[Q] Scratched Camera EVO - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Curious to know what solutions if any there are for this issue.
The lense cover on my EVO is pretty scratched up, any solutions to get it clear again? I already tried a little of the compound from my headlight lens restore kit, and that helped some, but its still pretty blurry.
Can the Sprint stores replace it? I also saw some posts in the HTC Desire forum where they used Sapphire glass to replace it, but theirs is built into the cover, ours isn't

I used to be a tech for Sprint and yes they can replace it, in fact its extremely easy to fix. The lens isnt even a lens, its just part of the back housing. If you have insurance it should be free (if the charge you, tell them you know better.) If you dont have insurance you can pay them $35 and they can replace it or you can buy a back housing from ebay for about $10. Its very easy to do but you will need a T4 screwdriver which can be purchased for a couple bucks at any hardware store.

Hmm, eBay solution sounds much better, already have the T4. Any disassembly how-to's anywhere that I should know about?

http://www.ifixit.com/blog/blog/2010/06/01/htc-evo-4g-teardown/
He says he used a T5, but I double checked and my takes a T4. Its super easy but the screws can strip easy so take your time on them.
Hope this helps. Feel free to PM if you have questions and thanks are appreciated!

You can purchase the lense cover on eBay for about $7. It's only held on by a small ring of adhesive. I had to replace mine a few months ago.
Simply remove the battery cover and use a small precision flat head screw driver or razor blade to pry off the scratched lense cover.

Not trying to bash just making an observation...that seems like a lot of work to save $3, totally just my opinion.

does your scratched cover actually cause issues with picture taking? I've got 1 really easy to see scratch on mine when looking at it but none of my pictures ever appear to be affected.

I'd agree, watching that teardown video your solution seems much simpler. Just bought a new back housing for $9 on eBay.

Well that was easy. $9 solution for the win! Pictures are nice and clear now...sample.

I know there's another post on this topic. I don't think it was really liked. A search will turn it up, I'm on my mobile and can't find it.

Searching for YOU sponsored from me personally. don't see a lot of negative here nor did i see someone showing close pictures of the white one either. I fit it in my pocket and don't want to add any bulk to my phone so personally skins suit me! As well as a lot of others.
Someone could get a clear case if the wanted and it will fit right over...
My 2 Cents
I think that looks sweet. Thinking about ordering one
That's extreme! Seems very portal-esc
If I was any good at applying these things I'd be down.
What area are you from??
very nice and clean!
i bet the texture is awesome.
I love the way it looks, how long has it been on? I'd like to know how well they hold up, they're kind of pricey and I've heard complaints about the corners peeling up. Keep us up to date on how it holds up.
I covered my KLR650 motorcycle in carbon print vinyl like this. It withstood six months of gnarly weather, dust and offroad.
Before I finally peeled it off, my bike looked like it was totalled. However, the paint underneath was flawless.
You can get a good result if you are slow and methodical. if not, it won't look so great.
Hmm, I ordered a roll of this stuff from Ebay and got it in. Looks really slick and I covered a few things to practice. But I think I need a good pattern for the Thunderbolt. Anyone have anything? Even another skin and a scanner?
Would greatly appreciate it and be willing to send someone a big enough piece for a couple of these if we can get a pattern going.
I can even send people chunks to make skins if they are willing to cover a couple bucks in shipping.
Do you think it offers much protection other than from surface scratches? Say from falls to the floor or concrete? Doesn't from the pictures and manufacturer's description.

it's just a sticker so I highly doubt it does anything other than prevent some scratches.
Does look cool. How charred up does it look then its removed? That's always my worry with them
It removed no issues. I took it off so I can recut a new skin with better cleaner edges and there is no resides at all.
I bought a roll of black off Ebay, so I cut my own skin. I wish I had a good pattern.
Looks pretty cool in a something different kind of way, also storm-troopery. I personally wouldn't cover the kickstand, though.
thumbs up, i'm really liking this

Gelaskins?

Does anyone have one of these for the Tab 10.1? If so, how is the coverage on it and are you happy w/ it? I've seen some posts about phones, but Want to know if the sides of the tab are protected enough and if the screen portion is any good on a tablet?
check pictures of it on an ipad or any other tablet, i believe the result is the same.

I looked at pics of the Pad and the corners are cut out. I don't like that at all. The pics on their site are photoshopped and you can't tell anything from that.
I just got mine today from amazon. Check the last page in the mega case thread. I like it. Anything will add some amount of weight/thickness. This one fits really well. I'm keeping it.

I just got mine today and I'm extremely satisfied with it so far.
The fit is absolutely perfect from edge to edge, on all the corners, and around the camera and flash. I'm actually astounded that they managed to get the measurements so perfect; it covers the entire back without overlapping the little gap between the back panel and the trim around the edge of the device.
It also adds a little bit more of a grippy feel to the back, even moreso than the metallic grey back (which is what I have), so it feels like it will be a little easier to hang onto the Tab and not drop it.
However, you're not going to find any protection for the edges with the Gelaskin, and the front piece will not protect your screen either; it simply covers the bezel around the screen. I didn't apply the front piece because I felt like it would be more distracting than the black bezel and it also won't line up with the Gelaskins wallpaper if you rotate the Tab. But if you wanted to apply the front piece, it does have cut-outs for the front-facing camera and the ambient light sensor.
If you're looking for more complete coverage you should definitely consider something else. Personally, I just wanted something that would look nice and protect the back side from scratches when I put the Tab down on a surface, and for that purpose the Gelaskin is perfect. It also adds no bulk and I bet it would easily fit inside of a case if you wanted to do something like Gelaskin on the back + transparent TPU case and maybe a screen protector for more complete protection. At that point the Gelaskin would just be there for looks, though.
Here's a couple photos of mine:
The photo of the camera/flash makes it look like the skin is not perfectly aligned around the flash, but this is just because of the angle at which I took the photo. It's actually aligned just as perfectly as it is around the camera.
If anyone has any questions I'd be happy to answer them.
If people are buying from the gelaskins.com website, then they should put in 500PXSKINS and save 15%. I am debating if I should get one.
I just saw these on the net and came here to see if anybody had gotten one. I really like the idea of these. Perhaps even a custom one as none of the models available is tacky and loud enough for my tastes. Oh, the possibilities.
Very much grateful for the pics and reviews. I think ill bite. I like to here things like the fit is so good I don't know how they did it. Thanks again.

Broke back camera glass cover, after replacement camera won't focus UPDATE: fixed!

My issue is the title. The back glass (or whatever material) cover over the camera broke somehow (I really dont know how, I took it out of my pocket and it was broken!) while I was on vacation last week. I just now received a replacement of the entire plastic piece and glass cover that you see when removing the battery cover. It fit perfectly, and looks quite nice, however my camera is now unable to focus. I actually noticed this same issue after only removing the plastic cover and having the camera bare (without the glass cover at all). I have cleaned the lens fairly well with a nice cloth (one that I got with my eyeglasses and I have only ever used on my eyeglasses, that also stays away in a little sleeve), but that doesn't seem to have made any difference.
I found a few threads on this issue searching around. Some of which people said that the cover was required for focusing to work, and some that said it still didn't work after replacment. It appears I am suffering from the latter. Unfortunately, there were no solutions posted for that further problem besides "return it to samsung".
My phone is well out of warranty, and I would rather just try and repair it myself or just sell it off for parts and get a new phone.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here had an opinion as to why this issue may be occurring, and if anyone had experience fixing or at least ideas on what may be done to solve this issue. My random theory was that some piece of the broken glass fell into the lens module and has somehow restricted functionality of the lens, thus resulting in the failure to focus. In this case, it seems my best option is to drop $30 for a replacement camera module and perform that replacement. I was looking to see if anyone had any success stories regarding that job, or perhaps a simpler route I may be able to take.
Thanks in advance!
This is of interest to me also. I ordered a replacement lens cover from Ebay and it came in; what I have is the silver and black "frame" and a black circle with what appears to be the actual lens cover glass. For one thing, if it's going to ruin focus I won't do this. For another, the black circle appears to fit on the outside of the silver and black "frame" and doesn't appear to stick to it in any way. Has anyone performed this repair and have any suggestions?
The replacement I ordered came in the same way you mentioned, the plastic frame and then actual glass cover, except in mine the glass cover has an adhesive strip pre-applied in a ring. If yours doesn't, I suppose you should use something like a thin amount of glue or double sided tape.
I actually tested my camera first without the frame and cover at all before I even got the replacement (I simply removed the broken one as it wasn't providing any protection anyway), and found that at that time I wasn't able to focus. I put some blue masking tape over the lens to shield it until the replacement part arrived.
I actually found a replacement camera module on ebay for only about $15, so I've ordered that and will attempt the repair when it arrives. I'll update this thread with the result of that effort.
Back with an update.
I received the replacement camera module today. After following a simple guide I googled for, I managed to replace it. (fairly painless process really...)
As for the result....

Great success! The overall repair cost was only ~$20. ($5 for glass cover, $15 for camera module) If anyone else finds this thread, just ensure you get the "i747" supported part!

Open it again. At this point no one here can tell you what exactly went wrong. May be you forgot to remove the plastic peel that comes with the new lenses. By the way, why did you do it all yourself ? HTC could have replaced it for no charge ! All I suggest is to open the device again, and check whether you removed the plastic peel for both the lenses. Without closing the rear housing/panel, launch the camera app and check whether the issue persists. 220 fahrenheit is okay for a short timeframe. Can you send some snaps of your device along with the camera module ? It would be helpful to the people who visit the thread. After all this fails, try flashing the stock rom if you're running a custom rom. :good:

HTC said since i HTC dev unlocked no go and it would cost 130+ and i would have my soff removed. So i said screw that and got the housing and the grills. I am pretty sure the plastic was removed as the camera app now shutters and glitches out as it never did that before and i doubt a plastic color lense would cause that. I will detail pics when i crack it open again to check if i just might ave pulled back the cameras connection cable just looked on ebay 25 bucks for a new oem i may snag it. The front cam works fine i just should have used a micro cloth to polish the old one vs dremel ha my lesson

Cases will not protect the large camera lens from getting scratched. They only prevent shattering, and only if the case is thick enough to extend beyond the camera lense. Even with a thick case, the lense could still easily be scratched since it is only plastic and not Gorilla Glass like the screen. What you said is not helpful to many people.
The point of my post was this:
This phone comes with a camera lense protector pre-installed. Whether the user wants to remove that or not is up to them, but whether it was removed regrettably, or kept attached and worn down over time, some people will need to replace the protector for some reason or another. This is the only lense protector I've seen so far, and I only came across it by complete accident and thought I would share it with my fellow V20 users.

Dude thanks I will be getting these .. yea a case offers some protection from impact but not sand or dust scratching them .. these make that a non issue
Got these to protect while using a thin case. They installed quick and work great without distorting picture quality.

Did you have the factory screen protector installed also with these or does it not fit with the factory screen protector on the camera?
Sent from my VS995 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I'm not sure what the factory protector is. I ended up sending these back because some landscape photos I took looked washed out some, plus I swapped my thinner leather case for the Pierre Cardin that protects the lenses. When I took them off, I noticed the actual lens was recessed some into the plastic covering over the whole assembly. I'm assuming that maybe that is the factory protection? If so, it's a great idea because it's recessed enough to keep the actual lens from touching anything when laying the phone down.
But... is it only 2 circles and not the whole glass? ... LOLi no wonder it has 3 stars on amazon. Any object could hit anywhere else outside those 2 circles and the glass would still break... But im glad to say that after soooo many drops (really hard drops including street and a wall by accident), my phone still looks brand new and no crack on the camera LOL (yes i do have a poetic revolution cover). im starting to believe that only a percentage of the sales came with that defective glass because some people said that they were doing nothing that could affect the glass and all of the sudden it just broke on them. and... well that hasnt happened to me and i bought it on september (exchanged for a new one) and arrived on december. But if the glass were to break on me i would just buy it on ebay or amazon and not just this 2 pitiful circles lol.

i assume they come with the same plastic from factory and so the best option is to leave it on. (i havent remove my plastic yet)
The supplied protector only protects the boarder, the out camera lens, to use these lens protector, you need to default one's, with time these protector will fall off if the default one has been removed as the small size will not hold it in place.
I have these on my phone from two weeks after I got my phone on release date, the reason is that I have plenty of these, but only for the large camera, had to get some smaller ones for the wide angle lens.
I have them on up to now, and they have been perfect.
