Loss of Data Roaming - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Anyone experience this? I cannot get the epic touch to connect to data on roaming. I have never rooted and I do have data roaming enabled.

in roaming settings remove the check marks from voice and data and you have to select data first.

If data roaming is already checked to yes then turn it off then back on. Phone will ask you if you are sure then hit yes.

I have never roamed. But is data roaming free? I in checked the box just in case because I wasn't sure.

Yes data roaming is free with the unlimited plan. Im not sure with the cheaper plans.

What does Roaming Guard do?Should everything be checked?Im just confused between Roaming Settings and Roaming Guard...Thanks

I believe with roaming guard it will ask you first if you want to roam when it is about to happen and you have to click okay. Without the guard, you will just roam without your device asking if it is okay every time.

samsung phones don't roam on the PCS band (1900mhz)
so if data is being broadcast on that band, you aint picking it up
but I have no issues roaming data on 800mhz

Noob warning... Is there an app or widget which shows what frequency I'm currently using? I've tried opensignal maps & net monitor, but nothing shows frequency, ie 1900 or 800mhz, etc. yet I see people commenting about what frequency they are using. How can I find out?

It's called band class under either ##data# or ##debug# menu, don't remember which.
Bandclass of 0 is the cellular band
Bandclass of 1 is pcs

.12Mb/sec roaming

Description says it all. When I roam onto Verizons towers I only get. 12Mb/sec which is almost no internet at all. Is there a way to fix this? I know the signle from my tower would give me 2.5-3Mb/sec on my evo just a few weeks ago. Ideas guys? Oh i use Roam Controle to switch over to Verizon if that makes a difference
yeah well the best Sprint 3G I can get in my neighborhood is about .25 Mbps. And it's true for many parts of Manhattan, you can't crack .5 Mbps.
I thought verizon dramatically throttles it for roaming.

I dont use 3g much in Manhattan. But where I live(in queens) and where I work and go to school (midtown) I have an awesome 4g signal. When I'm inside, I average anywhere from 6-9mbps and when I'm outside I get about 9-11mbps

Damn you 4g'ers lol. Kauai doesn't have 4g yet
It all has to do with the 3g radio in the phone...It sucks...I'm in Dallas TX and I get speeds so low I can't load a web site through opera mini. Any other phone I owned Evo4g and 3d where not that slow at all. 4g is not strong enough to keep a signal while moving/driving so I dont use it much.

Actually, it has all to do with your prl...unless you're on an old or select business prl, almost all current prls only allow 1xrtt data on roaming. So the speeds you are seeing are actually normal 1x speeds
Its confusing though, since our phones seem to be lacking the 1x icon

Actually in many areas, the PRL entry for Verizon is defined to search for Verizon 1x signal while also searching for Sprint EV signal. So you could actually be roaming on Verizon for voice, have the EV/3G indicator, but still be using Sprint for EV/3G data.
This can lead to even more confusion.

LOL I normally get about .20mbps on Sprint's terrible 3G network, and still no 4G here in Phoenix.
You have to admit Sprints 3G network is a joke. I was sitting at dinner earlier right next to the tower and I was barely breaking 1mbps.

My Moment (August, anyway) was able to roam on 3G in northern Wisconsin. Of course, I believe that that part of AllTel went to Cellular One, not Verizon. That's probably the difference.
In fact, I often got better data speeds in the middle of the forest up north than I do at home in Milwaukee. I usually got 150-200kBs (bytes, not bits) whereas at home, I get 15-20kBs.

speed heavily depends on time and location
can be anywhere from 500kbs-1.5mbs but as slow as 200 if the tower is super hogged.

Damn I would kill for those speeds. In midtown manhattan and on 4G I can only get around 5mbps download (standing next to a window) and 350kbps download.
I can't even get 4G signal in my house downtown. I get only 1 or 2 bars for 3G unless I am standing next to a window.
I need to test the speed of the 3G next time I roam.
this is fps test. hope the pic works this time
From what I understand Verizon does not support 3G roaming with Sprint phones you will only get 1x service. 3G roaming was a deal with Alltel, who got bought out by Verizon and ATT. You are going to get crappy speeds if you are roaming on Verizon.

A must have app that's no longer in the market.

Even if we use custom PRL like 11115? I had 1.70 installed, just updated/downgraded to this one. Good thing for Titanium BackUp!

You are incorrect.
Roam Control does not decide whether you roam 1x or 3g. Your roaming data speed is governed by your PRL and/or the roaming agreements Sprint has with other carriers.
For example, in northern Wisconsin, Sprint has a full 3G roaming agreement with Alltel which was maintained because Verizon was forced to divest those towers to Cellcom. This is available to all Sprint customers. In southern Wisconsin, you are able to get a "corporate" PRL (like 11115), which enables 3g roaming.
In other states, where roaming is on Verizon, Sprint forces 1x roaming, and the only way around it is to use a hacked Verizon PRL.
Roam Control is a fantastic program that works perfectly for me, but I'm fortunate to be in a valid 3G roaming zone!

I've never heard of anyone roaming naturally (when sprint signal is nonexistent) on anything higher than 1x and without a hacked verizon prl. I only use Roam Control at work, where Sprint signal is so low, the radio drains the battery 10 times faster than normal. And it works great.
But sure, here.
I'll rephrase:
Unless you are already able to roam on 3G w/o Roam Control, Roam Control will let roam at 1x only. It is not a substitute for using a hacked/business PRL which allows 3G roaming.
nvm..........

If your Sprint signal is low and this drains your battery (which is almost always the case), you have a choice to roam on a different network, whose signal is usually much stronger. You lose the bandwidth (from 3g to 1x - 2.5mbps to 128kbps), but you will improve the battery life (compared to losing something like 10% battery an hour in idle).
I usually only lose about 1% battery per hour with 3+ Sprint bars of signal. But at work, my signal is 0-1 bars, and the battery loss is close to 10% per hour.
By using Roam Control and setting it to roam only, I can have normal battery drain - 1% an hour.
I personally have never got this dang thing to work. When I select Roam Only, it just chills on Sprint's network still. I can be roaming (just by chance), then try 'Sprint Only' and nothing... stays in roaming.
I would love it if this worked though because I am on PRL 11115 and should be able to get 3G + I get better VZ signal in my apt. anyways.
Anyone have suggestions on what I may be doing wrong? I select Samsung in the options.

I am on Calk's 2.8, EL26 modem I get nothing. Does it automatically switch for you pretty quick? God, my Sprint signal blows balls here. Plus, when I do get my phone to roam, i get almost full bars and fast vzw 3g speeds. So, I know the PRL and all allows it, but missing something here.

All I can say is when I was running the stock PRL that came with the phone, I indeed had 3G roaming in northern Wisconsin (although it was rev A, not rev 0) and was fast enough to comfortably use Netflix.

I've noticed on Calk's ROMs that after selecting a new state (automatic to Roam Only, or Roam Only to Automatic), about half the time the change won't take until I reboot the phone. Usually, when this happens, I'll get force closes for the phone process.
Try rebooting after changing the state and see if that works for you.

Calk's 2.7 EL26. Radio responds instantly (LOS ==> VZW) and 3G is indicated within 8 seconds usually. I have seen information in other threads about Samsung not roaming in 3G due to a lack of PCS band. However if it is not switching at all that probably does not apply.

Why won't phone choose strongest signal?

I have flashed several roms, radios, and kernels to this phone and none of them will roam. Not even stock out of the box. I also have a photon and I can be in a location with little to no sprint service and the photon will roam on cdma with full bars but the epic touch wont leave sprint to roam. Db never makes it above -100. I don't even know where to begin. I have tried forcing roam, but nothing. I have went through all the settings for network and mobile data/voice every option I could think of and the phone is still stuck on sprint

For me whenever roaming control is on, it never really activates roaming and if it does the signal still is bad when the person next to me on verizon and or tmobile has all 5 bars.. So either roam control doesnt turn on fully or it doesnt want to connect to better outside network towers ??
roam control doesn't work in all areas with Sammy phones. Frequency for roaming is different. Roam control site explains it better than me.

Btw roam control dies work. The problem is the prl. If you are using a normal pro it will only roam on 1x. You need a business prl like from korey's thread.

Yep, that is the problem that I see most people having. They download a pirated copy of the app and wonder why its not working. The developer has implemented something to disable the roaming function with pirated versions. To use Roam Control to its full potential, either buy the app or go on a hunt for version 1.4.

Are you sure that you are actually switching over to roaming? Do you see a small triangle next to the signal bars.
First off, your never going to roam on T-mobile since they're GSM.
Samsung phones have a "bug" where they cannot roam on the cellular band; they will only roam on the PCS band. Your friend on Verizon is probably connected to a strong cellular band signal and when you force roam your connecting to a crappy PCS signal.
I have a paid version of the app. On my photon which is a sprint phone will roam perfect. Tested the app on that phone and it made no difference, the phone already roams like its supposed to. Same house the epic touch won't leave sprints network. I can barely hold one bar with every roam setting in thx phone turned on. I installed roam control again from the market onto this phone and even the app can't get it to roam. Still 3G at one or no bars on sprint network. Also what are these prls I keep reading about on all these roms. I know I could search the forums and find an explanation on what they are how to change and whatnot but are these codes that important? And would that effect the phones roaming and signal strength? Because even with the photon not roaming and using sprints network I can hold a steady 2 or more bars but with a sucky data speed

[Q] Roaming issues

My girlfriend and I have the exact same Epic Touch purchased at the same time from Amazon. Since we began our contract, When we travel to the Eastern suburbs her phone switches to roaming (data) until we travel West back towards Sacramento. Mine has no issues whatsoever.
I have checked the service maps on Sprint.com and they indicate strong 3G service for voice and data in the area that her phone switches to roaming.
Anyone have any similar experiences?
assuming that both phones have updated prl's, its possible that one phone may have roaming guard on while the other doesn't. Sounds like the roaming phone may be hitting a dead zone and staying on stronger roaming signal.

Does turning off roaming affect just data, Voice or both?

Is it Possible to Connect to Other Carrier's Data Networks?

I'm on a rooted T-Mobile phone running CM10.1 nightlies and have T-Mobile as my carrier. I go to the Catskills a lot, and, except when I'm in a "big" town, I'm on Edge (literally and figuratively). I'm told that AT&T and Verizon have better infrastructure up there than does T-Mobile.
I tried enabling national data roaming and selecting LTE/GSM/WCDMA under network mode settings, but then when I search for network operators it takes forever and doesn't find anything.
What do I need to do to be able to connect to the other carriers' networks, or is it even possible?
Thanks for any advice.
I almost sure that your account needs to have roaming data enabled and carriers to have roaming agreement. I remember during storm Sandy Tmo and Att shared towers for a while and phone automatically connected to stronger provider. This is not phone issue. Other providers not allowing you on theirs networks.

In short. No. You can't. There are some areas where we can roam on att but they're limited ans you only get 50 megs of domestic roaming data.

Thanks very much for your responses. I guess I'll look into getting another phone on one of those other carriers. Maybe prepaid for only when I go up there. Or maybe just a prepaid sim, if that even exists. I never researched it.
Thursday my Note 2 popped onto AT&T randomly. I just happened to be looking at my signal widget and it showed at&t, I was in a decent tmo location as well but on wifi. Wierd.

The last time it happened to me, Calls worked just fine. I got to test data since I blew through the roaming limi.
But this was last year when I had the One S. It even had 4G/HSPA on AT&T. Except the roaming limit was so low I blew through it in a few minutes.
I should also mention this happened to me when I was driving through/in Colorado/Arizona
