It's a good start I suppose. Here are some questions:
Does this change how users can report posts/users? Or is it still the troublesome bulky way of having to PM your forum mods and hope for the best? Sometimes days between reports and action?
Will we see more moderator involvement in the community, or will it continue to be a ghostland unless someone flashes the bat-signal for help? (I can only speak of EVO 4G forums).
In short: What should the average joe user who is, say, frustrated with [Q] in development for example, see in the upcoming days/weeks?
Hopefully this can stay on-topic

It isn't necessarily a matter of days or weeks of when the new report system/mod involvement will roll out. The report system is being reworked to accommodate the mods and users alike. The old way was only beneficial to the users and create hassle for the mod team. This made it more difficult to deal with reports instead of simpler. The report system was made that way in the first place because, at the time, it was the right way to do it. As the user base exploded here, it became apparent that this was no longer viable.
The old report system dumped all reports into a massive pile and made it difficult to get to the important ones that needed immediate attention. This is why you now need to PM mods to address moving threads. That isn't an important issue as much as flaming, kanging, or warez is.
There is a new system in the works to address the issues that the old system raised as well as make it simpler for users to report posts. You'll just need to be patient while the kinks are worked out. Don't worry, good things come to those who wait.
As far as mod involvement, this is where the new [revised] site direction comes in. It's no longer an act of congress to ban or discipline someone. If a user does something retarded, he will be punished. It's that simple. However, not every mod can be in every place at once. That's the whole reason we have a report function. Especially if you see a forum needs deep cleaning, you should PM the forum mod first. If that doesn't work, PM any senior mod with your problem. There is also a Requests from the users to the mods and admins sticky thread here that you can utilize.
All in all, there are good things on the way. We just need to be patient while the kinks are worked out.
Even if I understand and respect the goal to provide better methods and tools for the admins and mods of this forums, I'd like to ask the question:

In colloquial English, an "Iron Fist" refers to the authority exerted by a powerful, unforgiving governing figure, extended variously to public or private life, used to describe a person who operates under strictly authoritarian principles. Ex. "Josef Stalin ruled the USSR with an iron fist" ...

They could have called it the "Turd Ferguson Project" for all I care. The name isn't important. However, this one being the Iron Fist that is set to unleash blows to those who think it's ok to use this site as their personal dumping ground seems fair to me.

Having been a member of the X10 and now Arc forums since joining I welcome "Iron fist", and still believe there should be a week limit when you first join before you're allowed to post anything because that way it would encourage people to search more, along with having to actually read threads where the answer being looked for has been answered a thousand times already. In regards to githubs point, I'd like to see more of that too in the Arc section.
ALL moderators imo should 1. Actually own the phone of the forum they are moderating and 2. Be able to dedicate a certain amount of time each day to the forum, which might help with keeping the forums clean because they have an interest and a duty to keep on top of things.

Spot on. Our goal has been to assign mods to device forums that apply to them. When possible, we attempt to assign a few mods to each device forums such that time zone overlap occurs.
Some of the challenges we often encounter are:
Infrequent mod attendance; this is a volunteer (aka unpaid) role after all
Mods who switch to a new device at some point before a replacement mod is assigned - i.e. they now manage several forums
Obtaining quality mod candidates
Mods who decide to retire

The "Allan Parson Project" seems a more befitting name
In reference to reporting any problem post/member, what I've been doing lately is keeping one of my Chrome tabs with the Forum leader List open.
If I encounter a problem post/flame, I create my pm with the links to the post/thread, my reason for reporting it and if the section does not have a mod to send it to, or if i think it needs immediate attention, I then refresh that Forum Leader list to see who is on at the moment and send out the pm to the mod. 9 out of 10, they get it within moments and take care of it, unless they log off by the time the pm is sent out. (or if they deem it not necessary to report).
There are times that even if a section has a mod assigned to it, some issues need to be taken care of immediately before it escalates into a much bigger problem and that is why I'm do the method above until the new reporting system takes effect.

Very good point. I try to only involve my forum mods, but I like your idea too. Depending on the issue sometimes I'll PM a few mods that I have known in the past to be pretty quick to take action and/or helpful overall.
I won't name any names, but one of them posted in here *cough* Thanks!
Hopefully Iron Fist is more like Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury!
Hopefully with less people making useless threads etc, the older members might also chill out a little.

Unfortunately there are some "older" members that are causing just as much if not more trouble than their newer counterparts.
So 4 mods posted after my post here...

Id like to respond to this as I'm currently moderating the Arc section.
I do not own the device but to be honest I spend far more time in the forumsi moderate than in the forums for devices I own.
Now, atm you may be thinking, "aye right, the place is a s×××hole"
You may be right as I haven't been around much in the past few days.
However under "normal" real life circumstances. All my forums are swept at least once a day. If I should miss anything then please do not hesitate to PM me.....
I make every effort to close/delete/m ove misplaced or duplicate threads but obv. some do get missed, simply because I cannot read every thread. Again, in such a situation or if you just want to discuss the way the section is moderated then please do PM me and let me know.....
I hope that addresses some of your concerns.

Quit censoring the forums. You are a "moderator" not a "censor".
Closing the thread when it was a discussion about developers and moderators on XDA in the "General" section is not right. Just because you as a moderator are tired of reading all the good points about you and your heavy-handed tactics doesn't give you the right to "censor" the forums. You are a "moderator", not a "censor".
When you start censoring posts/threads that you don't agree with, you have gone way beyond your "moderator" duties and are now infringing on any user's rights to speak freely.

Agree, i was just thinking that. Who is the forum experience mod?
wow and I was about to write up a thread calling Jerdog out for exactly as you said, he gives his excuse then closes the thread while it is clearly open and still booming. like "haha I get the last word..."
I agree with you.

anyways, so StrongSteve puts something together from many parts, but that is not allowed. We must do it ourselves. Should of just put a guide out there steve
Jerdog, you can call the work StrongSteve whatever you want but when it involves work that most of us could not do ourselves no matter what section he puts it in, I call that development.
If rules that are set up does not call that or allow it as development in the development section, then it is the rules that need changed. As much as the work is appreciated, not many people will go through a 20 page guideline on how to do what he did in the theme section.
ok guys.. I really have to call Jerdog out on this..
He keeps referring to dexopt-wrapper as a "script"
It is a binary or a "tool"
How does such bonified ignorance become a "recognized developer"
??
Thanks again.

I'm on Strongsteve's side. We've heard both stories in the previous thread as it wasn't censored, but locked. This thread was made for the sole purpose of flaming Jerdog. It's just not right.
Hopefully, as Jerdog stated, this gets worked out through private discussion between them.
I posted the original Open Letter. This is first chance I have had to look things over since this morning. Not surprised the thread was moved. I'm appalled it was closed. I just sent jerdog a PM asking for an explanation. We'll see what happens.
I cannot for the life of me understand the logic (or lack thereof) behind killing off this ROM, theme, project, discussion.
strongsteve, are you going to put your work up anywhere else. if so, can you let us know.
I am using your ROM and it is best one out there . Much appreciated no matter what the mods say. Thanks

maybe, but I think trying to keep the previous thread going was more the reason. If the other thread was not locked, discussion would continue there. And IMO writing a book sized defense reply (as Jerdog did) then immediately locking it so details of what he said could not be discussed is censorship. I mean look, someone opens a new thread and you claim it something other than genuine continuation of the first thread, so in effect Jerdog altered the degree of trust and dialogue hence censorship.
Nothing against you as I do understand what you said, just making a point
i would suggest PM'ing the forum admin or the forum experience mod to communicate any issues.
I think locking a thread to prevent further discussion is what peeves people off.
The discussion was a fairly civil discussion of what constitutes a "Themed ROM" and a "Developer ROM". By the definition put forth ALL roms that are in the Development section are "Themed ROMs". Even ptfdmedic pointed out that his ROM by the definition is a "Themed ROM".
This thread is probably going to be locked/closed/moved anyways. If anyone wants to complain to XDA about jerdog, they're welcome to PM the "User Experience Admin" svetius. His profile is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=2235607
Sprint just offered me today (after 100's of phone calls) to replace my Epic Touch with a different phone because of LOS issues, hopefully whichever phone I decide on will have a healthy dev environment like the Epic Touch has been.

agreed, it appears that any discussion regardless of temperament is not permitted. I would also submit that if I were Strongsteve, i wouldn't exactly be in a PM/discussion/compromise type of mindset either. It appears that there is a total lack of comprehension from the MOD

I would think that we would be encouraging development for this phone and not splitting hairs on it, no matter who is right and who is wrong. I mean he (jerdog) just couldn't just leave it alone? Really? Come on.
i don't fault XDA making money and trying to keep the lights on. Especially when XDA the business is not always aligned with XDA the forums, however clearly this instance clearly is not a conflict of the two. What i don't really agree with is the decision of ONE mod in this forum.

The only way!!!
Either stop coming to this site...aka boycott; Or get other devs to stop supporting this site. Either will result in revenue loss for XDA and make them think about what they are doing.
That's all you can do, once the advertisers pull out, they lose money that I am sure they don't share with developers who are the sole reason we com here in the first place.
Start hitting up all the devs and see if they will move thier work elsewhere, then we go there and XDA will have to acknowledge or fail.

I wrote the experience mod and said the exact same thing.
i got my phone rooted and was excited to flash an ICS rom on it following this tutorial:
[cant post URL]
however after flashing it the phone no longer starts at all. i held the power button along with a combination of other buttons, i took out the sd card, battery, both and tried starting the phone but it simply wouldn't power up.
any suggestions?
I guess its a,hard brick coz you flashed a rom that wasn't for your phone

what can i do as a result of this, if anything at all? googling it but have come up fruitless thus far
Get a warranty replacement. Go to the store and just make up a BS story and that now it won't start. Don't mention button combinations, they might catch on to you. Also it probably was an incorrect rom as we don't have ics yet....not a fully functional one that is

Take it to tmobil. be like, "uhh... I woke up and the phone wouldnt turn on." then tell them you hope their customer service is less defective than the devices they sell.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
As a rule, I'd never flash anything that wasn't located in this forum's rom subsection. Just having the Snapdragon instead of Exynos is going to be what sets the phone away from all the other custom rom builds of the 'similar' devices.
The chipsets are different enough that anything that isn't SPECIFICALLY for the SGH-T989 is probably going to brick the phone. Sucks that the phones don't use a unified set of architecture, but that's how things are.

Not to mention when browsing this site on my phone, the two dedicated subs are no where near each other. Nor is there any sticky in either sub as a head's up to noobs just like me. I just did this to my phone this past Saturday. Even used "search" to build my own jig. Unfortunately, this does "hard brick" our phones. My replacement should be arriving tomorrow.

I thought XDA was about a whole lot of people who shared the same intrests, android ,windows or whatever. When are all you better than him, we were all noobs at one point and probably bricked a device or two thats how we learn! Lay off the guy all he wants is help.
Its amazing how many people on this forum (devs included) are willing to jump all over someone for asking a question. I'm sure at one point or another none of you knew jack about what you were doing so what did you do? Tried to learn like everyone else i would I assume... but gauging from the responses the OP got most of you are prodigies. Now i understand why noone wants to dev for our devices (skyrocket inc), you guys tend to drive them all away.
Try and put yourselves in other peoples shoes before you jump all over them and call them out for making a mistake, this is all just my opinion of course and your free to do as you wish, but a small amount of understanding goes a long way.
ps: yes this was my first post, i've been a long time lurker though and i know my way around the android system. So, before you berate me for being a NOOB stop and ask yourselves if you really know more then the next guy... /rant

Some of the replies in this thread are just disgusting. Yes, the OP didn't do his research and it was his own fault that he bricked his device, and yes, when dealing with such expensive gadgets you should always do some research before flashing anything, but seriously, is having a bunch of people calling him stupid or dumb going to help? Do you really need to make someone feel worse after already bricking a $500 device? The guy's bricked his phone, do you think your post is the thing that's going to remind him to think twice about flashing ROMs next time? It's pathetic that XDA has turned into a place where a newbie asking for help turns into a flame fest just so people can call the OP names to feel better themselves.

I think a lot of people don't take rooting/hacking serious it takes hrs and hrs of reading and understanding not just follow some instructions and your done. Especially now with so many versions of one device with different CPUs. I can't really help a new members unbricking their phones since I probably be in the same position not knowing what to do if I brick my device.
It said it finished the download, it loads the clockwork recovery...
I then select the up[date stuff.... and then it spews this error 7...
any idea's on how to fix this? all the other updates from 4.0 to 4.1 and from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2 with CWM went just fine...

It said it finished the download, it loads the clockwork recovery...
I then select the up[date stuff.... and then it spews this error 7...
any idea's on how to fix this? all the other updates from 4.0 to 4.1 and from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2 with CWM went just fine...

are you flashing the right version rom for your device? all gnex arent the same. you cant flash a gsm rom on a verizon device for example. also, do you have the latest cwm recovery installed? try twrp recovery. also, have you tried just redownloading the rom and flashing again?
instead of wasting that space with your useless post, you could have either helped the op or just not have posted. your post is just as bad a whats the best rom/kernel thread, if not worse.
A useless post in a useless thread is rain in the ocean. Much like this post. However, status 7 error is easily one of the top 5 beat to death questions on xda. So I'd say, in the interest of usefulness, informing OP of his folly is progress towards sparing the community useless threads, whilst posting the actual information, for the ten thousandth time on xda, is actually not encouraging anything. I call 'em like I see 'em.

if we go your route, then just about every issue in human existence has been written about, posted about, talked about, etc. then there is no point in having any kind of forums, from child raising, to car buying, to xda. might as well just shut them all down because all information is available somewhere already, from a library, to the internet, to stone slabs. but we are all imperfect humans, that do imperfect things. just remember, anything that you will ever ask in your lifetime, or have asked, has been asked already and answered. go search for it instead of bugging your family, friends, teachers, government officials, doctors, or stranger that walks past you on the street with any kind of question.

no its not. there have been 10 threads that i know of dealing with the same thing in the past 2 days.
In the grand scheme of things, and an idealized, purely general, take on existence, you're unquestionably correct. But that excellent segue into reclassifying a cited instance aside, this topic hardly warrants profound defense, in the interest of benevolent information exchange. To your response I would say that this is more akin to asking the manufacturer of your product to read you the instructions. A needless request for assistance, for something that has been more than reasonably supplied already.

I see your point, but I see it more like having a 1,000 page instruction manual and asking someone (or the manufacturer) where the info is located in the book (that's the core idea of a Table of Contents). Just because someone has all the data in their possession, doesn't mean they know where to look or could really understand what they're even reading. But asking someone for help with understanding the instruction manual is totally normal (that's the exact idea behind why there are THOUSANDS of tutorial videos on Youtube and tutorial sites in general). So if someone said "Hey, where in this 1,000 page manual is the answer I'm looking for?" An answer of "The info is there in the book, go look for it" would be pointless.
Back on topic, with error 7, just reboot the recovery (preferably using TWRP) and try again.
^^
And, update TWRP. They've fixed it.

any request for assistance is not needless. the op has a need anyways. i am more than happy to assist anyone in need of assistance. if youre not, you dont have to, no one is making you.
I can see you're train of thought, and I can appreciate that. In any case, you're also correct about getting our young status 7's thread back on track lol didn't mean to hijack.

let there be 100 threads started. if someone asks for help, i, and others, are willing to help. if you are not, thats ok, just stfu and ignore the thread.
I understand what the 10-post rule is for - it's to prevent really dumb questions getting in the way of productive work, in addition to preventing spam, obviously. But it can be a big problem for some people.
XDA is pretty much the only forum out there regarding the jailbreak for Windows RT. I'm working on some stuff, including a newly improved jailbreak, but I have no way to talk about it in these forums due to the 10-post rule. I'm a competent programmer who has been reverse engineering for many of her programming years, but can't find anyone to talk to about it. It's clear that I can make some contribution to the RT jailbreak community, as small as it is.
As for trying to get to 10 posts, how can I do that? I have an iPhone, not an Android. I don't know anything at all about Android jailbreaking or flashing, nor would I have any questions to ask about it. The forums I can post to don't really talk about anything outside of Android devices.
By the way, I ported the open source Windows debug tool Process Hacker to Windows RT. Of course, the Process Hacker forum on SourceForge has forced moderation, and apparently their mods haven't been online in a week, so my posts from this weekend haven't showed up yet. Similar situation to here, I guess, except for a different cause.
As for why I'm posting this, well, this is post number 4 out of 10...
You could try pm'ing a senior mod stating and proving that you are a dev and they might lift that restriction off you. But i don't know how long they might take to process that.
Just go to offtopic forum and post anything you want
Hit thanks if I have helped

A lot of us understand the issue you are posing here. I'm a Windows programmer, but I still had to follow the 10 post rule too. All of us did. There is a forum somewhere, lord knows there are plenty here, where you can post to help someone else out. I didn't know hardly anything about Android when I signed up here at XDA, but I did manage to contribute, and with out complaining about the rules. And now, a year later, I'm a Recognized Contributor. So, it's not that hard.
Rules are rules. Whether here, or out in the real world, they still stand.

And op, you're at 10 now. 3 of your posts were spent btching about the rule. Good job. I hope you feel you have contributed to the forum by complaining about a simple request that is made that you make 10 useful posts before posting in the dev area.

we all know the side effects of the rule. no need for noobs to drone on about it
