Focus to the Surround - Windows Phone 7 General

So I cracked the screen on my Samsung Focus a couple of days ago, luckily I have insurance so they gave me an HTC Surround. At first I was quite excited to try out a new Windows Phone, but after my 1st day of the HTC im really starting to miss my Focus, the AMOLED is by far the best screen out there and having the USB tethering on the Focus was really helpful at times, plus the battery life on the Focus is better.
Two perks of the HTC:
1. Build quality
2. (and the most exciting) I FINALLY get to try out the DFT Freedom ROM
I am in the process RSP(ing) right now.

HTC Touch Pro2 Vs HTC Magic

Hi i hope this will put those minds at rest for the ones that are not sure htc magic or htc touch pro2 read on.
Well i ordered my htc magic recieved it next day opened the box a very nice well made phone apart from being abit plastiky all over.
Using the phone was great you cant go wrong with the android software it really is a dream to use espeacially all the free apps at your disposal.
Well after 2 days this phone started to wear off me it was all down to the battrey irm afraid i was charging it up after each day not a good start.
I decided to finally send it back on a 14 day return i then ordered the HTC Touch pro2.
Now when i opened the box i was very impressed with the build quality compared to that of the htc magic it just blows it away by a mile.
Pure time quality and efort went into making this handset not just rushed of the trackline.
The operating system is wm 6.1 though but a free upgrade from htc to 6.5 is imminent any day now.
The interface feels alot smoother than previus handsets i had ie htc diamond the touch flow system is faster but the most important ascpect about this handset is great for battrey life.
My first full charge lasting 3 full days thats with moderate useage as i did the same with the htc magic but that depleted in just 1 day.
Tomtom 7 works great on this htc touch pro2 open the screen out and rest it on the dashboard better than the tomtom devices anyday.
So now you can see why i chose the htc pro2 over the htc magic android is great dont get me wrong but the battrey dying so quickly does not have a long lasting apeal to the handset.
I bet you will soon get tiredsome of recharging the handset each day where as the htc touch pro 2 can go on for days without charging.
Also Touch Pro2 will have android soon it is possible just a matter of time.
The htc touch pro2 was my choice due to battrey lasting 3 days and build quality and the fact that android is a possibility soon on this handset so i have the best of both worlds.
It beats the google phone htc magic hands down at its own game.
I hope this puts all those minds at rest any questions please do not hesitate in contacting me or pm me but for now i give the HTC Touch Pro2 smartphone of the year 2009 anyday.
PS if i did not help in changing your mind irm sure this guy will have fun.

nice, i'm glad you posted this, and it's nice to hear you actually played with both phones so you can compare.
One thing I would like to hear your thoughts on is the size of the device.
The size difference between the phones are quite different and that's what's hindering me between either phones
size comparison between both phones well the htc magic is thin but tall and the touch pro2 is slightly thicker but you hardly notice the thickness between the both the magic feels very plastiky the pro feels like well a phone a very well made phone so size comparison between the both there is not much difference at all having used both devices but expect the touch pro to be slightly heavier and thicker.

OMG, my head hurts. Please use paragraphs and spaces...
^I'm also dizzy from reading this but, thanks for the comparison
WinMo is far superiour. LOL @ any other mobile OSs.
I don't like the design of the Magic. There is something repuslive in it. No keyboard = FAIL !!!!
Thanks for the review as well, but please use paragraphs and periods in your subsequent posts...
This is exactly what I was asking myself. I have been leaning towards touch pro 2 but did not know if laying out the extra $$$ was going to be worth it. I believe you have answered that question, thanks.
I have had or still do have: N95, Wing, 8525, Iphone, G1, Shadow, Blackberry 8320, Javelin, Storm, Touch Pro1, Tilt and probably others that just isn't coming to mind right now.
Now I have the Rhoduim and it is the best device I have owned to date, by far. Accept the battery cover could be better.
TP2!!!
Just 2 reasons: hardware keyboard and WM
Don't even compare it to the magic. Compare it to something with a higher caliber such as the HTC Hero or atleast a next gen android with a keyboard.
The comparison was hands on, meaning that the Hero would be hard to do as it isn't out yet. It's also good for those that are making the choice right now and not waiting till the Hero or Lancaster come out (the G1 is available but he neither had it nor is it the latest gen available as you said).
Thanks. I appreciate this post, as I am also looking at these two phones.

HTC7 vs Samsung Focus on ATT

So I posted last night about my Focus going down for the count, and well they don't have any in stock currently but I can wait 5-7 business days for one or get a HD7 has anyone tried both here? I know the expandable memory and AMOLED is an advantage on Focus but which on is better for someone who already knows how to use WP7 just want to figure my best option.
They are essentially the same. I have both. Hd7 has a larger screen. The focus has a louder speaker I'm my opinion.
Sent from my T9295 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
For your sake do NOT downgrade to the HD7s. The battery life, even post mango, is comical at best. The build quality is not even half as good, the SLCD screen is not on par with samoled, and the buttons will almost certainly be hit during any game. As far as 1st Gen devices go, focus and DVP reign supreme.
I had the HD7s for a while, until I dropped it in a glass of Jack and Coke (long story)...but I ended up getting a Focus to replace it. The screen on the HD7s is much larger than the Focus but nowhere as good. I liked how the HD7s felt in my hand, has a little weight behind it whereas the Focus is the lightest phone i've ever had. Can't really tell a difference in battery life, but I used them nonstop so I always have to charge them anyway. But like Anthonok said, they're basically the same although with HTC you're able to flash different roms.

Nah...the HD7 is sweet and all, but it doesn't have a WP7 enhancing SAMOLED. I had an HD7, I also have other non-OLED based phones, but with WP7, I firmly believe, because of WP7's style, there is no better display than OLED based. I can honestly say my Focus has not gotten old on me. Having that beautiful tile-based OS on the perfect black background charms me to no end.
You can go ahead and try an HD7, but I bet within the return period you might be tempted to return it for the Focus because you already know the charm of SAMOLED with WP7. However, bare in mind, within 1 week the Focus S will be released. It will be a substantial improvement on the regular Focus with SAMOLED+ and greatly increased specs, hardware and features.
Thanks guys Focus it is and noticed the screen difference at the store, and WP7 would do much better if the reps knew anything about after I showed an RSC how to utilize it he said it would be easier to push.

[Q]Anyone upgrade from the hd2?

I am on my 3rd hd2 due to previous BS.
I have not seen any other phone even catch my attention. My HD2 is a beast, but I know the Galaxy SII does have faster download speeds.
So, anyone make the switch?
I made the switch as well. I originally got the HD2 because I was tired of the iPhone 4 not having 3G service on T-Mobile.
It's a night and day difference between the phones in terms of download speed. I got max 4-6mbps down with the HD2, but I get 10-16mbps down with the S II. Also, you'll find the picture quality of both the screen and camera are better on the S II
I made the switch as well. It has been a hard decision but the phone is starting to grow on me. I became very well versed with the HD2 and it's nuances. I started with Cookies Home Tab mods on Winmo 6.5 to learning how to mount and unmount APKs and scripting with 2.3.7. The HD2 was my journey into Android modding. Funny enough, My first smart phone was a G1 but at that time I wasn't into and didn't know what I could do with android. Coming from Symbian, I was like, hey, it just works.
As time passed though, I was promoted to be in the field as an I.T. consultant. The HD2 became more of a functional necessity rather than just a cool phone I could mess with from time to time. With that said, things just had to work... and at times, had to work fast and also multi-task better. The HD2 started to feel its age. I needed a phone that was an all out improvement over the HD2 so I wouldn't look back.
Unlocked boot-loader, larger screen with higher resolution and brightness, faster processor, faster data speeds (and even better signal attenuation), lack of hard buttons (wear and tear), lighter phone (higher chance of surviving a drop) and just all around newer technology. And the best thing for me was MORE AVAILABLE RAM
I was happy I made the choice. With a good ROM with the sgs2, it's simply graceful. With the increased RAM and performance, I can do everything a lot easier. I still have my HD2 in pretty decent condition running ICS but it's just for kicks. The Tmous version of the Galaxy S2 is very young so with that you won't get nearly as much legacy knowledge or development as you do from the HD2 subforums. I'd say give it time but with the available ROMS, they have this phone very solid.
It's an all around better phone in every aspect. Even the audio is better and louder. The ONLY thing I miss is a notification LED but I'm learning to live without. HD2 owners should already know the LED notification issues we've had with previous ROMS as it is.
EDIT:
A few things you'd have to get use to in the change. The phone (without a cover) will fit anything that you used to hold your HD2 in granted the HD2 had a cover. BUT if you decide to get a back over for the phone, you'll need something else to hold it in because it's larger as it wider and longer. The audio plug port is now on top instead of the bottom so if you had a car setup, you might have to move things around a little. The charger is a micro-usb port and it's almost in the same location as the HD2. The power button is on the top right side of the phone so that will take a little getting used to. It does have a 2MP front facing camera so that's another bonus. Without a cover the phone is still easy to hold and doesn't feel like it might slide out of your hand. It's quite light for it's size and thin. The buttons on the phone are capacitive with the exception of the volume rocker (on the upper left of the phone) and the power button. The speaker is on the bottom left of the rear of the phone but it's quite loud. 1 LED flash as opposed to 2 with the HD2 but still seems to put out the same amount of lumens. The camera is more recessed than the HD2 and is flush with the phone body so no more scratched camera frame. The SD card IS hot swappable so no need to remove the battery. The plastic back cover is very thin so take care in taking it off and on (no brushed aluminum like the HD2). It's a lot but that's pretty much all I can think of for now. Hope this helps.
Great info. . . Same with me, the HD2 is the first true Android phone I started Modding(I still have my g1. But face it, there was no competition for the iPhone for along time). Before, I was a total iPhone man. I turned my iPhone into what it should have been as I did with my HD2.
My HD2 is a extremely solid performer. It is running at about 98% functionality, LED works just fine as does everything else unlike most earlier android flashed HD2's.
Sounds like I will be making the switch as soon as I come across a worthy deal.
Just tough for me to move from a device that treated me so well.
I had an hd2 before this, and still use the hd2 for experimentation and goofing around. (Playing with ICS on it right now.) I loved the hd2, there wasn't a single phone you could do more with.
This phone, however, is amazing. I love this thing. Just don't expect so many roms to choose from. You'll love the upgrade, it's definitely the smoothest phone I've used to date.
I had it pretty cool not all that

Now to find one for a good deal. I'm also thinking the white one is the way to go.
Development here compared to the hd2 is night and day if u messed with the hd2 a lot as I did u probably will find ur self bored here just a heads up.... hd2 and vibrant days I could flash rom's daily here I've been on the same one for over a month. The Roms are quality tho just not that many.

I recently dropped my HD2 & spiderwebbed the screen. Oddly enough, it still actually functions perfectly, but it's hard to view the screen and it has sharp edges on the screen itself. I'll be keeping it as a backup MP3 player/portable HD, camera, etc.
Since there is no real equivalent on TMobile, I went with the T989. Performance and capabilities are big improvements, 1080P video, dual core, 4G, etc. Hardware is really far beyond the HD2, but it's been a bit frustrating learning Android, and trying to replicate how perfectly customized for my wants/needs I had my HD2. I'm getting there, though, and I'm getting more and more confident I'll get this new phone dialed in as well or better than the HD2.
I switched from hd2 to the sensation and that didn't last long. Now I'm with this beauty.
Hd2 is still a beast though and now my son uses it.

As far as customization goes. I work until it's damn near perfect.
I run SPB with a Nexus ROM on my HD2. I swapped out the MMS APK and a few others. It runs a bit overclocked just fine too. Kinda funny though, if I juice it to the Max. I keep up with a Sprint Evo just fine
Also does the current widget work on the GS2? Since it never worked on the turd pile Vibrant I tried to replace my HD2 with?
No current widget doesn't work. Not on any samsung phones that I'm aware of.

Damn, I love that damn thing. LoL
I had an HD2 all rooted and moded and then the SG2 came out and I sold it. It was an awsome phone and I loved it even more when I had android on it. Windows blows on that phone lol.
I had pretty bad experiance with hd2 . Then i move to blackberry 9780 and now on this one.
Problem on hd2 was hardware issue so nothing to do with OS. I simply hate htc hardware.

I had the euro version for 6mo the tmo since June '10.
Absolutely adored the device. Countless hours of winnow, then android flashing entertainment.
I bought the sg2 just to mess, expecting to return it, but the speed, elegance, enhancemence and speed won me over.
Sold my hd2 for just about what I paid.
I believe I'll be quite happy.
+1 It's quite shameful actually.

Just be patient. Remember how long it took to get an sd build of android to boot on it? Or the fact that it took cotulla and the guys over a year to get magldr so we could boot them off nand? Plus the advantage there was now the hd2 has 100% aosp base, so it's very easy to work with, hence all the roms. Plus, they can port from either the htc desire or the nexus one with very few changes, because the hardware is almost identical. The only phone with very very similar hardware for us is the skyrocket. Once we get cm, (and we will), we'll have an aosp base to work off of.
Ignore the kids, be patient, wait a few weeks, and we'll see what rolls in. This phone has barely been out 2 months... 2 months after the hd2 was released I hspl was barely started, let alone working.

I physically clapped when I read this. I've been on a lot of sub-forums here at XDA but I've never seen the behavior that I see here. People here are overly sensitive, impatient, belligerent and down right rude and immature. I always had a great amount of respect for the members and developers so I'm a little taken back with the behavior here. I guess any HD2 to prospect SGS2 buyers should take note to that.

HTC ONE M9 vs Samsung Galaxy S6

Dear all,
time has come (and I got a great deal from my provider) to leave my beloved ONE M7 and upgrade to new phone.
My obvious two choices (both at the same price) are HTC One M9 and the Sammy S6.
I have never owned (apprt from my first free smartphone 8 years ago a crappy Sammy) anything but HTC and I must say that all in all I am quite happy with the company.
That been said I am in big dilemma this year which one to choose.
I was hopping to help with my decision giving me some feedback from your experience with M9 (especially after the camera software update).
Warm Regards
Both will be a great upgrade from the M7, although that in itself was also a lovely device.
That is a hard decision. I chose the HTC m9 because I'm on at&t and the Samsung will probably never get root. If the s6 was rootable (which it should be for you) I would have bought it no question. The camera on the s6 is the undisputed champion of cameras on smartphones. The camera on the HTC is fine but not great. The new design of the s6 is more exciting this year, while the HTC is about the same as last year. From what I've heard, the s6 is very speedy and fluid but so is the HTC. Decisions decisions.
Ive had the s6 for 2 weeks. Beleive me get the htc. Theres some rubbish things about it
I have been scathing of the M9, but the more I use it, the more I appreciate it.
Simple things like being able to get straight out of the dialer after a call to the desktop without a long lag, the ability to get vibrate or silent mode like Kitkat simply by turning down the volume, SD card storage (128gb S6 will be a unicorn I think or silly money), a perfectly good camera which performs equally as good as my Note 4 did, very fast operation, and equal battery life to the S6 are just a few reasons I went for the M9.
The lag on the S6 will be minor but apparent on the S6 after a little while of use, and a decent camera is no substitute for a lack of storage, fragile body, and huge protruding camera modules.
upgraded from the M7 myself didnt need to really as its still a great device, im loving the M9 just really waiting for original development to kick off properly, flar2 already working on his EX kernel which i know will eventually be awesome, development on HTC's is pretty much 2nd to none so is always a major plus for me, anyway I couldnt be happier with my choice to go with the m9, the camera nis very decent once you tweak the settings a bit and im sure this device will only get better with time and more mature software, its a hard decision granted and i doubt you will have regrets regardless what you choose. just my 2 pennies
Thanks a lot everyone you have been a great help.My mind is made up so it's M9 all the way! I have to wait a couple of days to get my hands on it but I am sure it will be worth the wait. Just one more question coming from the M7 was it easy to transfer contacts photos and music to M9?
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Free mobile app
I use HTC backup via dropbox for my settings, manually backup my music and photo's to my PC and all my contacts are stored on google so was completely painless, once complete was all setup in samreway as my M7 apart from a few minor settings,
Also there is a feature that pairs your devices via NFC and can transfer everything to your new phone via bluetooth but I didnt try that.

I just upgraded from a DNA to M9. I transferred almost 6 GB of music wirelessly from phone to phone very quickly. On the M9, go to Settings, scroll down to the Personal section, and tap on Get Content From Another Phone. It'll walk you through it. This for me was the easiest and fastest way.

Good choice. Other than the camera the s6 isnt as good as its hyped to be. Screen has awful whites and weird yellow . Pink. Green . Blue tints all over devices. Ive had 2. One was yellow. Next was pink. Its an issue all over xda. Most have this horrid problem. Touchwiz is boring. Design gets boring. Its almost too light. Like your holding air. Audio is pants. Battery sucks. Even with a custom rom. I havent enjoyed the s6 atall. Mainly down to the horrible screen tints that seems to pretty much be on all the handsets. Smh
I am using two devices for some time now, but I've had some issues with my S6 Edge, the screen rotation problem and give back to samsung and they returned back my money. HTC so far one of the best devices (M9) I've been using long time. So for so good except camera. Camera shoots bad quality photos compared to s6. 20,7mp camera is not better than m8's camera. If the camera on m9 was better, much more people would choose htc.
Between these two and ONLY these two? Probably the S6. Personally, I'd go for the G4 next month. I had massive problems with my S6, exchanged 3 times, gave up. Got the M9 for $300, and when compared to the $700 S6 it's a winner, but if the price is equal...

you asked in the HTC place, most will say M9 is better lol
I had the m8, and I'm just like you. I'm and HTC fan since the nexus one but I wasn't sure about the m9 because of the incremental update and the camera review but guess what.. I got it and its amazzzing !!
BTW, the camera is great just needs some tweaking thats all.
I never liked samsung or LG or most of the other phones, they really feel cheap but HTC feels damn premium.
Since you on the m7 it will be a big step with the m9, go for it and congratulation in advance.
Get the M9 unless camera quality is super important to you IMO. My S6 Edge had the rotation bug and I was not willing to risk getting stuck in a loop of getting defective replacements so I got the M9 to replace it. I'm not regretting it.
Things I did not like about my S6 Edge:
-Accelerometer defective out of the box
-Clueless and useless customer support. HTC support is way better
-Edge was very "sharp" feeling in hand
-Curve screen made things hard to type. Inside of my palm near my thumb kept "registering" on the screen as being touched.
-At certain angles, the whites looked pink
-Back button is on the right. WTF Samsung?
-Physical home button is still ugly, I don't like it.
-Phone is extremely light. Feels like a toy.
-Poor memory management. Apps had to keep reloading even when I had just used them.
-Touchwiz STILL has microstutters.
Things I liked about the S6 Edge:
-Screen was much brighter and more vibrant than the M9
-Camera took way better quality photos (which were upside down for me due to the rotation defect)
-Finger print reader worked flawlessly, way more convenient than PIN unlock
-First Samsung phone to look high quality
-Came with a fast charger. WTF HTC? Can't afford the extra 50 cents per phone?
-The speaker was surprisingly loud. Louder than my M9 (not nearly as good sounding, but still louder.)
I have both the m9 and a 128gb s6 edge. I love both devices for different reasons. They are both beautiful devices. That said my s6 has become my daily driver but really love both devices. I have my tablet sim in my m9 and do use it daily as well.
Having purchased (finally) my M9 I have to say after playing a bit yesterday with a friends S6 that I have no regrets what so ever. Touch Wiz is a nightmare and although the quality of construction of Samsung has apparently improved M9 is still a lot more robust and still feels like more premium. In fact my friend after playing with my M9 while I was playing with its S6 he commented "damned I made the wrong decision". BTW the let them stare motor of HTC is right on from what I can tell. Thanks guys for helping me make the right decision. ?

I had the s6 for 3 weeks. Samsung's quality control is shocking. Everything about the s6 is over rated. Screen is horrible

2 weeks with a G4

2 weeks ago i sold my HTC M8 and traded in my G3 and got a G4.
My experience over the past 2 weeks has mainly been positive, i have encountered a few bugs or irritations but generally is a good phone. I have managed to get over a day between charges.
The interface is fairly straight forward to be fair LG have not massively skinned the OS.
But i have do have a couple of things i need help or advice with, firstly the ring tone when set to a MP3 track does not always work what am i missing?
Secondly the camera shutter seems a bit too slow compared to my old HTC and also lacks a lot of the great software it possess' so now sure i can make a burst shot but can anyone suggest a great app for doing so and making a composite photo after?
Many thanks.
I've had mine for 2 weeks too and also came form the M8. My only concern is the battery. Standby is very good. It seems like it has dose already despite being on 5.1 It just drops so fast when the screen is on. do you find that too? I can just about get 3 hours of screen time.
Try this HTC camera in post 33 http://forum.xda-developers.com/2015-moto-g/general/moto-g-3rd-gen-camera-samples-t3171168/page4
