[PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTINg]Bada Q&A - Bada Software and Hacking General

Hey People,
If you want an answer to your questions, Please stop creating new threads . You can post all your Questions here and the Senior Members,Mods and other admins will revert to you with the answer. This reduces the amount of threads created and keeps the development area clean. Let the DEV. area only consist of hacks, mods, fixes, roms and other things. Let all the question and answer go in here!

Let it me say so, this is a international Forum to "HELP" other people with their problems, i am not disturbet of answering the same thing 100 times if someone needs my help, i am here to help,
and serious devs are chatting privately if they need quick contact not over posting in a forum...
I think it is a little bit unfair for newcomers cause they must learn things that senior members know here, and shouldn't we not help such people?
I am here to help as you all call them "noobs" and such people are for me the importants, users that only critizise them don't help the devs or even the newcomers. If everyone would help here such people we would have less problems and it is normal to not use the search, i am also not using it^^
No critic against you, i only want to write here my statement, for what this forum is made, to discuss problems and to help others to solve them, forbidding postins in dev area i don't want.
Everybody who has million times the same question in MY topics in dev area is welcome, every user i will try to help, if someone have questions to my apps, i will answer them a million time if needet.
By the way the possible answers are not suited for people against your thinking. so it is for me useless, make fair ratings so that users can use the answer they realy want or me as a dev.
And remember always:
WITHOUT THIS USERS WE DEVS ARE NOTHING!!!
Thank you.

I also agree to this. But just that, the questions and answers week be at one place and users or new users need not search the forum. They can jump to this thread and search for the answer. Also, it avoids creation of un necessary threads.
Search the development area will show up some developmental results, and hence the user might not find the exact results expected.

I suggest to close this and to ban the noobs who ask this dummies questions !
This Forum
I've been a long time visitor and active member of many forums. However, I only recently have had the fortune of discovering this wonderful forum where unbelievable things are being done. This forum is beneficial to me via my Cingular 8525 and I greatly appreciate the plethora of knowledge contained within this forum and those that help by graciously making this knowledge available to others.
That being said, I cannot believe the despicable elitist attitude of many of the members. I understand and am willing to overlook the use of the term noob or newbie; however, I do not understand the amount of belittling and the attitude that is allowed to propagate in this forum and find it incomprehensible. Not only does it degrade an otherwise amazing forum, it speaks volumes about those charged with moderating the forum.
In my opinion, everyone here would benefit from a dramatic shift in the level of tolerance of this behavior. Furthermore, the moderators should reevaluate their policies and consider changing their stance on this issue.

I don't think the people here are elitists. I believe they are tired. Tired of the same questions being posted over and over. This thread would have been answered with the search function.
This is by far one of the best technical forums around. These forums were created to support development, not for the average phone hobbyists. Everything here should be considered "beta". Unfortunately people think everything is going to work 100% of the time. This will not be the case.
I think the moderators are doing a pretty good job. I do believe that more posts should get removed before the flame job starts.
Long story short....XDA is a great resource...give it a chance. I believe you would have really liked XDA a couple of months ago before "Hofo migration" started aka the "8525 effect". I hope the forums will return to the concise and straight forward technical and developmental forums that they were a couple of months ago.

tco,
Thanks for replying. I agree with everything that you said. The reason that I highlighted the above is because I take issue with a portion of what you say. If people are tired of answering "simple" questions that they feel could be answered with a simple seach, then why don't they show their diapproval by not answering and allow these types of questions to either go unanswered, where they will quickly fall to the bottom of the message board, or better yet, allow someone that doesn't mind answering these types of question to answer them?
I've sifted through 70 pages of posting after posting just to find the answers to some relatively simple questions that I've had (this in spite of utilizing the advanced searching features). I could have saved a bunch of my time if I weren't so afraid of being chastised for asking a question that has already been answered in some 80-page thread.
I think people should be free to ask questions without fear of being criticized. Maybe a special section of the forum ought to either be dedicated to these types of questions, or a section of the forum ought to be restricted to "senior members." Either way, I strongly feel that the ones that deserve to be harassed are not those with questions, but those that feel that they are too good to simply offer an answer and choose to belittle the asker.

Keep in mind you sifted through 70 or 80 pages of posting because they were so many of the same questions being asked. The truth is I am also tired of going through 80 pages to stay of the up to date. In the past 24hrs things have improved compare to the past 4-8 weeks (less postings and more reading, testing and reporting).

Their responses are in line and they behold the ability to react however they would like. How would you like it if you put xxx hours building and testing for 100 people to come in and ask the same question over and over, they don't appreciate it 1 bit. don't blame jas for saying **** it and not wanting to publicly release any more, yeah that means I won't see any of his roms, but I would have done the same with the reactions that were seen with 2.0. The site is called xda DEVELOPERS for a reason. this isn't the site for someone that knows **** about their phone but wants to "look cool to their friends" the sooner this is realized the sooner the forum can get back to a civilized manner.

Then that means that we are also free to "react however [we] like" to their reactions. I, for one, see these "reactions" as immature, unjustified, and despicable. From now on, I will exercise my "ability to react however like" by calling people out for acting childish.

That is the most ignorant thing I have ever read.
First thing... this thread is being locked because the original poster did NOT need to start a thread like this.. This is something he could have read in another thread or pm'd kyphur for...
2nd thing is how the thread was hijacked yet again by people complaining, whining, sharing there opinions on something that wasnt related to the topic... there is already a topic for this that is open to everyone... the mods are taking our stance and working on what we feel should be acceptable.. This sub-fora has done a complete 180 from what it was like earlier this week...
@dallen ... your choice to speak out on the matter here in this thread where it wasnt appropriate and doesnt make it any better than the ones before you.. like i mentioned above there is a thread for this, so before you quickly tell others they were out of line maybe you should look at yourself...
@custel yes this was designed to be a developers forum, however due to the growth of HTC popularity the site has transformed into more than that... just read whats on the homepage of xda-developers.com
Welcome to xda-developers.com
This site is about certain PDA-phones, made by a secretive firm called HTC in Taiwan. Their makers named them 'Wallaby', 'Himalaya', 'Blue Angel', 'Wizard' and 'TyTN', but almost nobody knows them by those names. The mobile provider O2 sells them under the brand-name 'XDA', and that's what we had in our hands first. They're also known as Qtek, MDA, SX-56, Hermes and many, many other names.
Since we develop software for it, we need information, and nobody seemed eager or ready to give us what we needed. So we 'reverse-engineered' the devices, found a lot of information, and shared it with the world. But as our site grew we realised that lots of ordinary users were also suffering from a lack of support. They started using the xda-developers forum to communicate and before long the forum was as much a user forum as it was a developer forum.
We hope that you will enjoy this site and find it as useful as we do. We encourage you to donate or otherwise support this site. Of course absolutely all proceeds from donations will benefit this community.

Request: Moderators for Smartphones > Excalibur

In order to have a better forum, many of the regulars would like to have some moderator attention. There are topics that are difficult to navigate, and a constant repetition of the same questions from new users.
The Excalibur Forum is a fairly active place, with some interesting original development, but it is even difficult for the senior-member types to find the resources, details and response to threads that they are looking for. Many of us have begun using our signatures as bookmarks to post because it is the only method of sharing common answers efficiently available to us.
There are several volunteers within the Excalibur regulars that are willing to take on the responsibility, and have proven themselves to be patient, good communicators and friendly many times over. Here is a discussion of the problem there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=390733 Please let us know if this is feasible.
Thank you Admin(s).
We really need some Moderators on the Excalibur Forum it will help get all the information better placed, there is a lot of activity on the forum so we get the same information repeat it time after time from different people and it just makes it harder for the noobs on the forum to find out a quick solutions for their issues.
Hope we could get some help with this Admins.
I agree with the request. It would really make the Smartphones > Excalibur forum a lot better.
I'm behind you guys on this
It is getting out of hand in the Excalibur forums.
I completely agree with this. It wouldn't even take alot of work to make this forum more 'user friendly'. I feel somebody who uses the forum just needs to be able to creat a thread, pin it to the top so it doesn't get lost and be the only person that can post in that section. Therefore they would be able to post questions and answers themselves for the topics that keep coming up (eg. key mapping, sms/mms settings... the list goes on)
Lets make this happen people are not willing to use the search button and look around so lets make it as easy as possible to get the answers they need without reposting a question
I fully agree, senior members who contribute to the excalibur forum....( not senior members who don't...you know who you are) that also have a vast knowledge of modding and general issues are the ones i'd like to see....
Myself, Mikey1022, Profezza, OrganicM, Kavana, Rickwyatt, Rip Syntaxx are a few i could think of that would be great at being a moderator
Hmmm any admins around ?

+1
this forum need moderator...
I would be willing to moderate. I'm on there 24 x 7 almost and have grown quite familiar with the Excalibur and its operating system
Any word on this yet guys ? I'm itching to suggest a few sticky threads in the Excalibur forum.

Me too! We just need *someone* to cleanup and add some badly needed stickys!!
I'm waiting on this too. I can't wait to go in "Cleanup & Organization" mode on Xda. I have enough information that I would like to compile so it's easy for everyone to use. Me & Organic are always on xda. There's so many redundant threads and so much trash that needs to be cleaned up and put in order so life is easier. Everyday there's new thread which have already been answered so many times. Using stickies and cleaning the excalibur thread will honestly make it so much easier on noobs as well as everybody else. Let us know as we're eager to get this going as soon as possible.
We haven't forgotten about you. In fact it's in "committee" for discussion as we speak.
In the meantime, feel free to build the Wiki and create useful threads that consolidate information. Once this is done you can easily PM existing Mods and request a Sticky. In fact if you PM me directly I'll make my best efforts to get to it ASAP but please allow that it might take a few hours for me to respond/react to requests.
Thank you for a response.
Go Chicago
Yea i think its down to 4 now, myself, OrganicM, Mikey1022, and luckybandit that would be the most interested.
id love to become a Moderator
Just an FYI, site Admin is currently extending invitations to a few selected candidates for moderation in the Smartphone Subforums.
So you should have additional Mods who are knowledgeable on your specific devices shortly.
I know, we're almost as bad as a bloated government sometimes but we are doing what we can to look out for you guys.

Reminding you all to help over in the q&a section

This is meant to be a reminder to all of you. I ask that you pop in the Q&A section as often as possible to help answer questions by members. If we all do that, a significant % of the questions will be answered sufficiently.
Thank you
I hate to be snide, but uh, that section is useless for whats in it. Really. Its like the "General G1 forum", posts get lost in there. There are a LOT of topics in there that should NOT be in there for general, and they dont get answers (not as many) because they are in a random place. Like these for instance:
Code:
Messages will not be erased after soft reset (WM 6.1)
O2 XDA Exec Won't Power On after Unccessfull ROM Upgrade
[WM 6.5] 2 quick questions...
movie player for wm 6.5
6.5 enhancement disabled
Need help with G1
Those are on the first and second page, and they do not belong in there. They have little to no posts because they are "lost". They need to be posting in the forum dedicated to the phone they are having questions/problems with, not in a 'general' section.
Now dont take this as attacking you, no you didnt make the forum. But, for people that [if there are any] control the design, they should not have made that section, or it needs to be moderated better because those topics should not be there.
I went in there to 'help out' as per request, but I couldnt because 80% of the topics are like I mentioned above, ones about specific phones to which I cannot help with.
Not to you, but out loud: Organization is a little dissorganized around here.
My 2 cents.
I've been moderating the Q&A section for a few months now, and no one has ever told me he can't find anything. I answer about 50-70 questions there per week. there are many other people like timmymarsh, joel2009, rudegar, orb3000, deedee, denco7... and more.. who help out on a regular basis. a large % of the questions are answered. I encourage people to post questions regarding specific devices in the dedicated forum, but i'd rather have the Q&A section flooded than all device specific forums.
Most questions are more windows mobile/shell related rather than device related..\
You will also notice, that most questions regarding specific devices are related to non-HTC devices, which we don't support anyways.. so these are just a "if you get your answer.. great" threads.
just help out with what you can and it will be highly appreciated.
The whole point of the Q&A forum (IMO, team can correct me if I am wrong) is somewhere for people to ask questions that are short and simple (after searching of course). You ask, someone answers, people move on. It is organised in it's own way and leaves the device forums free for everyone else

there is also a GUIDES thread over there which i implored people to donate to (donate=writing additional guides) but until now i got got like 1-2 guides from other members.. and the rest were written by myself.

Though I understand what your saying Dave, I honestly still do not see the point of that forum...atleast with the random posts like I meantioned earlier. Thats how posts get lost.
This topic was created, why? Because supposedly not enough topics are getting attended to. Why is that?
A. The forum is in a random spot to begin with (I actually didnt even know it was there until this topic)
B. On every page there are quite a few "specific" type questions that unless those with the "specific" knowledge look, could only answer. (and it would seem there arent enough of them...)
Also I know if I had a bricked phone (which there are some topics in there like that), I wouldnt want non-experts to tell me how to fix my specific problem. It could make it worse. Allowing 'bricked' topics in a 'general' forum to me is like allowing a chevy owner asking how to swap an engine in a honda forum. Do you think thats smart? Thats asking for more problems. The noobs dont know its a bad idea, but allowing it says its ok.
Rename the forum to "Random Q/A for All Phones", that would make more sense.
Sorry if I seem like im nagging here. I dont intend to. I just feel a dis-oreiented forum is unneeded. Keep the specific questions for the specific forums, thats why they are there (not to keep them free ).
____
As for the guides:
The windows mobile sticky just seems to not fit again. The rest (including the one by you nir (very good btw), all fit. What should be done is this: Make a new category called Phone Operating Systems, and put Windows Mobile in there, then put that random sticky in there. That seems to be what is missing, is an operating category. WM/CE, Android, Symbian, Blackberry OS, Nokia OS, and (probably not necessary at all but is one) iPhone OS [yuk].
That would make things a bit more organized as well.
I laugh, you guys always say search. Why is that? Because things are hard to find sometimes because people dont search. Never 'rely' on people to search, its the worst staff can do. I know this. You have to make it the EASIEST to navigate as possible, because people are lazy to search. Oranizing=less clutter=less work for you guys. All works out for the best.

It's not because there was a massive amount of unanswered questions... (We're not a support desk, we don't have targets ). It's because there was not a place for new users, with less knowledge than most, to post quick questions. People on the site needed general device question and answers (not device specific). These were mostly asked in the D&H forum which became very cluttered with random questions, flame replies. D&H is too popular to support quick questions, so Q&A was a way to tidy it. You're quite right when you say you would not want someone helping you unbrick your device who doesn't know it, and I wouldn't expect someone to post in Q&A if they did (I maintain the Kaiser Unbricking thread BTW ). The Forum caption on the Index says: "This forum is for all questions, big or small, you might have. Please read the rules in this forum before asking.". The Q&A rules are here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441333
I think it is good for the lesser experienced users to ask questions about apps / settings, and in time, searching Q&A will yield some good answers to questions.
Hope this clears things up a bit
Dave
EDIT: Off to bed it's 1am, I'll try and answer anything else tomorrow
i agree
i can see the point of the forum, it helps us to help them it directs the quesiotns away from other forums that are not for questions
and its beeen running for a fair while and ive helped (ill forgive you for forgetting me nir) and people appreciate the help they get
and as for having non experts fix bricked devices
if youve bricked it then youve been doing something you shouldnt have been doing (from a legal stance) so giving it to the experts would be foolish as i know for a fact the can charge extra for doing flashes
FYI ive read and asked questions and ive never bricked a device once EVER
im not saying i never will, but if i do ill blame myslef as ill have not followed directions
You're right. i apologize for forgetting. there are probably a few others whom i've forgotten as well.
i was only kidding ive not been there as much as i used to lately then i decided to learn how to cook

Stop dis-respectiong NOOBs(new comers to XDA)

Hey i see here and there, some of the seniors are welcoming new members a.k.a Noobs in bitter and dis-respectful manner. Stop doing so, all we need is some patience. Remember that once, we were also noobs. All we need is, teach new members, the WAY of APPROACH to solve their queries and problem.
And request to new members:
Before posting ur problem or query kindly GOOGLE search which even searches XDA, if u dont find the thing which u need than Search in XDA, search at XDA will mostly solve ur problem, since one or the other user might have gone through the same problem and he/she might have overcome through it. but still, if u dont get, then post it. And lets(includes me ) try to make a habit of reading the whole thread before posting it.
Cmmon 3 Cheers.
Cheers to XDA, Cheers to Galaxy Ace Devs, Cheers to Galaxy ace members.

Yes , you make a point , but newcomers are different from noobs .
Newcomers: Are polite and new people who know a little before posting
Noobs: Are rude and people who don't bother to learn anything before posting .
Infused with CM7 for the Galaxy Ace using XDA App
I agree to the Topic Maker
But still there are some noobs who are just posting likely new topics before searching (U might Include me)
M sorry for that ... But There should some basic Q/A Thread ... in that ANY TYPE of Galaxy ACE question can be asked ....
might one help another
Any type? Flood the forum with a million of the same small problems with same solutions?
Every time you don't do a search before you post, a penguin is killed.
Newcomers are okay. Senior members are more or less polite but will not hesitate to lash out at disrespectful members. That's what they deserve. It's not about being new or not. In xda, you either be a developer, or be a learning user. Not beggars nor trolls.

Agreed!
I think they are not confident what they are doing so they might like to hear the same answer from different user which might give sme courage to move on, but it some time become irritating.
Totally agree with the author of the thread.. We shouldn't be treated like this (newcomers) anyways I am not a noob im just a newly registered member but I am familiar with the ROMS and modification of smartphones.
I will happily answer a question that isn't in the first post or last 3 pages. If the question has been answered recently or many times I will tell them to search.
That's nothing unique to XDA, that's just standard forum etiquette across the internet.

Yes, you, no we, should be.. Its brought on to you by yourself, coming in and asking lot of questions, getting mad because you dont understand the answer that was given etc etc.. Seniors does not dislike or disrespect any newcomer just for the fact that they are new.
Mostly people know their way around any forum but some dont...
Respect is not a one way street

What is your patience level for newbie-esque questions?

You know, newbies (like I myself am quite often) who ask dumb questions that can be easily answered with a five second google search.
Sometimes we get confused and ask questions that should be easily answered.
Sometimes we're just lazy or frustrated and ask instead of search.
Sometimes we're on our phones and searching is a PITA compared to just asking.
I get a little "short" with these questions, even though I too behave like a newb sometimes.
I try to be patient, but sometimes I come across as sarcastic in my replies.
I guess I have a low patience level then. I need to be better with my replies.
What about you?
Let's try to keep this conversation as constructive/friendly as possible. :good:
Meh, I have patience. But on this site, there's to many chiefs and not enough indians. I'm so sick and tired of people with responses like "use the search bar man" or "why don't you read the thread" those answers are just as dumb as the dumb questions and also "spam" dev threads.
I've always had the mentality that there's no such thing as a stupid question.
People have always and always will ask questions without doing searches....it will never change.
So don't be an ass when you see "stupid questions" its not hurting you in any way and just help the damn people.

I guess I'm torn. I'm a new who knows nothing about code or programing but I also realize that its a dev site. The extra noobs here help spread the devs work to more people than they would have had use their work before. The easy to find solutions questions will happen.
I realize the dumb questions happen but I do my best to realize if someone tried sincerely to find a solution.
Zelendel's off quoted post makes sense when it comes to how we are viewed when we need help.

I try to help to the best of my ability with as much patience as possible. However, if I search and find it within seconds, I may come off as a little rude, and usually start the post with "please remember to use the search bar in the future. I found the answer within seconds....." and then below that I answer their questions. =p

questions
I understand that XDA is primarily intended as a development site, but I think things often get taken too far. I have been on XDA for about 3 years since before rooting my first Android phone. This, in fact, is about my fourth post. I am still locked out from posting in the Development forums. I do read several almost daily.
I understand the need to keep the volume of BS to a minimum on those forums, but I also feel the the developers do have a need/obligation to help people that are having issues with problems that they do not have the resources to troubleshoot or understand, and to raise the level of knowledge of all forum members. They publish many great ROMS, Kernals, utilities, etc on these forums with the expectation that everyone out there, including me are their Beta testers. They obviously are looking for feedback and results that other people are having to fix bugs, update instruction and documentation, and get ideas for future enhancements.
Most of the Developers are NOT entertaining any discussion of developing on these forums anyway. They obviously are either doing their work or collaborating with others offline of the respective forums.
Aside from blatant trolling, or a complete lack of self-initiative, I believe all questions should be welcomed and answered. Maybe this needs to be in in a sub-forum under the development thread that also helps us find valid information. One Q&A thread to support all of the I747 initiatives becomes a bit too general and overwhelming.
My two cents. Thanks for the space to say it.
I don't have any tolerance..
This is a DO AT YOUR OWN RISK website
A DEVELOPMENT website.
Its OK to be informative when the other person knows exactly what they are doing.
But to walk somebody every step of the way in my point of view its unnecessary. Devs don't have any responsibility over what happens to your phone. Nor do they need to do everything possible to make your phone work. I can cook a ROM and post it in the dev thread and say "absolutely nothing works but phone calls." I have no obligation to fix anything or make anything happen. Its a piece of work I chose to develop and share with other who are experienced and know what they are doing. Most problems, I'd say 90% of them, from a "stable" ROM come from the users end. Its is a persons duty as an individual to know what you got yourself into and to figure out a way to fix it. A lot of people still don't comprehend that.
I also have no tolerance into trying to turn XDA into a "social network" If you keep in touch with other members here outside of XDA then that's cool, but this needs to stay a development site...
I hate seeing the whole "I flashed this now my phone isn't working." My answer is always the same "Good, that way you learn." We all don't use the search bar or bother to use Google. Its a bad habit, specially on this site, but we all do it. But reading an OP should be the least thing anyone should do.. Most questions that are being asked are answered in the OP. And if you don't have the time to read a couple pages into a ROM thread, you shouldn't be flashing or messing with anything at all.
Once again I'll say, this is a do at your own risk. Its exactly why you get disclaimers in the OP of a rom.No one is going to hold your hand when you brick your phone.
Read read read and if you question yourself about modifying your phone, don't do it lol phones come with an already stable firmware on them.

The devs on here DO NOT have an obligation to anyone. Many build a rom for their own use and choose to share it. Others are out to achieve the perfect rom for their own use. For this reason some entertain problems while others will not. They do not have to help you if they choose not to. Many times, the question or problem presented has been asked and answered more than once, but rather than take the time to do a search and read a little, people want to have the answer handed to them. Welcome to a place where each individual is responsible for their own actions!
For the reason of questions, that is why XDA created Q&A. The developer threads are for developing and feedback (which is at the OP's discretion to act upon), not to answer questions you have. As far as overwhelming, this is why each section in XDA has the ability to do a search within...so you can narrow down the options.
