T Mobile WIFI calling..how big is for you? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

So as much as I love my note2 I want to talk about something not unique to it..wifi calling
When I switched to the note2 I also switched to t mobile from sprint..I wanted an gsm note2 I could unlocked for international travel to use in country sims so tmobile was the choice.
But the thing is when I go overseas im almost always in a hotel with wifi..and tmobile wifi calling has been a God sent. .ive never even had to swap out for local sim..calling, texting, back home all over wifi at local us rates..how great is that..it is my favorite feature..yet almost no other carrier has anything like it.. surprising

Not important for me at all
CARBON NIGHTLY | CABIN FEVER WHISKY

I'd use the crap out of it if it didn't use my minutes
I'm sure it's useful for those people who don't get a good signal at home, which isn't me, so it's pretty useless and unimportant.

I use it all the time.

When people are in buildings that cell signals can't penetrate, they quickly become jealous of wi-fi calling. Having this additional capability is simply awesome sauce when you need it.

I thought it would charge you for roaming rates, wouldnt it?
Thanks,

It is the most important thing. Without it I wouldn't be able to use my phone 75% of the places I go. Can't afford Verizon anymore hence my T-Mobile venture. Once again...thank goodness for WiFi calling.

This is an addon with some biz plans. Critical for my company as alot my techs are in datacenters which have cell blocking tech, the buildings are just to thick, or some with heavy RF interference etc for any signal to get through. Even more when my guys are on the road. Beyond the lie that vzw or att say is everywhere, my guys can always pull off road at a pukeUds and call in.

It is one of the best features of the phone IMO. In many areas (like mine), T-Mo is actually worse than it was 10 years ago (when they were borrowing AT&T networks), with only 3G/4G in some spots and 90% Edge. I think it's great that they included something like that to keep customers sorta happy. I was afraid the voice would be terrible on it but it isnt. I wish other carriers had something like that.

Do you know if there's a way to enable Wi-Fi calling with moderate Wi-Fi connection? My device takes literally 10 minutes because my WiFi connection fluctuates from full bars to like three so it never connects.

WiFi call is the main reason I stay with T-Mobile/stock ROM. Especially I travel overseas a lot.

my Defy is the same way - crappy data service from tmobile
Its gotta be a hardware or software issue because like I said, I have tmo as well and have no issue with data right next to her.

I have a Defy, not rooted, with the current update and have no data issues. However, a really freaky thing occurred last weekend. I was LAX running on a Hotspot, getting wifi but no wifi calling. Arrived in SF, Hotspot, same issue. Then, out in the real world took two hours for the phone to find 3G. Called T-Mo and they had me install a uicc sim and now runs like an ace (or, as when it was new). You might try the sim upgrade.
I'm sure its a mix of software and hardware... I don't know if or when we will see a Radio updatefor the defy... But most of all its T-mobiles celluar tower service, they are the worst of the worst for a national provider. At&T is a much better GSM provider, they just got bad press with that Sh!t I-Phone.
If I could afford Verizon I would go with Cdma tech, its better then the 30 year old GSM tech

[Q] Wifi Calling GPS??

Every time I turn on WiFi and it initiates WiFi Calling, I notice that the GPS signal comes on for about 5-10seconds. Why would it pull my GPS location when starting WiFi calling?
Is this for 911 calling (hopefully), or is this to prevent you from using WiFi calling internationally to make free calls back home to the US?
Probably to bill international callers

That is what I am worried about. I am actually headed to Canada tomorrow and thinking I want to try it from a Tim Hortons or something but I am a little bit chicken haha.
It doesn't seem fair that they would do that... It doesn't matter/cost anything to them where I am connecting over WiFi from as long as I am not connecting via a tower.

ip is assigned by t-mobile, so it wouldn't necessarily very by location.
while yes, they could look it up, that would use their resources, and they would much rather use your battery and abuse your privacy.

Tmobile sucks

T-Mobile is really spotty in some states thought they had better coverage
Could be a tower issue...plus your complaining about cancelling your service over the fact you get edge...just so you know T-Mobile is in the works right now restructuring there network/towers...plus integrating LTE too...dont give up!

Stupid question but did you try powering down, pull the battery, wait about 5 minutes and reboot?
Also, are you on the latest radio?

Well the technology you're 'on' isn't outdated and if the tmobile rep says that shouldn't be the case probably means that there's some other issue. And do you usually have bad service? I probably wouldn't change service since it's poor in an area your visiting temporarily... If it's not bad service where you usually live... And were you asking for advice or did you just want to vent to everyone?

That is quite ironic, because when I was visiting family in Philly/DE/NJ I was getting excellent 4G around 10GB download speeds and great voice coverage.

I got only EDGE while visiting my dad. My reaction was to be stoked because I expected only GPRS or nothing at all. It's not like I'm there very often - it doesn't really matter. Even if he lived a few miles over in the "major city" nearby, it's not like I'm there for a significant portion of my life. That'd be like cancelling my service if it was crap when I was visiting my grandparents in Massachusetts - I'm there.. what, a week a year ? Whoopee. Unless you're in college and visiting this family for months at a time... what's the big deal ?
And paying $100/mo on T-Mobile ? Why ? How ? I went with T-Mobile because I DIDN'T want that kind of ridiculous bill - and because they specifically offer plans that aren't that high.
They have an unlimited everything pre-paid for $70/mo - still lower than others. I'm on the $30/mo pre-paid plan.
Yeah, tmos coverage is pretty spotty. At my house I'll randomly switch from fast 4g to 2g, even if i didnt move the phone.
Pay the extra loot and switch to Verizon if you want epic signal.

I wish i can cancel it but have 4 lines in order to get new phones
T-Mobile has pretty spotty coverage outside of urban areas, whenever I go on a road trip I spend most of it on edge.

Ok cool so its not just me from what it sounds like. Now I know why t mobile is losing a lot of there post paid accounts most likely from there spotty network
I came from 2 years on att to simple mobile but I can speak on the t mobile signal quality. Compared to att, it should be known that t mobile service is a heck more spotty than others and your data will suffer big time. I went to the middle of no where a few months back with a friend that had att, I had 1 bar and edge in an open field while he had 2 bars with hspa+. He didn't have an lte phone at the time but from experience, att has better coverage. In the same areas t mobile is said to have good coverage and truthfully, although t mobile will roll out lte, I doubt it will be as good. I searched for their new towers, and they have over 10 new ones in Manhattan all clustered up so yeah, t mobile has the best coverage in the ny central park region. Going back to att when I get a job and am able to pay for my own cell. For the time being, simply mobile works good. T mobile will be getting better and better through the years

LMAO @ OP... Cancel service because one time you traveled out of Colorado you don't get 4g??? I mean, if u went to Philly often u would have known this already I'm sure, so its apparent u don't travel to Philly often.
Was a thread really needed? Think if everyone that traveled to an edge location complained and threatened to leave their provider on an internet forum... LOL do whatever u want dude... we really don't care.
Hope u can find enough signal in Philly to read the threads comments

Sorry but I like things to work when I pay 500 out of pocket for a phone. Your phone should be running tip top in every major city no reason for this in 2013. Do some research about t mobile they lost a good bit of post paid customers so Im not the only one that thinks their trash. Their also one of the 3rd most hated companies in the US. I follow them on google plus if anyone needs some citations.
How can you be one of the 3rd? Arent you either 3rd or you are not?
If i helped hit thanks
Whatever have fun with your trash network.
you're your, there their there one of the third? Weigh it for what it's worth......
Good riddance, go pay more for the same service on VZW like all the other dummies, more bandwidth for me, not that I'm lacking any here

Is it Possible to Connect to Other Carrier's Data Networks?

I'm on a rooted T-Mobile phone running CM10.1 nightlies and have T-Mobile as my carrier. I go to the Catskills a lot, and, except when I'm in a "big" town, I'm on Edge (literally and figuratively). I'm told that AT&T and Verizon have better infrastructure up there than does T-Mobile.
I tried enabling national data roaming and selecting LTE/GSM/WCDMA under network mode settings, but then when I search for network operators it takes forever and doesn't find anything.
What do I need to do to be able to connect to the other carriers' networks, or is it even possible?
Thanks for any advice.
I almost sure that your account needs to have roaming data enabled and carriers to have roaming agreement. I remember during storm Sandy Tmo and Att shared towers for a while and phone automatically connected to stronger provider. This is not phone issue. Other providers not allowing you on theirs networks.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
In short. No. You can't. There are some areas where we can roam on att but they're limited ans you only get 50 megs of domestic roaming data.

Thanks very much for your responses. I guess I'll look into getting another phone on one of those other carriers. Maybe prepaid for only when I go up there. Or maybe just a prepaid sim, if that even exists. I never researched it.
Thursday my Note 2 popped onto AT&T randomly. I just happened to be looking at my signal widget and it showed at&t, I was in a decent tmo location as well but on wifi. Wierd.

The last time it happened to me, Calls worked just fine. I got to test data since I blew through the roaming limi.
But this was last year when I had the One S. It even had 4G/HSPA on AT&T. Except the roaming limit was so low I blew through it in a few minutes.
I should also mention this happened to me when I was driving through/in Colorado/Arizona

"Death Grip"?

Hey guys, Not sure if this is normal or not, but in my house I get 1 bar signal with the phone bare and laying on the table. If I put my case on it (Spigen Slim Armor View) it loses that one bar. (without case I get 101-DBm, with the case it jumps to 109-DBm or so. I thought it was the case at first but than I remembered the "death grip" so I put my hands on both sides of the phone while it was laying on the table and it lost the bar from my hands covering the sides.
The case i have can be taken apart into three pieces. I stripped it down to JUST the TPU part and put that on the phone, and it still loses it just with the TPU part of the case on it. Originally I figured I'd just get a different case to use at home where I have low signal but it seems I can't even use a regular TPU case without it dropping the signal...
Anyone else in low services area's experiencing the same?
(Note: I have a T-mobile S4, but its unlocked and running on AT&T's network. Not sure if that matters but I figured since the phone itself is T-mobile I'd post here)

Do you get 4g lte or just 4G/hspa?
seeming you only get 1 bar in your house, i would assume any little thing would disrupt your 1 par, since its so weak in the first place. This is the reason why i love wifi calling so much because if i didnt have it, id be in the same boat as you

Yeah Wifi calling is cool but I don't make many phone calls anyway, the only problem is the 1 bar of signal is enough to receive text messages. If I have my case on and it loses that 1 bar, I get text messages about 45 minutes after they're sent to me. Which is really annoying since I hate leaving my phone bare in order to get my texts on time... Guess that's the price I pay from going to AT&T from Verizon network.
Their coverage map shows "Good" at my address (Which it is, OUTSIDE) but inside any building its garbage.

I see, however inside my house I don't get LTE (well it goes in and out, but the speeds are like 1mb down and 0.50 up when it does connect) So should I continue to keep it on automatic at home? (Data doesn't matter though, I run on Wifi at home, its just signal strength that I need increased so if the LTE/GSM setting is best for better reception I'll keep it on that at home anyway.
