Evo Opening Tool? - EVO 4G Accessories

I was going to teardown evo, so I bought 'plastic opening tool' to open it. After removing the six screws, I had a hard time detach the red shell. My plastic opening tool easily broke after applying a little pressure. Anyone has good idea how to open it?

Hey there. Just opened my evo for the first time yesterday. I wont mention the method that I used because it left little jagged edges in my plastic frame. I would try again with a plastic "safe-pry" tool, just like the green ones you posted. It takes considerably more force than I had expected after removing the torx screws, both to remove the backing (pictured in your post) and to remove the screen (this is what I was up to - cracked glass replacement). "A bit of adhesive" is what I was told holds the glass into the plastic frame... understatement of the year with my Evo. I really had to work at it. Again, the tool I used jacked me up a little, so I would not reccommend using anything other than something plastic that can slide in between the separation of the frame and whatever you are trying to remove. Good luck!

so THATS what the inside of my phone looks like
I'm too afraid to even attempt to open mine..
I had a dream one night that I dropped it in the toilet, I quickly took out the battery dried it off, but it was broke.
I woke up sweaty and relieved that it was just a dream!!
Worst dream ever ><

I've been looking everywhere for a plastic safety tool. Where can you buy them other than online

After removing the midget screws, I found two different ways to go about removing the housing. 1 a guitar pick, like shown. 2 a plastic credit card. Either will do just fine. ^^

This is what the beast looks like under the hood:

Just use your fingernail and go all the way around the case, ive had mine apart like fifty times, too easy...

Best website I've come across regarding Evo repair instructions, even provides links and purchasing options for the tools needed, as well as parts
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-HTC-Evo-4G-Rear-Speaker/3067/1
Hope this helps.
EDIT: Sorry, just realized this thread was like a month old.

Four clips around phone
The video is a good guide and same one I used, just adding a reminder.
The plastic tool is to be used along the gap to remove the adhesive and separate the clips along the sides of the phone, careful for the be clips or very delicate and can easily broken with your fingers.

I've always just use a small metal flathead screw driver. Never had any issues, but my frame is not structurally sound either. There is a crack near the 1/8" jack from throwing it around.

I was able to buy a complete set of tools from a frys electroic store. I use them to fix smartphones and laptops. Those green pry tools and guitar picks look like they should work. :good:

i was able to use my index fingers and thumbs to bump a 6 month old thread, and the back cover came right off. easy peasy.

Haha. Yeah, best advice I can give is to not force anything that feels like it is being stubborn and only use plastic tools when prying open things.

Those longer blue and green tools (about 2 in) with narrow edges are absolute junk. They broke on me during a screen replacement for a friend and i swapped to a metal electronics flathead and took my time. Only a few marred edges.

this has nothing really to do with this thread but i swear i thought the title said "eye opening tool" i then proceeded to "wat?" all over the place wondering why its in the accessories section for the evo, then i realized the error in my reading haha

I've used evo opening tools to open my eyes with minimal and painful success.

I usually use either an old gift card or my thumbnails.

ok after more than an hour of taking pictures and editing im finally ready to upload them and be done with this. geeze you cooks must have some patience! my hats off to ya...so here we go...hope this helps atleast one person out there to make it worth my time.
ok to start we are going to need a t6 screwdriver, a prying tool a percision phillips screwdriver. (I ADVISE YOU USE A ANTI-STATIC WRISTBAND TOO)

so flip your dash over, remove the battery cover, take the battery out, and set off to the side. locate the rubber pieces from the picture below and remove them with your prying tool.
this next part is VERY important. note the void sticker over the top of the right screw. by opening your case you void any warrenty that may be active. just use you t6 to remove both of the screw (note they are silver)
now we only have four more screws to remove to get the back panel off, they are circled in red below, use your t6 again here. these screws are black
with all the screws out of the back panel you now need to take your prying tool and put in between the back panel and the chrome piece on the dash, if this is your first time it will be tight. dont be afraid to use a little force. (on the real tight spots is where it latches, that where you need to pry)
now comes the part i found a little different between my two dash's. the one made in china is the one i used in this guide (i have included a picture of the other one to show the differences). go ahead and remove the back panel. on my china dash the wire to the battery thing was NOT connected to the back panel and on my other dash it WAS connected to the back panel.
i didnt circle it but in the second picture you can see a wire going to the back panel and in the first picture you dont see that. in the next step you can see it nice and snug under the connector.
now locate the connection from the picture below and lift it out of the socket. easy to do just use your nail on the end and lift up.
the circled red connector below holds that cabel on, just use your nails and lift straight up on this and set it off to the side. i sat it in the spot on the back panel that it was on with my other dash
with thoes done we move on to the next spot, with again is circled in red below. use your prying tool, as pictured, to open the latch up.
here i used my nails and removed the "cable" by using the two tiny tabs on the side
the next thing we need to disconnect is below. again use your prying tool to open the latch like you did before.
once you have it open use remove the "cable" by using the circled tab
now the we almost have the mobo off. soo use the t6 to remove the screw, this is also a silver screw but, as noted, their is a difference in size.
the last thing holding the mobo on is two clips, and guess what? their pictured below...
\
i just used my nail to hold one back a little and lifted the mobo out and set it aside. ( the picture shows the "front" of it)
the antenna just lifts off, but you dont need to remove it
and this is what you should see now
were now ready to remove that chrome piece, note that the two circled "cables" go THROUGH the chrome piece.
i used the prying tool to remove the chrome piece, it came off really easy. hopefully it does the same for you
and heres a picture showing the "cables" that go through the chrome piece
set the chrome piece off to the side, and were almost done here
now its time to remove that lcd, which is so easly broken for most people. see the circled peice on the back? that grounds it out, just peel it off. and remove the lcd. i just put my hand over it and flipped the phone over. it came right out and i set it off to the side
now we can see the finish line
their are 3 screws to remove to get the keyboard pcb board off. use a percision phillips screwdriver (the one pictured in my first post is just a small phillips, it worked just fine)
set it off to the side and the keypads will just fall out if you turn the phone over
and thats it. i did not include how to remove the jogger bar, i have not done soo, no need to. if you do please take pictures to add to the guide.
please let me know what you think. i have included all the pictures in a zip file, they are a little better quality.

Short List of what my procedure was:
1. unscrew top screws
2. cut to fit Evo landscape
3. put plastic on for fitment before glue.
4. applied glue to plastic, then glued to the wheel.
Waited to dry.
So I am always looking for ways to be crafty, and after CM6 was released, I needed a way to play my NBA Jam, NBA Hangtime, Megaman, etc. with a wiimote.
I was at the dollar store with my gf (Dollar Tree), and saw this Wii Steering wheel for a buck. I said what the heck, i'll buy it and make a project out of it.
Well, about an hour and a half later, i have my customized GameGear-Like Mount(Evo Edition)...
The wheel comes in 2 halves, with 4 screws(one in every corner) keeping them together. I removed the top 2 screws and sliced off the top half just enough to fit my Evo landscape. Reason only the top half was modified is to have back support for the device.
The flat piece of black plastic is actually the back door to an old tv/dvd remote i had lying around, i just sliced off the prongs/clips to make it as flat as possible.
Now the actual bracket like mount which i had superglued to the black plastic cover is from IQ Mobile solutions. I had purchased the car mount from bestbuy and it came with a few extra parts like this one. (its advertised there for an ipod/iphone, but it is completely universal, just mount the small plastic square on the back of your phone)
The product looks like this:
I slide my evo from the top into the little bracket and this thing holds like a freakin CHAMP! I couldn't be happier (except i did a half-ass job on the cutting of the plastic lol but for a DOLLAR WHO CARES!)
I couldn't take a pic while holding 2 handed, had to use a mirror lol
This is the product package I bought from Dollar Tree:
So lemme know what you guys think. Its really a simple procedure, i just can't believe it worked so well first shot!
Please don't post about the thing i had to stick on the back of my phone, if you dont like it, i'm sure you can figure a way to make something else work. I bought it as a car mount, made the sacrifice and it is Saweet! The extra pieces from the kit enabling me to make this was a blessing
Nicely done man, very creative. I like it a lot. I love sourcing stuff at the dollar store too! You can find a lot of useful stuff there. It looks like you have some kind of skin on the back of the phone? You said not to post about sticking something on the back, so I'm going to resist . Since you have the phone mounted to the center of the wheel, you can cut off the top two parts right? Or are they weight bearing?
Hell yeah man, that is awesome, great job on that, looks sick.

Thanks man, and I do have the Zagg invisible shield on the entire phone, i highly recommend it cuz lets face it, the evo is the first of MANY sick phones to come, so when a new one comes out, all i gotta do is peal off the invisible shield and the phone looks brand spankin new!
Its pretty much solid, but having the support on the sides def helps if the game is intense and i get to shaking it a lil lol I'm pretty sure it will support it tho.
My original idea a few weeks back was this and to make a mount on top:
But i hate waiting for shipments :\ but when i saw this at the dollar store, i bit for sure. Oh to think, I go for paper towels and come out with a gamegear-like project

I painted my otterbox

I needed some way to differentiate my dev phone from my daily phone. So, I grabbed some fusion plastic paint from Walmart. I scuffed the surface with a scotch-brite pad, then cleaned with 92% alcohol, then painted and applied clear-coat.

The paint also helps to hide the small crack I repaired next to the menu button.
I'll let you guys know how the paint holds up. What do you think?
Oh that's nice. You have given me inspiration!
Makes me really want an Oreo though.....
ive been tempted but, weary of paint scraping off and looking bad... I have some professional graffiti spray paint sitting around

Ive also had an idea about painting the phone itself. by lightly sanding and using Nail Polish and a super hard Clear Coat

Not if he goes and buys a quality clearcoat.
I mean, id even suggest going to autozone for automotive clear coat and using that. If you want it to really last, use a few coats.
EDIT: I should read the entire first post.
It looks good. Matches up with the colors from Andromeda.
Nice. My friend has an otterbox for his iphone just like that.
I should have done a better prep job. Do not use the method I mentioned above. Go with 400 grit sand paper to smooth out the surface, then 800 grit sandpaper to remove the 400 grit scuffs. Then use alcohol to clean and then paint.
It has received 1 chip so far which I attribute to improper surface prep.
Here's a picture I snapped to day of my ultra-jig and the arduino which I plan on communicating with.
ok now i want more info on your ultra jig....
what else does it do? just varriable resistance via the switches? so it would be able to enter dock mode too eh? anything else?
and the arduino? what you gonna do with that fun thing?
http://www.arduino.cc/
It's for all the factory modes and OTG mode listed here in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=820275 I plan on helping out on saving some bricks with the Arduino's communications libraries. The wrapped around wire will connect into the Arduino. Hopefully I can get some good USB to serial to UART going on.
i needed some fun reading...
Oh wow you made it. So you got the connection you were wanting.
!
That's pretty cool really stands out with those colors. but my case broke in same exact spot no more then 5 minutes ago. But hey if the case could talk it woukd have storys for days
Just call otter. They will send a new one. That's why I don't have a problem messing with this one. My new one was free. Just go on their website, dial the number in the upper right corner and tell them what happened to your case and where you bought it. They sent me a new one with that information only.

Sorry, this is off topic a bit but do you think clear coat nail polish would be able to make the rubber part of the Otterbox Commuter less rubbery (and maybe harder)?
I know you probably don't have the case, but I'm talking about this rubber piece that goes before the hard shell:
The reason for this is because the rubber piece is too rubbery and it collects a ton of dust. It also dislodges a bit when I take it out of my pockets due to it being rubbery so I was looking for something I could use to make it less so. I didn't think of nail polish though. Let me know if you think this would make sense. It's just a random idea in my head when I seen you mention it. I would just be using it on the exposed top and bottom parts.

Same problem here with the Commuter. I suspect that wouldn't work though. Ive been wrong before though.
a hard-coat or anything sprayed/painted on to the rubber would just flake off...

[Q] Scratched Camera EVO

Curious to know what solutions if any there are for this issue.
The lense cover on my EVO is pretty scratched up, any solutions to get it clear again? I already tried a little of the compound from my headlight lens restore kit, and that helped some, but its still pretty blurry.
Can the Sprint stores replace it? I also saw some posts in the HTC Desire forum where they used Sapphire glass to replace it, but theirs is built into the cover, ours isn't
I used to be a tech for Sprint and yes they can replace it, in fact its extremely easy to fix. The lens isnt even a lens, its just part of the back housing. If you have insurance it should be free (if the charge you, tell them you know better.) If you dont have insurance you can pay them $35 and they can replace it or you can buy a back housing from ebay for about $10. Its very easy to do but you will need a T4 screwdriver which can be purchased for a couple bucks at any hardware store.
Hmm, eBay solution sounds much better, already have the T4. Any disassembly how-to's anywhere that I should know about?
http://www.ifixit.com/blog/blog/2010/06/01/htc-evo-4g-teardown/
He says he used a T5, but I double checked and my takes a T4. Its super easy but the screws can strip easy so take your time on them.
Hope this helps. Feel free to PM if you have questions and thanks are appreciated!
You can purchase the lense cover on eBay for about $7. It's only held on by a small ring of adhesive. I had to replace mine a few months ago.
Simply remove the battery cover and use a small precision flat head screw driver or razor blade to pry off the scratched lense cover.

My pics look exactly like your first pic and my lens is all scratched up, thanks for photos now i know that is def my camera problem.

was clearing dust on top... glass between bezel and speaker broke.

I am so angry at me right now... There is plenty of dust collecting between top bezel and glass, so I sticked a fingernail in there in order to clean the dust and as I was making my way through the bezel, the screen broke on the way from bezel to speaker, so now I have 2mm long crack on top of the phone....
I guess I can't do anything with this now. Are there any cases that can hide this part ? I mean - cases that reach or cover the top speaker
Shame... its a fantastic device but build quality is rather delicate especially compared to htc one or nexus4
Wow that is the first time I heard of anyone with this kind of an issue. Best you can do is either try to use a Anti glare screen protector or use a vinyl sticker that changed covers everything else besides the display, that would help cover up the cracks. You should post a picture of the affected area to get better opinions.

Thanks for answer. What type of sticker do You mean ?
The full version of accident was like that:
in the morning I dropped my n2 from hands height (I am a tall 1,86m person) directly SCREEN onto tiles in my flat. I had pc+. Case and back cover FLIED away. I reinstalled everythig and noticed plenty of dust collecting on top - between bezel and screen in that little gap. So I started cleaning it and the area above speaker just cracked. I guess it must have been structurally damaged from the fall and I finished the job. I have n2 for 4 months and did that cleaning couple of times without problems.
Anyway. it looks like this

The crack is a little more visible in real and really annoys me. Thankfully it appeared above the speaker so there is now way that crack can continue further.
So, what are means of hiding it? Can You link the screen protector and tape You recommend ?
Also - I want to get new case. that pc+ maybe did the job but now I want a case that will have higher bumpers from the screen side. And I want those bumpers to reach further into the device if You know what I mean. At least so they will hide the mentioned gap, so dust wouldnt colelct in there. maybe uag ?
For future referance I never use nails instead use a business card as it is thin enough and rigid enough to het the dust out. And I have no idea why I thanked to previous post 2wice.

Have you seen those stands at the mall where they wrap your gadgets up with some type of vinyl sticker? It wraps around like Zagg invisible shield but you can choose different designs or texture and it actually holds on well. Well you can choose to only have it on the front screen and in white. I'm not much into all the various gimmicky covers available in the market but I'm using the Samsung Protective Cover+ which has protected my note2 pretty well and barely adds thickness.
