hey im about to get my dinc 2 in a few days so ive been researching root methods and ive noticed theres quite a few. Im feelin kinda protective of it ya know xD so any particular root method you recommend?
First go to dev section and check out attn 1 post then general section and check rivera82falcon post also if you Google root droid incredible 2 gingerbread 2.3.4 there are videos for both

If you are just getting it it won't be on gingerbread yet. Mine wanted to update to gb shortly after I left the store. I think "alpharevx" works for froyo. If you do update to gb you'll want to use "revolutionary.io". This will give you s-off. I used revolutionary.io so that's the one I know. So once you've got s-off with rev it'll let you install "clockwork recovery mod". I think it gives you the option to root also. I actually lost my internet connection after getting s-off so I had to push cwr and superuser with abd.
it is gingerbread (2.3.4 to be exact) and ive googled it before. the issue is that im using ubuntu ad idk how to run revolutionary on ubuntu

Revolutionary won't work on the 2.3.4 ROM. You need to downgrade first using this tool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1298990
I went back and checked I was on 2.3.3 and did use revolutionary.io to get s-off. Not sure about what it was straight out of the box but definitely gb s-offed with revolutionary. Not sure what version of hboot I had.

Hey guys well i crashed the software on my old evo due to rooting lol. IM getting a new one shortly. What Im asking is a REALLY GOOD step by step guide, with the links to download the right files, to root the 2.2 stock froyo it comes with BUT ALSO nand-unlocking it while im rooting it. The reason im asking for this was I had a hard time flashing cyanogen mod 6 after i used the root method from djr3Z from the droid demos website (It was downgrading the stock 2.2 to stock 2.1, rooting 2.1 and then finally going to a rooted 2.2 with Amon Ra recovery) Please help me! Im a noob and i would really appreciate it. Thx in advance!
Nand wasn't unlocked fully with the method you used. Many people had that issue. You can either unlock nand and be done, or wait a few days for the latest unrevoked to come out.
Here is how to unlock nand :

If you followed regaw's complete tutorial, including unrevoked-forever, you unlocked your nand and have the ability to flash custom roms. I know because I did it and am currently running Fresh 3.2. I also made nandroid backups and boot between them.
You can't jump right in to Cyanogen because you're on the wrong hboot. Cyanogen requires hboot 76, and you're probably on 93 or similar from regaw's method. Boot phone holding volume down and check it out.
I can't post links, but you can search the forums for "ENG hboot 76" and probably get the right post on how to get hboot back. Also, I believe it may be easier to find the link in the actual Cyanogen forums.
Keep in mind this downgrades your PRI to 1.3 instead of 1.40. Find the fix for that in a different thread.
Good luck.

Ok thx for that. The only question is when i get my evo and its on stock 2.2 should i do the nand-unlock, will that also root the phone in the process?
By the time you get your phone unrevoked will be out, with unrevoked, you just do a couple of mouse clicks and your done.
Also, unlocking nand is different than rooting. You must be rooted first in order to unlock nand. Just wait for your phone first, unrevoked will make it easy and painless for you.

Unrevoked is a great tool that truly makes it easy. When i rooted without it, I lost everything. But unrevoked doesn't delete anything at all. Will the new one unlock and or will you still need forever and .76 boot img?

Not sure, still no details on their site. I recommend getting the .76 hboot because roms like cyanogenmod wont flash on other versions.

yea i got my evo back that i broke. They fixed it and brought it back to 2.1. I turned it off to charge it. Whne it was done and i turned it on instead of it booting up the sprint music with the 4g symbol, it went into htc with the cursive letters popping up quietly brilliant. Anyone has had this issue? I mean after that it goes smooth im on the interface and all goes well any advice?

Sounds like you have the oldest version of 2.1 like they did a factory reset. No issue. Your phone is primed and ready for rooting. If you are going to run CM6, then I would suggest using Toast's method to root and nand unlock. This will give you the necessary eng hboot 0.76.2000 to run that ROM. Although you may want to do search through the forums for a means of unlocking nand without downgrading your PRI to 1.34_003 (current is 1.40_003). The eng-PC36IMG.zip in Toast's part 2 "How to unlock nand" will downgrade your PRI.

You are ready to rock n roll now.
First Step - Root
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-root-the-htc-evo-4g-unrevoked-method/
Second Step - Unlock Nand with Toastcfh .76 Eng Bootloader
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-unlock-nand-on-the-htc-evo-4g/
Third Step - Get ROM Manager
Go to the android market and download ROM Manager. Once installed, open the app and have it flash a custom recovery for you, either clockworkmod or RA.
Have Fun.
Hi
I bought an Evo on Nov 23rd and need to root it for wifi tethering.
I have been researching on the net and found a gazillion sites, videos and links for it, but not sure which one is really applicable in my case.
Also, based on my research on this forum, I found the following thre links that might wor, but not sure which is really applicable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787304
For your reference, the phone has HBOOT-2.02.0000 with S-on, Android version 2.2 and Software number 3.30.651.3.
Thanks
I was able to soft root my phone using z4root 1.3 (it has a permanent root option also). My wifi tethering app is installed but i am not able to connect to the network using it from my laptop.
I have an open question on the forum still on this so I am not sure this is the way to go but is an option.
Seems like z4root 1.3 does not work with HTC Evo.

Be very careful! I say that from experience. I have an Epic also that was super easy to root. But, I got the EVO the other day and have the same software as yours. Unrevoked root works with all EVO's except ours. And I bricked my EVO on a one-click method. Fortunetely it was so messed up that Sprint can't do anything with it except give me a new phone. I'm gonna leave root alone for awhile with this phone.
You can NOT root version 3.30, and you can NOT root using unrevoked3 if you are running Hboot 2.02
I mean you can root by going back to another version - but i couldnt even begin to tell you how to do all that...

I found this link on xda forums for HBoot 2.02: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
Would this method work?
Let me know. If it doesn't, I might have to wait for some time to have some Android genius find out a way to root my Evo version.
The first post is the one you need.

Will unrevoked work?
No it doesn't...the unrevoked dev team is working on one.
leenypost was refering to this thread:
[ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - Root! The Final Frontier Edition - Upd. 12.21.10
i think they have but im not the one that wants to do it, i cant cuz my other evo got rooted with Simple root so i didnt have to do it the long Way but i dont have that phone anymore. Any takers?
All you need to do is follow the link ICEReaction posted. It's very straightforward.
just downgrade using a stock RUU then use old root methods
im VERY noob wen it comes to cmd, shell cd to etc. and all that i guess the hard part is the Command prompt i can open but wen changing or anything i get path not found etc

This will not work. If your phone is new and came with hboot 2.02 or 2.10 it is a no go. If you have an older EVO you can flash a rom with a lower SW version and then use an RUU that matches that version if you like and then use unrevoked to root... But that's way more work to then get back up to 3.70 than just following the supplied thread.
Thread moved to Q&A.
Can we use the desire s alpharev
Way to root the incredible 2. Since it has the same hboot. But the question is will it pick up ur phone. Might be a dumb question but worth asking.

are you on 2.3.3 or 2.3.4?
He's obviously asking about the latest OTA. I was wondering the same thing when I saw it was the same bootloader version.
I don't think it'd work, being as the hardware is totally different.
Sent from my rooted MIUI Dinc2
I'm by no means telling you to try it but I do know that the virtuous team had a way to flash a different hboot on a device. I can't remember if it was the incraedible s or the desire s though. Might wanna check in with them
I don't recommend it. Especially since AlphaRev has an S-Off tool for rooting the DINC2, which is what I used, and it's almost entirely idiot-proof (which was really good for me at the time). There's also a YouTube walk-through of the process.
Yea but is for the 0.97.0000 bootloader not the 0.98.0000 bootloader. I used that same video for my previous dinc2 but I got this one and it git the update thru the first night I had it. Anywayz I want to root but need more info and nobody has asked this question and I hate waiting for the reach around. <<<< funny

I am extremely interested in this, as i also did the OTA update to 2.3.4 before checking to see if there was a root for it yet (dumb, i know...). Figured the device was as popular as the dinc 1 and would get root updates pretty fast.
I seen that alpharevx was asking for a link to our 98 hboot on twitter, to me that's a pretty good sign that they are working on an exploit for 2.3.4
Just got an incredible tonight, seem to be getting hung up in the root process. I'm following instructions here to root 2.3.4 and when I run unrevoked 2.33 it "fails to flash recovery image." I've installed the modified drivers and usb debugging etc is enabled. Is there a better root method, or way to downgrade without rooting? This is my first time on HTC so bear with me.
edit: About half way through the htcdev method, seems to be good. Stumbled on it right after I posted this of course..
Hey I've run into the same exact issue. Did the HTCdev method work, and if so any direction you can point me? First time ever rooting a phone and I've seemed to pick a difficult one. Got this incredibly for free so wanted to root it and make it my mp3 player to free up SD space on my Galaxy Nexus.

You should be using unrevoked 3.22, not 2.33.
Yeah I had the same issue with that... when your running 2.3.4 it is mainly the version of unrEVOked you use (if you follow the directions)found that out after the 5th version of the program. Also do not use z4root it never works. But yeah definitely make sure you have the right version compatible with your build of gingerbread/froyo
