Anybody heard of yhis happening?
Make sure lte/cdma is on. Try setting Connection Optimizer to off and try updating profile. Or maybe even an airplane toggle.

Mine does the same thing lte has been released since September in my area and I can't hold lte either my only option is to enable and disable airplane mode and the phone will immediately pick it up. I'm on replacement number two and all have done the same thing.
guys you can try this, go to the dialer and enter in ##3282# (##data#). go down to the advanced sub panel and edit the Next LTE Scan to 300, BSR timer to 120, BSR Max Timer to 300. You will need your MSL for this to work. Battery life will not decrease. This setting change will change the time frame cycle between scanning for a LTE signal to 2-5 minutes. For example if your connected to LTE and loose connection the phone will automaticly scan for it again in 2 minutes instead of the stock set time.
I reconnect my LGOG one last time before I shipped her off to her new owner and I quickly realize what I hated about the phone. Crappy 4g connection actually crappy radios overall.

I live in the suburbs of Houston where the WiMAX coverage is kind of spotty. If I leave an area of coverage for more than like say a minute, my 4G will stop attempting to scan for a new 4G signal and never attempt to reconnect even if I enter a new area with 4G coverage. I have to manually toggle the connection in the notification bar.
I've searched the forums and noticed several posts describing the same issue.
Does anyone have a solution?

Bluetooth is not turned for on my device.
Bump. Anyone else having this issue?
I'm using the phone app so I don't know the link, but there's a link in general, I think, that describes increasing 4g performance. There's two simple tweaks to do and some involved ones. I just did the two simple ones. One is to change the retry interval down to 15 seconds and the minimum signal level for 4g lock is -110db. Those two changes made a noticeable improvement on fringe areas and inside for me.

I did those tweaks, that is not the issue. I have tried all the WiMax_Scan_Retry from 1 to 300 and the WiMAX will never reconnect.
For example: I do not have 4G at school and I have 4G at home. If I drive to school, the 4G will disconnect.
Then when I drive home back into 4G coverage and go to sleep even after 10 hours, the 4G will not reconnect.
Bump!!! Also have this issue.

Try doing what most people do, when you know your leaving a 4g area turn it off. Then turn it back on when you get home. No sense in wasting battery. That and it only takes a couple seconds to turn out back on and reconnect.

I have extended battery that will literally last days even with 4G on so that is not an issue for me. Besides, this is not a viable solution if I want 4G in the car and it moves in and out of areas of spotty coverage. 3G where I live is about as fast as 1x.
Mod? Rooted? Modem?
Is your phone software on stock?
What OTA updates/mods are you running?
Kernel/Modem versions?
It would be good to know of the people seeing these problems have similar software/mods/modems.

I agree. Post your setup in detail. It will help to narrow this issue down. For example I had similar prob's on EL13 modem but with 26/29 flash all is good.
So more info plz.

I tried these:
Stock/Stock+Root/Starburst/Caulkin
EK02/EL26/EL29
Rogue1.3/1.4
This may be an example where adjusting the WiMax settings in ##data# with MSL number will help. Try lowering minimum signal picked up from -89 to -110, you can also change how long it stays connected and how fast it reconnects too...and here's where to read about it all...I did it on my OG Epic, Nexus, and this phone but slightly modified settings..it could also be a kernel thing too. Some of the Nexus ICS ones do that and wont reconnect until you go into settings and toggle

If i walk outside again, still stays 3g until i toggle off and on 4g again....

Anyone know of an app that will toggle 4g for us when it loses connection?
Or maybe a tasker profile? I tried in tasker, but I can't seem to get it to do more than basic things. There a couple spots in town that always lose 4g when I drive by and never reconnects as well. 3g is slower than when I use roam control on 1x verizon.
How's it going everyone. Just left sprint for T-Mobile. Even with the problems I'm having its still better than sprint crappy network. Anyways. For some reason no matter what ROM I'm on I'm having issues where the WiFi will turn off it will go to 4g than WiFi will randomly turn back on. Or I'll have great service than randomly I'll see an E near my signal bars and it slows down for a good 5 minutes. Any idea what may be causing the problem?

Well if you are getting the E, that's Tmobile's network for ya. It is quite spotty. I get the same thing and goes back to 4G soon after. One of my main gripes with Tmobile.
If you do what DocHoliday said, it won't work at all. Just won't have any signal at all. If you leave it to auto, you will at least get the EDGE network.
Did this do the same thing with your old phone? If not, not sure what the deal would be besides weak radio maybe.
Try using the Llama app to force wifi on and disable the radios when around specific locations?
That's a workaround though...

Its worth a shot. I had issues with staying on 4G when I first got the phone. That fixed it for me.
Spotty service depends upon your area imo. Sounds more like a network issue to me. Could be a side effect from all the refarming work they're doing on the network. Its a nationwide project so it can hapoen anywhere.
@op
If you turn off WiFi does it work as it should? If so check that WiFi calling isn't enabled and set to WiFi preferred. If it is turn it off and test, then if fixed turn it back on and try Cellular preferred.

For what it's worth, I had this issue yesterday out of the blue. Nearly every time I would unlock my phone, wifi would be disconnected and I'd see the 4G icon. After unlocking the phone, a few seconds later it would connect up to wifi again. And yes, this is even with wifi set to always on in the advanced settings.
I realize there could be multiple causes for this symptom, but the fix for me was simply forget the wifi network and connect up to it again and the issue disappeared since then. Hasn't happened today yet either.

GS3 doent have a 4g "toggle" as you say...but you can make sure its enabled
settings-->more settings-->Mobile Network-->Network mode.
Preferred network mode should be set to "CDMA/LTE/EVDO"
If you have "CDMA/LTE/EVDO" enabled, anytime your in a Sprint LTE area your phone icon will switch from 3g to 4g.

it shouldnt chew up ure bttery at all, as all it does is search the network for 4gLTE and if it doesnt find it, it will automaticly go to sleep and try again like 2 or 3 hours later or periodically as it tells u. .however u do need to have sprint automatic connention left on in order for that work. atleast thats what i got from reading the sprint connection optimizer information it gave me.

The optimizer isn't for the LTE. I hate that garbage so I always leave it off. As long as your preferred network is set as stated above, it will automatically switch between them. Side note though, it may switch back to 3g if you don't have a very strong 4 g signal. It likes to be weird.

Do any of the custom ROMS have a toggle for 4g/3g? I live in a 4g area but sometimes the signal isn't strong enough so it goes to 3g. Quite annoying. It would be great to toggle 3g off and force 4g.
So I had s2 before s3, so I assume the s2 was a 4 -g wimax? It had a toggle widget.

Have you tried updating to the new radio? I believe they boosted the power to give slightly better LTE connectivity in those kinds of environments.
There is a way to force LTE on the GS3. I did it with mine so that I could map out the LTE zones with sensorly a bit easier while I was driving over the weekend. The way I was able to do this is you need to have Nova Launcher downloaded and installed.
Once you do this, long press on the home screen and go to "Shortcuts".
Next click on "Activities"
Next scroll down to "IOTHiddenMenu"
Then scroll down and click on "IOTHiddenMenu : HDR1X_Selection"
Doing this will allow you to force LTE only mode. Keep in mind you WILL NOT be able to make any phone calls while doing this. For some reason the GS3 requires the phone to be in LTE + CDMA + EVDO Mode to make calls even if you have a very strong LTE signal.
Another app I would recommend downloading is called OpenSignalMaps. Once you have the LTE only mode turned on or even the normal LTE + CDMA mode, you can use this app to refresh your network by clicking the little refresh button at the bottom left of the app in the Overview tab. What this does is pretty much turn your phones mobile networks on and off and then scan for LTE first before scanning for EVDO. I have been able to connect to many more LTE sites by doing this. Even ones that are fairly far away.
Hope this all helps. Let me know if you have any extra questions.
No data connection at all
I have the settings on GSM/HSPA/LTE, but lost data connection completely. Tried to restart and turned on/off flight mode - still no data. Voice in and out is OK. I finally managed to reconnect by repeating the process. Is there a better way to reconnect?

I was wondering if there is a way to make my tMob SGS3 do better at seeking and maintaining a WCDMA connection?
I know I can change the Mobile Network Mode to WCDMA only, and I do sometimes.
However, when it is in Auto mode, it switches back and forth constantly between GSM and WCDMA. In my home when I force WCDMA mode it has 2-3 bars of WCDMA and it does not drop the connection. When I put it on auto, it switches back and forth every minute or 2. I flashed and tried every modem possible but the results are the same.
Is there any way, besides WCDMA only mode, that I can make my phone more aggressively seek and keep WCDMA when it is available?
Thanks!

Dude I feel ya. I seriously think it all started once they switched to the 1900 band for 3g. Cause when I had my HTC HD2 it was mostly 3g in my house. Now it hardly ever switches to 3g unless I force it.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
It works great when I switch it to WCDMA only, however I keep forgetting to switch it to GSM/WCDMA when I leave the house or work. I'm thinking of getting some TecTile NFC stickers to cause my phone to remind me to switch or maybe try to find a way to automate it with them or something.
If it sits at G or E until you start a data transfer and then jumps to 4G this is how it was originally set up to operate. The intent was to save both battery and banwidth. It was like this for me until I updated and it stopped. It was annoying so I'm glad it was changed. But if you are on either build UVALEM or UVALG1 try updating to the latest official build UVALH2.
Otherwise it may just be the tower you're connected to is under heavy load and is trying to conserve bandwidth, or it may just not be functioning correctly.
One other thing it could also be is if your area hasn't been refarmed yet. (It may be that this is what changed it for me but its been a while and I know I had updated about the same time I noticed it, so I attributed to that) the more I think about it now, if updating doesn't change its behavior, this is probably what's going on.

Thanks. I am on UVALH2. I think the way it is supposed to be setup is to sit on UMTS while conserving bat/data and switch to HSPAP when moving data (Both WCDMA protocols). It actually has been much better today. Don;t know if the tower in my area was having issues the last few days.
I checked for NFC programs that would allow me to change my networks based on location and none have that fine level of settings.
It isn't really a problem if I switch it to WCDMA only, it's just that I forget to switch it back to both when I'm on the road and I end up missing calls.
Well, I guess that answers whether it was the update that did it for me! I'm guessing it must be due to the network refarming then. Like I said, it did the same for me for a while, but I haven't had it hapoen at all for some time now.
You could look for an app that lets you create location based profiles. You can set it to be one way at home and when you leave it'll automatically change to your other settings.
I would imagine Tasker could handle this as well, but I've never used it.

When I was at home I'd get a good lte signal.
I've been traveling the last week and I've been on 3g the whole time. I've been in chicago the last two days and still on 3g.
I've tried restarting, updating profile/prl, switching on and off airplane mode.
This note 4 is running stock rom, I've only rooted it and done the sql hack to enable the WiFi hotspot (which I haven't bothered to use since it's 3g).
