Im coming from the original sgs 2 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

i sold my european galaxy s II , took 300 from it and just got this yesterday, because it was my only
option, i could have gone with att's version but no unlimited data.
I then realized you get throttled to edge, which in my area is just as good as no data at all.
So right now im not really sure if i should return it for the att..
I immediately noticed a choppy lagness... not in terms of performance because this phone is a beast. In comparison to the exynos, the hercules gets anhilated.
I immediately noticed just from switching screens on twiz.
The international just felt so much faster and responsive. New screens would appear and close in the blink of an eye.
I am still happy about this phone....
...but I was lagging playing dragon fly??????? What the hell is this..
I still like this phone and I have faith in it and will overclock her.....but whats up with this slowddown guys?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA Premium App

Just as you said, the Exynos is simply the better processor. The Hercules definitely has a certain choppiness at times that isn't present in the AT&T/Sprint/Int. version. Hopefully, overclocking or some additional updates will help out with this though. This is using the same cpu as the Touchpad and that easily overclocks to 1.8-1.9 Ghz. Still very fast as it is though.
Sent from my Galaxy S II using XDA Premium app

yeah still vey fast i completely agree
i understand they did this to achieve the data speeds but it just doesnt feel like a galaxy s II.
Atts screen is too small for my taste i like 4.37-4.5, I have huge hands.
this is basically a rant, but i do look forward to see where development takes us
still baffled about dragon fly.....its not really a demanding game.

Well the processor isn't use to its potential. Once we find out how to utilize both processors. It will be a beast. Also the Adreno 220 gpu is able to be overclocked. It caused screen tearing issues for the sensation I think cause of the qhd display. But I think the galaxy 2 can handle it cause of the wvga.

Exactly. Also get rid of TW and use launcher pro, efficient widgets and the phone flies.. Faster than my rooted MT4G and I use even more apps and widgets

The problem is getting the cores to work normally. The fartest I seen with the sensation is one core is used as garbage and data collecting. While the other fufills the task.

If anything the game itself is not optimized for the SoC, the same thing happened with CityData on the Sensation 4G when it was released. It was very choppy. Drag Racing on my Vibrant was very choppy and that SoC has a very powerful graphics processor. It was fixed in later releases..
The choppiness is also probably do to optimization not being totally up to snuff. It's still snappy in my opinion. You also have to realize that it's loaded with roughly 15 junk apps, who knows what those are doing in the background.

So far I've had zero troubles, i'm very happy with mine. I can understand if you're coming from the international that you would be upset if you were having a different experience.
I don't worry about the throttling too much because I am using wifi when i'm using the most data. My cap is 5 GB anyway, that's a lot of data.
I am still trying to use touchwiz and am still enjoying my experience. I imagine I will try another launcher in the near future.
I come from a Motorola Defy with CM7, that is the experience that I compare to so you can imagine i'm like a pig in mud. Even Swype seems more accurate on this thing.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App

Those topic is my exact feeling on this phone. I feel like i paid for a galaxy s 1.5. Still a fast phone, just doesn't quite live up to its name unfortunately
You may also notice that the sound quality isn't up to par either . Bass is almost non existent
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App

I have an Exhibit 4G and the difference in bass response is very small, like a few dB's on the low end. Semi fixable with Equalizer

i actually prefer the speaker on this phone compared to the international. Louder and clearer

When i installed adw ex on this thing i literally yelled wow! Touchwiz really holds back some of the performance and remember guys they had to switch to this processor to get us the 42mbps speeds....and i think it was worth it the sprint or att versions dont hold a candle to this things data speeds (at least in nyc) my friends att version got 300kbps down on speed test! epic got 6mbps and i got 12mbps once this thing gets OC/UV and a rom without touchwiz its gonna be insane

Man I must have gotten a rare device cause this thing ZOOMS.
I have gone through a Nexus One, Galaxy S, Photon 4G, HTC Sensation, Galaxy S2 Int and this phone and it definitely keeps up with the fastest of the bunch.
I run GoLauncher on my phone and it is beautiful, ADW is a great launcher too.
My data speeds have been decent in San Francisco....16-18Mbps down and 2-3Mbps up. So not blazing really but fastish.
Anywho....I like this device a lot. I don't see it as any better or worse than the Int one except I actually enjoy the form factor of that one more and it runs vanilla. I needed faster data speeds though.
Cheers

[Q] Why is scrolling so choppy on this phone...ALL launchers?

I'm coming from a Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy S I) that's currently on CM7 and has been on Froyo prior to that.
On both CM7 and Froyo, the Vibrant is FAR smoother in scrolling than the new T-Mobile Galaxy S2. I have no idea why. On the same settings using 3 launchers (Go Launcher, Launcher Pro, ADW), the Vibrant ALWAYS wins. And it's not even close.
The Galaxy SII appears to be microstuttering as it's scrolling. I tried all ROMS here. Literally spent 6 hours trying them all today and all of them have this issue. Is it the Samsung base ROM which has a big flaw? I can't imagine a dual core phone can't handle something that a single phone does easily.
Any comments on this? Am I doing something wrong?
u got a lemon. also had the vibrant. this phone is allot faster even on stock
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
Umm. I'm not saying it's not fast. It's a very fast phone with everything.
I'm saying scrolling just is very choppy.
PS: I benched a 3400 Quadrant and all other benchmarks "seem" normal for scores.
did you enable the setting for smooth transition?
also let the launcher cache the icons first
im using Zeam launcher and i dont see the choppyness and i also had a vibrant running cm7. dbl check everything on ur phone

Well...it isn't lag per say. It scrolls just fine.
But it's not smooth. On my old Vibrant, it would be BUTTER smooth, like it was running at 100fps (in reality it was 60fps). Here I have the feeling it barely runs at 20-25fps.
What is interesting...NO matter how demanding of a live wallpaper or simple static picture wallpaper I use, smoothness doesn't improve or worsen. Hence, it's not that the phone can't cope with it. It's that it just refuses to render at a smooth 60fps.
Perhaps the smoothest I got was using a VERY demanding live wallpaper and Go Launcher. For some reason that made the phone go relatively OK in smoothness. I also used dsexton702's Universal Shot XIX which seemed to improve scrolling...still not up to par though.

I've noticed the same. I suspect people who haven't aren't as sensitive to this sort of thing. Wonder if it is maybe a framerate cap thing?
Same here I think it's the video CPU. Movies R also a bit choppy. I had the vibrant also sold it for this. Qualcomm always had BS gpu. The gpu needs To be optimized for the choppiness to go away. The gPU in the vibrant is probably better than gpu in the gs2

Have to agree the hummingbird gpu was absolutely amazing and the exynos is even better ....my friends ATT sgs2 has that immediate reaction to touch and extreme smoothness that I missed from my vibrant......this phone is fast as hell no doubt but it's not as.......urgent lol

Actually no.
But I do suspect it may be something with the 2D acceleration. Quadrant is reporting HALF the 2D score of my Vibrant on this phone....350 usually. That's terrible. Usually low-end phones like the LG Optimus One get that score.
Like i said before, im using adw ex. Under (settings-ui-drawer) there is an option for "snap scroll". if you uncheck that box, it makes scrolling much smoother. i havent used go launcher, but both tw and launcher2 are smooth.
Edit: i just tried launcher pro and i agree its is choppy.

Don't base anything on Quadrant. It's the iphone of benchmarks (most popular but not the best) Iran Quadrant 3 times straight and the score is inconsistent to say the least. The tmo gs2 is fast but not buttery smooth. TMo went with this processor for internet speeds. Trying to market the so called 42mbps speed. Who the hell needs that much speed on a mobile device anyway. unless youre tethering. The speed will bottleneck on the phone because of the high ping usually around 500-800ms. To get smoothness on this phone. We need to optimized roms for gpu if thats possible with the crappy GPU. Other than that. We will only get the fast not the butter. BTW i got scores of 900-1100 on Vibrant 2300-3300 on gs2. the gs2 was faster. But the vibrant did everything smootherand played h.264 movies smoother
Im very sensative to lag and the fact only time I see it is when I go home and that has been fixed with a custom rom.
Also im using touchwiz

I partially figured it out. Using adw solves the choppiness. Adw is optimized for dual core. That's the reason i think. Still don't get why a single core can't handle other launchers though.
Then again, Qudrant 2D benchmark is extremely low compared to other phones. There's something up that GPU which isn't working right.

If you could get a rezound you wouldn't rather get the nexus? Rezound is using our same Qualcomm S3 MSM8600 chip.
As a phone, the S2 is absolutely fantastic. Does everything I want it to do. As a carrier, I'm still on the fence with t-mobile. Data speeds are plenty fast, but data reception seems to be a mixed bag.
well... when it comes to Reception, that is really the nature of the AWS technology which requires 2 wide bands 1700+2100 for up and down to work
so building penetration is always a compromise

Now that I am on the Galaxy S2, I can tell you that it is by far the best phone that I have ever owned. Even stock, it is absolutely blazing fast. After I put beastmod on it, the thing just flies, and this is before OCing. Keep in mind that ICS is supposed to be able to utilize dual-core technology to it's fullest so when the update comes up (it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when), our phones will be in for a nice tune-up. As for as internet speeds go, I can tell you that it is BLAZING fast. It is faster and more reliable than when I had my G2 (which was just last year).
I can't post pictures but I can tell you that the fastest I have ever gotten with my S2 (in the same service area that I tested my G2 just last year) is 31MBPS. For daily usage, I consistently get 7-14MBPS. I am downloading HD videos off of Youtube in a matter of 5-10 seconds. I am downloading and finishing music downloads as soon as it pops up in my notifications bar. The phone is fast in every way, and everything flows so well together. No lag, no hassle, it just works.
got my phone a few days back from my awesome girlfriend, amazingly fast, battery only lasts a day, from 9 till 6, as i always use data connection, 1850mhz, not much of juice for this 1.5 dual core monster, resolution is a draw back with this nice screen 4.52" i am talking about, only 480*800? meh, waiting for miui roms........ only alpha versions atm, touchwiz looks gay.
speaker is way better than i9000, louder at least! some people say they want metal back cover, i say hey, it is light!!! with this kinda size!
i would give 9 out of 10 for this phone, i wanna buy the sprint version, lol, cdma 2000. not available in china yet, too bad.
What app do I use to test for lines and blobs?

[Article] Sprint's network sucks (nothing that wasn't known before)
On a serious note, the speeds were about the same on 3g and wifi.
Nexus had slightly faster uploads on 3g/wifi. E4GT had slightly faster download avg on 3g. They are roughly tied for download on wifi. None of the numbers were very impressive, but that is the fault of the network rather than the phone.
Further supports my decision to stick with the E4GT for now. I need to be blown away in order to even contemplate switching.

Debatable.
While we will always take better download speeds, upload is used when browsing the web etc as well so having a better balance between them could give better real world usage results.

See I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, I never seem to struggle with my data connection unless I'm just in the middle of the boondocks (and in Alabama, that could be anywhere lol) and typically at that point I'm driving, not trying to browse the web. Around town and the cities where my family lives and I visit often I always get a quick connection so, again, just not enough of a difference for me. But for others it might be more than enough.
The overall specs of the Nexus just don't seem like a huge step up from the E4GT, not nearly enough for me to jump on it without waiting to see what else might be in store in the nearish future (SGSIII).

But, if you have the money or whatever, going from the SGS2 to the Galaxy Nexus IS a bit of a spec bump.

If I recall correctly the GPU in the Galaxy Nexus is a bit better.
But yes, LTE and Screen are the two noticable upgrades.
LTE will be relatively significant by the end of the year and into next...
And I can only conclude that the screen upgrade is huge for a lot of people since SO many people buy phones based on the screen.
A pure Google experience with on screen buttons (with no need to root and flash) is also apart of the package.

Ya know, I was a vibrant user, recently upgraded to the t989 and I love it (of course). If you look at the specs on the s3 you're not going to see a huge boost in performance. Slightly different aestethic design to it, a few features that, while pretty cool, are already being provided as mods for the s2, thanks to the brilliant devs here xda.
Another thing to look at is the fact that the s2 has been on the market long enough that its bugs have been worked out and there are endless options for modification.
Last but not least, tmo is offering the s2 for free? Wish we had known that was coming a couple months ago..
If it were my wallet, I'd go with the s2 and use the money on a new BBQ. Good luck with your decision and I hope you enjoy whichever device you go with.

s3 is a great phone and you should upgrade if you're on the vibrant. I could not justify upgrading from an s2 to an s3 this seems like just an incremental upgrade imo. But from the vibrant the s3 will be a huge improvement.
Honestly the one S if anything seems like the most exciting device(I know I will get flamed). If you can get around not having an SD card(I cant right now but I can see myself giving it up in the future.) I would go with that.
Metal, honestly, the s2 really meets your needs as far as what you're looking for, camera is crystal clear, even with flash in poor lighting. The phone is super responsive, never lags for me and has 4g. Certainly not trying to talk you out of the s3 tho, just saying my experience with the s2 has been very positive.

The specs of the SII vs SIII aren't too far off. They'll both perform very well (with the slight improvements going to the SIII of course). The one area that is tempting/makes me jealous about the SIII is the screen resolution. That sucker is very crisp, and makes our screen seem rather low-res.
However, having said that the SII sounds like it will meet your needs. It has a fantastic camera, and very high speeds. I'm also not sure if the SIII supports full 42mb/s like the SII does (because of the talk of a unified model), so it may be slower but if someone has more knowledge perhaps they can correct me.
When it comes down to it, it depends if you think it's worth the $200 difference. For me, I'd probably take an SII and call it a day.

Yes t mobile is having a sale this weekend only with a mail in rebate. I checked it out on the website and called customer service and they confirmed. I might get the s2 and I can always return it next week if I change my mind. Thanks for the help!

Yeah, but now they have a restocking fee.

Don't mean to high jack the thread, but..
How's many current S2 owners are jumping ship to the S3??
Just wondering because for the ones that are, we are gonna need to stick together and start a bounty for TDJ and Eugene when we get there.
Gotta have them on board.

I am not going for s3. May be i will go for next nexus or note 2 when they availble.
There is nothing new in sgs3 I mean this time Samsung did not introduced any thing first time. Many companies already released their phones with HD screen and with quad core processor.
I am expecting something unseen from Samsung but this time they did not.

For those that think its just incremental upgrade, I think not. S4 processor is greatly improved over the S3. It has improvements in battery life and power. See this website of various benchmarks and phone comparisons

The thing about this is ... if u get an s2 or s3 are u gonna run it stock... answer is probably not so next question is do u like touchwiz enough to keep it... reason for asking is that if u plan on running cm9, or aokp then the difference between the two is minimal I'd say the s3 obviously is gonna outperform the s2 but in day to day use on cm9 and aokp I'd say u wouldn't really be able to tell the difference.

I couldn't agree more. Of course the S3 is faster, but I honestly can't think of applications or situations in which the SII fails me. Sure maybe it will be 2ms faster to load the Homescreen, but we're not talking about noticeable differences. Until software catches up and creates more demanding apps (or perhaps they're out and I just don't want to use them yet), there will not be much differentiation.
I don't see the point of performing an upgrade simply for upgrade's sake. I have a desktop that's aged quite well. The processor is nearly 5.5 years old, and the graphics cards are 4 years old. There are computers that can run laps around mine, but in the end it doesn't matter because all of the programs and games I play run nearly flawlessly at max or near max settings. Sorry if that's OT, but it's the same concept.

Right, I think the question is will it get the full 42mb/s.
I see conflicting information regarding what type of 4g speeds this thing will get (I mean HSPA+ 21 or 42mb/s). Some sites say there will be a T-Mo version, and it may have the fastest quadcore while other carriers get slower ones, and then others say the phone will be unified.
Does anyone have a recent trustworthy link regarding this issue?
The s2 is great. I'd stock with it if I didn't have an upgrade available. But since I do, I'm getting the gs3. The variety of cases alone makes it better for me as I like to use multiple cases and swap them frequently.

Why not wait until the upgrade means more to you? It's not like you lose the upgrade, and it takes 2 additional years to get another.

Whildchild rom its really good fast stable
Show him pop up video play and then hand him his jaw from off the floor.
bone stock, the sgs 3 blows the 4s away in everything. the "advantage"(for less tech-savvy folk, like your typical iphone user) for iphones, is that they're easy to use. they have an easier, simpler interface- which is better for people who are not into running customized ROMs or anything.
if your friend doesn't care about modding or playing games, he would not be utilizing the better hardware and software on the SGS 3. he'd be drawn into the excellent marketing of apple, and stay content with the iphone, no matter how much they charge for minor updates.

You can't impress an Isheep. Their heads are so far up their own asses I doubt they can tell you the difference between the i4 and i4s. I'm just going to pretend these people don't exist. I get too worked up over this debate. Especially with the BS court rulings that just happened against samsung.

exactly. your average iphone user has no idea what they're missing out on, they just know apples marketing. you'd be wasting time, unless they actually utilize the plethora of features and hardware superiority of android.
i converted 4 of my friends from the iphone(3gs) to android(amaze 4g, sensation, sgs 3, etc) so far, and that was only because they realized how superior even my old htc g2 was.
Freegs3 R6 rom and Wildchlds Xquizit rom
if you want a stock based ics rom go with wildchilds xquizit v37..
if u want a jb based rom.. i am running cm 10 nightly 8 28 2012 and seems stable for now.
Stock ROM.
Just root it and remove all the bloat with Titanium backup. Features to show off:
1) Its big super AMOLED screen. Tell him it has higher resolution too.
2) Floating video thingy.
3) Put stress on how thin your phone is.

oh, and 2gb of ram, vs. the 512mb of ram in the 4s. though, you don't need much RAM when you don't have true multi-tasking

I think you mean wicked.
The most effective demonstration I have ever done for why I prefer android to iphone was probably also the simplest. I was in a location with no cell phone service, but that did have WiFi. Simple demonstration, my phone rang theirs didn't. My phone was able to make phone calls, theirs couldn't. That forced 5 iphone users to use my galaxy S3 to make phone calls, and they all decided to play with the phone after their calls were through. That led to many questions of "what else can android do that iphone can't" and statements of "I just assumed iphone was better, but I have never really looked at android phones". They are all looking now.
