My fiance has to send in her phone for replacement. Since the Incredible doesn't have the Privacy/backup app data option, I want to back up her apps so as not to lose data or have to manually do it in the market. From reading, Titanium Backup is the best app for the job and it requires root.
I searched for my answer but found not exactly what I was looking for...
I know I can run unrevoked3 to root the device, install TB then back up my apps...
From here I want to unroot the phone. I read I can install the official 2.1 ROM and it'll erase what unrevoked3 did.. Am I correct in assuming that?
Or could I just factory reset the phone (with the 2.2 OTA) instead of having to install that 2.1 ROM? And will doing this get rid of the custom recovery? Or does a whole ROM need to be flashed to replace the recovery?
Then on the new device, i have to root it, install TB again, install the backups... If it comes preloaded with 2.2, how do i lose root and still hold onto all the apps I just backed up?
Actually I don't care about the new device and getting rid of root...
I just want to make sure the phone I send back no longer has the custom recovery.

To skip the rooting and unrooting, try AppBrain. You can build a list and sync your device with your apps. On the new phone, do the same and it will automatically redownload and install your missing apps.

Yes, it downloads through the market, and does updates, too. No it doesn't save app data. I try to stay away from that due to possible data corruption.

Another question... So phone is rooted, s-off, cw recovery.
Outside of flashing the leak, how would one prepare the phone for the ota without losing apps and data? I've read flashing the stock recovery would do it, but I can't find the 2.2 one or I'm looking in the wrong place. Any help appreciated.

ok so im running cm 6 and want to move to CM7 & the Darktremors Apps2SD - i just got my new SDcard partitioned. And want to know where i should look so that i can grab all of my apps off the device prior to migrating to cm7 & formatting as some of the apps i have are no longer avail on the market...
ive heard of titanium backup... but at the moment have just using the debugger to pull over the:
system/app
data/apps
data/apps-private
directories...
but i use apps2sd and cant find any of these apps anywhere... can someone tell me what directory to look in to find the apps that might be lurking on my existing sdcard on some secondary partition? - guess i dont know how apps2sd works -- it would just be nice to find out where are all my other *.apk files so i can back them up?
i think the rest of the apps are in the /mnt/asec/*
directory but the structure looks different -
if i copy/backup the structures to a flash/thumb drive how can i reinstall them on the new system after i get cm7 installed - assuming the apps aren't avail in the 'market' anymore?
do i just use "adb install *.apk" and make sure all the apps i want installed are in a single directory?
What about the apps in the /mnt/asec area that have each separate apk in its own directory?
I use astro file manager to back them up to my SD card then reinstall it once you flash cm7 and restore your apps with it.
I forgot to mention it only backs up the actual apk, not your app data as titanium does.

Titanium does a good job of backing up the app along with the app data, such as games. But if you're flashing nightly cm roms on top of each other, you don't need to wipe every time. Full wipe is only necessary if you are going from a nightly to a stable rom, vice versa, or a different rom all together. And don't forget nandroid backup!

Hello everyone. My friend rooted my EVO for me about two months ago and I went CRAZY downloading roms and themes and all sorts if stuff. The problem now is my phone is FULL and so is the SD card. So my question is what can I delete off the phone using astro and still have a functioning phone. Also what can I delete off the SD card? All I want left on my phone is to keep it rooted, keep my current rom, and be able to re sync on Google contacts. I want all the apps and other roms gone.. is my best bet to unroot, hard reset and then root again? Thanks for your help.

All you have to do is go to recovery then wipe or factory reset if you will then wipe your sd card also

Why don't you just delete the zips for roms that you aren't using? You can either use file explorer (or something like it) or put the SD card in a card reader to delete the roms. Should be able to delete the apk's that you don't want too.
You can also connect as a usb memory device to your computer and delete that way.
I would make a copy of your SD card at its present state just in case.
Cranbiz, that's the method I was using but Im not sure which files are pertinent and which ones aren't so i dont want to delete the wrong ones.

I have had similar experience and this is what I've dive:
Backup your SDcard on your PC then format your SDcard, wipe everything, transfer over your desired ROM and flash.
Now you have a clean setup and can pull anything of your backup if you need to.

Flash any ROM just as you did CM7; as for backing up, which you should always do just incase the flash fails, there's an option to backup your current ROM in CWM. Sadly, it gives the backup a generic date/time name so I'd recommend backing up via RM which allows you to name the backup.

I would also recommend getting titanium backup Pro, its only a few $$ and it batch restores your apps. its a time saver if you flash ROMs often.
go to rom manager and click back up rom and name it the name of the rom and the date you backed it up
download titanium backup then open that and click batch then backup all apps and system data
then make a folder and call it ROMS and keep all your roms in there so its nice and organized
wipe and all that good stuff
then go back and flash the new rom the same way you did cm7
then install titanium again then click batch then restore all apps system data
if you dont like it just go back to rom manager and click manage backups and click on it and click restore and itll go back to your cm7

No, no, no ... Never restore system data unless flashing between like ROMs. You want to backup/restore apps and data (not system data).

THIS. Do not restore system data. The only reason to backup and restore system data is if you're planning on doing a complete wipe then re-installing CM7 (for example if you're trying to fix an issue) and want your settings back. Otherwise, don't backup system data!
Also, there's no need to make a new folder called "ROM's" or whatever. All of your backups will be organized (by date by default, but you can rename them) in the Clockwork Recovery folder on your SD card. Its best not to mess with these files (you can remove them and put onto your desktop if you need SD card space, but just leave them if you're worried). These backups don't necessarily have to be initiated by ROM manger either, they can be made while you're in recovery also, which saves you the trouble of having to wait for a reboot before wiping to flash the new ROM

Good tip! But I don't see an option to backup apps and data. Just batch app buckup or batch app buckup + system data.

just hit menu > batch. Then hit "Backup all user apps". That'll back up the apps with the data. Titanium Backup inherently includes the app data with the app backup, it doesn't just backup the plain .apk's.
Also remember that you need to re-backup all the apps before you flash a new ROM, that way the backups are up-to-date with the latest changes you've made to them.

If you backed up your stock ROM just restore it, otherwise check the sticky in the dev forum or the wiki to download the stock ROM

If you've made a backup with ROM manger (nandroid backup) then you can simply restore this. I'm assuming you didn't if you're asking though. Check the wiki or dev section to find a stock rooted ROM. Make sure you get the stock rooted version, otherwise you're going to unroot yourself.

Have you done speedtests to confirm? This could be any number of issues, and I'm sure you're not the only one who has experienced WiFi slowdowns, but there's no known issue in CM7 that affects WiFi speeds.

No I didn't, but i saw The wifi Symbol in The notificationbar showing less bars than IT showed me on my stock ROM.
But i assume it's a Kind of Placebo effect because The wofür symbol in cm7 has Overall less Bars to fill then the stock one

Yea, less bars doesn't mean worse signal necessarily. CM7 reports signal with bars pretty accurately, moreso than the stock ROM for sure. If you want to know for sure, run comparative speed tests, or go to settings > about phone > status and see your WiFi signal strength.

Did I say backups? No, I said roms. When you download roms and put them into a folder called ROMS instead of having them scattered around your SD card. He's asking for suggestions. Not someones opinion on someones suggestion. I'm telling him what I would do. Sorry I don't do everything the way you do it.

Settle down. Seriously. Either way there is no need to create a folder for them. I'd be surprised if he had so many ROMs on his SDcard that he couldn't distinguish between them. They're all named appropriately or you can rename them. Also, there's no need to keep the .zip's on the SDcard after you've flashed anyways.

So say somehow you lose your rm backups and something goes wrong, then you have re download the rom and if you don't have a pc near by, you have to download it from your phone and all of us tmobile users know that downloading a rom uses a good amount of data, so if you wanna download a new one on your phone if you have to, have fun being throttled quicker. A friend of mine had that happen to him, he was ****ed so I let him use my sd card to flash the rom. And I only have glite and the rom I'm running now, I don't have every single rom on xda

If you lose your ROM manager backups, chances are you lost your SDcard, which also contained your initial ROM .zip's (aka lose one, you lose the other). Just keep the .zip's on your computer, its wasted space to have the originals and the backups on the same SDcard. Storage space ain't free.
I don't understand why you would download ROMs continuously over 3G when you can simply wait and download on a computer. Who needs to download a ROM that bad that they would be willing to go over their data cap for it? Seems to be a weird use-case, you clearly wouldn't download a ROM on 3G if you were close to your data throttle. I'm sure at that point your current ROM can last you the rest of the day till you get to a computer.
If you're "somehow losing" your ROM manager backups you might have other issues to deal with first.
I couldn't find it explicitly stated anywhere, I just wanted to know will downgrading gingerbread to get root via the method in the xda wiki delete my apps and everything? Is it a wipe and I need to backup everything? I know I should anyway for safety, but I have a lot of video games with save games and whatnot, and even if I backup these I lose saved games generally with any type of wipe, so I might wait for another method if that's the case. Or will it move more like a standard OTA upgrade where my information is saved? Thanks!

You have to downgrade G2/Desire Z if you are higher than 1.34. I dont think you can root and s-off etc without downgrading. And if you downgrade thats a wipe cause it is like renewing the system or flashing a new rom it wipes everything.
I have downgraded from 2.3.3 stock Desire Z and I am very happy that I did it now I am running latest CyanogenMod and it is so smooth I am amazed.
Is there a preferred backup app that I should use that could preserve app data? Titanium needs root to do that backup.

Hmm I dont think you can take proper backups of app data without root permissions. But I might be wrong ofc. Never heard of it tho.
Use Astro File Manager, or just copy everything from your phone onto the PC.
