4G idle - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Okay so I am coming from a EVO 4G and when you have the 4G on and connected the phone stays on 4G the whole time. On this phone if you are not using the data the 4G goes idle until you need data. My question is that when its idle because my phone is locked and on my desk will I still get push notifications. I use an app called KIK which is just a chat app to talk to my girlfriend alot, am I going to be missing messages because the 4G turned off? Will I miss some email notifications?

It should kick in when your app requires data. It did that on the OG evo it just didn't say it in the status bar

+1 OG evo as a matter of fact all of the 4G phones do it. The epic touch just notifies you when the connection is dormant.
Your 3G does the same thing, and yes, yuo still get the push notifications on 3G or 4g

Oh okay. I was not aware of that. Thank you.

[Q] Removing 3G and Voice Service

I was wondering if it was possible to remove 3g data and voice service from an EVO running 2.2, while keeping Wimax intact.
I'm using my EVO solely on my Clearwire account, and I'm thinking those radios being on, while not in service cause battery hell.
What could be removed in order to achieve this? If possible.
Thanks in advance.
(I could have sworn I did this one time by destroying a Sense build and using an alternative launcher to use the phone, as there was no signal bar, and it no longer said "Searching for service" or "Sprint".)

Can always turn 3g...but I'm sure its possible...its a different radio
buying a hotspot and using wifi
you can use switch pro widget. Has setting to make airplane mode (from its widget) to only turn off voice (also turns off 3g data). Then make another 4g widget and you should be good from there... unless i misunderstood what you wanted...

Data Icons... Or lack of?

OK does this phone actually show anything other than 4g?
I am in a 3g area and I have not ever seen anything but the 4g icon.. Unless I put it in gsm only mode. But on auto or Wcdma mode it stays on the 4g icon.
Also it seems like I have issues with the Internet staying connected even when I have signal.
Also it seems like when I leave my screen off and turn it on the signal is higher than normal but goes down within a few seconds.
Anyone else notice this?

I am having the EXACT same issues. But, I am in a 4G area. Of course I got throttled by blowing through my 5G limit in a week--damn these new toys and massively restrictive internet access at work (financial industry). So now I am on edge for a while; but with the 4G icon up, I cannot hold a data connection at all. It goes on for a few seconds or such, then nothing. The upload icon is always on, but no download. I have to force GSM mode to maintain any sort of connection. The "Auto GSM/Wcdma" does not switch modes efficiently. I think it is continually checking for a 4G connection, thus resetting the 3G/Edge connection it is making. Very frustrating. . . I am hoping someone with make a Auto/4G/3G/Edge toggle so I can drop it on the homescreen rather than digging down for it.
Same thing here. Always on 4g and my wifi is spotty like the first poster. What's the deal?

5gb in one week?? That's insane usage u might need the 10gb option..
The 3g 4g network is the same network.. some towers aren't updated and some phones don't get 4g speeds but that's why it always says 4g

[Q] What happens when WIFI is on + 4G signal?

When you connect Wifi and you see the wifi bars and a 4G HSPA signal being received, is the 4g radio doing work?
Freezing My Account in Ti backup for some reason negates this, but I don't know why it does or what it solves. Just that theres no more "4G" when connected to wifi. Unfreeze to check data balance.
Yeah, I don't know what the issue is exactly. I never had that problem with my Vibrant, but my G2X was a lot worse than my SGS2.
Freezing MyAccount doesn't do anything IMO since we all have the same issue after freezing it.
My work around if it starts happening is turning off wifi- wait about a min- then turn it back on and that usually take 4G away. Or simply turn of data. Lucky for us we have toggles that do that.
Powered by the SGSII....
Use 2 x battery app or juice defender. Both will turnt
of data automatically when you cut on wifi so you can save some power and data usage
Is there any reason to upgrade/purchase Juice Defender? Or is the free app doing it's thing?

Why would you want to turn data off when connected to wifi? You won't get text messeages...
(And btw, Tasker can do this as well as about 1,000 other things.)

Lol, like other's have said, txt has nothing to do with data. If that were the case, how did old school flip phones with no data manage to pull off texting?

Wouldn't data usage be necessary for your simcard to communicate with the network and give you exact account info?

I don't have the My Account app on my phone, at all, and no CIQ, but this still happens.
It happened earlier today when I was in the Android Market. It's rather annoying.

That's true but, you cannot sent mms. I call t-mo and they
told me in order to be able to send & receive mms, you have to
Have on the signal. If the data is off, no mms.
I usually just use advanced task killer when this happens, seems to work

Anyone else think the wifi/4g toggling is stupid?

Why is it if I have 4g "on" I can turn "on" my wifi but to turn "on" 4g my wifi must be "off"? Seems pretty dumb. At my work I have great wifi on one side of the building and 4g on the other side. I have to turn them both on in a certain order though. Is there a fix for this?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
im pritty sure they use the same antenna array thats why its done like that
Because wifi sucks less battery. So if you have your wifi on then more than likely you are in a wifi area so why turn 4G on and drain battery. Only way around it is having 4g on and turning wifi on after. The way I see it switching from 4G to wifi is convenient for the battery that's why it's allowed, now if it were the opposite way your just killing battery switching 4g on when you have a wifi connection. You can still see 4g scan for service even when connected to wifi periodically when you have both wifi n 4g radio on (it scans and the min it connects wifi knocks off the connection). This also happens on my Evo 3D. So I guess it's to prevent battery drain..

Personally I like it. Where I work, there is no signal at my desk, so I am on WiFi. When I go outside to talk on the phone or take a break, I like only having to disable WiFi to get the 4G to turn on for faster browsing.
That coupled with the issue of the 4G not rescanning after a while, you may have to cycle your 4G anyways.

Where did my 4G go!

I live in area that does not have 4 g so it stays off, however today at airport I tried and no 4G toggle anywhere! Where did it go, I swore when I got s3 I tested 4G but now it's gone? Thanks for help.

GS3 doent have a 4g "toggle" as you say...but you can make sure its enabled
settings-->more settings-->Mobile Network-->Network mode.
Preferred network mode should be set to "CDMA/LTE/EVDO"
If you have "CDMA/LTE/EVDO" enabled, anytime your in a Sprint LTE area your phone icon will switch from 3g to 4g.

it shouldnt chew up ure bttery at all, as all it does is search the network for 4gLTE and if it doesnt find it, it will automaticly go to sleep and try again like 2 or 3 hours later or periodically as it tells u. .however u do need to have sprint automatic connention left on in order for that work. atleast thats what i got from reading the sprint connection optimizer information it gave me.

The optimizer isn't for the LTE. I hate that garbage so I always leave it off. As long as your preferred network is set as stated above, it will automatically switch between them. Side note though, it may switch back to 3g if you don't have a very strong 4 g signal. It likes to be weird.

Sounds like your thinking of a wimax phone. I I had a Motorola Photon and you had to physically turn 4g on and off on it.... I think most wimax 4g phones are that way.

Do any of the custom ROMS have a toggle for 4g/3g? I live in a 4g area but sometimes the signal isn't strong enough so it goes to 3g. Quite annoying. It would be great to toggle 3g off and force 4g.
So I had s2 before s3, so I assume the s2 was a 4 -g wimax? It had a toggle widget.

Have you tried updating to the new radio? I believe they boosted the power to give slightly better LTE connectivity in those kinds of environments.
There is a way to force LTE on the GS3. I did it with mine so that I could map out the LTE zones with sensorly a bit easier while I was driving over the weekend. The way I was able to do this is you need to have Nova Launcher downloaded and installed.
Once you do this, long press on the home screen and go to "Shortcuts".
Next click on "Activities"
Next scroll down to "IOTHiddenMenu"
Then scroll down and click on "IOTHiddenMenu : HDR1X_Selection"
Doing this will allow you to force LTE only mode. Keep in mind you WILL NOT be able to make any phone calls while doing this. For some reason the GS3 requires the phone to be in LTE + CDMA + EVDO Mode to make calls even if you have a very strong LTE signal.
Another app I would recommend downloading is called OpenSignalMaps. Once you have the LTE only mode turned on or even the normal LTE + CDMA mode, you can use this app to refresh your network by clicking the little refresh button at the bottom left of the app in the Overview tab. What this does is pretty much turn your phones mobile networks on and off and then scan for LTE first before scanning for EVDO. I have been able to connect to many more LTE sites by doing this. Even ones that are fairly far away.
Hope this all helps. Let me know if you have any extra questions.
No data connection at all
I have the settings on GSM/HSPA/LTE, but lost data connection completely. Tried to restart and turned on/off flight mode - still no data. Voice in and out is OK. I finally managed to reconnect by repeating the process. Is there a better way to reconnect?
Thanks.

Thanks. Unfortunately, the "Network" app would not run. So I followed a similar line, and found "3G Reconnect". It does not fix the connection issue. Any other thoughts?
