I was wondering if there is a way to make my tMob SGS3 do better at seeking and maintaining a WCDMA connection?
I know I can change the Mobile Network Mode to WCDMA only, and I do sometimes.
However, when it is in Auto mode, it switches back and forth constantly between GSM and WCDMA. In my home when I force WCDMA mode it has 2-3 bars of WCDMA and it does not drop the connection. When I put it on auto, it switches back and forth every minute or 2. I flashed and tried every modem possible but the results are the same.
Is there any way, besides WCDMA only mode, that I can make my phone more aggressively seek and keep WCDMA when it is available?
Thanks!

Dude I feel ya. I seriously think it all started once they switched to the 1900 band for 3g. Cause when I had my HTC HD2 it was mostly 3g in my house. Now it hardly ever switches to 3g unless I force it.

It works great when I switch it to WCDMA only, however I keep forgetting to switch it to GSM/WCDMA when I leave the house or work. I'm thinking of getting some TecTile NFC stickers to cause my phone to remind me to switch or maybe try to find a way to automate it with them or something.
If it sits at G or E until you start a data transfer and then jumps to 4G this is how it was originally set up to operate. The intent was to save both battery and banwidth. It was like this for me until I updated and it stopped. It was annoying so I'm glad it was changed. But if you are on either build UVALEM or UVALG1 try updating to the latest official build UVALH2.
Otherwise it may just be the tower you're connected to is under heavy load and is trying to conserve bandwidth, or it may just not be functioning correctly.
One other thing it could also be is if your area hasn't been refarmed yet. (It may be that this is what changed it for me but its been a while and I know I had updated about the same time I noticed it, so I attributed to that) the more I think about it now, if updating doesn't change its behavior, this is probably what's going on.

Thanks. I am on UVALH2. I think the way it is supposed to be setup is to sit on UMTS while conserving bat/data and switch to HSPAP when moving data (Both WCDMA protocols). It actually has been much better today. Don;t know if the tower in my area was having issues the last few days.
I checked for NFC programs that would allow me to change my networks based on location and none have that fine level of settings.
It isn't really a problem if I switch it to WCDMA only, it's just that I forget to switch it back to both when I'm on the road and I end up missing calls.
Well, I guess that answers whether it was the update that did it for me! I'm guessing it must be due to the network refarming then. Like I said, it did the same for me for a while, but I haven't had it hapoen at all for some time now.
You could look for an app that lets you create location based profiles. You can set it to be one way at home and when you leave it'll automatically change to your other settings.
I would imagine Tasker could handle this as well, but I've never used it.

Can anyone explain how the Arc (or is it generic to android) controls the switch between HSPDA / 3G / GSM etc?
I live right on the edge of a HSPDA / GSM reception area, so sitting in the same chair I'm often browsing using "H", and then slowed down to "G" - and vice-versa. Unfortunately, every time it switches it seems (to me) that there is a lag while it establishes a connection again.
Is their any way to configure the ARC to make it attempt to stay with "H" for a bit longer?
Go to Setting - Wireless & networks - Mobile Networks and change the Network Mode into WCDMA
Hope that help you!

Changing from Edge(E) to Hspda(H) doesnt drop the connection but the from H to E does. Also if the H signal is weak, it will change automatically to E. If you are in a building , parking etc you will have à weak H signal since your phone is covered by the walls

thank you both repliers.
It looks like there's no practical alternative to just letting the switch over happen as Sony have programmed it (or moving house).
You can try forcing to use GSM only or WCDMA only instead of GMS / WCDMA preferred.
The setting is under Wireless --> Mobile network settings --> Network Mode.
By forcing it to use WCDMA, the phone doesn't try to switch to GSM even when it has low signal. Good thing here is that, it doesn't try to switch between the two frequently hence battery might be saved and the bad thing about this is that, when you have a week signal, the phone tries to get better signal since it cannot switch to over to another frequency, hence the boosting uses more battery power.
Try it for yourself .

This is not only happening as programming by Sony but more likely by your operator. The operator defines the parameters that decide when they wish your mobile to switch from one network to the other, how weak they will allow the signal to become etc.
You can contact you operator, maybe they will log a case on it and investigate if the radio planning could be changed in your area.
OK, so I was playing around with my advanced radio menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and I found something odd (or so it seems to me, maybe someone with more knowledge could correct me). I went into the Phone information tab. It shows you some statistics, as anyone who's enters it knows, one of which is your network type. Mine rests on UMTS:3 (3G), of course, unless I run a ping test in which time it goes to HSPAP:15 (as it should).
Anyway, I decided to press the menu button and pressed "select radio band". I live in the US, so I assumed maybe since "automatic" is set by default, maybe I could play around with it and select USA. I did, waited for it to take, pressed the "turn radio off" button, waited about 5 minutes, then turned it back on. The results are what I found odd.
At that point, my phone only connected to Edge network, and would not switch above that to even 3G. Switched it back to automatic and I reconnected to HSPA:15. Should this be a normal effect?
I'm kind of curious and may select each band, one by one, and see what type of results are found.
EDIT-
Automatic connects normally (not sure which band it is selecting by default)
USA only connects to Edge network
EURO loses all connectivity and finds no networks (T-Mobile, Simple, etc)
JAPAN loses all connectivity and finds no networks
AUS loses all connectivity but finds AT&T network
AUS2 loses all connectivity but finds AT&T network
I set the radio to AUS just for kicks but afterwards whenever I go back to "'set radio band"' the menu is blank and I can't restore the "'automatic"' setting again, so be careful.
Luckily I have a recent Nandroid backup that I'm restoring from right now.
Weird and too bad we can't force it to a certain frequency like 850mhz or something.

My old Samsung Wave allowed this. I would lock it to 850mhz 3G Wish the Nexus had this option too.

That's another thing I can't seem to figure out how to do on this phone..view the current frequency it is using or force it to use a certain one....I've searched for third party apps to do this and the service menu but nothing...

Happened to me too. Scared me. I had to click the tab that said CDMA preferred and change it to GSM only, then back and it worked. Ended up having to reboot to get a data signal again though.
When data loads, it only shows :15. I'm not sure if that means HSPA+:15? In which case, it isn't achieving HSPA+:21..

AUS network should connect to the 900MHz frequency while AUS2 connects to 850MHz.
Customers that use Telstra Next-G (which is Australia's fastest 3G/H+ network) select AUS2 and get much greater network speeds. I believe this is the same frequency as AT&T in the USA.
Other operators such as Vodafone AU and Optus use the 900MHz frequency as do most Euro networks.

I had this issue too... and I've seen it reported elsewhere.
Be careful fiddling with this!
So I'm on a CyanogenMod 10 nightly, and I am having the problem of the Preferred Network Mode setting not sticking, like several other users apparently, and after searching the forum I have concluded that there is no actual solution yet. Right now I can get to 4G LTE by manually setting to LTE/GSM/WCDMA in the Preferred settings, but it always reverts back after reboot. Apparently this does not happen to everybody; how should I fix this?
I posted in the CM Nightlies thread but no one seemed to notice. I hope this can get to the devs so they can fix this eventually I guess.
The following may be of use
http://code.google.com/p/cm9-msm8960/issues/detail?id=39
According to that, this is a hard-coded problem caused by the settings in the two places not matching?
Try going to your dialer and typing *#*#4636#*#*
Use that dialog to set it to what you want and hopefully it will stick then?
I never encountered this problem myself because I never want my phone on LTE as the battery life is pitiful as is and LTE only makes it worse.
Mine is set to WCDMA only on quattrimus cm10 and it sticks no problem.

Had the same problem, except that it dropped data service every 10 mins or so. Didn't even had to reboot. I could fix that by changing the network settings from lte/wcdma to gsm/wcdma. Another thing I witnessed when on lte that it would recover data connection when the process was restarted e.g. when activating and deactivating airplane mode.
Unlike most people, I'm actually wanting to keep it on LTE only, since I just keep data off until I need it, and when I need it I want full speed.
The phone always reverts back to GSM/WCDMA, turning off LTE.
I messed around in *#*#4636#*#* but it didn't really do anything.
I've been having the same problem on my Razer Phone 2. I don't think this is specific to the phone itself, but. I'm getting desperate for a solution. I change the preferred network type in the *#*#4636#*#* menu, I get LTE fine..... As long as I don't restart the phone or go on/off with airplane mode. Then I have to do it all over again. Does anyone know how to make this stick?
Hopefully some of you smarter guys can help me. Where my OG used
To pick up lte it doesnt anymore. I know the signal is there because my
Daughter can still get it. Sometimes if i go to settings and switch off lte and then switch it back on I'll get a signal.
Anybody heard of yhis happening?
Make sure lte/cdma is on. Try setting Connection Optimizer to off and try updating profile. Or maybe even an airplane toggle.

They are updating a lot of towers on and off
just be patient, same in my area
You can always do ##72786# to let the phone reactivate and ensure everything sharkboy said is checked. Hope it helps

Mine does the same thing lte has been released since September in my area and I can't hold lte either my only option is to enable and disable airplane mode and the phone will immediately pick it up. I'm on replacement number two and all have done the same thing.
guys you can try this, go to the dialer and enter in ##3282# (##data#). go down to the advanced sub panel and edit the Next LTE Scan to 300, BSR timer to 120, BSR Max Timer to 300. You will need your MSL for this to work. Battery life will not decrease. This setting change will change the time frame cycle between scanning for a LTE signal to 2-5 minutes. For example if your connected to LTE and loose connection the phone will automaticly scan for it again in 2 minutes instead of the stock set time.
I reconnect my LGOG one last time before I shipped her off to her new owner and I quickly realize what I hated about the phone. Crappy 4g connection actually crappy radios overall.

Just in case someone who has this wonderful phone needs even better battery life try switching from 4g to 3g.
Here you are you may have to fiddle around with it to get it working I stick with the preloaded radio toggles,
CDMA auto PRL = 3G
EVDO Only = 1G or 2G network not certain.
And then of course your LTE/CDMA auto.
Good luck https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...Oqy5H3znZLfFLmawQ&sig2=B9QbzOsLdQ-UdV8KD_f-sQ
You can reach that menu by dialing *#*#4636*#*#.
Remember that if you force LTE only most carriers won't let you make/receive calls nor SMS
The app seems to make things easier, and I've tried on Verizon I have forced LTE and I can still make and receive calls, I've also forced 3g and I'm still able to makes and receive calls
Can someone help me understand how to use this app? The toggles sometimes work, but sometimes doesn't. I'm trying to use this on T-mobile and so I set it to either LTE /GSM or only GSM. I don't know how to get GPS set either. I think the MM update made the radio buggy... Any help or advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have only tested this on Verizon, so that may be an issue, yet when I first installed it I had a little trouble as well try switching between the mentioned toggles, and there is a setting that says select radio band try switching that, I hope this helps good luck
As regards to your GPS that should be in your settings app under location

I toggle the 'location' button but this app says the GPS is disconnected! And my maps churn when this happens. When it's says connected, it loads fine. But toggling that off and on doesn't always make the values change in this app. The information in this app seems more accurate then the phones stock settings.
