Short List of what my procedure was:
1. unscrew top screws
2. cut to fit Evo landscape
3. put plastic on for fitment before glue.
4. applied glue to plastic, then glued to the wheel.
Waited to dry.
So I am always looking for ways to be crafty, and after CM6 was released, I needed a way to play my NBA Jam, NBA Hangtime, Megaman, etc. with a wiimote.
I was at the dollar store with my gf (Dollar Tree), and saw this Wii Steering wheel for a buck. I said what the heck, i'll buy it and make a project out of it.
Well, about an hour and a half later, i have my customized GameGear-Like Mount(Evo Edition)...
The wheel comes in 2 halves, with 4 screws(one in every corner) keeping them together. I removed the top 2 screws and sliced off the top half just enough to fit my Evo landscape. Reason only the top half was modified is to have back support for the device.
The flat piece of black plastic is actually the back door to an old tv/dvd remote i had lying around, i just sliced off the prongs/clips to make it as flat as possible.
Now the actual bracket like mount which i had superglued to the black plastic cover is from IQ Mobile solutions. I had purchased the car mount from bestbuy and it came with a few extra parts like this one. (its advertised there for an ipod/iphone, but it is completely universal, just mount the small plastic square on the back of your phone)
The product looks like this:
I slide my evo from the top into the little bracket and this thing holds like a freakin CHAMP! I couldn't be happier (except i did a half-ass job on the cutting of the plastic lol but for a DOLLAR WHO CARES!)
I couldn't take a pic while holding 2 handed, had to use a mirror lol
This is the product package I bought from Dollar Tree:
So lemme know what you guys think. Its really a simple procedure, i just can't believe it worked so well first shot!
Please don't post about the thing i had to stick on the back of my phone, if you dont like it, i'm sure you can figure a way to make something else work. I bought it as a car mount, made the sacrifice and it is Saweet! The extra pieces from the kit enabling me to make this was a blessing

Nicely done man, very creative. I like it a lot. I love sourcing stuff at the dollar store too! You can find a lot of useful stuff there. It looks like you have some kind of skin on the back of the phone? You said not to post about sticking something on the back, so I'm going to resist . Since you have the phone mounted to the center of the wheel, you can cut off the top two parts right? Or are they weight bearing?

Hell yeah man, that is awesome, great job on that, looks sick.

Thanks man, and I do have the Zagg invisible shield on the entire phone, i highly recommend it cuz lets face it, the evo is the first of MANY sick phones to come, so when a new one comes out, all i gotta do is peal off the invisible shield and the phone looks brand spankin new!
Its pretty much solid, but having the support on the sides def helps if the game is intense and i get to shaking it a lil lol I'm pretty sure it will support it tho.
My original idea a few weeks back was this and to make a mount on top:
But i hate waiting for shipments :\ but when i saw this at the dollar store, i bit for sure. Oh to think, I go for paper towels and come out with a gamegear-like project

Anyone considering painting?

I want to paint my phone with gold and red. I see a lot of info on the net about painting your phone but I rather ask the xda crowd.
Will it affect phones signal?
Primer necessary? Any suggestions on brands or specific types of paint?
Am i mad?

dont worry lol. I changed my mind when i found a carbon fiber skin online.
If you have an airbrush you can do it, and make it look good.
I airbrushed a spare back cover for my Dinc, did it in a nice pearl metallic blue, was considering doing a pink camo one for my wife. An Airbrush, proper prepping, and patience will net you a nice result. You could also look in the ricer section of places like AutoZone and get carbon fiber wrap/decal/overlays and cut that out to your phone and cover it. Alot of options if you are crafty enough and take your time. I have been making phone docks for our work desks, nightstands/etc out of wood for our Dincs, and will be making a few prototypes for the X before it arrives some time next year You would think Motorola would produce the damn things.........
Do you have a blog or something it would be interesting to see what you've done
gold and red is TACKY. keep the dark gray and do some red accents.

No I dont have a blog, I just like to tinker, but here is a pic or two of the prototypes I have done for our Dinc's. This weekend I will probably do a full redesign and make 2 for my X with magnets embedded for the home dock Multimedia Mode.
I have made like 15 of these, moved on to hardwood and going to stain the first one, better sanding, etc, the 2 I made for my Mom look fantastic, also experimenting with different fabric, I got a sq yard of nice leather, wondering how much I should use, only on the back? the sides? so yeah, just tinkering.

lol, I actually made a mini Adriaondak chair for my moms Moto Droid. I only did one. Was a major pain as I had to cut so many small pieces, then glueing it together was another pain. Never again on that one.
Those are just blah prototypes. I moved onto better wood and now that I have the Dx, I am going to work on one that fits the phone, and fits the curve of the back and puts it into Desk Clock/Multimedia Mode. My work schedule keeps me limited to weekends, and it has been 105+ and I dont have AC in my woodshop. Was hoping to have a few 5-10 made by now and all the bugs worked out for the Dx model. Wifes Dx is coming around the end of the month so I still have a little time.
Looks cool!
Nice job!

[Q] Decent Armband?

Does anybody know of a decent armband for this phone? I had something that worked well for my Tilt2, but I don't think it will fit quite right for the Captivate...
Subbed for this
This looks pretty decent plus it has an extra pocket for keys, cards, condoms...you know, the necessities. http://www.thepocketsolution.com/Me...4&Category_Code=samsung_captivate_accessories
It seems like it might obstruct the headphone jack. It also seems like it barely fits as far as the height goes. Any other thoughts? (thanks for the link though!)
This one has access to the screen and headphone jack. Although there is nothing over the top to secure the phone.
And no I don't have it.

Ahhh,,,,, too late, I didn't see your post in time. It already shipped. This is the AB82 tune belt. Is that the model you had?
Anybody find any other options for these? I'm looking too.
I got the TuneBelt AB82 and you were right. It was to small. I called tunebelt and they happily replaced it for their new AB83. They say its the right size but I haven received it yet. I will report back when it arrives.
I got the AB83 and it fits well. The pouch is deeper than the phone which works well for me because i have my phone in a rubber case. I can push the buttons in the front easily but you have to feel around for the side buttons. The headphone jack isn't in the right spot so I cant put the phone in top down. I guess it will be just fine until something perfect comes out.
thanks for checking back in
anyone found anything better yet? It really kills me that it is hard to for runs with this thing
So this tune belt is working out really well. The top has a slit where you slide the phone in and I have the audio jack running to it there. The plastic window stays lifted from the phone a bit so taps and swipes register perfectly. I got use to the buttons on the sides and can hit them perfectly as well. I think even if something came out that was made specifically for the captivate I wouldn't buy it myself because the tune belt is just about perfect.
really is a good case, I got it after reading this topic a couple weeks ago. Phone fits in very well, even fits in with the Amzer case on it (its a bit more snug obviously). The holes not lining up isn't a big issue, I put it in the other way (with the headphone jack up at the entry point).
As for performance, I did 60 miles on my bike the day it came in. (I was really happy it came in!.. 10 mins before we left) For the most part I forgot it was even there, phone stayed dry from sweat and a brief rain shower. Screen was usable as there was nothing in front of it, and once I dialed in on where the side buttons were inside the case it was smooth sailing there too. Was a good investment.
I just ordered the AB83 after reading this thread. Thanks guys!
Yeah that AB83 looks good, plus they show a Fascinate in it in one of the pics on Amazon. I've been having to hold my phone while I run lol it's scary always hoping the sweat doesn't make me drop it.

don't know if anyone is willing to try this out.
http://www.droidarmband.com/
I posted in the Vibrant and i9000 forums, but I got the larger version of the Tune Belt. It fits with my phone still inside it's TPU case which is what I was looking for. I think the smaller version would be too tight if you want to keep it in your case.
If you have above average sized biceps, you will need the extension as the band is one of the shorter ones I've seen, but luckily the extension is very cheap and works well.
Here are some pics.

Damn, too bad none of these accommodate a 18" arm I would much rather have my phone on the arm at the gym instead of in my pocket. Sometimes when bench pressing dumbbells I have to rest the weights on my quadriceps for a short time, but if I do that with the phone in my shorts pockets, then i run the risk of laying 70-90lbs on it

[HOWTO] Custom Car Mount/Home Dock

Samsung Vibrant Car Mount/Home Dock
I posted this over at androidforums.com but I thought I'd put here just in case anyone is interested.
The total cost of this can vary, but it's still inexpensive. If you are like me and like sleek and not bulky, then this is for you.
Disclaimer: You take full responsibility of anything you do to your phone listed in this guide.
** Note: The desk mounting portion of this only works if you have a glass/smooth plastic surface **
Materials/Parts
Samsung Vibrant
Extra back cover OR Gel Case from TMobile ($16.99)
Garmin Suction Cup Mount ($14.23 +shipping from Amazon.com)
Found here: Amazon.com: Garmin Suction Cup Mount: Electronics
Something that can cut hard plastic (Gardening clippers work fine)
J-B Weld ($5 at most stores)
So the total cost of the parts if you decide to use the Gel Case from TMobile is approximately $40. If you're like me and don't need one of the extra back covers that your phone came with, then that will save you 17 bucks, bringing the total to $23. Not bad for how amazing this works.
Steps:
1. Take your Garmin Suction Cup Mount apart by removing the suction part from the clip (just pull it off).
2. Take something that can cut plastic. I used some gardening clippers, but you could choose to use a utility knife, small saw, etc...
3. Cut the parts as shown below.

}
4. Then clean the two surfaces that you'll be applying J-B Weld. Any oils can cause less strength in the weld. So clean off the extra back cover or the gel case, whichever you decide to use.
5. Apply J-B Weld as shown below.
6. Quickly place this onto your desired location on the extra back cover (or gel case) and hold firmly for approximately a minute. The weld will form and be very hard within 4 minutes, so be somewhat quick, but also careful. Picture of mine below:
7. That's it! I let mine sit for an hour or so before even testing, but at that point, it was plenty strong enough.
This can now mount to your windshield or a glass/smooth plastic or metal desk/table at home. With the brightness of this screen, sunlight is never an issue when mounted on the windshield. Be creative and put it wherever you want. More pictures below!
-------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for checking out this guide. I hope it helps someone or at least sparks some creativity to come up with something similar. Later!
Thats pretty sweet. How hard is it to get the case on and off your phone? Don't want to much wear on my phone.
That looks nice, but since I also have a glass desk. I just used another "car mount" and used it as a desk dock. Too lazy to do the diy, lol.

Well for me, I just leave the back cover in the suction mount. I felt that when I had to put the entire phone back into it, I was pressing a little too hard for my liking. So I find it easier to just take the phone off the back cover, and then put the extra one on the phone whenever I take it out.
Kind of a pain, and I probably won't do it forever, I just happened to have all of these parts so it didn't cost me anything. Plus it works really well for now.
Nice idea, but honestly I see people breaking their phones taking it on and off if they do it often.
I'll give you 9.5 for creativity thou.

Hehe thanks.
Yeah that's why I remove the phone from the back cover, rather than removing the phone + back cover. I found that I was pulling/pushing a little too hard than what felt comfortable.
Just thought I'd spark some creativity in people!

just my .02
You can also stick one of these clips to your phone. It's less bulky, and it's multi-purpose-able. I just love this setup, so I preach it wherever I can.
This idea would work really well with one of the slider cases. I'm not so sure I trust myself to be popping the back cover off in the car to reduce the bulk for non-dock use. It's brilliant DIY, though. I really like it.
well, I give A for effort, but that is GHETTO AS HELL.
Hi thanks for the great tips. I made my own pretty quickly. I think ill go back and make another one with better parts eventially. I cut the top off of my rubber silicon case so my phone can slide in and out easily.
I bought two of these. They were $10 each with free shipping on eBay. Sorry that I cannot place link, I guess I am not allowed because of my low posts rate. Just do a search for "Windscreen Car Mount for Samsung i9000 Galaxy S". Very stable in the car and phone will not slip out.

DIY Flip-case

If you buy a rear cover cradle type case it's pretty easy (maybe) to glue some covering and include a flap.

How does the finish look like?
hand made cases is always good u just need time to finish it all . thats why people prefer buying one than making one
thanks look cool but the time invested seems a bit much for finding something similar for $4. On the otherhand i am always up for DIY projects and i always thought of doing something similar to this for a case but adding a LED circuit of some sort into it. That case would def not be found anywhere else.
Time investment isn't a consideration for people intelligent enough to have thrown away their TV sets. <snicker> <snicker> Some folk prefer to spend such time doing hobby stuff like leather carving, RC model building, glass blowing, pottery, sewing, computer graphics, writing, reading, and so on and so forth.
Adding LED or LCD to a case might be fun. I can't imagine what I would hook them up to though. As indicator lights they would be redundant. Maybe as text scrollers they might be interesting. They sure would add a lot of bulk for sure! I can't really fathom any use for it. <shrug>
Such a thing like this doesn't have to be made from leather. I chose leather because I wanted to recap/learn about leather carving but gluing cuts from an old pair of Levis onto some hard plastic or cardboard for the front and onto a cheap-o back shell-case for the back could work. Furs too! I have a few faun skins (pelts) that I was thinking about using for my Galaxy Note. And also the covering doesn't need to incorporate a flip cover front part. Just the back would do. And in that case starting out with a white one and spray-painting or air-brushing could produce some interesting results! Using sculpey and sculpey-like products on a flat surface is easy and fun too!
Here's a progress update on mine. This is from about a week ago. The next step will be finishing the edges a bit and adding an inner surface which will be hard like a door and covered with padded microcloth.

NomNom, advice? As in "do not swallow!" or the likes? I dunno. Some phone manufacturer designs incorporate an antenna in the rear cover. So if the case you select replaces that cover, make sure it has the antenna connections.

DIY- Wireless Charging Car Mount

I didn't want to spend big money on a wireless charging car mount, so I got creative. The project takes very little time and involves the following items:
-Wireless Charger: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IQTGY2A/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1
-Microsuction Tape: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ITX9OU2/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (EDIT: Suggest using different micro-suction tape. This product doesn't work for extended use)
-Docking system: http://smile.amazon.com/Camera-Suction-Tripod-Holder-Screen/dp/B007E4PUT6/ref=pd_bxgy_p_img_y
-And any sort of epoxy, super-glue, anything that forms a strong bond.
Remove the screw from the camera mount and glue it to the underside of the puck-charger, put micro-suction tape on the top side that faces the phone, wait for the stuff to dry, and you're done.

}
Finished Product
Close up of the micro-suction used to hold the phone
Piece that holds it to mount. Used epoxy to keep it in place
Another view of the back
Note: This material only sticks to glossy surfaces. I was disappointed when it didn't stick to my Distronics case for my S4A, but all I did to remedy this was throw a piece of tape on the back of my phone, and voila! It sticks perfectly.
I plan on putting some clear tape on the back to pretty it up a bit, but for now it just doesn't bother me enough. So far I've only got to use it a few times, but it works amazing. It works best if it's directly on the back cover of your phone, for those of you that don't use cases. One downside to the micro-suction also is it does become dirty, and doesn't work as good. It is really easy to clean though, just take a piece of tape, stick it to it, and peel it off. Good as new, and it's supposed to never lose it's micro-suction ability. Hope it works good for you!
I actually used these two docking systems and put them together:
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00585CLVS/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D7KGLF8/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Since I had them laying around anyway, but there are much cheaper ways to make this possible. Good luck!

I probably spent about $50 total, but I already had most of the pieces lying around anyway. There may be some cheaper micro-suction tape around online somewhere, but I went with the stuff on Amazon, cause I'm an Amazon junkie.. haha. I tried it on a new case:
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GZSPQF0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and holy crap it sticks good!
Looks great, wish I had the patience to make something like this lol!
Very simple solution, looks nice! Post a picture of your phone with the clear tape please.
Does the battery level still goes up while using navigation?
I'm afraid you've put a little bit of distance between the two coils with that case.
Update
So, after using this for a few weeks the micro-suction is failing. I would suggest shopping around for a better one. Even after using tape to refresh it, it just won't hold my S4 Active anymore. I am currently back at the drawing board to find an alternative, and will update when I find something good.
I am too lazy to post a picture of my case with clear tape on it. I actually had some awesome ESD tape on it for a couple weeks, up til today.
And yes, this did continue to charge my phone even with the GPS and music streaming through Bluetooth in my vehicle. This particular charging pad is actually advertised to work good while plugged into a computer USB as well. Works great.
