else experience and fix that?

Well, 3rd time I set up exchange it looks like I now have working email, calendar and all my contacts.
Now I just need to find a good stand alone email app for my exchange email and then disable notifications of such emails from the gmail app.
Hmm, .they sure didn't make it easy.
I started usibg to one plus 3 recently. Phone is very good but badly miss the smoofh integration of microsoft exchange and contacts in my old Samsung phone in active syn mode. . Wish one plus 3 brings its own email app like what we see in i phone or samsung.
I personally use an outlook and Gmail address. I use Nine for my email app and just forward my Gmail to my outlook address. Could always create a secondary outlook adress as well just to handle the Gmail address.
