I just exchanged my Photon for the epic touch today. and I'm very happy with it the phone is amazing. But the screen is not as bright as my photon was. And when I compared it to my wife's epic, the epic is definitely brighter, is this normal or do I possibly have a defective screen.
If someone can compare these two phone side by side the epic touch & epic please let me know which one is brighter to you because I thought the epic touch... amoled plus screen was supposed to be better in every way
PS. this is the first time I've ever posted on this site. XDA rock's !!!
Did you turn off the automatic setting?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
yes I did, and I set both phones to maximum brightness. I compare the settings screen with the black background and the white letters. And the letters just seem brighter on the epic
Try changing auto adjust screen power(adjust for image...) it seemed to help for me. stock though it is pretty dang dimm.
are you looking at it on a browser? cause browser has a auto dim on it as well. have to press menu key and then change it there.
I just compared max brightness to my gfs epic and honestly they looked about the same...i do think that the brightness is not as bright on the lower half of the scale..currently keep it about halfway

I have both phones in front of me. The whites arent as white as the Epic but at night my Epic was always too bright. People would have brightness down and still use Screen Filter on that phone. I actually like it better...less headaches from staring at my phone so much...EDIT..actually max brightness is almost identical but auto seems a little less white

thanks a lot ervman1 mine definitely is not as bright. I will be changing it tomorrow thanks a lot.

I had the evo 3d and loved the phone, but now that I have this I see a slew of people saying that they can't stand the resolution...
I really can't tell a difference lol.. I see NO pixelation and the only difference for me over qHD is the fact that things are slightly larger.
I personally love the screen on this phone compared to the 3d so much crisper its incredible.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
text on the 3d was sharper. It took take me a day or two to get used to the resolution on the epic touch, but it is a beautiful display. I like both displays equally for different reasons.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
I absolutely love the screen and resolution on the EpTouch compared to my 3D! I am not a fan of the 16:9 displays. Everything looks squished, and I had a hell of a time typing on the 3D.
Screen is way better compared to 3D. Even though the lower resolution.
Sent from my Epic Touch using xda premium
You can notice the stair steps on the diagonal lines in text but it isn't really bothersome after a brief adjustment period. Personally I have no problems with the resolution and it is nice that all the software works without new updates.
I've owned the evo 3d, photon 4g, and now the epic 4g touch. The epic 4g touch's screen hands down beats them both. I too don't understand about people who complain about the text as it looks fine to me. I mean do people really zoom in that much to notice the pixles in the text?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Change the density to 200 and even try to give a ****. I did that today and i'm thrilled. Screw those extra pixels, lol.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
200 dpi is tits, yea same here with the 16:9 display, it was a turn off and also bad multi touch issues with the e3D.
this screen , im not seeing a lower resolution really, and as someone said the multitouch , this can have as many as 10 different touches at same time
for fun i took my cousins iphone 2g and compared the brightness of the both while on google.com and while my gs2 had crisper colors and looked better while looking at it from different angles but when looked straight down on both devices the old iphone 2g was much brighter than mine.. both devices were at 100% brightness was wondering if this was something that might be wrong with my phone which i hope not because I've had no other issues with it like lines or bad pixels and I've read that this phone should be like a lighthouse at 100% brightness so i really wouldnt want to exchange it and end up getting 1 with everything else bad.... sighhhhh smh

thanks for being a smart ass but just to say ive been using an iphone since day 1 and had to switch when i saw this beast but this was my first n only real question about spec type or maybe mine being faulty so far about it n i get your idiotic response............
Google has a lot of white. Is the "adjust screen power " option on under display? That will dim the screen automatically under full brightness
if you disable auto dim, then the brightness can be adjusted to the same level as iphone
you don't want to see this phone at max power, it can literally Burn your eyes
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
thank you for the real responses i had the auto dim disabled ( if you mean the auto bright not sure if you do) but didnt have the adjust screen power unchecked and now that made a huge difference way brighter WOW!!.. thanks thinking i will be leaving the screen power checked.....lol
Lol yeah at full brightness this thing Is insanely bright

haha no worries man we're all just trying to get to know our phones better Glad you're more satisfied with it now!
I always have the brightness cranked when i'm at work because I go outside for smoke breaks and I like bring able to read my phone.

There's also a browser brightness in the menu after you open up the browser
Glad you got it sorted out, but I still think the iPhones' screens are nicer. If only they came out with a 4.5 inch iPhone with Cyanogen Mod .
My gs2 is so bright I need sunglasses to look at it.

the iphone screen might look nicer because you can fit it in the cup of your hand while you squint and pinch to enlarge each web page so you can read.. my only dilemma was thinking a 2g was brighter because i didnt get to test it with my 4 before i sold it but after seeing the full brightness of this I'm waaaayyyyyyyy over it...lol
how many have devices like this? It doesnt seem to disappear on mine until about half brightness up.. and even there i can slightly tell. is this a problem on most phones or only some? Also with light usage i'm losing over 10% per hour, doesnt seem right at all
All AMOLED screens have that issue at low brightness, it just varies from phone to phone. Give it a few charge cycles before you start looking at the battery. The battery on my Nexus drained extremely quickly when I first got it but it's been lasting longer and longer with each passing day (3 so far)
My screen is the same, you need to be at half brightness to get a decent image. Auto brightness in full darkness makes you think that the screen is totally broken.
yours has like bands of a different shade too? mine has one thick one on the right of the screen and it's pretty annoying.. about to go into the city tomorrow to exchange it but if there all like that then i dont know
I went in to the store, and they said that they wouldn't switch it out.
Mine looks fine at lowest brightness. I use mine mostly at.about 10% brightness and look great.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Yes ! I thought that mine was also broken. It is good to know i am not alone .
can we get a screenshot?
Would it even show in a screenshot? Yes, it's AMOLED... that's the way it is. More than worth it.
It wouldn't show in a screenshot since this is a hardware related issue. And I don't think it's normal if it has brighter spots like explained. Mine isn't as smooth as you would expect either at lower brightness levels but it is not like explained by the OP.

All SAMOLEDs sacrifice clarity and color representation for slightly better black levels. Just the nature of the screen technology. All 4 Samsung models (and all 7 phones) I've come across have it.

in denial???
I've never seen the banding effect before, and this is coming from someone in a household with two out-of-commission Galaxy S', two GSIIs, a Focus, and my Nexus. The PenTile screen door effect can get to me if I'm looking for it, but that's the only SAMOLED issue I'm familiar with.

I actually like the slightly grainy look mine has at lower brightness levels
Would Voodoo Control be compatible with this? It was an awesome feature that my Nexus S had!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Not only is mine grainy at low brightness, it also has a pink and green tinge (in opposite sides of the screen)
It doesn't seem to happen on the 1st gen AMOLED (Nexus one, not grainy at low light) or S-AMOLED (Galaxy S, it did have an overall blue tint, but it was on the WHOLE screen)
Not completely noticeable, but would have expected better. At 40% or higher, its barely noticeable.
Got the same problem 40-50% and its barely noticable, any lower and i can see much distortion.
I know its a hardware thing but is this something that might be fixed with a future update or are we stuck with this?
The screen will look grainy on white/grey backgrounds at lower brightness settings, but there should not be any vertical/horizontal banding on the screen.
My first phone had a vertical bar of banding going down the entire screen, and bothered the crap out of me. Went in this morning and had it swapped with a Nexus that has no issues. For the price that we're paying for this phone (especially those with International unlocked imports) it better be perfect.
yup, i only ever see it in one place (the grain), and thats on the store before anything loads (an all gray background). Don't see it on white or anything else... that i know is pentile.
Galaxy Note is similar at lower brightness levels, must be AMOLED.
iPhone 4S is best if reading at lowest brightness levels is very important,
but in brighter light the Nexus and Note look amazing.
I dont understand why these newer screens just look worse in coloration to me. It seems like all these new phones have a blue or green tint to the screens. I went to look at a Epic 4g touch in the store today because I love the form factor but the screen doesnt look as good to me. Is this fixable with some sort of calibration? Or is the hue always there? I want a new phone but I dont know what to do! I like the screen of my old one more!
What say you XDA experts! Looking forward to your responses!
I think you're 100% right. I remember comparing my old G2x screen to the display unit at the sprint store and being quite turned off by it. It even took me a few weeks to get used to the "bluish" color of the Epic... however.. I do so love that deep black. Wow.
Aagghh! So there's just no way to fix it? Seems like the only neutral screen these days is the 4gs

Check out "Screen Adjuster" by Netman in the market. It let's you adjust the RGB values of the screen, as well as the contrast.
Watching videos on the GS2 is very hard on the eyes if there are a lot of dark scenes... Most of the detail gets lost because of the deep black, even with the brightness turned up to 100%. This app lets me crank up the contrast as well so I can actually see detail in dark scenes.
Essential free app, in my opinion. It can be set to autorun at system startup, or you can run it on demand (that's how I use it).
Any way someone could post comparison screen shots? Would be interested to see how neutral one can get it. Also does using that program cause more battery drain?

There's a setting to adjust the colors to make it less saturated. Lighter colors especially white will never be pure white, then again there is no true black on an LCD

So it wont ever look as white as my evo 4g? Agh. I think I'll just wait for a Tegra 3 phone.

Before I used the program, I could watch 2 full-length movies streaming 3G via Netflix and still be at 45-50% battery. After I started using the program, my battery usage didn't seem to change, at least not that I've noticed.
I recently got an evo lte for my son basically to use as a small tablet. I cant help notice that the screen is way brighter. Now ive always seen the evo people use this as a defense when someone says an s3 is better then the evo but i just always brushed it off. Its not just mine either my gf is the same way. The brightness on both phones is turned all the way up. Ill post sy side pics shortly
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Its well known. Different screen technology. I have both phones and was one of the folks that prefer the EVO screen, at first. Now I prefer the deep blacks of the SG3.
Trade-offs.
Personally, I don't use my phone outdoors much in the direct sunlight, so this definitely isn't a requirement for me.
Bear in mind the SGS3 uses actually a technically superior technology to LCD... an LCD has a backlight, with pixels that are flipped on and off and the backlight shines through them. So black couldn't be farther from black - it's grey at best, as you could use an LCD screen to light your way down a darkened hallway even with a fully "black" screen. This also makes contrast ratio pretty bad.
The AMOLED (key letters in there being OLED) display by contrast has pixels that light - little LED's. There's no backlight, so black is black - like phone off black. It's a much, much better picture.
I have my brightness set to "auto", so I haven't noticed it being any dimmer than my older HTC phones, but I definitely appreciate the picture and contrast.
I guess i just love my s3 so much i thought it was invincible lol
