You need to flash a recovery(search the development thread for clockworkmod recovery)
Flash this recovery via fastboot(search the whole forum for a guide)
And then flash a ROM(or other things) of your choice via the recovery menu.
Hope this helps
Personally, I downgraded by flashing a stock 2.1 RUU, then used unrevoked 3.2 to root it and install clockworkmod.
Then just flashed a cyanogen nightly (#57). Although you can choose whatever rom you want.
I have tried with unrevoked 3 to root the phone, but at some point i got the following message:
Validation error: Backup CID is missing
any idea how to fix that?

When i flash unrevoked 2.2 after s-off and downgrade to 2.1 is had the same problem. I don't know why but unrevoked 3.14 worked fine. For me newer is not always better.

once S-OFF, downgrading and then rooting is a lengthier process. As already stated in the post #2, after S-OFF just flash a recovery from the fast boot menu and thats all ur phone is rooted.
get the PC49IMG.ZIP file and the process from here. (most painless and secure algorithm)

Alright. I think I'm gonna get my device S-OFF soon...
So all I have to do is
1. Flash to 2.1 RUU
2. Flash a recovery via fastboot
3. Flash a new ROM
That is all right?

If you are going for Step 2, there is no need for Step 1. Just flash a recovery via Fastboot, and you are good to go with Custom ROMs, even on the updated HBoot.

I've been reading alot about this but I don't geddit. Everyone says that with hboot 1.01.0002 you can't get s-off without using the xtc clip. Are you saying you just downgraded to Android 2.1 then flashed a custom ROM

What you have heard is false. HBoot 1.01x requires XTC Clip to get S-OFF, and, only then can it be downgraded and rooted.

If i used XTC clip to S-OFF a wildfire, is it then possible to restore a rooted ROM? Or do i need to root the phone, then when i load any ROM it is rooted, because root is at a lower level?
Is root access something which is stored in the operating system or some lower level?

Root is given by the app called Superuser. Just as in linux, every program that wants to do something that needs root rights, has to ask for it. In android that permission is "tunneld" by the superuser, which asks you if you want to grant an app root access, and then gives it to that app with your permission. But of course, the only way that superuser can grant root access, is when it is propperly installed, and has some files in the /system folder. Which is not possible without root permissions
So: if you are s-off, you can flash a recovery image trough fastboot (working with unrevoked gives you the custom recovery right away) by the adb command "flastboot flash recovery " (google for "cyanogenmod wiki flastboot" if you are planning it, it is really nice explaned). Trough that recovery you can apply some kind of an "update.zip", which installes the right superuserfiles on your system anx changes nothing else. Notice me if you want those files, I know where to find them here on xda.
From that moment on, when an app asks for root permission, you get a popup from the superuser app to ask if you really want to grant that app such permissions or not: if yes, the app has root access now!
This is all based on my experience with the stock ROM, don't know how the process works in CM or wildpuzzle.
Erwin
Edit: and if you want to delete or modify rom specific things (like htc stock app), you can connect your phone to your computer, mount your system as read/write by the command "adb remount" and then delete it trough adb commands. No need to go trough recovery for this.
Perhaps the same is possible if you have a file manager that can handle rooted phones, but not sure about that.

Don't know properly but let me try to answer,
u can only apply update.zip on recovery if they are signed by htc as its s-on and no one is still came with root for hboot 1.01.x its hardly locked so sign by htc for that update.zip is needed.
In simple, Not possible unless signed by htc...

talking about wildfire with S-ON here....
S-ON actually checks the update files whether they are signed by htc or not, and installs only the signed ones.
As ur hboot is 1.01 with S-ON, u must be on official froyo. In that case, u shouldn't be having another update file signed by htc presently. So u will be getting the error "Signature Verification Failed".
Why dont u try that as there is no harm in doing so. First copy ur update.zip file to the root of the sd card. then reboot into hboot menu and select recovery. U will see a red triangle. Now press the volume up + power key. There u will find the option to install update. So try it and check the error. And AFAIK, it is almost impossible to spoof the signature of htc.
If u have enough time, try this one also (only on ur wildfire with hboot 1.01 and S-ON). Get the official froyo ota update of ur region. It will be a zip file signed by htc. Put that zip file in the root of the memory card and rename the zip file to "update.zip" . Then go to recovery and try to install this. It will be installed because it is signed by htc (and moreover it is not a downgraded one).
Hi bharat, I am trying to do an OTA manually the version released last in India.
I got the following error, with "status 7". I was already having Froyo from an RUU update that I did, is that the reason for getting the error "Status 7"

Sorry, don't know about that "status 7" error.
Try to give more details and u might get answer frm someone. hboot version (0.80 or 1.01.0001 or 1.01.0002), S-ON or S-OFF (expecting s-on), Region of phone manufacture, Which froyo ruu u have used.
EDIT: Just googled the "status 7" error. Seems like it was the problem with rooted phone. So if ur phone is rooted, i think u will have to unroot ur phone first for the OTA update to work. And be aware of that OTA update will make ur phone unrootable (as now)
[im expecting u have used a rooted froyo rom (a zip file not an exe file)]

flash your own recovery and skip that part,

So, this is an "easy" way to S-OFF my Desire? (Yes, I'm a noob and afraid of bricking my phone since I, you know, need it to do phone stuff )
My device is rooted, running a custom recovery and MIUI, but it isn't S-OFF'd yet.
I've read that Android Flasher needs S-OFF so the bootscreen etc can be modified, but can I use Android Flasher to flash a custom recovery with an S-ON device?
Unrevoked wouldn't flash the 4EXTRecovery img I just want to make sure I can use Android Flasher instead without going through the S-OFF procedure before.
Thanks, haven't got round to S-off yet as the previous methods seemed somewhat daunting.

Agree with above quote.
Easy to use, once s-off just use any recovery. I used 4Ext 2.1.3. Just put the Pblahblahblah.img on your sd card and install through fastboot.

Best is to flash the recovery before s-off with revolutionary so you can skip that part.
as for some the recovery doesn't work in revolutionary
done in a couple of seconds.
and you don't need to use vmware or a bootable cd or usb.
I've used it. Dead easy, and the phone remained S-OFF after I PB99IMG'd it to the official GB build.
I had modified the .zip a little though, removed radio and recovery (already had newer radio and left CWM so I could root easily).

Sure: http://www.mediafire.com/file/m16ypyymn5x1spn/PB99IMG.zip
Contains no radio or recovery. Does contain HBOOT, but Revolutionary doesn't get overwritten by it.
I would like to S-OFF my Desire and want to know if either Revolutionary or Alpharev flash their own recovery in addition to doing S-OFF?
I already rooted my Desire a couple months ago with unrevoked3 and this put on Clockworkmod (unsure what version) in addition as well, but I'm happy with how it works and don't need it replaced I guess.
Which one should I use? Do I get a choice to do S-OFF only and skip replacing the recovery?

Yes I'm running a custom ROM I'll try a Froyo-based ROM and see if that helps.
It's a shame that Revolutionary doesn't support this version of HBOOT, is there any way of 'tricking' Revolutionary to S-OFF the 0.75 HBOOT?

You can always update bootloader... if you have a goldcard then put the attached file in the root of your sd-card, and then boot into bootloader and wait for it do do it's thing.. when it prompts you select yes. This will update your bootloader to version 0.93.1002
You shouldn't lose any data, but do make a backup of the ROM in recovery in case you get a bootloop.
Then run Revolutionary.

I downloaded the file and put it on the root sdcard... Bootloader seemed to just skip over the file though.
Do I need to change the text file in the zip to my CID or anything else? It doesn't like it
you need a goldcard, so it ignores the CID.. or actually.. what network are you on?
EDIT: Just noticed lol
Wait I'm downloading a Telstra RUU and I'll give you a new PB99IMG
try this. If not, then you can always use the RUU to do a full update, and then S-OFF and flash a custom ROM.
Thanks I'll give it a try.
I have four microSD cards at home and I've tried gold carding all of them... I don't know how successful I was cos I couldn't do what I wanted on the Desire HD

try the goldcard tutorial I posted.
Okay, well I'm gonna get to sleep now but I'll give you some advice before you go.
If you can't update the bootloader with that, I'd suggest backing up your ROM (if you havent done so already), flashing the RUU to bring it up to the latest bootloader version, and then using revolutionary.
Once you've S-OFF'd with revo. Use android flasher to flash recovery (Note: your backup will not work if you do not flash the same version of recovery) and then do a full wipe and flash a ROM of your choice.
Would you happen to know where I can get the original Telstra RUU from? I think that might be my best bet.
Thanks for your help!

Thanks - this looks like it worked now HBOOT 0.93.0001, running revolutionary now.
Is there any benefit in upgrading HBOOT at all? What does 1.02.0001 offer?
Hboot 1.xxxx is the stock hboot for gingerbread. So it offers you nothing. By flashing a hboot like cm7 (most roms fit in this hboot), you get much more space for installing apps, because its /data partition is much bigger.

I unrooted it by flashing RUU ROM from shipedroms by PB99IMG.zip. Everything was ok but system failed (fail-pu). I tryed it again and it wroted "invalid cid".

I got back my warranty repaired Desire the other day with this configuration. Unrevoked doesn't work, I can only assume because of the PVT4, I already had a gold card which had helped root several phones but this didn't help.
In the end the only resort was to S-off using revolutionary.io, no gold card required.
Once you are s-offed (and the process can add a recovery) you can boot into recovery and flash a downloaded rom.
Ok we have gold card but all tutorials for s-off need functional rom
Any idea?
i could not root it by revolutionary because i dont have system. I have only access to bootloader with s-on, i need some procedure to root it without system.

S-off does not require a functional rom. Simply go to revoltionary.io and download their beta tool and get a key to use it.
Whatever you've been reading about instructions requiring a rom is incorrect.
