GS3 doent have a 4g "toggle" as you say...but you can make sure its enabled
settings-->more settings-->Mobile Network-->Network mode.
Preferred network mode should be set to "CDMA/LTE/EVDO"
If you have "CDMA/LTE/EVDO" enabled, anytime your in a Sprint LTE area your phone icon will switch from 3g to 4g.

it shouldnt chew up ure bttery at all, as all it does is search the network for 4gLTE and if it doesnt find it, it will automaticly go to sleep and try again like 2 or 3 hours later or periodically as it tells u. .however u do need to have sprint automatic connention left on in order for that work. atleast thats what i got from reading the sprint connection optimizer information it gave me.

The optimizer isn't for the LTE. I hate that garbage so I always leave it off. As long as your preferred network is set as stated above, it will automatically switch between them. Side note though, it may switch back to 3g if you don't have a very strong 4 g signal. It likes to be weird.

Sounds like your thinking of a wimax phone. I I had a Motorola Photon and you had to physically turn 4g on and off on it.... I think most wimax 4g phones are that way.

Do any of the custom ROMS have a toggle for 4g/3g? I live in a 4g area but sometimes the signal isn't strong enough so it goes to 3g. Quite annoying. It would be great to toggle 3g off and force 4g.
So I had s2 before s3, so I assume the s2 was a 4 -g wimax? It had a toggle widget.

Have you tried updating to the new radio? I believe they boosted the power to give slightly better LTE connectivity in those kinds of environments.
There is a way to force LTE on the GS3. I did it with mine so that I could map out the LTE zones with sensorly a bit easier while I was driving over the weekend. The way I was able to do this is you need to have Nova Launcher downloaded and installed.
Once you do this, long press on the home screen and go to "Shortcuts".
Next click on "Activities"
Next scroll down to "IOTHiddenMenu"
Then scroll down and click on "IOTHiddenMenu : HDR1X_Selection"
Doing this will allow you to force LTE only mode. Keep in mind you WILL NOT be able to make any phone calls while doing this. For some reason the GS3 requires the phone to be in LTE + CDMA + EVDO Mode to make calls even if you have a very strong LTE signal.
Another app I would recommend downloading is called OpenSignalMaps. Once you have the LTE only mode turned on or even the normal LTE + CDMA mode, you can use this app to refresh your network by clicking the little refresh button at the bottom left of the app in the Overview tab. What this does is pretty much turn your phones mobile networks on and off and then scan for LTE first before scanning for EVDO. I have been able to connect to many more LTE sites by doing this. Even ones that are fairly far away.
Hope this all helps. Let me know if you have any extra questions.
No data connection at all
I have the settings on GSM/HSPA/LTE, but lost data connection completely. Tried to restart and turned on/off flight mode - still no data. Voice in and out is OK. I finally managed to reconnect by repeating the process. Is there a better way to reconnect?
Thanks.

Thanks. Unfortunately, the "Network" app would not run. So I followed a similar line, and found "3G Reconnect". It does not fix the connection issue. Any other thoughts?

turn off "mobile network" and just use wifi at home?
I've read that the phone constantly searching for 3G and/or using 3G is a big battery drain. Also that unless you require the bandwidth you can do just fine with 2g. There are apps on the market to let you switch 3g off but the ones I found don't work with cdma phones.
Turning mobile network off like said above will turn off 3g...
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Doesn't it turn off 2G or edge also. I want data when I don't have wifi. I also thought the phone switched off mobile network when connects wifi automatically.
If you hold the power button and turn off mobile network it turns off 3g. It goes to 1x and you basically receive text and phone calls..it helps turning it off in my house because I don't get great reception so its not always looking for that 3g
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Thanks. Is that only 1G? That's partially what I want. Better would be to be able to get 2G which would be ok for web browsing. 1x is painfully slow and useless. I'd like to be able to switch to 3x just for streaming video, downloading, or other high data needs.

Yes.
Hold power down.
I think ATT when you turn off 3g it goes to 2g.but if um not using 3g I keep it in 1x
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
If you still have sense, there is a widget from the settings that you can add to do this instead of having to hit the power button. Make it a 1 step process!
So it is not possible to shut off 3G and keep 2G?
analog = 1Gen network
1X = 2Gen network
EVDO = 3Gen network
EDGE is GSM 2G, does not apply to this discussion.

No.
An easy way to see what you can and can't do is to install the HTC Widgets (found under "Widgets", then "Settings").
The one's relevant to the topic are:
Mobile Network and Wi-Fi.
I also use Bluetooth and GPS widgets, and between the four, manage battery consumption as best I can depending upon what I'm doing and whether or not I have wi-fi coverage available. If I'm just doing calls and SMS text messaging, I turn them all off.
OK. Thanks all

Incredible. The OP is looking for wireless data (see his post #5) when 3G is off. If you can do that, post a how-to. When I disable 3G and wi-fi, I get 1x - which is 2G, as explained - but isn't what the OP is trying to ask for (but getting terminology mixed up).
I just want to save battery. Can my phone switch to 2g if I turn on Wifi?
Any mod or app?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
that question hurts my head.
wifi is wifi...it will connect to a wifi network if an open one is around. this does save battery over 3g.
however, this will have no effect on cellular data.
you may be able to go into settings>more>mobile networks>network mode and toggle through some of those options...one of them will probably witch to 2g mode.
FYI, those instructions are for the CDMA/LTE Gnexus....so your results may differ. but that is where i can toggle from LTE to 3g mode....assuming you would be able to toggle from 3g to 2g mode.
Your mobile network gets disconnected when you connect to Wi-Fi anyways. So who cares?
Thanks!

I've had a Sprint Galaxy Nexus for about 4 months and have never seen a 4G indication. It's non-rooted, running stock Jellybean with FH05 radios.
I live in Houston and have also traveled to Chicago, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles with this phone without ever seeing a 4G indication. I looked at the Sensorly 4G maps in Houston and drove along the 4G routes for a couple hours and never got any 4G signal.
I've played around with the *#*#4636#*#* menu but I haven't found anything that made any difference. Most of the posts say to select "LTE Only", but my menu does not have that option. It is currently set to "GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL)".
Can anyone think of something I'm missing? I'm eligible for an upgrade next month but I was planning to stick with the GNex a few more months. This 3g-only crap is killing me. I was hoping to keep the phone stock so I can pass the phone off to my mom/wife when I upgrade (without having to revert to stock), but it looks like I might have to root/rom it if I can't find a better answer.
crying for help :crying:
I would say after typing in the secret menu code, turn off the radio and turn it back on; see if that does anything.
Are you sure their isn't a LTE Only option? It should be at the bottom like the last option.'
If you're really that desperate for LTE, you might have to root your phone and flash a radio (which isn't too horribly hard to do) or change the PRL manually.

I've tried turning the radio off/on. I don't see an LTE Only option in the menu, but I'll check again to make sure.
I'm beginning to think that I may need to root/flash to get it going. I was hoping that having one of the nexus phones would get me away from flashing half-working ROM's every couple weeks, but it looks like I'm headed back that way :silly:.
Thanks for the suggestions
4G works just fine stock. If it isn't working for you now it most likely still won't work if you root and flash a different ROM. 4G maps aren't all that accurate and 4G signals drop in level fast when there are things between you and the tower. Either something is wrong with your phone or you just haven't been in an area which a strong enough 4G signal for your phone to pick it up. Make sure your phone is set to CDMA/LTE in the mobile network settings and not to CDMA only.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
How do you know your area has LTE? Do you know someone who has your carrier that gets LTE? If you're going by a coverage map, as said before, blah. You shouldn't need to tamper with your phone to get LTE. Try contacting your provider if your that concerned. The setting you have in the secret menu does a lot. Make sure that its set to something that allows LTE. Even my GSM HSPA+ nexus has an LTE Only option.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Thing with sprint ive noticed is it uses whatever signal is the strongest. So while you may have 4g coverage, if your 3g is even a signal signal strength higher, it always uses that. You should be able to force lte, but from what I've read that causes calls and SMS/MMS to break until you revert back to auto.

I had the same suspicion about the coverage maps which is why it took so long for me to post for help. Recently I sat in the same car with an EVO LTE that was getting a 4g signal and I got no 4G. That's what made me take a second look at my settings to see why I wasn't getting it.
It could very easily be a matter of picking the strongest signal and I'm ok with that. The secondary problem that I have is that I've read so many descriptions of an "LTE Only" option in the networks menu and I don't have that either . In fact, none of the options in my menu specify "LTE", even in combination with CDMA.
My list of networks in the special menu:
WCDMA preferred
GSM only
WCDMA only
GSM auto (PRL)
CDMA auto (PRL) (3G)
EvDo only
GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) (default - 3G)
Unknown
Thanks for all of the responses, I'll keep digging for a solution.

Make sure lte/cdma is on. Try setting Connection Optimizer to off and try updating profile. Or maybe even an airplane toggle.

Mine does the same thing lte has been released since September in my area and I can't hold lte either my only option is to enable and disable airplane mode and the phone will immediately pick it up. I'm on replacement number two and all have done the same thing.
guys you can try this, go to the dialer and enter in ##3282# (##data#). go down to the advanced sub panel and edit the Next LTE Scan to 300, BSR timer to 120, BSR Max Timer to 300. You will need your MSL for this to work. Battery life will not decrease. This setting change will change the time frame cycle between scanning for a LTE signal to 2-5 minutes. For example if your connected to LTE and loose connection the phone will automaticly scan for it again in 2 minutes instead of the stock set time.
I reconnect my LGOG one last time before I shipped her off to her new owner and I quickly realize what I hated about the phone. Crappy 4g connection actually crappy radios overall.

The current modem seems to *really* want to be on LTE. If you don't care about LTE you can disable it...settings - connections tab - more networks - mobile networks - change "Network Mode" to GSM/WCDMA. You'll still get HSPA+ speeds, but it should stay connected better.

Thanks man, it's just weird that the only way to get back connected is to make a phone call... I was at the time bike store yesterday and they mentioned something about updating the towers to LTE and should be over end of this summer... They said they are already ahead of sprint as in service at the moment and they are trying to be on the same page as AT&T and Verizon. I messed with the option by the way many times but didn't notice the difference yet but I will update the result on a following reply in the future. Thanks again
