Starting off I have experience with rooting, flashing Roms etc. I use to own the Nook Tablet running Cm10.1.
I recently bought the Nexus 7 FHD and was wondering what the most simplistic way of rooting is there for the device. I am happy with my device's UI, I just want root privilege, more specifically so I can use certain apps and connected a PS3 controller to play games.
In summary, I need root privilege without flashing CM or recovery programs.

enter bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
allow the unit to wipe data/cache and reboot
enter bootloader again
fastboot boot twrp.img
In TWRP choose install and select UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.51.zip
TWRP the only way to root? I'd also much rather not wipe my data and cache. Not sure why I would have to for root.

When you unlock the bootloader, the tablet forces you to wipe data and cache as a security measure, otherwise anyone can just bypass your unlock method. You have no choice in the matter.
If you don't unlock the bootloader, /system is write-protected and you can't install root permanently.
You don't need to "install" TWRP. You just run it temporarily to install the root files. The command I gave you just loads twrp into memory to run it. It doesn't flash over the stock recovery.
You probably want to just look at one of the guides. I know you said you had experience with rooting, but probably not familiar with nuances on nexus.
Ahh okay, thank you. Before, recovery programs would flash over stock and I had to use an image file to flash stock back. Annoying.
My other question being what do you suggest me to do about backing up then restoring data and cache? Any apps work good with this PR should I manually back up my data and cache partitions?

CWM Helium work? I know Titanium is only root.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Not sure about non-root backup. The first thing I do is to unlock bootloader so I don't have to redo my efforts, so I usually just use Titanium.
I want to save all my data and cache files including pictures etc. just like it is now. Whatever is best for that. I'm not all that crazy about rooting my new tablet (although the factory image is now released) but I like rooted privileges.

I'm sure there are backup programs that work without root, I just never looked into them. For the images, you should be able to just drag and drop them off the MTP device that shows up when you plug in the nexus to the PC (MTP is the replacement for USB mass storage)
I've found a few guides for rooting. Thanks for the help!

Copy/paste what you can off the devices storage partition, then unlock.
Nexus devices don't require a "hack" to root like other devices. Eventually there will be a non-unlocked method for rooting, but because it is so easy out the box, not much effort goes into finding a workaround.
This is why unlocking is always best to do immediately, even of you don't root or do anything.
Backup apps should work fine without root since it will have read only rights by default. Restoring a backup would require root to write. And Be cautious though because I used titanium backup while being rooted before I switched to a custom rom. When I tried to restore I got errors and the programs got really stupid. I uninstalled a few and they wouldn't let me reinstall at all without error messages. I had to find alternatives. Might be a better way but I didn't spend much time on it. Lost my Riptide 2 save though

I used the Nexus Root Toolkit to backup all my data and cache, and it restored without problem. Helpful application. Thanks to everyone!

So I didn't realize that rooting the phone would wipe all of my data before I started using it. I only had a transformer tablet before, and assumed all rooting was that easy. Lesson learned.
So my question is, since I don't have root, what are my options for backing up all of my application data before I do a fastboot oem-unlock?
please use the search button
this has been asked plenty of time
you simply can not, get ready to lose it all
you only lose it once anyways
rooting doesn't wipe the data, unlocking the bootloader does

I used titanium backup to bring my old apps + app data over from my old phone.
To restore I just put them on my nexus and restored only the necessary apps. This kept all my game saves and stuff.
Everything else was either synced with my google account or some other login.

So after enjoying the phone for a few days it's time to root it.. from what I've read it seems there is no way to root it without having to wipe data.. this would suck to have to wipe before being able to use TB and get a backup of my apps...
So am I reading this right or is there another way?

Use another backup app Mybackup, Ultimate backup...probably more...they don't need root as TB does

Rooting your phone does not wipe anything.
But you have to unlock the bootloader first before you can root, and that wipes everything on your phone, including anything you have saved on your "SD card". That's why I believe it's best, if you eventually intend to root, to at least unlock the bootloader as soon as you get home with your new Gnex. Before you waste any time setting it up.
Thanks for the info! I just assumed all backup programs needed root.. thanks again!

Yes exactly, I made that mistake as well not knowing unlocking the boot loader wipes everything.

Hello!
I am HeroCC, this is my first post, so please don't go hard on me.
I may root my android AT&T S3. But before I do, I want to make sure it is safe, and it fits my specifications.
First of all, I want to know how to do it. If you know a decent tutorial about this, please send it my way.
I have heard about clockwork mod, and was wondering if that is a good choice for a root ROM.
Here is my list:
Does not remove any data
I have a 100% backup before
I can Undo at any time, and I will still have all app data, but not rooted*
It does not trip the flash counter
I still have all the stock apps. (Kies air, AT&T Locker, etc.)
I will add more when I think of some. Thanks for any help!
If you find something that does not fit one of these, reply anyway. Some of these I can do without.
*For example, if I am at level 5 now, and get to level 50 in candy crush, and need to unroot, I will still be at level 50 after.
Thank you for your Help!
There are at least three different ways to root this phone, with; casual, cf-auto root, or by flashing TWRP or CWM recovery through Odin and then supersu.zip. I'm not going to recommend one root method here because someone else will just recommend the other and confuse things.
You are likely going to trip the flash counter no matter what you do, but you can reset it to zero whenever you want with an app called triangle away.
Also, you will need the app titanium backup to backup your apps and settings, so if you unroot or factory reset, you can restore them without losing your data.

Just a note, backing up and restoring with titanium backup ONLY works with root. Say you backup while rooted, unroot, then find missing data, you can't restore the titanium backup since no root anymore..

OK, thanks. Using these methods, what one does not require you to do a factory reset? And is there a way to completely backup my phone before I root? Thanks for the info!

None of them require a factory reset.
Technically, modifying the phone's software in any way can void your warranty, and technically you are not rooted until you have modified the phone to obtain superuser permissions through the operating system. I'm assuming that you want a backup before obtaining superuser permissions, or rooting. The only way would be to flash a custom recovery through Odin, which also modifies the phone and trips its flash counter, which signals that you modified something and still voids your warranty. That flash counter can be reset later, however.
So to answer your second question;
Can you make a backup of your phone before rooting? Technically, Yes.
But can you make a backup of your whole phone without modifying the phone in any way and possibly endangering your warranty? No.

OK. Thanks. This is what I needed. I will now list my plan of action. Let me know it you think it is good! My device is the Galaxy s3 ATT. I just realized that my warranty expires in December. I thought it already had, so I am going to wait until it is done. This is what I am going to do in December.
1. Download Rom Manager
2. Use Carbon/ Helium to backup.
3. Use ROM Manager to install ClockWork mod Recovery.
4. Perform Nandroid backup.
5. (Optional) install CyanogenMod.
I will add more as I think of them. And all of the above will work without a factory reset? Thanks!
Unrelated: Is there a z4mod for my phone? I saw it had temp root and may use that to use titanium backup before I start this.

If you are not rooted you will not be able to use ROM manager or any other app to install a custom recovery. You need to use ODIN to achieve this without root. Since you are on Jellybean most likely, going into a custom recovery will trip your counter no matter what. I would highly recommend using CF auto root to root since you lose no data. It will trip your counter but this is likely to happen no matter what you do.

You can easily root your phone without tripping your counter. There are so many parts on this, and exactly what you're talking about. Just read the forum posts and everything is answered.

Clockwork and TWRP will flash CM without a pc. Not sure about the other.
BlakKat Nexus 5 was here foo!
Reason I ask is cause I've been stuck in hospital for couple days now & bored & brave enough to try it with other opinions in my favor, last question is since I have the file on my device is a reliable Wi-Fi connection necessary cause I don't know if I'd trust the hospitals Wi-Fi

if the file is on your internal sd you don't need wifi to flash with twrp. I would recommend making a backup of(nandroid) in case you have problems that require a pc! then your really stuck!
I did backup using twrp, is that considered a nandroid backup? I saved that backup file to Dropbox, had the correct cm11, gapps & SuperSU 2.2 zip files, then I done the dumbest thing & wiped all data including internal storage I guess cause my main device is a RAZR M which has separate sd card storage, so can I use adb sideload when I get back to my PC to install that backup I made?
Thanks for ur help in advance
Sent from my XT907 using XDA Free mobile app
Since you're stuck in a hospital for a few days, why don't you use the time to read up and learn? Just sayin'.
Yes, a nandroid is a backup made with TWRP or CWM. You don't sideload a nandroid, you restore it in recovery.
So you had CM11, Gapps, and SuperSU on your SD but then deleted everything? Or do you still have them available to be flashed in recovery? If you don't have anything on your SD, boot into recovery and push either the nandroid or CM11/Gapps/SuperSU to the SD. If you don't know how to do that, you use adb push. If you don't understand that, Google it.
Yeah thanks man, I actually deleted all the cache & internal storage thanks to twrp u can do it in 1 go & I wasn't thinking cause I'm used to having an external SD that I would have files like cm11 & gapps so without thinking I hit clear on everything wiping out my all files but I gather from ur statement I can install the backup I saved to my Dropbox
Thanks to anyone who gave me advice though

I suppose when I get back to my PC I can just flash Cyanogenmod & be done with it
But I'll definitely keep that backup I made of stock KitKat though
Sent from my XT907 using XDA Free mobile app
Yeah, download the backup/nandroid from Dropbox, put your phone into recovery and make sure adb recognizes it, then type 'adb push [insert file name here] /sdcard'. That command will only work if you place the backup into the same directory as adb.
Just wanted to say thanks to anyone who gave me advice & report that I was finally able to restore my nexus 7 using the nexus root toolkit

Can someone point me to directions on sideloading 5.0.2 for the Nexus 7 2013 wifi edition?
I'm on 5.0 with root and wanted to take the OTA to 5.0.2 but when I try to install it, the tablet boots into TWRP recovery and I don't know if I can do anything from there.
I tried downloading 5.0.2 from a website and using twrp recovery to flash it, but it failed. Maybe it wasn't for the wifi tablet.
I looked into reinstalling stock recovery but it doesn't seem all that easy.
If someone can even just point me to a thread with some info, that would be great!
Easiest thing to do would be to download this ROM and flash it in recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nex.../rom-factory-stock-rooted-rom-lrx22g-t3004110
I was able to get sick recovery back using the nexus root tool kit. I wiped data and cache but I lost everything... Pictures and documents as well as APS. I knew I'd lose apps though.
I did a backup with TB but the backup for wiped out as well. I never change the settings in TB, so the backup was made to the tablet and not the SD card.
I had a few things saved to the SD card and they're gone too. It really sucks that I lost my photos. I didn't have a lot nor anything really important but still. I could never figure out how to get the camera to save photos to the SD card and not internal storage.
Anyway. I gave up for tonight. If I try to take the OTA update, the tablet reboots and I just get the android on his back with the error message. I'm going to try removing root and see if that helps. I'm back to stock otherwise.. Nothing frozen and nothing uninstalled.
