I'm coming from a Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy S I) that's currently on CM7 and has been on Froyo prior to that.
On both CM7 and Froyo, the Vibrant is FAR smoother in scrolling than the new T-Mobile Galaxy S2. I have no idea why. On the same settings using 3 launchers (Go Launcher, Launcher Pro, ADW), the Vibrant ALWAYS wins. And it's not even close.
The Galaxy SII appears to be microstuttering as it's scrolling. I tried all ROMS here. Literally spent 6 hours trying them all today and all of them have this issue. Is it the Samsung base ROM which has a big flaw? I can't imagine a dual core phone can't handle something that a single phone does easily.
Any comments on this? Am I doing something wrong?
u got a lemon. also had the vibrant. this phone is allot faster even on stock

Umm. I'm not saying it's not fast. It's a very fast phone with everything.
I'm saying scrolling just is very choppy.
PS: I benched a 3400 Quadrant and all other benchmarks "seem" normal for scores.
did you enable the setting for smooth transition?
also let the launcher cache the icons first
im using Zeam launcher and i dont see the choppyness and i also had a vibrant running cm7. dbl check everything on ur phone

Not sure what it might be but maybe once we get a kernel for the phone it might fix that issue

Well...it isn't lag per say. It scrolls just fine.
But it's not smooth. On my old Vibrant, it would be BUTTER smooth, like it was running at 100fps (in reality it was 60fps). Here I have the feeling it barely runs at 20-25fps.
What is interesting...NO matter how demanding of a live wallpaper or simple static picture wallpaper I use, smoothness doesn't improve or worsen. Hence, it's not that the phone can't cope with it. It's that it just refuses to render at a smooth 60fps.
Perhaps the smoothest I got was using a VERY demanding live wallpaper and Go Launcher. For some reason that made the phone go relatively OK in smoothness. I also used dsexton702's Universal Shot XIX which seemed to improve scrolling...still not up to par though.

I've noticed the same. I suspect people who haven't aren't as sensitive to this sort of thing. Wonder if it is maybe a framerate cap thing?
Same here I think it's the video CPU. Movies R also a bit choppy. I had the vibrant also sold it for this. Qualcomm always had BS gpu. The gpu needs To be optimized for the choppiness to go away. The gPU in the vibrant is probably better than gpu in the gs2

Have to agree the hummingbird gpu was absolutely amazing and the exynos is even better ....my friends ATT sgs2 has that immediate reaction to touch and extreme smoothness that I missed from my vibrant......this phone is fast as hell no doubt but it's not as.......urgent lol

Actually no.
But I do suspect it may be something with the 2D acceleration. Quadrant is reporting HALF the 2D score of my Vibrant on this phone....350 usually. That's terrible. Usually low-end phones like the LG Optimus One get that score.
Like i said before, im using adw ex. Under (settings-ui-drawer) there is an option for "snap scroll". if you uncheck that box, it makes scrolling much smoother. i havent used go launcher, but both tw and launcher2 are smooth.
Edit: i just tried launcher pro and i agree its is choppy.

Don't base anything on Quadrant. It's the iphone of benchmarks (most popular but not the best) Iran Quadrant 3 times straight and the score is inconsistent to say the least. The tmo gs2 is fast but not buttery smooth. TMo went with this processor for internet speeds. Trying to market the so called 42mbps speed. Who the hell needs that much speed on a mobile device anyway. unless youre tethering. The speed will bottleneck on the phone because of the high ping usually around 500-800ms. To get smoothness on this phone. We need to optimized roms for gpu if thats possible with the crappy GPU. Other than that. We will only get the fast not the butter. BTW i got scores of 900-1100 on Vibrant 2300-3300 on gs2. the gs2 was faster. But the vibrant did everything smootherand played h.264 movies smoother
Im very sensative to lag and the fact only time I see it is when I go home and that has been fixed with a custom rom.

I partially figured it out. Using adw solves the choppiness. Adw is optimized for dual core. That's the reason i think. Still don't get why a single core can't handle other launchers though.
Then again, Qudrant 2D benchmark is extremely low compared to other phones. There's something up that GPU which isn't working right.

Correct. It's non-optimized junk. Samsung just threw the SoC in there and called it a day.

i sold my european galaxy s II , took 300 from it and just got this yesterday, because it was my only
option, i could have gone with att's version but no unlimited data.
I then realized you get throttled to edge, which in my area is just as good as no data at all.
So right now im not really sure if i should return it for the att..
I immediately noticed a choppy lagness... not in terms of performance because this phone is a beast. In comparison to the exynos, the hercules gets anhilated.
I immediately noticed just from switching screens on twiz.
The international just felt so much faster and responsive. New screens would appear and close in the blink of an eye.
I am still happy about this phone....
...but I was lagging playing dragon fly??????? What the hell is this..
I still like this phone and I have faith in it and will overclock her.....but whats up with this slowddown guys?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA Premium App
Just as you said, the Exynos is simply the better processor. The Hercules definitely has a certain choppiness at times that isn't present in the AT&T/Sprint/Int. version. Hopefully, overclocking or some additional updates will help out with this though. This is using the same cpu as the Touchpad and that easily overclocks to 1.8-1.9 Ghz. Still very fast as it is though.
Sent from my Galaxy S II using XDA Premium app
yeah still vey fast i completely agree
i understand they did this to achieve the data speeds but it just doesnt feel like a galaxy s II.
Atts screen is too small for my taste i like 4.37-4.5, I have huge hands.
this is basically a rant, but i do look forward to see where development takes us
still baffled about dragon fly.....its not really a demanding game.

Well the processor isn't use to its potential. Once we find out how to utilize both processors. It will be a beast. Also the Adreno 220 gpu is able to be overclocked. It caused screen tearing issues for the sensation I think cause of the qhd display. But I think the galaxy 2 can handle it cause of the wvga.

The problem is getting the cores to work normally. The fartest I seen with the sensation is one core is used as garbage and data collecting. While the other fufills the task.
If anything the game itself is not optimized for the SoC, the same thing happened with CityData on the Sensation 4G when it was released. It was very choppy. Drag Racing on my Vibrant was very choppy and that SoC has a very powerful graphics processor. It was fixed in later releases..
The choppiness is also probably do to optimization not being totally up to snuff. It's still snappy in my opinion. You also have to realize that it's loaded with roughly 15 junk apps, who knows what those are doing in the background.
So far I've had zero troubles, i'm very happy with mine. I can understand if you're coming from the international that you would be upset if you were having a different experience.
I don't worry about the throttling too much because I am using wifi when i'm using the most data. My cap is 5 GB anyway, that's a lot of data.
I am still trying to use touchwiz and am still enjoying my experience. I imagine I will try another launcher in the near future.
I come from a Motorola Defy with CM7, that is the experience that I compare to so you can imagine i'm like a pig in mud. Even Swype seems more accurate on this thing.

Those topic is my exact feeling on this phone. I feel like i paid for a galaxy s 1.5. Still a fast phone, just doesn't quite live up to its name unfortunately

Man I must have gotten a rare device cause this thing ZOOMS.
I have gone through a Nexus One, Galaxy S, Photon 4G, HTC Sensation, Galaxy S2 Int and this phone and it definitely keeps up with the fastest of the bunch.
I run GoLauncher on my phone and it is beautiful, ADW is a great launcher too.
My data speeds have been decent in San Francisco....16-18Mbps down and 2-3Mbps up. So not blazing really but fastish.
Anywho....I like this device a lot. I don't see it as any better or worse than the Int one except I actually enjoy the form factor of that one more and it runs vanilla. I needed faster data speeds though.

For one a stock Hercules usually runs around 3,200+ in quadrants. Secondly quadrant scores are never consistent. If the scores you've posted above were consistent numbers based on both the Skyrocket and Hercules then I'd say that the Skyrocket's software is more optimized than ours, which I don't believe that it is.

I remember mines doing 3,200+ in quadrant on stock non rooted rom. Every user will have a different number. Check YouTube videos and you will see different numbers in Quadrant. Quadrant is always to be taken with a grain of salt. It is fun to see those numbers, but what do those numbers actually mean? It does not translate into what your actually day to day performance will be. I've never played with the Skyrocket but I can bet my last dollar that the performance will be the same as what we have now, unless Samsung optimized the software a little more on that phone vs ours. The Quadrant numbers are very similar to what I've seen on the Hercules.

Does having a phone with a higher quadrant score keep you warm at night? Does it make you smarter? Does it make you better looking? Will it make you more wealthy? Does it flex and tower and laugh at phones with lower scores? Do you cower and run from your friends with phones who's quadrant scores are higher than your phone's?
People seem way too focused on an irrelevant number that fluctuates quite a bit.
Is your phone smooth? Is it lag free? Can it play the newest and hottest games? How's the battery life?
I pitty (not to mention laugh at) those that feel like their phone is terrible if some number that doesn't really matter in real life performance isn't higher than the phone from their neighbors, the Joneses.
Here you go, happy?
By the way stock numbers were between 3200-3600 for me.
#Havingablast w/ my SGS2
Pull your SD card out and rerun Quadrant, run it 3-4 times in a row.
On my Telus S2x I hit 3800 usually after the 3rd test.
With the SD card in hits 2800~3100
Quadrant is a POS, it's not accurate with recent phones.
Check out Vellamo
It was helpful with diagnosing an issue on an evo last night but the numbers don't mean anything. The guy didn't know how bad his problem was until he ran quadrant and saw how it performed. He removed his script and the performance was better.
It was fun for me to run the side by side with him to see the differences and he did end up calling me dirty names.

it's also possible the source code from the skyrocket might be more optimized than ours

[Q]Tmobile Galaxy S II vs. AT&T Skyrocket Benchmarks: Whats up?
So the new Skyrocket from AT&T is basically just like our phones (same processor, screen size, ram, gpu, etc) but it has an LTE radio for AT&T's '4g' service.
So from what I would understand the phones, they should perform on benchmarks the same right? They even have the same android version number (2.3.5), BUT the skyrocket is killing it on benchmarks! Seemingly very superior to our phones, here is the engadget review

Yeah i've done my own quadrant and my results are usually higher than what engagdet got but still not as high as the skyrocket.
I love my phone so this isn't a flame starter, but my friends skyrocket seems really fast and buttery smooth, whereas occasionally my phone has some very Slight lag.
I'm just curious if the skyrocket maybe has better optimization or something? Has to be software since the hardware is the same right?

At the end of the video when the website is fully loaded is when I get the most lag (minute 00:54 till the end, the web is loaded). Anyway this doesn't happen on the Galaxy S2, that is why I am surprised. So it seems everyone is experiencing lag, but the reviews say it's the best browser ever on android. I can't comprehend that bull****.
P.S. If anyone has doubts and thinks the lag is because of the web that was loading. I can upload tomorrow a video to show them that there is the same lag. Let's try to be objective please.
That isn't really a fair site to test on. It is loaded with images, and other crap that will slow it down. It lags on my droid3 my bionic my thunderbolt and my rezound. The only thing it doesn't lag on is my iPhone which gives processing priority to touch user input. All web page processing/loading stops when you touch the screen.
Did you try to replicate the issue on a more average page?
It is true that my galaxy nexus is the slowest of all my phones but that's because it has old 2007 technology GPU in it but most other sites it handles just fine.

Didnt see the video but Ics uses a browser similar to honeycomb/iOS. Yes, iOS. In the sense that, for smoother scrolling, it loads in tiles. Where gingerbread and others did more software rendering on the whole thing so it loaded all the content more but scrolling was stuttery and such. Basically its a newer thing google is doing and there are still kinks. like honeycomb, heavy image content it will still kind of hiccup (ics is better than honeycomb in that regard) and you'll see blank white tiles if you scroll too fast

Lol...uhhh no. The galaxy nexus has an older technology gpu if you compair to razr or rezound. While it doesn't mean much in normal situations as it is sufficiently powerful, dogging it out on the verge bloated website and moving all the images around you'll notice a bit more lag.... like it even matters because that fat site is slow on every device.
And whatever you mean by the "every gpu is 2 years old" is beyond me... because it is simply untrue. Please go do research...Im not going to hold your hand on it but ill give you a link to start. http://www.google.com
Btw, 2 years in smartphone market is ancient. Look at the specs today vs 2 years ago... and btw, 2007 was 4 years ago... not 2.

Now that I have seen the pics the graphics look a little lower, but it doesn't bother me. It plays smooth. I won't trade smoothness for better graphics.

I have not really had a problem with the high-end games. Good luck.
I'm not worried about performance, I'm worried about heat. I want to hook my phone up to my TV, Bluetooth a controller to it, and play ff3 and ff1 on it that way. Would my phone melt in the process? I know with Bluetooth going, and the phone being charging through the mhl adapter, I'm scared of ruining my phone. Any feedback I would greatly appreciate it.

Mine gets warm doing the exact same thing but nothing more.
So nothing that will hurt the phone?

I just dunk mine under water when it gets a little too hot. But only 1" of water! Any more than that could be dangerous.

Make sure you lay the phone face down so the camera is facing up too. The heat disperses quicker through the speaker grill.

I was thinking the same thing. Even the one with dunking it in water. Always a couple of people that are going to troll. Kind of funny though.

C'mon - learn the difference between a troll and a obvious joke.
(protip: you can't really "watercool" your phone)
Lol I kind of figured. Just want to make sure I wouldn't destroy my phone by having so many connections going to it at one time

I dont how your experiencing lags in NOVA 3 on a S3.
It runs smoothly with all the effects like the particles falling from sky...etc on my Galaxy S2.

I'm not having any issues with lag either. I play Dead Trigger and Shadowgun with the graphics on high. Gotta love the gameklip + ps3 controller!

I've been having lag issues with intense graphical games like NOVA 3, which I thought was strange since it ran on my SII so smoothly. I've finally gotten it stomped out, I installed KT747 kernel and played around, finally got smooth performance by switching the governor. I personally use abyssplug/bfq. Gaming is now liquid smooth, even when underclocked to 1350. Try it out folks.

not troll, just a pathetic attempt at humor
Played with a Friend's International Note 2 recently and was shocked to see the Quadrant Benchmark scores to be above 7081. No root, no custom ROM, Pure Stock N7100. I ran the tests on his phone several times and the average was between 6900 and 7100.
Our T889's can only go up to 6400 and on average, 5900 - 6000.
I know these are just numbers and don't have any significant impact on the phone's performance but,
What gives?
If I may speculate, our phones do have extra crap from T-Mobile that's consuming RAM and clock cycles constantly while the international Note 2 doesn't. That's the best theory is could think of. I ran Quadrant earlier and got ~4200 something on my Note 2 while getting ~5700 something on my T-Mobile SGS3.

FWIW, I am running Jedi Master 8 ROM with SaberKernel 8 on a T-Mo Note 2, and I just got 7008 on Quadrant. I don't know if that's due to crapware being left out of the ROM, or the non-stock kernel, or something else, but at least it demonstrates it's not a hardware limitation.
If you are getting in the range of 4000, that's because you have power-saving mode enabled. Disable that! Lol.
I honestly don't know what T-Mobile services are running in the background, can you please shed some more light on this.
All I see is T-Mobile's My Account always running in the background.
I always have ~470mb of RAM used of 1.75gb when there is nothing active.
Is the kernel that bad in the Carrier Note 2's?
I don't want to root my phone. :crying:
tmobile roms always score lower than the n7105 roms no matter what i did a test
What is our stock cpu speeds?
Sent from my GT-N7105 using xda app-developers app
1.6Ghz, same as the N7100.

I wish I could decide it they really matter. Some say the scores matter and some say they dont.

That was the problem! I guess checking the power-saving settings was an oversight and one that gimped my Note 2. I noticed Quadrant reported my CPU clock speed at 1.1 GHz and I couldn't figure out why until I checked the power-saving settings. Problem solved! :good:
Now I'm getting about ~5800 from quadrant
I have only flashed 3 roms for the last 6 months just became a member. The JDEVIL Roms with no kernel on my phone score around 8500 . Im impressed. I like quads . They may not be 100 percent on real life feel. But you csn kind of use them as a gauge. That OP is a nice guy as well and I like that too
I need to root my phone, lol.
My experience is this...
On stock, I never came across a game that this phone made unplayable by way of graphics, sound or any other phathomable benchmark
On Custom Roms based on my own and others' test all games are just as good, play-wise, but with better battery life and overall phone longevity
Dont get me wrong, some games are just better played with a controller.... if thats a knock on GNII then its also a knock on every other phone made
As far as Xperia, it stock, vs GNII stock, may be better but I know the capability is there with the GNII (emulators will eventually pick up) and if im not mistaken there are already some options available that can bring the GNII very comparable to the Xperia, while also being an overall better PHONE

Lol... yes, battery/productivity/awesomeness is all improved (and not only are there roms that stock users lose absolutely anything with, but as the OP just metioned, you can gain so much more) ...thanxs to so many devs that I could spend all night referencing

I have got over 9000+ on my ROM which is just a tweaked, debloated stock base.

I just ran it on my stock T-Mobile Note 2 and I got a score of 5671. It's a great score imho, considering I'm all stock and going to stay that way. I just find it crazy how much T-mobile's boat ware lowers our benchmark scores. I find it doesn't effect real time performance in any way. Just that it does mess with benchmark scores. Not really a issue if you ask me.
I love my N2

What would I lose network wise using an International Note 2 on T-Mo's network?
