I have 2.2.1 on my incredible and the revolutionary root keeps failing on me, ive done this many times owning different HTC phones so I don't think i'm missing a step, should i accept the 116mb update from verizon? or is that gonna really stop me from rooting? Does anyone have a better method for the 2.2.1?

2.3.4 OTA does kill root for now. where does it fail in the root process? Lots of people (including me) had the flashing cwm fail during revolutionary, but i got it manually afterwards.
So you were able to root with 2.2.1? It just says when life gives you lemons blah blah..failed..press any key to exit

Ok what you wanna do is install the ruu from my thread thats stickied in general (2. 3.3) then run revolutionary
Thats how i got root my phone was on 2.2.1 when i got it

I have always preferred Toast's root method over Unrevoked, just because of all the bad things I have heard about unrevoked.
I just got a replacement Evo and I'm looking to root it again. It seems like if I search for "root evo 2.2" it always pulls up unrevoked. Am I wrong that unrevoked is causing so many problems? Or is it? It definitely is much easier, but easier isn't always better.
I am aware of these guides from Toast (Toast Part 1,and Part 2) But I can't tell if he updates them with every new method. Last time I used his method it downgraded my PRI which I dont want to do again.
Anyways... my questions are: does Toast update his threads? and is Unrevoked a safe root method?
Thanks
I dont know about unrevoked, but as for toast havent seen much update from him...as for pri update there's a file to update it. So dont worry about it.

But the PRI goes to 1.77 but it comes with 1.71 from Sprint. Is 1.77 official? Or ripped from something else?
I might go with unrevoked just to keep my pri.

It may come with the latest ROM but I more suspect that it will come with the original (shipped) ROM and immediately receive the OTA update. The good news is that there are no issues rooting even if you have the OTA applied (I think some of the rooting guides assume you do) so I would go ahead and apply the OTA if prompted. This is different than the Desire Z where the latest updates can make rooting more complicated.
The most widely recommended method of obtaining permanent root is the "gfree" method, it will permanently root your phone and at the same time will SIM unlock it as well as set the CID so you could load whatever carrier ROM you might want to.
The only issue most people seem to have with using the gfree method is getting ADB up and running and talking to your G2. Using ADB isn't (as far as I know) strictly necessary to make gfree work but it's easiest and all the guides (that I've seen) have you use ADB.
Here is the section of the wiki showing you how to use gfree to root your phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...cess_.28Permanent_Root_.2F_.22Permaroot.22.29
For instructions for getting ADB up and running I would look here:

Could you please stop telling people to use the VISIONary method!? That method has a risk of putting the user's phone into a boot loop! Please know you what your talking about before attempting to help some one, it can make the difference of bricking a phone and rooting a phone. Rage and GFree DOES NOT have a risk of putting your phone in a boot loop. Out of all the people that have messed up their phone, EVERY ONE of them that I have seen has used the VISIONary method. I'm not trying to be mean, but please be more careful when giving advice. I know your just trying to help, and I respect you for that but please do no tell some one to do the VISIONary method.
Sorry mate, I had no clue bout that. I had no loop but i see your point

yes, you are required to downgrade as only 1.34 is rootable at the moment.
you'll get 15 different opinions regarding whether or not visionary is safe, but the general consensus is that it is okay to use to obtain temp root, but very risky to try and perma-root with it.
oke i started downgrading but i'm getting an error "Main version is older update failed" what did i do wrong?
EDIT: Nvm what i did wrong was the usb setting it should be Charge only
..
so did you get it to work just fine after downgrading ?
Using visionary is harmless. I constantly use it to root and unroot my g2. The method you may have come across could be slightly different than what I read so I would say compare similar facts between the two. I got my rooting info from here: http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/20/how-to-root-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision-visionary-method/ . Theunlockr has video tutorials posted as well as text tutorial. So using this method should help majorly.

does visionary still temp root htc desire z 1.82.. ? wouldnt work for me when i last tried )=
Can we use the desire s alpharev
Way to root the incredible 2. Since it has the same hboot. But the question is will it pick up ur phone. Might be a dumb question but worth asking.

are you on 2.3.3 or 2.3.4?
He's obviously asking about the latest OTA. I was wondering the same thing when I saw it was the same bootloader version.
I don't think it'd work, being as the hardware is totally different.

I'm by no means telling you to try it but I do know that the virtuous team had a way to flash a different hboot on a device. I can't remember if it was the incraedible s or the desire s though. Might wanna check in with them
I don't recommend it. Especially since AlphaRev has an S-Off tool for rooting the DINC2, which is what I used, and it's almost entirely idiot-proof (which was really good for me at the time). There's also a YouTube walk-through of the process.
Yea but is for the 0.97.0000 bootloader not the 0.98.0000 bootloader. I used that same video for my previous dinc2 but I got this one and it git the update thru the first night I had it. Anywayz I want to root but need more info and nobody has asked this question and I hate waiting for the reach around. <<<< funny

I am extremely interested in this, as i also did the OTA update to 2.3.4 before checking to see if there was a root for it yet (dumb, i know...). Figured the device was as popular as the dinc 1 and would get root updates pretty fast.
I seen that alpharevx was asking for a link to our 98 hboot on twitter, to me that's a pretty good sign that they are working on an exploit for 2.3.4
hey im about to get my dinc 2 in a few days so ive been researching root methods and ive noticed theres quite a few. Im feelin kinda protective of it ya know xD so any particular root method you recommend?
First go to dev section and check out attn 1 post then general section and check rivera82falcon post also if you Google root droid incredible 2 gingerbread 2.3.4 there are videos for both

If you are just getting it it won't be on gingerbread yet. Mine wanted to update to gb shortly after I left the store. I think "alpharevx" works for froyo. If you do update to gb you'll want to use "revolutionary.io". This will give you s-off. I used revolutionary.io so that's the one I know. So once you've got s-off with rev it'll let you install "clockwork recovery mod". I think it gives you the option to root also. I actually lost my internet connection after getting s-off so I had to push cwr and superuser with abd.
it is gingerbread (2.3.4 to be exact) and ive googled it before. the issue is that im using ubuntu ad idk how to run revolutionary on ubuntu

Revolutionary won't work on the 2.3.4 ROM. You need to downgrade first using this tool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1298990
I went back and checked I was on 2.3.3 and did use revolutionary.io to get s-off. Not sure about what it was straight out of the box but definitely gb s-offed with revolutionary. Not sure what version of hboot I had.
