Desire HD Backup for Warranty - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
my friend has an HTC Desire HD, which is on a stock 2.3.3 ROM, unrooted, AT&T Branded, probably Net-Locked (not SIM-Locked though) and S-ON. Now the VOL-UP button is mechanically broken, which is covered by her insurance.
I want to back up all her data, apps and app settings. I will probably flash a RUU before giving it to the repair people to delete all personal information. How do I perform the backup?
I usually use Titanium Backup for that but it requires root, which requires a downgrade, which deletes all the apps. Basically I want a temproot for 2.3.3, but I couldn't find anything like that. Visionary+ seems to work on 2.2 only.
Thanks for any advice or information.
I know my way through a terminal and have access to Windows, Linux and OS-X. Bonus if I only require the Linux machine though.

Hi, I'm not that technical so here's what I would do. Root the phone, make a backup of original ROM using ROM Manager. Do what you want, save it and then flash back to the original ROM.

But as I understand it, in order to root it I have to downgrade it to 2.2 first and the downgrade deletes all my apps and settings. Is that not correct?

Try root with superoneclick 2.3.3

Doesn't work. Superoneclick runs through without error but the installed Superuser App on the phone crashes, Titanium Backup can't get root access and after a reboot everything is gone.

Try uninstalling superuser and installing from the market to see what happens.

[Q] Uninstall Friend Stream

I just rooted my Froyo Desire and I want to uninstall Facebook, Friend Stream, Twitter.
I am using Titanium Backup to uninstall.
But everytime I uninstall, the phone reboots.
Any suggestions?
You can't uninstall them that way, you need a custom ROM with them removed (but you might go into a constant sync loop if you do on a Sense-based ROM)
ok, thanks for the reply.
would you be able to direct me to the best custom rom out there?
i'm new to this stuff, i think i flukely rooted my desire (SLCD). lol
No one can say what the 'best' ROM is as it's subjective. I don't even use a custom ROM any more as I've no issues with the stock ROM.
If you want to try one without Sense then look at OpenDesire - it's compiled from source specifically for the Desire as opposed to being ported from the Nexus One
ok cool, thanks will try that see how it goes
I managed to uninstall them just by using root explorer (with the s-off mod of course) and they have gone and no boot loop problems etc.
Phil
Yes if you have made the s-off hack you should be able to uninstall using titanium. But some stock apps are used for sync as mentioned.
OK, i see what the problem now is, I have S-ON.
I just reflashed (or whatever its called) and this time turned S-OFF in the Unrevoked settings, but when i boot the phone to see if it has changed, it is still on S-ON!!! What Gives?????

You need to use alpharev for S-OFF. It is quite safe and fast.
Have a look here

Ok thanks. I will try it and let you know what happens.
If you flash a custom Rom, you can delete some apk files from the Rom zip file, and some afterwards using adb. Not everything is save, some things are best removed using one method. You should check on the developers forum or site. The sense-based Leedroid Rom has a good documentation concerning this.

You can just remove them using adb whilst in Recovery.

Quick Root/Unroot Question

My fiance has to send in her phone for replacement. Since the Incredible doesn't have the Privacy/backup app data option, I want to back up her apps so as not to lose data or have to manually do it in the market. From reading, Titanium Backup is the best app for the job and it requires root.
I searched for my answer but found not exactly what I was looking for...
I know I can run unrevoked3 to root the device, install TB then back up my apps...
From here I want to unroot the phone. I read I can install the official 2.1 ROM and it'll erase what unrevoked3 did.. Am I correct in assuming that?
Or could I just factory reset the phone (with the 2.2 OTA) instead of having to install that 2.1 ROM? And will doing this get rid of the custom recovery? Or does a whole ROM need to be flashed to replace the recovery?
Then on the new device, i have to root it, install TB again, install the backups... If it comes preloaded with 2.2, how do i lose root and still hold onto all the apps I just backed up?
Actually I don't care about the new device and getting rid of root...
I just want to make sure the phone I send back no longer has the custom recovery.

To skip the rooting and unrooting, try AppBrain. You can build a list and sync your device with your apps. On the new phone, do the same and it will automatically redownload and install your missing apps.

Will it download them through the market? I only ask so the downloads list in the market shows apps as installed and will notify of updates. And does it back up app data as well?

And modifying my search I found the answer... Downgrading will erase custom recovery...

Yes, it downloads through the market, and does updates, too. No it doesn't save app data. I try to stay away from that due to possible data corruption.

Another question... So phone is rooted, s-off, cw recovery.
Outside of flashing the leak, how would one prepare the phone for the ota without losing apps and data? I've read flashing the stock recovery would do it, but I can't find the 2.2 one or I'm looking in the wrong place. Any help appreciated.

[Q] system apps help...htc desire

Hi..
I am using HTC desire with original shipped rom and have root it using unrevoked 3.2
I want to unlock nand and s-off.. so is it a good idea to re-root my phone using unrevoked 3.32.
I basically want to remove some system apps (footprints, friend stream,peep,plurk,stocks,teeter)..
i tried using some apps from the market to do the same but was not able to do it beacuse i dont have busybox installed beacuse of low internal memory.
Please guide me with a safe way to delete these apps.
Thanks

Thanks for the info...
Hi davebugyi
can u please help me with this ques too..

I used unrevoked 3.2 previously to root the ph
It's not necessary, because your phone is already rooted. So you can follow the instructions on alpharev.nl
I recommend using the CD-method

And once you have s-off, you can delete unwanted apps via root explorer, just delete the various apk files from /system/app but go carefully and Google or ask here if you are unsure about deleting a certain app.

Question with downgrade and root

I couldn't find it explicitly stated anywhere, I just wanted to know will downgrading gingerbread to get root via the method in the xda wiki delete my apps and everything? Is it a wipe and I need to backup everything? I know I should anyway for safety, but I have a lot of video games with save games and whatnot, and even if I backup these I lose saved games generally with any type of wipe, so I might wait for another method if that's the case. Or will it move more like a standard OTA upgrade where my information is saved? Thanks!

You have to downgrade G2/Desire Z if you are higher than 1.34. I dont think you can root and s-off etc without downgrading. And if you downgrade thats a wipe cause it is like renewing the system or flashing a new rom it wipes everything.
I have downgraded from 2.3.3 stock Desire Z and I am very happy that I did it now I am running latest CyanogenMod and it is so smooth I am amazed.
Is there a preferred backup app that I should use that could preserve app data? Titanium needs root to do that backup.

Hmm I dont think you can take proper backups of app data without root permissions. But I might be wrong ofc. Never heard of it tho.
Use Astro File Manager, or just copy everything from your phone onto the PC.

Doing backup from 2.2 to 2.4 version on G2

if i do titanium backup of my phone that is S-OFF rooted running android 2.2 and then restore that onto a android 2.4 G2 that has not been rooted. will that transfer my apps to the new phone or not? i'm not sure how that works so i'm asking. or would i have to do a clockwork backup? sorry, a bit noobish here regarding that aspect. basically i'd like to transfer some of the apps that are installed on the phone to another phone, but the new phone is not rooted. not sure if it has S-OFF or not, if that even plays any role anymore.
thanks guys.
Don't know of android 2.4, but that won't matter, transferring those apps wouldn't work as you won't be able to run tb on the non rooted phone to do the restore, you also couldn't flash a .zip (if you made one) to the non rooted phone with stock recovery.
You could pull some of those .apks from the old phone and push them with adb or simply use a file manager to download, but they would have to be compatible versions that don't require root access. Even then it would only transfer the apps, nodata , so it would be the same as to download them from the market

ok so if i root the other phone then it will be possible you think?
possible. May have strange behaviors with some apps if the android versions are different.
Moved to Q&A section, please post any questions in Q&A please not General.
