[q] what can i do? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok I have a STOCK HTC EVO 4G that has never been rooted or anything. For some reason it WON'T mount as disk drive but will charge and everything else normally! I'm on the LATEST sprint OTA too. Can anyone offer any advice or help. I have also tried HARD RESET, FACTORY RESET, & BATTERY PULL. There is also no port damage, I have never dropped phone in water or anything else either. People please help, I also have insurance with sprint

Try a different cord and make sure u have the drivers for you're computers os

Have you tried turning usb debugging on?
Edit: While I was in line at Sprint to get a replacement, I saw a guy that took his in for the same problem. They couldn't figure it out so they ordered a replacement. If you can't get anything to work then you can try taking it in.
Also install HTC Sync if you haven't already, and if you aren't using the stock cable try a different one. USB cords longer than a certain length (2 feet maybe) will only charge your device.
If you haven't tried a different port, try that as well.

This guys funny lol dude you still didn't figure this out you created a new thread to ask the same question instead of bumping your old thread

The cord I'm using once used to make it read in the ps3. All of a sudden it just stopped disk driving and yes I tried with debugging on! Idk if the new Sprint update did it but by the time I got around to trying to root it I had these issues

You keep the phone in charge only to root, so you can still root it.
Since it isn't rooted and you won't have to bother with unrooting, why not take it to Sprint and have them look at it? They can either tell you what is wrong and fix it or give you a replacement.

My Epic wont get recognized by any comp

Would appreciate it if someone could tell me how to fix this. It was always a problem my or any computer i used would never find my phone when i connected it via USB. I always got something saying usb port malfunction and when i go to my computer phone never shows but phone does charge through the usb so it is connected. Any help here would be appreciated.
P.S ive tried about 5 different usb cords and atleast 5 different computers even ones on campus
Take it to the store...
Get a new cable...a heavy dudty one like a Blackberry or Palm. It takes nothing to charge through the cable but a lot to pass data.

.. i had same problem: tried many cords, comp, reinstalled drivers, etc.
Finally i odined the phone as if it was bricked and all was well.
To make long story longer.... initially my comp would ID my phone great, (I rooted, mass storage the card, etc). but i took the phone to Sprint for other problems. I dont know what they did but my comp did not recognize my phone when i got it back, no matter what i did.
Odined the phone and poof! everything was back to normal.

USB Issues...

Hi All,
My SGS2X no longer connects to any PC for anything other than charging.
I've tried everything, trust me. I've come to the conclusion that it is defective and want to return it for a new one. The problem is that I have rooted it and need to undo this before I return it. Telus told me it would need to be sent to Samsung for testing before they will give me a new one, so I need to unroot before I allow this.
Is there any way to unroot without a USB connection to a PC or am I screwed?
Thanks,
Mael
you might want to send it in for repair, to have the USB port replaced
Try using a different wire this same thing happened to me i believe

You might haved tried that tho try another to be safe
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
every time my phone drops to the floor while plugged in, the first thing i always worry about is the usb port
because of those issues reported above
Tried different cables, same problem.
Same cables work with other devices and other phones...
Phone has never been dropped, plugged in or not, so must be a defect.
Seems like a defect to me and thus covered under warranty, only prob is that it's rooted, voiding the warranty. Hence the question on unrooting, but I don't think it's possible.
I may just put up with it for now... It's a hastle not having access to USB storage, but I can work around that. Once I decide what I want for a second phone (Nexus or Note), I'll buy that, then brick the GS2 and go for warranty replacement then...
Pain in tha a$$, but thems tha breaks...
just ... never mind
i was going to suggest Odin, but then i remembered, sheet no USB, no can't do
the stock rom can't be flashed form CWM on the external sd card? I didn't realize that ODIN was required to put back to stock. Just wanted to clarify this.
Have you tried blowing out your usb port on the phone with some compressed air ???
Had a friend of mine , brand new phone, his USB just stopped, it would charge, but nothing else ... Screwed with it for hours, then he blew it out, and it worked ..
Sometimes your phone just wants a good blow job, just like the rest of us ...
(yeah yeah rude crude and socially unacceptable , but hey still funny) ...
Never thought of that... I'll give it a try...

This thread describes a method for flashing a stock kernel and (somewhat) stock ROM by flashing the files with CWM. You won't need your USB port, I just don't know if the stock ROM linked to in that post, will pass for "stock" on your Telus SGS2X. It may be good enough to pass for a warranty exchange/repair, etc., or there may be a stock Telus ROM floating around that is CWM flashable.
Good Luck..
Have u tried the samsung usb cable that came with your phone? ive found samsung phones to transfer data with the stock cable...everything else just charges the phone....just a suggestion

Tried the compressed air, no effect.
The ROM on the phone is stock, all I've done is root and install CWM.
To al appearances the phone is stock, but for the presence of superuser and CWM.
Tried the original cable, no difference...
Telus told me to go where I bought the phone, so I'm going to try going to BB and raising a stink, see if they will replace it...
By bb u mean bestbuy im sure they will they are awesome with returns well atleast the one by my house i like there no questions asked hahaha

Phone is ruined?

So, I think I am screwed.
I am going to preface this by saying that I am very familiar with Android phones and am certainly not a noob. However, i am stumped here.
A few hours ago I tried updating my girlfriends phone to the latest version of MIUI 4. Well, it turns out that I was the poor guinea pig who found out for everyone that the uploaded file did indeed have an MD5 mismatch.
Anyhow, this borked my recovery (supposedly because a new kernel/cwm version was baked in to this flash).
Ok, I thought, I'll just put the phone in "Download Mode" and Odin back to stock and start over.
WRONG
The phone is NOT RECOGNIZED ON ANY COMPUTER. Not two different laptops running Windows 7 64-bit. Not a desktop running Windows 7 32-bit and not a Linux Box.
This isn't the typical "unrecognized device" error. I literally mean that it is NOT SEEN by any of these machines. There is no Windows "ding" or "noise" when it is plugged in. Nothing shows up in device manager as an unrecognized device. Nothing happens when I plug it in to my Linux machine.
I have tried FOUR different cable. The original Epic cable. My Epic Touch cable (which used to work great). A cable from a Nook Simple Touch and a cable from an HTC phone.
I am 99% certain that this is a hardware error and her phone is now ruined. She does not have TEP (she cancelled it for some reason -_-).
Has anyone ever heard of this? It can't be a driver issue because it would at least be seen by one of my devices correct? Or there would at least be a Windows "sound" when it is plugged in? The phone charges when connected, but nothing more whatsoever. I had issues in the past because of driver issues or bad cables. But, the fact of the matter is that the other day (when the phone was working fine) we plugged it into a computer and it would not recognize the phone at all (as I explained earlier). Even when storage was mounted, not a single thing was detected even though it used to work.
Sorry for the long winded and redundant post... It's quite late and i've been trying to fix this without freaking the woman out for the past 3+ hours. Driving me insane!
Anyone have any ideas? Or, any options I can take for if it truly is a lost cause?
Thanks everyone
uninstall all other phone drivers. Reboot. Install the drivers here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Windows is very very picky with drivers. If that doesn't work none of the cables you have used is a blackberry. I would say go out and buy a good blackberry cable or at least a good thick cable. Try another USB port as well. You can even try a fresh install of windows. If all fails then the USB is borked. Or it is dirty... see if you can't clean it out if you can see any lint or other gunk.

This might seem really crazy but i had the exact same problem about a year ago. It wasn't the cable, computer or the drives.
check the little connector piece in the phone where cable meets the phone. Its a small copper piece that can be notorious for bending up or down. I could charge my phone like you but couldn't figure out why the hell it wasnt syncing so try that and i could guess that's the issue. since its your gf's then Im sure she has some tweezers that an bend it back up but be very careful.

Also, the connector is physically bent. I'm going to try and bend it again today. The sides visibly form an ever so slight "u" shape.
I took the phone apart as well last night to get a better look. That piece does not appear to be interchangeable whatsoever. The entire input is like, awkwardly soldered to the system board...

you could get it JTAG'd. I'd Google for jtag services which will unbrick a hard brick. I doubt sprint will replace it unless you have a cool rep.

Do you think a JTAG would work? I truly think that this is a problem with the actual USB connector (we had problems with it before it got "stuck", EX: It wouldn't mount USB storage on any machines... Not detected at all when plugged in, aside from being charged). It isn't actually bricked... If my recovery would not have been wiped out by flashing the ROM with a bad MD5 OR, if I could get it to work on a PC/Linux machine I could easily Odin/Heimdall. I'm not exactly sure what a JTAG is, but I am 99% sure that I could fix this if it weren't for some crazy ass hardware issue. I'll try calling around.
Thanks man.
Its a direct communication with the board, is what I've grasped from hearing and reading about it. With this and a program it should rewrite things and allow you to flash things. Although now that I think about it your not hard bricked if you can get into Odin. And jtag usually puts it into download mode. Although I'm sure you can flash the stock firmware via jtag. Like I said Google things

Charging light won't turn off

Sooo. I'm posting for my friends sake. His red charging light won't turn off. Also we can't connect the phone to any laptop because it says that the USB device is malfunctioning. I have the drivers and everything on the laptop so it should connect but it just won't. Is there anyway to unroot the phone without using a computer so he can take it to the sprint store so he can get it repaired? They won't repair the USB cause its rooted. But I can't unroot with my computer because the USB connection is borked. Any help would be appreciated!

Even if the phone is rooted they are still supposed to fix it. Why do some stores give people such issues over root? At least have them flash it to stock. Or get mobile Odin and flash a stock rooted rom. If the store is turning you down over a custom rom, they probably won't know the difference.
Edit: also, clean your USB port. Make sure its not bent in there and touching the side of the port.

I appreciate the help man. I'll let him know ASAP.
I am now having this same problem with my phone. Something is making contact somewhere in the usb port and it's causing the phone to auto reboot back on when I shut it down and/or think that it is constantly connected to a usb cable. I can't connect to anything other than a charger therefore I can not flash back to stock. I'll be taking it to Sprint and crossing my fingers.
I've gotten my phone back to complete stock with Mobile Odin and .tar file of stock EL29 i had laying around. If you need a copy, PM me.

[Q] USB connection Issues

For the past few days i have been racking my brain trying to figure out what went wrong.
For some reason I can no longer connect my phone to my computer to transfer/move files. it acts as if the drivers will not take. when i check the device manager it reads SAMSUNG_Android with the yellow !
I have reinstalled lastest drivers from Samsung site, removed all drivers and tried from Kies software/ rebooted pc and phone countless times. tired my laptop where it use to always work and same results. One this i did notice was at some point i got an error on my internal sd card and that i should format it. I backed up all files via ftp formated the internal sd and tried again.. all with the same results. I have also tried 3 different cables.
PCs both windows 7 one 32bit the other 64.
Phone e4gt rooted FI27, everything else stock
All and Any Help greatly Appreciated.
Here it comes!!
I'm hoping that I'm wrong BUT, that is exactly how my EMMC brick started. Let us know if your phone just shuts down and the only thing you will get is a blue light. There us nothing you can do then but take it back to Sprint for a free replacement. I couldn't figure my USB issues out for maybe a week and then it just died when i plugged it in to transfer photos I'd just taken 30 seconds before it died. Lets hope I'm wrong but I'm writing this with my new phone ate the exact same symptoms with my previous Sammy. Try to get your internal memory backed up now! Boot your CWM and mount your external USB. I wished I'd have.
Try a brand new cable and see if that helps. This phone seems to be especially intolerant of if connections.

I still say try a brand new cable. When I first had this issue I tried 3 or 4 old ones before buying a new one.
Today my brothers nexus s wouldn't charge except with one particular cable. I think that the cable and port are still within individual tolerances but together there is just too much play in the connection.
