HTC G2 Radio - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been having some problems with getting service in areas around my school. It never used to be a problem with my old Mytouch Slide.
Could it be that I need to update the radio? Which radio should I choose?
I know I should be getting service, because other phones are getting service in the same locations.

Don't know anything about radios but I do know that some schools(or maybe just teachers) are putting in these devices that cuts the signal on phones. In my school I believe there was one teacher who had it and ppl told me that he would tell them he's turning the device on and as soon as he does their signal drops. So I guess I tell you this as its a possibility that's what may be going on.

Well it could be a dead spot for your carrier. What carrier do you use? And other people in your school could be using other carriers

Other people are using the same carrier as me. AT&T. I have ran T-mobile phones on AT&T's network to avoid data charges for the longest time, and the phones so far have given me great service (Motorola Cliq, Mytouch Slide). But with the G2, I'm finding a lot of dead spots. Nothing has changed apart from the phone I'm using...

The service in my phone has been going off & on lately like my bars would be all gone. so ive tried pretty much everything to do to fix it & now I just dont have service now. Is this because of the ATT & T-mobile merger? I live in Roswell GA if that helps.

1) no its not the merger
2) What rom/radio? Have you tried another? ("Tried everything" doesn't help us diagnose)
3) Did you simply call T-mobile and ask about a service outage in your area? Those do happen.

Seriously lol. ridiculous.
I've been having that same issue on and off in The Bay area. Happens more often in San Francisco than East Bay. Sometimes I'll have to reboot my phone to get service again. Or the bars will turn white and sit there.
I'm running CM7 Nightly 153.

How about instead you leave sprint? If you dont get good coverage then why would you come to sprint in the first place. The low signals and wifi scanning for long periods of time leech the hell out of batteries.
I hope you don't roam on Verizon's network because in the end you're screwing loyal sprint customers.

Hello everyone I've been trolling these forums for many years and could have swore I registered but guess I didn't but I digress. I just joined Sprint and activated an OG Evo that I picked up earlier and since I didn't buy a phone I am able to get a new phone at a discounted price obviously. But I am torn at the moment I am running Sprint lovers rom at the moment and after maybe 3-4 hours of listening to music my battery is all but dead. I have my brightness turned down and the screen filter app to kill my backlight on the function buttons per a suggestion from another thread. Is the battery just that bad in the Evo? And if so I'll be looking to grab either the LTE, SG3 or the new nexus but they all have downside that turn me off. The LTE reported to have poor battery life and an removable battery, the G3 from what I've heard has signal strength issues and unless someone can point me to the EPST.apk so I can use Verizon prl's until I move to a better coverage zone that's potentially a big issue and the Nexus is reported to have worse battery life than the LTE so I.figured.I'd turn to the experts and get some opinions thanks everyone

I'm not gonna help you do something against sprints policies.
But here's what I will tell you. Stay on wifi as much as possible and turn it off when your not connected
Turn 3g off unless needed if you don't get a good signal.
Call sprint and tell them your getting bad signal yada yada yada they'll send you an airave.
If you really want good battery life then check out the link below and follow the instructions step by step.

Yeah I already told Sprint that even though two telesales reps and their coverage map showed I had good coverage I am roaming constantly and the supervisor I spoke with had me switch to the $99 plan for the next two months until I move to a better coverage area. But thank you for the guide on battery life

And I am staying with Sprint because I will not go back to Verizon or US cellular and those are the only CDMA carriers around me except metropcs. I am in no way trying to screw Sprint or any customers I actually like sprint and have no real complaints about their data speeds or lack of LTE like it seems several people do so I plan on dealing with the fact I am roaming when I am at my house and use Sprint's tower when I go to work. At least until about the tailend of September when I leave this gods forsaken place

Never got 4G on Sprint (HTC Supersonic)

Hello everyone, I hope to check this thread for updates (read: I'm so dumb I don't check for thread updates often *laughs*).
Anyway, as the title says, I never got 4G on my phone, even before rooting it! I obtained this phone, new, around the time Sprint (began) started adding a extra rate for all smartphones (read: all smartphones will be more expensive than "simple" phones on same plan).
I'm wondering how to get 4G on my phone that is running Cyanogenmod. I am well-versed in Linux, so if the adb shell or the bootloader is required to fix, I can follow the steps you provide. Or should I just accuse Sprint for giving me a defective phone those many, many years ago, even though I never got 4G in the first place? (since my phone is rooted atm, I doubt I could win a court case.)
I appreciate any help, even if you do not know how to fix this. (read: asking around or just reading this)

4G and wimax are the same thing if you didn't know.
And OP, if you are on an ICS Rom or a JB Rom, you will not have wimax. For all you know, you might not even have 4G service in range of where you live. I personally have never even connected to a 4G network.

i'm referring to the standard 4G pn Sprint (or whatever 4G was said to be had on "Sprint HTC Evo 4G" by Sprint)
EDIT: i'm well within the 4G area almost all day normally

From my understand wimax AND Lte use different radios hence why any of the new lte phones like the GS3 or evo are stuck on 3g network until LTE rolls out in the area you live. Also he stated he couldn't access 4g even before so he would be on a stock gb

And if you never have been able to get 4g then I would have brought the phone back to sprint. All their 4g phones should access it if your in the coverage zone.

If you have had the phone for more than 6 months, which it sounds like you have, you should un-root it and take it to sprint. If that is you want 4g service. The unrooting process is generally about the same in difficulty as rooting the phone was, so if you figured that out you should be able to get it backto stock. The process is different depending on your HBoot version and how you rooted it in the first place. If you want to get your 4g fixed, post your HBoot version and root method and someone will point the way to unrooting the phone.
(to get the HBoot version, pull the battery, put it back in, hold vol down, and power on the phone. You should get into the bootloader and the HBoot version should be listed there.)
I assumed it was due to not having the 4G plan before that caused my phone to never get 4G with the plans change (read: Sprint changed plan details). I should of thought of turning it in sooner, but I was not 100% smart back then (nor will I ever be *laughs*)

I would bring it into a store and get it tested to see if it works after you unroot, my sprint store doesn't care about root but that might not bevl the case. Then if it really doesn't work I would ***** and tell them to look up your account to show you never used 4g and see if the will give you a comp on your account.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I never noticed any difference in speed the few times I was in California where there was 4g. I live in AZ and with sprint there is no 4g service but we still pay the fee :/
I doubt unrooting it will fully unroot it (I did edit some startup scripts since i've rooted which seemed to have no impact on my data connection (mostly for ext2 mount point on a directory "/mnt/sdcard/sd-ext" which I removed due to delayed sdcard mounting--now I use a script I manually run when I want to ... offtopic sorry >.> ), so idk if a full unroot is possible.
EDIT: *scrolls back on posts* I read that flashing someone else's radio (backed up from their device) can prevent both from using 4G at the same time. tbh, I don't know if I ever did (I hope not)
Sent from my HTC Evo 4G using Tapatalk (ex-GetJar version)
*hopes this doesn't count as a double post*
Somehow I'm getting 4G atm... but it is in a place I tried before (many moons ago). Strange indeed.
What I just don't get is why it is now working. Did I really flash someone else's Radio? If so, was someone else with that "4G login credientals" always on when I tried before? If not, was Sprint lying to me on their online map for 3G/4G coverage?
EDIT: I want to leave this open to see if anyone has any idea as to why it was failing. Another strange finding is that it is a 1 of 3 bars 4G signal according to Cyanogenmod's standard indicator. ( +1 for tethering without having to pay over $100 USD total on Sprint)
Sent from my laptop without any glorious Pixel Shader or "real" Virtulization support.
I've never had wimax signal at my house. Or city.
We are listed as 4g service area for "clear" wimax broadband, but they also state that it is currently not being sold here. That tells me the switch hasn't been flipped on it yet.
There is no sprint wimax one city over but they flipped the switch on "clear" broadband wimax and it's FAST.... If I get signal (its very spotty) ... . 7.4mb down. 1.14mb up.
Edit:
I was searching the intarwebz and it looks like anything more than 2 miles from the tower is pushing it for signal.
I also have the understanding that the 10$ smartphone fee is not just for 4g, but more so the nature of the beast. We have always on, always connected/pinging data devices.

Atrocious 3G speed (1/10 of what my other phone does)

Having really tough time with my SGIII. After rooting stock ROM and even after update to the latest JB leak from Sprint together with radio updates I am still getting really atrocious 3G speeds.
I am usually getting 50K both ways at best in Boston of all places. Any tips how I should troubleshoot?

Is your s3 set to cdma only or lte/cdma
I have not tested it on the s3 but I caught a bug on the evo lte where it was connecting to the new enhanced 3g (not actIve yet)
On the evo it would only connect properly if on cdma only.
You may need the app "network" to further mess with it

A little late to the party. It's called SVDO, which allows devices with CDMA radios to simultaneously use voice and data.
My understanding is that only the S3 and EVO LTE have the radios capable of doing this, whereas the Nexus LTE may not.
Gs3 and the Evo LTE has two radios antennas. One for voice & one for data. So I've heard. Let me know if I'm wrong tho

It's because they don't support SVDO on all towers and during high volumes, data is less prioritized so you may only get voice.

LMAO I wouldn't be surprised. I don't even bother going into their store to ask questions. Only to look at phones and when I'm approached by someone I tell them I'm fine because 99% of what they say is misinformation or flat out ridiculous. Last time I went I overheard one of the guys telling this lady who obviously knew nothing about phones that she should go with the Epic Touch 4G because the Galaxy Nexus "wasn't that good." Really? It was hard holding my tongue at that moment. Anyways sorry to get a little off topic but just had to let it out.

Actually, the Evo 4G LTE did SVDO before the S3. And I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure there were other SVDO-capable phones before the Evo.
My Galaxy Attain from metropcs can talk and browse at the same time and I got that phone over 8 months ago I'm sure there are a few phones that can do this
