I couldn't find it explicitly stated anywhere, I just wanted to know will downgrading gingerbread to get root via the method in the xda wiki delete my apps and everything? Is it a wipe and I need to backup everything? I know I should anyway for safety, but I have a lot of video games with save games and whatnot, and even if I backup these I lose saved games generally with any type of wipe, so I might wait for another method if that's the case. Or will it move more like a standard OTA upgrade where my information is saved? Thanks!

You have to downgrade G2/Desire Z if you are higher than 1.34. I dont think you can root and s-off etc without downgrading. And if you downgrade thats a wipe cause it is like renewing the system or flashing a new rom it wipes everything.
I have downgraded from 2.3.3 stock Desire Z and I am very happy that I did it now I am running latest CyanogenMod and it is so smooth I am amazed.
Is there a preferred backup app that I should use that could preserve app data? Titanium needs root to do that backup.

Hmm I dont think you can take proper backups of app data without root permissions. But I might be wrong ofc. Never heard of it tho.
Use Astro File Manager, or just copy everything from your phone onto the PC.

If I root using the method posted by TheArtiszan for mytouch slides with the OTA update to version 1.35.531.1, will I have to wipe out my phone or lose anything?
I don't want to lose any data or my apps or anyhting. I know that my email, pictures, and contacts will sync if my phone gets wiped, but I'm hoping that I wont have to wipe out or lose anything when I root.
Any help will be appreciated!
Anyone?

You will more than likely lose your apps and will have to reinstall them.
Yes, rooting will wipe your phone. Do a nandroid backup first

As everyone has stated, yes you will have to wipe the phone therefore wiping all your apps. You can use a file manager app like Linda or Astro or something like that to back up the apps onto your card. Also if you choose to use a 2.1 based ROM and plan to use apps2sd by adding an ext partition, you'll want to back up the contents of you sd card to your computer as that will reformat the card. After flashing a rooted ROM, I suggest downloading Titanium Backup and getting the donate version (through the app itself) for one click app install.
Hello... i am new to this forum and considering in rooting my phone....is there anyone here who can walk me through the process via aim, or phone....i tried to do this for 3 days and i have gotten nowhere....please someone help....!!
My fiance has to send in her phone for replacement. Since the Incredible doesn't have the Privacy/backup app data option, I want to back up her apps so as not to lose data or have to manually do it in the market. From reading, Titanium Backup is the best app for the job and it requires root.
I searched for my answer but found not exactly what I was looking for...
I know I can run unrevoked3 to root the device, install TB then back up my apps...
From here I want to unroot the phone. I read I can install the official 2.1 ROM and it'll erase what unrevoked3 did.. Am I correct in assuming that?
Or could I just factory reset the phone (with the 2.2 OTA) instead of having to install that 2.1 ROM? And will doing this get rid of the custom recovery? Or does a whole ROM need to be flashed to replace the recovery?
Then on the new device, i have to root it, install TB again, install the backups... If it comes preloaded with 2.2, how do i lose root and still hold onto all the apps I just backed up?
Actually I don't care about the new device and getting rid of root...
I just want to make sure the phone I send back no longer has the custom recovery.

To skip the rooting and unrooting, try AppBrain. You can build a list and sync your device with your apps. On the new phone, do the same and it will automatically redownload and install your missing apps.

Will it download them through the market? I only ask so the downloads list in the market shows apps as installed and will notify of updates. And does it back up app data as well?

And modifying my search I found the answer... Downgrading will erase custom recovery...

Yes, it downloads through the market, and does updates, too. No it doesn't save app data. I try to stay away from that due to possible data corruption.

Another question... So phone is rooted, s-off, cw recovery.
Outside of flashing the leak, how would one prepare the phone for the ota without losing apps and data? I've read flashing the stock recovery would do it, but I can't find the 2.2 one or I'm looking in the wrong place. Any help appreciated.

Hello , I managed to finally root my tmobile g2 with the xda wiki perm gfree method. How do I install new roms to try? I really want to try out this cyanogen 7. And how do I back up all my current stuff like: apps, data, rom, everything lol.
I used the backup thing in clockworks mod recovery. Is that how you correctly backup?
Also, what is this radio thing? Does clocksworkmod recovery back that up too?

Your backup should be stored on your SD card in the clockworkmod/backup/SOMEDATETIME directory. Check this first and if so make a copy to your PC, just to be sure.
Do not, I repeat, do not mess around with your radio unless your absolutely sure what you are doing.
Then you can start to read the wikis and instructions how to install a custom rom on this forum. Be sure you know what you are doing. And make sure you make a copy of your contacts and messages before you do that. Because you will lose them when installing a custom rom since you have to wipe your phone before that. Write down your steps so you know afterwards what you have done (in case we have to pull you out of the s**t when something does go wrong).
Hi,
my friend has an HTC Desire HD, which is on a stock 2.3.3 ROM, unrooted, AT&T Branded, probably Net-Locked (not SIM-Locked though) and S-ON. Now the VOL-UP button is mechanically broken, which is covered by her insurance.
I want to back up all her data, apps and app settings. I will probably flash a RUU before giving it to the repair people to delete all personal information. How do I perform the backup?
I usually use Titanium Backup for that but it requires root, which requires a downgrade, which deletes all the apps. Basically I want a temproot for 2.3.3, but I couldn't find anything like that. Visionary+ seems to work on 2.2 only.
Thanks for any advice or information.
I know my way through a terminal and have access to Windows, Linux and OS-X. Bonus if I only require the Linux machine though.

Hi, I'm not that technical so here's what I would do. Root the phone, make a backup of original ROM using ROM Manager. Do what you want, save it and then flash back to the original ROM.

But as I understand it, in order to root it I have to downgrade it to 2.2 first and the downgrade deletes all my apps and settings. Is that not correct?
Try root with superoneclick 2.3.3

Doesn't work. Superoneclick runs through without error but the installed Superuser App on the phone crashes, Titanium Backup can't get root access and after a reboot everything is gone.

Try uninstalling superuser and installing from the market to see what happens.

Starting off I have experience with rooting, flashing Roms etc. I use to own the Nook Tablet running Cm10.1.
I recently bought the Nexus 7 FHD and was wondering what the most simplistic way of rooting is there for the device. I am happy with my device's UI, I just want root privilege, more specifically so I can use certain apps and connected a PS3 controller to play games.
In summary, I need root privilege without flashing CM or recovery programs.

enter bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
allow the unit to wipe data/cache and reboot
enter bootloader again
fastboot boot twrp.img
In TWRP choose install and select UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.51.zip
TWRP the only way to root? I'd also much rather not wipe my data and cache. Not sure why I would have to for root.

When you unlock the bootloader, the tablet forces you to wipe data and cache as a security measure, otherwise anyone can just bypass your unlock method. You have no choice in the matter.
If you don't unlock the bootloader, /system is write-protected and you can't install root permanently.
You don't need to "install" TWRP. You just run it temporarily to install the root files. The command I gave you just loads twrp into memory to run it. It doesn't flash over the stock recovery.
You probably want to just look at one of the guides. I know you said you had experience with rooting, but probably not familiar with nuances on nexus.
Ahh okay, thank you. Before, recovery programs would flash over stock and I had to use an image file to flash stock back. Annoying.
My other question being what do you suggest me to do about backing up then restoring data and cache? Any apps work good with this PR should I manually back up my data and cache partitions?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
CWM Helium work? I know Titanium is only root.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Not sure about non-root backup. The first thing I do is to unlock bootloader so I don't have to redo my efforts, so I usually just use Titanium.
I want to save all my data and cache files including pictures etc. just like it is now. Whatever is best for that. I'm not all that crazy about rooting my new tablet (although the factory image is now released) but I like rooted privileges.

I'm sure there are backup programs that work without root, I just never looked into them. For the images, you should be able to just drag and drop them off the MTP device that shows up when you plug in the nexus to the PC (MTP is the replacement for USB mass storage)
I've found a few guides for rooting. Thanks for the help!

Copy/paste what you can off the devices storage partition, then unlock.
Nexus devices don't require a "hack" to root like other devices. Eventually there will be a non-unlocked method for rooting, but because it is so easy out the box, not much effort goes into finding a workaround.
This is why unlocking is always best to do immediately, even of you don't root or do anything.
Backup apps should work fine without root since it will have read only rights by default. Restoring a backup would require root to write. And Be cautious though because I used titanium backup while being rooted before I switched to a custom rom. When I tried to restore I got errors and the programs got really stupid. I uninstalled a few and they wouldn't let me reinstall at all without error messages. I had to find alternatives. Might be a better way but I didn't spend much time on it. Lost my Riptide 2 save though

I used the Nexus Root Toolkit to backup all my data and cache, and it restored without problem. Helpful application. Thanks to everyone!
