Hey all, just wondering if anyone has tried to see if they can root the OTA to Froyo. Not that I need it, but I figure there is bound to be people who do in the coming days (both from their own stupidity, and some from being absolutely new after the update). The PRI doesn't change, so I'm guessing that's got to be at least some good news. I have no idea what it might take to root it, or even what measures were included in the OTA to prevent rooting. Just wondering if anyone is working on it.
Also, does anyone know how we can change our PRI's? I used the Froyo flash without root and still have the old pre-1.40 PRI. Also, does the PRI have anything to do with the market not showing copy protected apps? If it does, then I may actually need root again... LOL. Anyways, just hoping someone is looking in to finding a new root method and perhaps figuring out PRI/market issues.

The OTA is rooted. Search the forums. PRI is tied to the ENG HBOOT, so you are stuck with 1.34 if you want to keep root.

I think he is talking about a root method for those running the stock OTA.

If we don't want to keep root is there a way to change the pri back?

Ditto thats what I think hes referring to as well. Hopefully the method doesn't include downgrading like before and then losing the PRI, but if it does we can get a way of extracting it this time.

If you don't want root, v1.47 OTA has PRI 1.40 in it's HBOOT, same as Froyo release floating around.

As far as the OTA being rooted, no it's is not.If you upgrade OTA you will NOT have root. The rooted froyo roms in the forums all use THE SAME ENG HBOOT, which means you will be stuck with PRI 1.34

My problem is that I already flashed the "unofficial" Froyo update that I got directly from HTC. It didn't update the PRI, and I don't think I can flash a downgraded ROM. I guess I can try, but most likely I'd have to use the RUU and the 1.47 RUU never works for me.

What is this PRI and what are the differences in the versions?
I'm already rooted but would like to go back to full stock so there is no way for me to get my pri back to 140 because others are saying when you unroot it stays at 134

Yeah...even going back to stock you will still have 1.34, unfortunately. You can hex edit it to say 1.40 but that is cosmetic only.

If the Froyo update really did wipe HBOOT, why didn't the PRI change? Maybe it didn't actually do anything to the HBOOT? If that's the case, maybe those who had full root can still gain root through the bootloader. Anyways, someone really needs to find a way to get our PRI upgraded. Its sad that even switching to stock won't fix it.
Hey all,
Attention Read all before doing anything!
So I followed the ##786# and updated my PRI. Worked flawlessly, might need to do it a few times to work.
However my bootloader updated...and I could no longer ADB to my phone...So I re did my root, which restored me from 2.2 to 1.36..or which ever toasts Root version was for. It also took a bunch of trys...had to manually install superuser, then restored my rom.
gotta love NAND backup.
Anyway, any ideas? was im being stupid and doing something wrong? or does PRI .4 screw the bootloader?

Yeah if you read them right you would have known you didnt have to load any files just do a ##786 wipe and be done with it. might take a few trys. But good catch READ READ READ then read it again
I did that. And I got .4 pli. My bootloader changed to .70 and and stopped working...wanted to know if that was isolated or not

To clarify, in case someone stumbles across this and does this. Were you Rooted before running ##786#? Did you run Unrevoked forever? What method did you do to re-root your phone?
Thanks
I was full rooted prior by toasts method of Root & nand unlock.
I was on Hboot V .76
I never did unrEVOked Forever.
I did ##786# to update PRI from .36 to .4
Hboot changed to .79
I could no longer ADB.( i dont know if its a result of .79 or a coincidence)
I was looking through the forums, a post suggested redoing the 2nd part of Toasts Root(nandroid unlock) That just fubared my phone even more ha ha.
So I re did Step one, then Step two of Toast. However that did not work. I eneded up using this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741294 then manualy updating Superuser.apk from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828
Hope that helps!

Hmmm... This is really odd. I am wondering how many other people this has happened to. I did the same update, ##786# without having unrevoked forever (something about putting my phone in a state that CAN NOT be returned to stock). I still have 0.76 hboot. I'm wondering if it is due to the ROM you were on. I know people are getting mixed results with different ROM's. Actully some are getting mixed results on the SAME roms. I had to run the update twice, for some it worked first try, others had to do it 5-10-20 times to work...
I'm waiting for this for a couple of days. Till its ironed out.

i rooted on my old phone when i was on 1.47xxx, i had to send it back to sprint and now im on 3.26.651.6 but i do not want to run unrevoked...i dont know, it just rubs me the wrong way. is there anyway i can do that??? i tried searching for root 3.26 but nothing really helps...
could i downgrade to 1.47 and then root? anybody done that? sorry for the idiotic question...after i rooted the first time, i stopped paying attention to root topics and dont know how advanced rooting is now. i nkow theres a new ota 3.29 but i havent upgraded yet...
Unrevoked 3.21 works very well, I recommend using it. If you do, you'll be rooted in 5 minutes.

You can downgrade in Regaw's how to root 2.2, and then instead of running unrevoked you can use any other root method for 2.1.
Edit... I did it this way too.

I rooted with simple root the first time with my phone. Then I got one for my wife with 3.26 and I rooted it with unrevoked 3.21 and honestly its easy as hell. I would just suggest using Amon afterwards. The only way unrevoked has issues working is if you dont install the HBoot driver properly. Other than that its just click and wait it out no downgrading
P.S. I felt the same way you did about unrevoked but they have come a long way and I really dont hear many issues with the new 3.21... IMO

well i dont know. i tried it yesterday and it didnt work for me. so i said to hell with it. but i dont know, maybe ill give it another try.
what exactly does unrevoked do vs. other methods of rooting? i downloaded the file and it was only 23mb...when i rooted my first time the file was like 171mb plus the recovery image and eng boot yada yada yada...maybe i just need a refresher course lol
unrevoked needs the ABSOLUTE NEWEST software. try manually upgrading (settings, system updates, htc software update) and then try it. it is small bcuz it doesn't wipe you and install a completely new firmware and software that is rooted (hard way) it simply exploits the software you already have with no wipe (easy way)

That's not true. I just rooted using unrevoked 3.21 with the previous software version on my Evo. After rooting with unrevoked, I flashed a rooted pc36img.zip to update to the current ota.

Unfortunately I'm not at a computer, but there's only 1 method for rooting posted by regaw so should be easy to find.
I downloaded unrevoked 3 ive rooted mine and my girlfriends phone with no issues. However we have had our evos since the 1st day they came out. Will unrevoked work for 3.3 on the evo? If not is there a simple way someone who isnt to good with computers like myself can root these phones?

If your HBOOT version is 2.02 or 2.10, then no, unrevoked will not work.
From what I am reading... if you say you got your EVO from day 1, I assume that is June 4th, all EVOs from that date are from 0.87 HBOOT so yes, unrevoked would work for you.
Check your HBOOT version just in case.

I think what you want to know, is how to update to a 3.30.651.3 rom and keep root?
If that is what you are asking, then yes, you can look for one like in this topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836728
You can download it and follow the directions, its easy. You should already be rooted, so if you install a rooted rom you should be OK.
If you are still on 3.29, make sure that you have S-OFF and ran Unrevoked Forever.
BASICALLY YES I BOUGHT MY EVOS THE 1ST FRIDAY THEY CAME OUT JUNE 4TH I BELIEVE. IVE NEVER DID ANYTHING TO IT EXCEPTH DOWNLOAD UPDATES SENT BY SPRINT. I FPUND OUT ABOUT ROOTING FOR FREE WIFI. DOWNLOADED UNREVOKED. DOWNLOADED THE ANDROID DRIVERS I GUESS BC IM USING WINDOWS 7 I NEEDED THEM. PLUGGED MINE AND MY GFS PHONE IN AND BAM! UNREVOKED HAD ME ROOTED IN MINUTES. SO I START GETTING A LITTLE COCKY AND GET ON THIS FORUM AND SEE IM WAY OUT OF MY LEAGUE. IM TRYING MY BEST TO SOAK IN AS MUCH INFO BY READING ALOT OF THE INFO IN THE Q&A FORUMS. NOT EXZACTLY SURE WHAT FLASHING ROM IS NOT SURE WHAT A KERNEL IS. FROM READING WHAT EVERYONE ON HERE IS DOING IAM WAYYYY BEHIND THE EIGHTBALL LOL. SO WHATS A EASY WAY FOR SOMEONE LIKE ME TO ROOT THE NEW EVOS. WILL UNREVOKED WORK? ALSO WHAT DO YOU RECCOMEND SOMEONE LIKE ME DO TO AN EVO THAT HASNT REALLY BEEN MODIFIED EXCEPT UNREVOKED?

Ok...so you first got the EVO when it came out in June, rooted it, but then applied a Sprint OTA update and lost root?
I'm not entirely sure what you are really asking because if you already obtained root, why would you need to root it again?
No i havent lost root. My phone is rooted. My friends have the new evo with the 3.3 software. Before i tell em to drive up to baltimore from richmond i wanna make sure it will work. Thre reason i posted the info about my phone is i guess it would just be useful for people to see what exzactly i have and would need

So this spec is his phone or yours? If this is his phone, then you can use unrevoked3 (I assume since the build is 3.29, the HBOOT is 0.97 or so).
No this is my phone
He just bought his from radioshack 4 days ago so im assuming he has all the newest software. Also thanks for explaining the difference in unrevoked 3 and forever on my other thread. Im assuming i need to save any info on my phone before running unrevoked forever. Sorry to be bouncing around so much but im just so anxious to learn so heres 2 questions
1) when flashing roms, is unrevoked 3 a tool i can use. Can i just click custom then select the rom i want to flash?
2) for my buddys phone, what is the simplest way to root his phone since unrevoked will not work. Im reading the tjread everyone is referring to as 'like a boss" but its not making much sense
1. I assume from you asking about unrevoked forever, you are still S-ON and trying to get S-OFF? When you ran unrevoked3, it should've installed a custom recovery (ClockworkMOD is what unrevoked uses I believe). That's where you flash unrevoked forever and any custom ROMs later (the files need to be on the root of your SDcard - meaning not in any folders).
To get to recovery: power off, then when you turn it back on, hold down VOL DOWN and POWER and that will put you into bootloader. It may attempt to locate PC36IMG.zip/etc files but you prob won't have them which is fine, after that, select Recovery and hit Power and you should be booting into recovery.
If you can, I would suggest doing a nandroid backup of your phone so in case anything does get messed up while flashing, you can restore back. To do this, go to backup or something like that (sorry, I use Amon_RA's recovery so the wording is most likely different). Once you are backed up, go to 'install zip from sdcard', then 'choose zip from sdcard', and then pick the file you want to flash. After that, reboot and you should be good to go.
Some custom ROMs require you to do a full wipe (data/cache/dalvik-cache - wipe each one twice) before you flash, so to do that you go to recovery and choose the wipe option. Stuff like radios, kernels, themes, you only need to wipe the cache and dalvik-cache.
2. As for your buddy's phone....I am not too familiar with the new EVO root methods but I think the "like a boss" edition which is now updated to "Yea, I'm On Top" edition seems to be the new way to root the new EVOs until unrevoked or someone else comes out with another way. You can check out these threads to get a better understand and post in them too if you have any questions and the guys with experience when those methods should be able to help. Sorry, I can't be of too much help here.

2.3.4 OTA does kill root for now. where does it fail in the root process? Lots of people (including me) had the flashing cwm fail during revolutionary, but i got it manually afterwards.
So you were able to root with 2.2.1? It just says when life gives you lemons blah blah..failed..press any key to exit
