Is it Possible to Connect to Other Carrier's Data Networks? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

I'm on a rooted T-Mobile phone running CM10.1 nightlies and have T-Mobile as my carrier. I go to the Catskills a lot, and, except when I'm in a "big" town, I'm on Edge (literally and figuratively). I'm told that AT&T and Verizon have better infrastructure up there than does T-Mobile.
I tried enabling national data roaming and selecting LTE/GSM/WCDMA under network mode settings, but then when I search for network operators it takes forever and doesn't find anything.
What do I need to do to be able to connect to the other carriers' networks, or is it even possible?
Thanks for any advice.

I almost sure that your account needs to have roaming data enabled and carriers to have roaming agreement. I remember during storm Sandy Tmo and Att shared towers for a while and phone automatically connected to stronger provider. This is not phone issue. Other providers not allowing you on theirs networks.

In short. No. You can't. There are some areas where we can roam on att but they're limited ans you only get 50 megs of domestic roaming data.

Thanks very much for your responses. I guess I'll look into getting another phone on one of those other carriers. Maybe prepaid for only when I go up there. Or maybe just a prepaid sim, if that even exists. I never researched it.

Thursday my Note 2 popped onto AT&T randomly. I just happened to be looking at my signal widget and it showed at&t, I was in a decent tmo location as well but on wifi. Wierd.

The last time it happened to me, Calls worked just fine. I got to test data since I blew through the roaming limi.
But this was last year when I had the One S. It even had 4G/HSPA on AT&T. Except the roaming limit was so low I blew through it in a few minutes.
I should also mention this happened to me when I was driving through/in Colorado/Arizona

Straight talk $45 unlimited plan

Does anyone have this plan? Im wondering if and when they throttle data, i called st but can't get a straight answer. Right now i get throttled after 5gb, if straight talk gives you at least 5gigs of full speed data it would be well worth switching for me. Just seems too good to be true.

They don't, common wisdom is that it's more like 2g/mo and 100m/day before ST throttles, but you won't get an answer out of them, ever.

You should look at the prepaid thread in my sig. It details all of the plans and there are lots of testimonials of people using them.
Common wisdom is that the Straight Talk plan caps at 2gb per month (theres no way they could do 5gb data at the $45 price point).
If you want more data you're either going to have to go with the $60 Simple Mobile plan, which gives 5gb+, or the T-Mobile Prepaid plans, 2 of which offer 5gb (then throttle).

so you are sure the simple mobile plan gives 5gb before throttling? Cannot find any definite number on their website just like straight talk. On tmobile/att/cincinnati bell websites it tells you the amount of data used where you will be throttled. At least they are up front about it.

It's not published, but just crowd-sourced that they offer 5GB of data. Many MVNOs choose not to publish whether or not they throttle/cap or at what point.
So after 5gb are you throttled or are there overage fees? Im assuming throttled since it's called unlimited. And simple mobile uses tmobiles network, correct?

My question for anyone using the gnex and ST is, does the phone use T-Mobiles network or atts? I read you can use either a T-Mobile or att phone and was wondering since the gnex is pentaband if you could potentially bounce from one network to the other based on which one had better signal? Thanks in advance guys.

You choose when you start the service whether you're going to get an AT&T SIM or a T-Mobile SIM (they can pick for you based on your zip code, but you can choose manually). You can't bounce back and forth, because the SIM is only provisioned for AT&T towers or T-Mobile towers. There's no roaming between the two.
When you order, its easy to tell. In the cart it will say "AT&T compatible SIM card" or "T-Mobile compatible SIM card".

straight talk is great as long as nothing goes wrong (which luckily is my case)
faster data speed than simple mobile and very good coverage
however their customer service is non-existent
calling them is a waste of time
try their facebook page if you really wanna have something done
much more responsive (they probably won't fix your problem immediately but at least they are responding)

This is true of prepaid carriers. You save money but get no service. I call CS maybe once a year, so I think that's worth saving $40 a month on service.
Has anyone on straight talk At&t sim tried doing a voice call or video call using Google Talk? when I try I get a message saying I need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network. Anyone else getting this?

I am now using my Galaxy Nexus with Straight Talk on the TMO ST SIM card. Overall its great. One thing I've noticed though are the ping times. On ST I can never get a ping better than 300ms using the speedtest.net app. Also several times when I've woken my phone from idle, I notice it says its not in sync with Google services...the bars are grey and not blue. It usually goes blue again within 30 seconds saying it synced. I think it may be related to the ping issue, as I think ST data goes through a proxy before going out over the TMO network to destination. The data speeds themselves seem the same as they were when I was on Tmobile, but I seem to recall being able to get around 100ms pings or less in the same locations when I was on Tmobile.

Any way to force LTE only on Samsung Galaxy S III i747?

Hi Guys,
I have LTE coverage where I am, but phone keeps going to 4G.
Is there any way to force it so it stays on LTE?
I have tried the following app but no luck. Once I select the LTE Only mode it switches to WCDMA Preferred mode some how.
LTE OnOFF - HTC Thunderbolt, https://play.google.com/store/search?q=lte+on+off
Any way, any idea any one??
Thanks
If it keeps dropping back to 4G then the LTE service probably isn't strong enough where you are. You can't just force it on either. That's like forcing any service at all in the middle of the ocean.

Previous poster is right.
But u can play around. Reboot to recovery, wipe cache, reboot. Flash different ROMs, usually one Stock based, another AOKP - I believe modems are vastly different there.
The only way to fix this is make a new APN there's a post on skyrocket fourms that shows you how

I have done forcing on other devices such as Galaxy Nexus, currently using Sierra 754S that has feature where you can force it to stay on LTE, and it stays put.. Only problem it gets WICKED HOT if I pump a lot of data
Assuming you subscribed with your provider for LTE-service, then definitely it's because your LTE coverage is not great.
If you've never seen your phone connect to LTE before, I suggest you contact your provider and make sure you are on their LTE-network.
LTE-device doesn't automatically mean you're getting LTE service. I've seen people make that incorrect assumption.
Well, all you really need is LTE Sim card for AT&T, it works awesome ... as I said it works great with Sierra 754S air card.
So any device that has LTE capability it works perfect with that.

No voice coverage on Lte so the phone still needs hspa to make and Recieve calls and text messages. Until all the voice over Lte and hand off standards are in place Lte is a data only feature.
On a data stick it makes sense to allow an Lte only mode but on a phone it would not be a good idea.

At&t hspa+/vpn question

So I recently upgraded to s3 from my captivate and the internet is significantly slower than when I was on my captivate . I tried flashing all the available modems and the VPN settings I can find on here and my down was 1.4mbs and .160mbs up (was 3-5mb down and 1.1 up on my captivate) I tried dialing *#2263# but it doesn't let me open up the menu to check the bands to see if hsupa is enabled .
BTW I don't have the lte sim I cut my old sim down. They said if I upgrade my sim they will remove my unlimited data . But I don't see why it would matter since this is just a hspa + issue and I don't have lte here yet anyways. And I'm on lh1 modem currently .
So any one have any either ideas to fix this issue?

Yup corporate. My rep told me they don't know how I'm still on this plan because they got rid of unlimited for awhile now. The account shows that my captivate was using dumb phone internet lol. So he said if I change the sim card number they wouldn't be able to select the same plan through his portal. I don't wanna pay an extra 20$ for only 4gb on Lte when I can keep the unlimited for less with hspa. So I'm trying to work my way around it.

Bell i317 LTE APN help?

I just recently bought a locked Rogers Galaxy Note II i317M and unlocked it using cellunlocker(dot)net; however, I am not getting a LTE signal on Bell for some reason — it's always just "4G".
I talked to a rep and he said that it should work since im in a LTE covered area. He also said that he can't help me further since I didn't buy the phone from Bell .
Anyone know what's happening here? Did the unlocking mess it up? Is that even possible?
I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks.

What are your APN settings?
Bell does not have a different apn for lte and hspa. After flashing some at&t roms, I am not getting lte at all. But the stock room is okay .
I'm on Rogers and couldn't get on LTE. It turned out to be my old SIM. Rogers replaced it and voila, LTE. Not sure if Bell has a similar issue with older SIMs or not, but maybe it's worth a try.

lte not working for me
hi guys i recently flashed miui for my note 2 and noticed im only getting 3g, my APN settings look the same and ive also played around with them but always end up with either no internet or only 3g. any suggestions?
As a canadian multi-carrier cell phone salesman you do need a data plan, sim, and phone all to be lte enabled for lte service. If you are on a plan roughly two years or older you most likely did not get upgraded to lte data. This sounds like your issue here, and you would have to go talk to your corporate to have the plan changed over. I'm not sure if its a personal under a corporate (this case changing should be easy) or a giant bucket plan, in which case good luck.
Rogers is the only canadian carrier to have an lte APN.
and lastly your bell micro sim should clearly be labeled LTE, and for others FYI Telus sim cards should be V31, and rogers I believe its B010 if memory serves me right.
On the note 2 lte is already a default setting if already enabled.
well i guess then miui for the note 2 is not an lte rom because ive checked and rechecked my apn settings, and i have all the above that u mentioned, the stock rom (4.1.1) had lte but when i flashed miui all im getting is 3g.
apn settings all blank i317m
I did something in odin.
I am on 4.3 official firmware but I have no mobile data. I checked my apn settings and virtually all settings are blank. Not set.
Help please
Thanks

When people are in buildings that cell signals can't penetrate, they quickly become jealous of wi-fi calling. Having this additional capability is simply awesome sauce when you need it.

It is one of the best features of the phone IMO. In many areas (like mine), T-Mo is actually worse than it was 10 years ago (when they were borrowing AT&T networks), with only 3G/4G in some spots and 90% Edge. I think it's great that they included something like that to keep customers sorta happy. I was afraid the voice would be terrible on it but it isnt. I wish other carriers had something like that.
Do you know if there's a way to enable Wi-Fi calling with moderate Wi-Fi connection? My device takes literally 10 minutes because my WiFi connection fluctuates from full bars to like three so it never connects.
WiFi call is the main reason I stay with T-Mobile/stock ROM. Especially I travel overseas a lot.
