Sprint Galaxy Nexus vs. Epic 4g Touch Data speed tests - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Figured you guys would be happy to see this... Just did another test this morning and got just about the same results.

That's pretty awesome to see!
QBKing you're the best- I really look forward to your videos and really appreciate all the ways your posts and videos have helped me unleash the full potential of the Epic Touch.

No it didnt

Cool to see, thanks!
How have you guys that made the switch noticed the differences in cell strength and battery life? Really contemplating on switching over, just wondering how it compares to our phone. Its my only two gripes about the E4GT. I dont get service anywhere inside.

Can't watch it at school. Can anyone recap?

Basically this thread can be merged with this thread
[Article] Sprint's network sucks (nothing that wasn't known before)
On a serious note, the speeds were about the same on 3g and wifi.
Nexus had slightly faster uploads on 3g/wifi. E4GT had slightly faster download avg on 3g. They are roughly tied for download on wifi. None of the numbers were very impressive, but that is the fault of the network rather than the phone.

Further supports my decision to stick with the E4GT for now. I need to be blown away in order to even contemplate switching.
Thanks to qbking for the video and sfhub for the recap.

Debatable.
While we will always take better download speeds, upload is used when browsing the web etc as well so having a better balance between them could give better real world usage results.

See I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, I never seem to struggle with my data connection unless I'm just in the middle of the boondocks (and in Alabama, that could be anywhere lol) and typically at that point I'm driving, not trying to browse the web. Around town and the cities where my family lives and I visit often I always get a quick connection so, again, just not enough of a difference for me. But for others it might be more than enough.
The overall specs of the Nexus just don't seem like a huge step up from the E4GT, not nearly enough for me to jump on it without waiting to see what else might be in store in the nearish future (SGSIII).

There's no doubt that, if you don't need a new phone now, waiting for the SGS3 is going to be a better decision.
But, if you have the money or whatever, going from the SGS2 to the Galaxy Nexus IS a bit of a spec bump.

I used it at a Sprint Store and I liked it. The guys working there were more impressed with my ET4G running ICS but I am still considering it when my June 1 upgrade hits on my NS4G. The S3 specs will tell the story for me

Cm9 alpha 3 was faster than the galaxy nexus I played with at sprint store. I closed all apps on both and just opened stock apps, performed basic tasks. Other than much better resolution and a bit bigger screen, why sacrifice ****ty 4g for no 4g lol

Or do u think its not quite worth the jump? You both have done right by me in the past so your opinions are valid and welcome.

Spec bump in what department exactly? If you mean LTE, then yeah, maybe for the few who will be able to use it this early.
The only other thing I see bumping up is the display resolution.

If I recall correctly the GPU in the Galaxy Nexus is a bit better.
But yes, LTE and Screen are the two noticable upgrades.
LTE will be relatively significant by the end of the year and into next...
And I can only conclude that the screen upgrade is huge for a lot of people since SO many people buy phones based on the screen.
A pure Google experience with on screen buttons (with no need to root and flash) is also apart of the package.

Yeah the resolution isn't bad and you're right, if you have the money a ged device is always fun. Especially if you're in an LTE area. But by the time lte gets big I hope to see the sgs3 anyway.
As for gpu, I would argue the Mali-400 definitely has an upper hand on the sgx540

The ET4G is the best phone I have ever owned and I don't think I have had a close 2nd. It has the best Touchwiz features the OG Epic has if you run rooted stock. Its virtually impossible to make the phone lag and battery is twice as good as my Epic was...no joke.

Galaxy Nexus ruined Christmas....

Maybe I am ungrateful for making this post but I know I am not the only one who feels like this. About a month ago I was rock in a blackberry tour not because I couldn't get any other phone but because I was semi happy with it and no other phone period really had any affect on me.
Then one day I saw an epic touch in Craigslist for 200 and thought it was a scam but it was real. At first I had the phone. Its big, Los, battery, etc. Was gonna sell it for profit but I already sold my tour and the deal was just so good. Then started rooting and ics theme and tweaking made me fall in love.
Then got my gf a nexus s and put ics on it and it began. Then I went to Verizon and touched the galaxy nexus. It will cost me 1000 dollars to switch to Verizon with everybody. The physical of this phone to me is beyond any phone I have ever touched. Ice cream sand which is what android was always supposed to be.
Our screen is better in colors and our gpu is better and we have an SD card slot. But all that doesn't matter. Samsung will destroy ics with touchwiz and then the waiting game will start for a pure rom.
We all want the nexus lets just face it. The minute sprint has it most of you are gone like me.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
The only real life difference will be ics ... and its not worth $200 plus a wasted upgrade to me ... would much rather save it until quad core 2.0 GHz processors WITH ics come out like 3 months after it gets to sprint ...
Actually, I don't want a nexus, or galaxy nexus that is, with those ugly ass on-screen buttons. This phone is better IMHO. Now, if the SGS3 gets released with ICS, I will be even more sure I don't want the galaxy nexus. Touchwiz or no touchwiz. The S line is rock solid, and people that understand that, know that. (TMO's maybe not so much...)
But that's just me.

OP, speak for yourself but owners of the E4GT are smarter then just buying the same phone only with ICS. We need more of an upgrade.

Yeah I know but physical design has to count for something. The nexus fits in the hand just right. Anyway I know its not that serious its just sad to see what HTC and Samsung will do to these phones. Give customers a choice. Most people won't root there phone.
Google has to stop selling out, yeah tons of people have android but probably 90 percent of them don't even know what android can really do.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I can wait.
I need external SD support for my music and movies.
I can wait for devs to ready ICS ROMs, and replace TouchWiz with ADW.
The only thing I would like to have is the HD resolution, but again, I can wait.
My next phone will be a quad-core with HD resolution.
This will probably mean the GS III.
Hey we all can say we can wait but that's easy to say since you don't have a choice. When or if sprint gets the nexus then will see if you wait.
At the end of the day we still have great phones but don't act like the s3 is around the corner knowing sprint it will be September again. And we still don't know what the s3 will have.

Sorry but I have ics on my ns4g and I would not trade this phone to the hardware inferior one just because of ics. I wasn't that impressed with ics. I'm running peter Alfonzo's ics nightly. Everything works on the ROM, so its not because something isn't working. Ics seems slower on the same phone versus 2.3.6. I'd rather take better performance over eye candy.

Same here. I am running aosp's v43 with Ezekeel's Glados kernel on my NS4G and I can wait for ICS on this phone. I have no desire to get the GN at all. From what I have read, the battery and performance is inferior. If people can't wait, there are a couple of great ICS themes to hold you over...

We are not talking about the nexus s as I have tried all those rooms and they are slower because its still very new is it recall fair to compare it this early.
Second this phone the epic and nexus are pretty much the same phone but.
Nexus looks better feels better because its slimmer. On a design point it kills this phone ( this phone is nice too but nexus is an evolution of what phones will be )
And the most important thing is it is a nexus. Is anybody here looking for to touchwiz please tell me. Do you really want Samsung over Google. I trust Google is better with there own software os.
I can't even put a case on this phone or it feels like I am holding a brick. Sorry to say this because I like my phone but its design is like somebody ironed an iPhone flat. And with a case it feels like a HTC phone.

From what I have seen I would have no reason to upgrade from my current E4GT to a nexus just for new updated software.

You can't be serious, so you hate ics or something. I'm not saying this is a bad choice but wow.
I like Samsung making phones not skinning them. I don't even know why Samsung makes touchwiz besides to make people think its an iPhone clone. And now with ics why even waste manpower the best skin is already there.

Different shape
Different software

The two phones couldn't be more different and I'm sorry but the E4GT is superior in almost every regard.

IMO it's not about being a "hater". Sure ICS is sweet, and it would rock to have a Nexus Galaxy, but to spend the cash(1k according to OP) just for a phone upgrade is something in the likes of greedy little kids with the latest toys. It just doesn't make sense given we all have great phones.
The specs on our phones are great, so unless someone can jump on for cheap it just doesn't make sense. If Sprint got it people might be more interested but paying ETF + whatever it'll cost is just silly to do for essentially an OD update.

No real point in upgrading to a sprint lte phone right now as there is no lte towers. You will be stuck with sprints slow 3g. Best to stick with the e4gt until the galaxy siii comes out.

You are right. However in my house I have no 4G except upstairs window. When home just keep wifi on and use my own internet. Even 3G and calls iffy in house. Without my Airwave my phone would be a brick most of time. Hope so called Network Vision improves coverage. I have no idea when lte is turned on if that will be any better than my current wimax 4g.

Your input SGS3 to buy or not?

Father's Day is coming, so is the S3 and Evo LTE. My contract expired in April and I'm eligible for an upgrade. So my wife asked me, do you want me to gift you the S3...
I am perfectly happy with the S2 and beside the NFC of S3 I'm not too thrilled. The question is: (a) get the S3 or wait for something special might pop up around Christmas time?
I would get the s3. Even just to play around with on wifi if you want to use your e4gt still. I plan to do this, as I get (ok) wimaxx but am not anywhere near any of the first roll out areas for lte. Just my suggestion. This phone is great, but I want to play with that new too lol. If you are near lte tho then it is no question. S3 imo.

there already a few threads open about this fellas..
It's the next "big thing" so I would get it unless you are considering the iPhone 5. You could always get it and sell it on Craigslist for like $600 and keep your S2.
I don't know, the ET4g and sprint in general have left a bad taste in my mouth with radio issues... I'm thinking my next phone will be a HTC or maybe a moto.

Man I would LOVE those speeds. I'm at around 3.5-4.5mbps on a good day. 3g is horrid tho, under .1 sometimes, as high as .4 rarely. In the process of reading up on the PRL tweaks tho, that should help a lot on my 3g. But I'm that guy that reads everything about stuff before I try it, so I'm slow

My strategy is, IF I get the s3 (kinda doubtful), the decision that would make the most sense, would be to WAIT until LTE is fully deployed and active in your area. If not, you will be stuck on 3g for quite a while until it happens, whenever that might be. Don't be in a rush. I know how hard that is to practice when you're a xda kind of person, but that makes the most sense to me on many areas. So many people are very frustrated with 3g performance lately, it wouldn't be logical to force yourself into that mode for god knows how long. For me, the deal breaker is the camera with the not such a big deal improvements done to it. Yes, faster camera is better but no substantial improvements with low light, better f stop, I will pass. When I had it, I loved the iPhone 4s camera, but the cons outweighed the pros IMO. Even if you have to wait up to another year for LTE, the s4 might be around then and I would hope that one would be a lot better than the 3. With my experiences with a couple of htcs, they are too temperature sensative and prone to hardware failure issues when compared to all the samsungs I've owned. I'm not a Samsung fan either, I've just had much less problems with them and they're much easier to do custom things to like rooting and roms.
Besides, you said it yourself, you're happy with what you have already. Also, pentile s3 screen, eww.
Well if you know you want that phone get it asap so your new contract starts being used asap.... Means new upgrade sooner down the road. I just got mine in October or whenever the iphone came out. Personally the s3 and the galaxy nexus are the only two phones that I would consider over the et4g. As you can tell I am alittle partial to Samsung as all my previous phones who weren't Samsung I've had problems with excluding the HTC sensation

Ya know, I was a vibrant user, recently upgraded to the t989 and I love it (of course). If you look at the specs on the s3 you're not going to see a huge boost in performance. Slightly different aestethic design to it, a few features that, while pretty cool, are already being provided as mods for the s2, thanks to the brilliant devs here xda.
Another thing to look at is the fact that the s2 has been on the market long enough that its bugs have been worked out and there are endless options for modification.
Last but not least, tmo is offering the s2 for free? Wish we had known that was coming a couple months ago..
If it were my wallet, I'd go with the s2 and use the money on a new BBQ. Good luck with your decision and I hope you enjoy whichever device you go with.

Yes t mobile is having a sale this weekend only with a mail in rebate. I checked it out on the website and called customer service and they confirmed. I might get the s2 and I can always return it next week if I change my mind. Thanks for the help!

Really I just want something faster and 4g and a better camera. What's your opinions on how the s2 performs in these categories?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
s3 is a great phone and you should upgrade if you're on the vibrant. I could not justify upgrading from an s2 to an s3 this seems like just an incremental upgrade imo. But from the vibrant the s3 will be a huge improvement.
Honestly the one S if anything seems like the most exciting device(I know I will get flamed). If you can get around not having an SD card(I cant right now but I can see myself giving it up in the future.) I would go with that.
Metal, honestly, the s2 really meets your needs as far as what you're looking for, camera is crystal clear, even with flash in poor lighting. The phone is super responsive, never lags for me and has 4g. Certainly not trying to talk you out of the s3 tho, just saying my experience with the s2 has been very positive.

The specs of the SII vs SIII aren't too far off. They'll both perform very well (with the slight improvements going to the SIII of course). The one area that is tempting/makes me jealous about the SIII is the screen resolution. That sucker is very crisp, and makes our screen seem rather low-res.
However, having said that the SII sounds like it will meet your needs. It has a fantastic camera, and very high speeds. I'm also not sure if the SIII supports full 42mb/s like the SII does (because of the talk of a unified model), so it may be slower but if someone has more knowledge perhaps they can correct me.
When it comes down to it, it depends if you think it's worth the $200 difference. For me, I'd probably take an SII and call it a day.

Yeah, but now they have a restocking fee.

Don't mean to high jack the thread, but..
How's many current S2 owners are jumping ship to the S3??
Just wondering because for the ones that are, we are gonna need to stick together and start a bounty for TDJ and Eugene when we get there.
Gotta have them on board.

I am not going for s3. May be i will go for next nexus or note 2 when they availble.
There is nothing new in sgs3 I mean this time Samsung did not introduced any thing first time. Many companies already released their phones with HD screen and with quad core processor.
I am expecting something unseen from Samsung but this time they did not.

For those that think its just incremental upgrade, I think not. S4 processor is greatly improved over the S3. It has improvements in battery life and power. See this website of various benchmarks and phone comparisons

The thing about this is ... if u get an s2 or s3 are u gonna run it stock... answer is probably not so next question is do u like touchwiz enough to keep it... reason for asking is that if u plan on running cm9, or aokp then the difference between the two is minimal I'd say the s3 obviously is gonna outperform the s2 but in day to day use on cm9 and aokp I'd say u wouldn't really be able to tell the difference.

Can that run on T-Mobile HSPA+ network? I heard it can, but not sure.

I couldn't agree more. Of course the S3 is faster, but I honestly can't think of applications or situations in which the SII fails me. Sure maybe it will be 2ms faster to load the Homescreen, but we're not talking about noticeable differences. Until software catches up and creates more demanding apps (or perhaps they're out and I just don't want to use them yet), there will not be much differentiation.
I don't see the point of performing an upgrade simply for upgrade's sake. I have a desktop that's aged quite well. The processor is nearly 5.5 years old, and the graphics cards are 4 years old. There are computers that can run laps around mine, but in the end it doesn't matter because all of the programs and games I play run nearly flawlessly at max or near max settings. Sorry if that's OT, but it's the same concept.

Right, I think the question is will it get the full 42mb/s.
I see conflicting information regarding what type of 4g speeds this thing will get (I mean HSPA+ 21 or 42mb/s). Some sites say there will be a T-Mo version, and it may have the fastest quadcore while other carriers get slower ones, and then others say the phone will be unified.
Does anyone have a recent trustworthy link regarding this issue?
The s2 is great. I'd stock with it if I didn't have an upgrade available. But since I do, I'm getting the gs3. The variety of cases alone makes it better for me as I like to use multiple cases and swap them frequently.
Deebo took your bike too?!

Why not wait until the upgrade means more to you? It's not like you lose the upgrade, and it takes 2 additional years to get another.

What about our JB leak?????

Seems like nothing has dropped for our phone, maybe soon I hope, let see how long it would take.
Sfhub where are you?????

I'm going to say that it will be at least 10 more days at minimum. I have a feeling they will want some good news put out on them after all the recent negative news.

I hope they release it soon but they seriously deserve the bad press for releasing that piece of crap Note 10.1. People new to android tablets getting it will never touch android tablets again after using that P.O.S.
The Asus TF700 needs to be better marketed/advertised since it's the best tablet (better than iPad 3 IMO) out there.
Yeah Sprint hasn't finished a build for phone yet =(

Oh how I wish sfhub would move over to this phone. He is single handedly responsible for getting me going on rooting and flashing. His one-click packages are unbeatable.
In the meantime, try out cm10. Might as well get used to JB speed.
I remember reading that our official JB release is on August 29th. Not too long before we get an official update.

Really? I remember it specifically saying Sprint...I'll see if I can find the link.
EDIT: Nope. You're right. All other sources are saying that that's the international version. I really wish we'd get ours sooner. I guess Samsung and Sprint want to get a chance to bloat our phones with unnecessary stuff again.
thianks
Not just the international version, T-Mo also has a leaked OTA.

Do you have Note? I have one and I seriously can't figure out why it's getting such negative press. Had a TF700 and a Prime and a OG Trans.

Nope. People like the Original note but not the 10.1. The bad press came from this review, the verge, and other sites.
I have the TF700 and just specs-wise it's far superior and cheaper IIRC. The build quality and design is on-par and subjectively better than the iPad 3.
The Note 10.1 feels like it was made last year and build quality is absolutely horrible, even if it was a $100 chinese tablet. Sadly, it's a $500 tablet. And what's with the ****ty res screen? They make WQXGA-like screens for the iPad 3 and the TF700 has a full HD screen but they still use a non-HD screen.
I think that the tmo version could JumpStart our development too
Cm10 was built from scratch while the tmo jb is very close to what out phone would use
Although a new kernel would probably have to be made

Jellybean is smooth no doubt, but it's not optimized yet so touchwiz is actually faster it seems. (basing my opinion on fps for many games.)
That sux man. The least sprint could do right now would be giving us JB. Since I have gotten this phone the reception has been horrible and 4G is a joke and I live in Dallas. If I'm not connected to WiFi I can't use my phone.

I feel you.....I live in Dallas too and 3g sucks and I barely get signal around Dallas. Being Dallas is a big city, I'm surprised the speeds are so horrible.

The note is so much faster and smoother its not close actually having owned both tablets. Asus and their build quality is just as bad. Read the threads comparing both many Asus owners have left for the note.
