Why won't phone choose strongest signal? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I have flashed several roms, radios, and kernels to this phone and none of them will roam. Not even stock out of the box. I also have a photon and I can be in a location with little to no sprint service and the photon will roam on cdma with full bars but the epic touch wont leave sprint to roam. Db never makes it above -100. I don't even know where to begin. I have tried forcing roam, but nothing. I have went through all the settings for network and mobile data/voice every option I could think of and the phone is still stuck on sprint

I agree.. Ive also tried the same.. Roam control is a joke to me ..

So you both have attempted to use Roam Control but to no avail. What is it exactly about Roam Control that isn't working for you two?

For me whenever roaming control is on, it never really activates roaming and if it does the signal still is bad when the person next to me on verizon and or tmobile has all 5 bars.. So either roam control doesnt turn on fully or it doesnt want to connect to better outside network towers ??

roam control doesn't work in all areas with Sammy phones. Frequency for roaming is different. Roam control site explains it better than me.

Btw roam control dies work. The problem is the prl. If you are using a normal pro it will only roam on 1x. You need a business prl like from korey's thread.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk

Also, Sprint prl's will use VZW for roaming as a last resort.
Download Net Monitor and check to see who you are actually roaming on.
What PRL and what location are you at?

Yep, that is the problem that I see most people having. They download a pirated copy of the app and wonder why its not working. The developer has implemented something to disable the roaming function with pirated versions. To use Roam Control to its full potential, either buy the app or go on a hunt for version 1.4.

I have the same problem.....p***es Me off,but im trying different modems, hopefully I get better signal or I might just try flashing my phone to boost or cellcom

Are you sure that you are actually switching over to roaming? Do you see a small triangle next to the signal bars.

First off, your never going to roam on T-mobile since they're GSM.
Samsung phones have a "bug" where they cannot roam on the cellular band; they will only roam on the PCS band. Your friend on Verizon is probably connected to a strong cellular band signal and when you force roam your connecting to a crappy PCS signal.

I have a paid version of the app. On my photon which is a sprint phone will roam perfect. Tested the app on that phone and it made no difference, the phone already roams like its supposed to. Same house the epic touch won't leave sprints network. I can barely hold one bar with every roam setting in thx phone turned on. I installed roam control again from the market onto this phone and even the app can't get it to roam. Still 3G at one or no bars on sprint network. Also what are these prls I keep reading about on all these roms. I know I could search the forums and find an explanation on what they are how to change and whatnot but are these codes that important? And would that effect the phones roaming and signal strength? Because even with the photon not roaming and using sprints network I can hold a steady 2 or more bars but with a sucky data speed

I'm in the same boat when in a dead zone it's a crap shoot whether the phone will roam or not

No it just locks your phone to regular 1x roaming.
I also noticed when i used this, that if i do a whatismyip i am actually still on sprint
Even if we use custom PRL like 11115? I had 1.70 installed, just updated/downgraded to this one. Good thing for Titanium BackUp!
EDIT...on the 11115 PRL you can still roam 3G. 11115 PRL is a Sprint PRL for Business lines that allow roaming on 3G.

You are incorrect.
Roam Control does not decide whether you roam 1x or 3g. Your roaming data speed is governed by your PRL and/or the roaming agreements Sprint has with other carriers.
For example, in northern Wisconsin, Sprint has a full 3G roaming agreement with Alltel which was maintained because Verizon was forced to divest those towers to Cellcom. This is available to all Sprint customers. In southern Wisconsin, you are able to get a "corporate" PRL (like 11115), which enables 3g roaming.
In other states, where roaming is on Verizon, Sprint forces 1x roaming, and the only way around it is to use a hacked Verizon PRL.
Roam Control is a fantastic program that works perfectly for me, but I'm fortunate to be in a valid 3G roaming zone!

I've never heard of anyone roaming naturally (when sprint signal is nonexistent) on anything higher than 1x and without a hacked verizon prl. I only use Roam Control at work, where Sprint signal is so low, the radio drains the battery 10 times faster than normal. And it works great.
But sure, here.
I'll rephrase:
Unless you are already able to roam on 3G w/o Roam Control, Roam Control will let roam at 1x only. It is not a substitute for using a hacked/business PRL which allows 3G roaming.
nvm..........

Ok, I have poor signal at one of my workplaces and am interested in this program. Do you set it on "Roam only" when you get to work? And what's the difference between "Automatic" mode on Roam Control vs. just letting your phone decide whether it will roam or not?

on automatic you will stay on sprint even registering zero bars but having "1/2" bars worth of sprint... even if you have 5 on VZ other. roam only is exactly what it says, and im not sure theres anywhere there would be an advantage to sprint only... a joke maybe? If your Sprint signal is low and this drains your battery (which is almost always the case), you have a choice to roam on a different network, whose signal is usually much stronger. You lose the bandwidth (from 3g to 1x - 2.5mbps to 128kbps), but you will improve the battery life (compared to losing something like 10% battery an hour in idle).
I usually only lose about 1% battery per hour with 3+ Sprint bars of signal. But at work, my signal is 0-1 bars, and the battery loss is close to 10% per hour.
By using Roam Control and setting it to roam only, I can have normal battery drain - 1% an hour.
I personally have never got this dang thing to work. When I select Roam Only, it just chills on Sprint's network still. I can be roaming (just by chance), then try 'Sprint Only' and nothing... stays in roaming.
I would love it if this worked though because I am on PRL 11115 and should be able to get 3G + I get better VZ signal in my apt. anyways.
Anyone have suggestions on what I may be doing wrong? I select Samsung in the options.

Purchased the new version (updated server) off his website and with PRL 11115 this works like a charm with 3G roaming. Works great where the network is so saturated it is unusable with speeds on VZW ~1000kbps.

I am on Calk's 2.8, EL26 modem I get nothing. Does it automatically switch for you pretty quick? God, my Sprint signal blows balls here. Plus, when I do get my phone to roam, i get almost full bars and fast vzw 3g speeds. So, I know the PRL and all allows it, but missing something here.

All I can say is when I was running the stock PRL that came with the phone, I indeed had 3G roaming in northern Wisconsin (although it was rev A, not rev 0) and was fast enough to comfortably use Netflix.

I've noticed on Calk's ROMs that after selecting a new state (automatic to Roam Only, or Roam Only to Automatic), about half the time the change won't take until I reboot the phone. Usually, when this happens, I'll get force closes for the phone process.
Try rebooting after changing the state and see if that works for you.

Calk's 2.7 EL26. Radio responds instantly (LOS ==> VZW) and 3G is indicated within 8 seconds usually. I have seen information in other threads about Samsung not roaming in 3G due to a lack of PCS band. However if it is not switching at all that probably does not apply.

Force roaming

I have asked this several times and the thread either moves too fast for anyone to notice my question or avoids it all together.
Without using the app "roam control" is there another way to force roaming in this device?? It finally roamed the other night on the tower just a few hundred yards away from the house for about an hour with full service and 3G at amazing speeds. It was a cricket tower. I have the prl 11115 but have yet to connect to the tower sense or before that hour. Cm9 on other devices including the photon that I have has built in force roam. I am on stock now for the epic with every roam setting set and before that hour I thought it was impossible for this phone to roam that tower. Now that I know its possible I want to be able to connect to it every time I'm home. What can I do? I can't buy the roam control app because it requires a PayPal account and mine is locked.

Cricket is actually pretty big here. I had no idea they had their own tower. Figured they shared cdma towers considering cricket is just a prepaid service here. But next time I'm able to connect to it I'll screenshot it. Also to the other guy that directed me to the prl thread. I read that thread from start to finish and did everything it asked and I am still having the issue. Can someone verify if cm9 for the e4gt has force roam or not? Its an internal feature not an app. It was built in to cm9 for the photon, mytouch 4G, evo, and atrix. I guess I could flash to verify for myself but I don't have access to the epic as a daily phone. Its being used by my brother atm who lives a few hours away. I am only able to go there once a month so testing is limited.

Which PRL are you on? If you are trying to force roaming, use one of the hacked PRL files at the bottom (00001 or 01337). "Your phone won't say its roaming but it is."
Of course, the carrier has to be listed in the file to roam.

Any downside to using old PRL's?

I'm not sure if everything on this phone works the same as my old s2, but it doesnt seem to. I fly to the same city 5 days/week, and it is outside of sprint service. On my s2 i just ran the 60675 prl which got me phenomenal speeds and no roaming indicated (using old alltel towers). I don't get the same speeds now with my s3, maybe 1/3-1/2 if I'm lucky. Using 25005 yields me no data coverage, 12124 and 60675 seem similar but 60675 is marginally better. Is there any downside to using it? I can swap back and forth if needed for my home area
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
The only thing to be concerned about is getting in trouble for using too much roaming data. Using an old PRL doesn't change anything other than possibly telling your phone to look for service on frequencies that may have changed. I would try to find the 00002 PRL for a relatively recent Verizon/Alltel only PRL.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
I recommend PRL 11119. You can see my guide on changing PRLs if you need instructions or download links for PRLs.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
been using 60675 for the last year in this area, i don't actually use that much roaming data, i use wifi whenever possible, but if i'm in the car or away i need to have 3g access (navigation primarily). 60675 makes my phone think I am still in a home area which allows profile updates if i need to (especially if i am changing roms)
i used the Anycut method and it works great to change the PRL's but it is a lot of work trying to find them.
The downside would be that as Sprint makes new roaming agreements, your phone won't be set up to use the towers added by those agreements. It might also try to roam onto towers Sprint no longer has agreements to roam to, so you may end up with dropped calls. PRL lists won't affect your non-roaming coverage at all.
Im using 111115 corporate prl, its working good. I get dropped calls on anything else.
12124 seems to be working ok now

Any way to force LTE only on Samsung Galaxy S III i747?

Hi Guys,
I have LTE coverage where I am, but phone keeps going to 4G.
Is there any way to force it so it stays on LTE?
I have tried the following app but no luck. Once I select the LTE Only mode it switches to WCDMA Preferred mode some how.
LTE OnOFF - HTC Thunderbolt, https://play.google.com/store/search?q=lte+on+off
Any way, any idea any one??
Thanks
If it keeps dropping back to 4G then the LTE service probably isn't strong enough where you are. You can't just force it on either. That's like forcing any service at all in the middle of the ocean.

Previous poster is right.
But u can play around. Reboot to recovery, wipe cache, reboot. Flash different ROMs, usually one Stock based, another AOKP - I believe modems are vastly different there.
The only way to fix this is make a new APN there's a post on skyrocket fourms that shows you how

I have done forcing on other devices such as Galaxy Nexus, currently using Sierra 754S that has feature where you can force it to stay on LTE, and it stays put.. Only problem it gets WICKED HOT if I pump a lot of data
Assuming you subscribed with your provider for LTE-service, then definitely it's because your LTE coverage is not great.
If you've never seen your phone connect to LTE before, I suggest you contact your provider and make sure you are on their LTE-network.
LTE-device doesn't automatically mean you're getting LTE service. I've seen people make that incorrect assumption.
Well, all you really need is LTE Sim card for AT&T, it works awesome ... as I said it works great with Sierra 754S air card.
So any device that has LTE capability it works perfect with that.

No voice coverage on Lte so the phone still needs hspa to make and Recieve calls and text messages. Until all the voice over Lte and hand off standards are in place Lte is a data only feature.
On a data stick it makes sense to allow an Lte only mode but on a phone it would not be a good idea.

Phone wont connect to 3g when set to CDMA\LTE\EVDO mode

I have an interesting issue. My wife and I both have Note II's. I have a grey one, she has a white one. Both are on the latest Stock Rom and rooted, same kernel and modem revisions. Both phones on the dreaded 2000 PRL (Havent got around to flashing another one because we have an Airave 2.5)
My phone will not connect to 3g at all when I have LTE enabled. The other phone connects to 3G just fine with LTE enabled.
I have another friend that only sporadically connects to 3g with LTE enabled. If I set the phones that wont stay connected to 3G to CDMA mode everything is fine.
Any ideas?
Try automatic?

Cdma only or global
I was reading some other sites and threads after I encountered a problem almost just like this because I had switched my signal type while on AOSP.
I discovered that because our phone are global they have different connection setting and in short when you switch to either global mode or CDMA only, and try to go back to lte evdo the phone will roam constantly and will not be able to reconnect to lte. So while I was trying to fix my LTE I managed to force my LTE on but I wasnt getting any cdma or evdo. finally I got everything back to normal by flashing a back to stock rom and doing a hands free activation.
I'm also have an overwhelming time with 3g. I have no lte in my area but have tried both CDMA only and CDMA/let settings. My 3g is on and off within 1 minute intervals or hours at a time. I pretty much have no data connection 95% of the day, until I get home from work and can hit WiFi.
I'm just stock rooted on MC2 and also on prl 2000.
I've been on the phone with sprint for days trying to figure this out or get them to waive my ETF. I refuse to keep paying for service when I am not getting any. It's bad enough they don't have 4G much less LTE here, but I can't continue to do these sub par dialup speeds to no speeds.
Any other tips to try would be greatly appreciated. As sprint says everything is fine in my area...
Go figure.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah, same problem here. Somehow after rooting the phone i completely lost 4G LTE connectivity. Now everywhere i go it's only on 3G or EvDo Rev-8 which sucks. I think the only way of fixing toys issue is to Unroot and go back to stock ROM.
After doing a lot of research on the matter that is the only solution right now to our 4G LTE catastrophe.
