Alright, so I have clockwork 3.0.0.5 and I backed up my system before flashing a new Rom. Well I need a text message out of that back up. The system was working fine which is why I backed it up. I backed up using clockwork. Now I try to flash back to get a picture of this Text and the freaking back up wont load. it just hangs on the boot animation. Has been there for over an hour now. I don't care how I get it, but I need to get this text message. Anyone have any ideas?
Have you tried pulling the battery and wiping caches then trying to boot up?
You could wipe everything and try to restore again.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Yeah. I have done everything that I can think of.
Wipe date, wipe cache, wip dalvik, reset security. Then reload the back-up
nothing
wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik. then reload nothing
Wipe cache, reload. Reboot nothing.
I was using the Shooter Rom with the red fang remxed theme. It was slow as hell but worked. Always booted. I backed it up, loaded another rom, and now I cannot get the shooter to reload.
I hear that you can pull these thigns with the SDK. I will try anything. I need to get it.
I know it's after the fact, but this is why most of us shun CWM and use Amon Ra
He's got a point.
Can you browse the SD card, get into the backup and find the appropriate files? IDK offhand *where* the text history would be in there, but I'm sure one of these gurus knows. I'd guess it would be a matter of finding that file, flashing to a working rom, then dumping the file over top.
Mind you...this is just an educated guess.
Well the only people I know locally who flash use CWM. thats why I chose it over Amon. Does it make a huge difference? My stock rom back-up which does work and has been moved to three safe locations, was done in CWM.
How would I move the files over? I tried using a thread I found earlier and "Droid Explorer" but it didn't seem to work to well and just cleared my texts. So I tried to copy some .IMG files around and totally hosed my working back-up. Not the one with the Texts, the one I was booting from.
Yo no se....good luck with that man =/

Yea people use CWM because thats what comes with rooting but if you actually read a little through these threads and talk to anyone who has had there phone rooted over a year they will let you know Amon is the way to go.... Very few issues do you see in the forums for AmonRa - IMO
I would back up to a good workable rom then flash AmonRa and start into your new world...Unfortunately you can not recover a CWM backup in AmonRa
Since your backups are with clockwork, you would need to make a whole new set of backups using Amon Ra. However we can get you where you need to be with clockwork. First the issue with Clockwork is, you cannot wipe boot without a script. Wiping boot is manditory for restoring any backup, otherwise as you have seen the phone won't boot. So download the attached file, place it on the root of your SDCARD, then boot to recovery, flash the file like you would flash a new ROM. Then without rebooting the phone restore your backup. This should get you back up and going.
Thank you!
I'm trying it right now. After I finish rebuilding and backing up this system.
Alright so as I tried to run that Superwipe.zip, I get an error tell me that Amend scripting was deprecated by google in android 1.5 I have to switch to edify scripting. Whats that mean?

Look for calkulins format all. It's not as indepth as superwipe but it should work with the latest version of cwm.

Calkulin's is also amend-scripted, I thought VR was edify though. I know that there's an edify wipe script, but not sure what it is.

What rom is the backup of. Try to wipe everything, restore the backup, wipe cache and dalvic cache, then flash a compatible kernel. See if it boots then.

Question. I currently have Clockwork for my recovery but now when I try to boot into it via vol up and power it vibrates 3 times and I have to pull the battery and reboot the other way. I think the recovery is broken. Can this be fixed? If I flash Clockwork again will it destroy my recovery images and nand back up? Also, if i switch to Amon can it use clockworks files to back up the phone or do you need to start over? I dont want to lose my original recovery and back up since I rooted. Can anyone help? Also, my Market icon isn't changing anymore with Riptides theme since the new flash. Thanks.

It's vol down+power. I think vol up may have worked with an earlier bootloader or firmware, but it definitely doesn't work now.
Also to add on, if you made a backup with ClockworkMod recovery, you cannot restore it with RA recovery.
idk if im rite o no but i dnt thnk ur gona lose thngs if u re install clockwork cuz theres on ur sdcard. idk if im rite o wrng

Wow that was painful to read...but yes, you are correct. Nandroid backups are stored on the SD card (in different formats for AmonRA or Clockwork, depending on what you used to perform the backup). You do need to use the same recovery to restore a backup that you used to back it up in the first place, but wiping your recovery won't kill any backups you made. Repartitioning or wiping your sd card, however...

Did something change recently? Because I could have sworn that I've used them interchangeably. I've had to move the backups to different locations depending on the recovery, but usually I can get them to restore. If I'm not mistaken, they both use Nandroid to perform the backup. I think the biggest difference is ClockworkMod does an MD5 checksum, and Amon doesn't, which can cause problems if you don't disable MD5 check.
Vol down plus power.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses. Anyone have any idea about the Riptide9 theme not changing all the images though? I cleared it and flashed the theme three times now. Maybe it's the new update...
I still don't think Clockwork wipes the Dalvik/cache/battery
clockwork definitely has problems with dalvik. i use amon. adb is a bit touchy with it, but it is all around better. and also nand backups backup wimax images.
I am getting this error when ever I try to do a nand restore : Error: run ' nandroid-mobile.sh restore ' via adb!
I am running amon ra 1.8, I have the latest sprint lovers installed running 3.70, new radios, pri 1.90. Hboot 79. I've succesfully backed up and restored nands in the past but now I get this error. I've tried to backup and then immediately try to restore the backup and I get the same error so its not a corrupt backup. I have more than 6gb available on my sd card and am fully charged. I've looked in other threads and haven't found an answer. Any help is appreciated since I'm flying without a net when I flash if I can't restore my nand.
Run the command from adb shell, and it'll tell you what's wrong. Duh.
In other words, do what it tells you to do. Is it really so hard to follow instructions?
Hey man had the same problem. I was on miui and I went back to sense to update profile and flashed the new radio combo so I made a nandroid of miui first and then when I tried to restore that same back up I got the same error that you got. I'm not positive but I think that it has something to do with flashing the new radio and then switching to aosp rom. I ended up having to reflash miui and then every thing went back to working normally.

nandroid won't work if battery is low, I think if it's less than 30% charged, might want to try charging it before restoring to see if it helps...
I've had this happen with a full battery. The couple of times I had it happen I just wiped cache and dalvik. Rebooted back up, then gone back into recovery and then was able to restore the nand backup. Might give that a shot.

I had the same problem and what nefariouss is saying might work. Also, once i wiped several times and then completely turned the phone off and booted back into recovery and then it would restore. Another time i reflashed the rom that i was trying to restore and once it booted i went back to recovery, wiped all and then it would restore. Hope that helps. Just keep messing with it. I know its a pain but eventually it will restore.

if your sd card didnt partion properly this will happen.
save everything on your sd.
reboot into recovery
repartition sd card.
read that a few people running clockwork recovery have this issue frequently.

If you are trying to flash a file in recovery that has spaces in it, it will not flash and will give you that error. so 'Fresh Evo.zip' won't work, but FreshEvo.zip will work.

Download and flash this. It is a rooted stock rom (Froyo) that has NOT been deodexed. In other words, it is THE stock HTC sense rom (3.70) that will allow you to maintain root privileges. While in recovery, wipe EVERYTHING in the wipe menu EXCEPT the SD card BEFORE flashing.

This happened to me and I tried everything listed. Reformatted my SD card. Copied everything back and nand restore finished first time. Polly unrelated but the only thing different was I had upgraded my RA recovery after I had made the backup.

Same thing happened to me after I updated Amon Ra recovery after doing a nandroid backup. Desire wouldn't boot and got stuck on white screen. Tried to do the backup using ADB but each time I got to the last step it failed. So I tried clearing Dalvik cache etc and finally wiped my card using recovery. After a couple of attempts, I was able to restore the last nandroid backup. Big relief.

I was facing similar problem but thanks to @hecklbrg, It did the trick. Cheers.
I recently rooted and have been enjoying the different ROMS I am now able to use which makes my phone more enjoyable.
I wanted to ask something about backup's that I am a little confused on.
I know there are a few methods of backing up. I do the method of rebooting into recovery and backing up.
My question is, what exactly is this backing up? I would like the backup method to back up the whole ROM with everything I have set in place, kind of like a .img file of sorts on a PC.
I have been going back and forth between an ASOP (MIUI) ROM and a couple Sense based ROMS (MikFroyo and MYNS.) It is frustrating when going between each that I have to go through and reinstall everything and set it all up the way I like it.
Is there a method to create a image that I can just go into recovery, "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" then "Wipe Cache Partition" then "Calkulin's FORMAT_ALL" and then load up the saved image file that will have everthing in tact that I saved in the image file?
Thank you,
Whiteice
Simply back up everything (wimax, sd-ext, boot...) on the particular ROM you have set up, and then set up your next ROM. I use Amon_RA 2.2.1 and you can rename the actual nandroid backup to make it easier to remember which ROM it is. So you can pretty much do exactly what your asking. Once you've set them up, you can easily restore different ROMs.
You can backup an entire rom with rom manager with clockwork. It saves everything the way you left it, from your settings, apps, and even call log.

trust me if your not to sure about what you are doing at least try and get Amon on your phone. It IMO and quite a few others is safer than Clockwork. Clockwork and Rom Manager are for beginners I will admit but before something goes crazy try and flash over to Amon..
edit: to answer you question though nandroid is like system restore in windows... you will get back everything exactly as you left it.
the nandroid backup in your recovery mode does back up everything. once you back it up then flash whatever you are flashing and you dont like it, u just go back and click nandroid restore and it will go back to exactly how it was when u backed it up
Quick question in the new amon what do we check when making a backup.
I'm used to 2.2 and just hitting make a backup.
And just like someone said above, Rom Manager and clockwork may be for beginners but seasoned users also use this. I find it simple to use and flashed about 12 Roms in a couple of months and I have 6 backups stored in the Rom Manager backup list. Very simple to restore back to one of your saved backups as well as easy to save new ones.
And one thing I have picked up about AMon RA is that in the newer versions, make sure you toggle the verification to off so that if a rom or whatever it is you're trying to flash is unsigned, it will not give an error and you'll be able to download.

After you select install from zip, right before you check install form sd card, there should be the option on that screen to toggle signature verification.
That's awesome to know. I guess I never looked at that part of the screen before I flash something because I never get an error. So now if it happens I'll give it a thorough look over. Thanks a lot Roxxorz.

So what exactly were you trying to do?
last night i made a nandroid backup and when i went to restore it, it quit right away and said"nandroid file corrupt" or something to that effect. when i compared backupo to eachother i noticed the md5 files were not being created, so i tried reflashing amon ra 2.3 it didnt work even went back to cwm and then to amon ra and it didnt work. any help with this would be greatly appreciated. thanks!
Are you renaming the backup file and if so are you using special characters in the name? Also, what do you mean when you say amon RA is creating an md5? I am unaware that it did such a thing. You said you also switched to CWM. Were you able to make a nandroid backup with it? By the way, did you happen to rename the folder containing the nandroid backup?

no not changing the name at all and i dont think ive done anything concerning the recovery since the last nandroid i made. the nandroid files normally contain 9 files inside the new ones i try and make only contain 8 and the one missinf is the md5 file, no i havent tried with cmw i will now though gimme a sec and ill report back. thank you for your help.
Yes it creates a full useable backup with CMW, but i would love to figure out whats wrong with Amon_Ra. Maybe downgrade it and then upgrade would that maybe work? ill try it when i get home from work.
Edit: I think i know what may be wrong- With CMW when i try and wipe dalvik it says "unknown volume for path [sd/ext]" and last night when i tried to flash a new rom it didnt format the sd/ext because when i went to the app drawer all the old apps were still there in the new rom. and now that i look back at the back up log for the back up i just created in CMW it says no sd/ext found. so i guess i need to fix the sd/ext path. would this some how be dome in dtapp2sd?

I get it. You're referring to the nandroid.md5 file "within" the backup itself. Why do you have 9 files inside your backup? Are you selecting to back up EVERYTHING when you make a nandroid backup? If so, you don't need to do that. With amon RA, you only need to use the default selections, unless you have apps stored on sd-ext partition then you would also select it. Prior to making a nandroid backup, I suggest you wipe the cache & dalvik, if you're not already doing so.

The SD-ext should have been detected. I know it is in amon RA and you're right, if your apps were still present after a fresh install of a new rom, the ssd-ext was not properly wiped. As for dt app2sd, wouldn't you have to repartition your SD card? I mean, you would have to create the EXT2 Partition. Then use the option to upgrage EXT2 to EXT3, at least that's how you would do it via amon RA. I don't use CWM.

That is correct. It is also a good idea to make nandroid of your wimax. With amon RA, the nandroid will have have names similar to BDEAS-20110409-1532. The letters prior to the first hyphen tells you what was backed up. B for boot, D for data, E for ext partition, A for Android.secure and S for system. The middle portion is the date the nandroid was created. I usually rename the middle portion. Anyway, take care and enjoy your weekend.

I'm on the Mikg 2.1 + 3.0 rom, and ran into a problem trying to restore my backup after briefly trying out another rom. Using AmonRA, after restoring my backup it loads like normal but when the lockscreen comes up there is no ring or way to unlock the phone. Does anybody know what happened? Is my backup no good? Going to have to reload the stock rom to get back into my phone.

Just flash the rom over your setup now, fastest way to fix it for right now. Or boot back into recovery and wipe cache/dalvik
I guess I will switch back to clockwork recovery since I have used it to restore my stock backup before. Don't know what happened to this backup that I made on AmonRA, but if it doesn't work I won't be using it anymore.
I'm having the same problem. I have done multiple nandroid backups with Amon_Ra that are not restoring properly...
I don't flash over anything critical, but it's becoming an inconvienience.
Are you saying that CWM is not doing this?
I hae only used amon ra after rooting with no problems. Might be a bad recovery. Just my 2cents.

All of you guys are using Amon and having restore issues.. Not something I have really ever heard of. Is it a 32gb card
After I restored I was missing market. Running deck 1.3

Mine is a 16gb card. I couldn't unlock the phone after restore. There was no unlock ring. Running mik 2.5
I have the same issue. 32gb card. Amon-ra. fortunately clockwork works. Unfortunately I have to use clockwork. I even reformatted and repartitioned. Still no luck
We're comin from a pure power source.
I've also restored from Amon Ra and had weird things missing.

holy crap im having the same issues. I did a nandroid restore with amon ra 2.3 and now even after a full WIPE I cannot get the same rom that I had restored at one point working again. Market app is missing. WTF?
