[Q] App to replace broken power button for safe shutdown/reboot? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone.. been around the forums a lot and, thanks to all of you, became fairly experienced in rooting, roms, clockwork mod and so on.. but lately I've been having some issues which I have not been able to find much in useful information...
First of all, my power button has decided that it would rather stay pressed all the time. I've tried many different suggestions I have read on many different forums in addition to XDA, with no luck. Since I am no stranger to taking things apart and electronics and such, I eventually decided to take the phone apart (using the Captivate I got free with the phone plan as backup) and attempt to clean out the button, along with some dust that had gotten behind the glass. This helped for a while, but wasn't perfect.. and the issue eventually came back full bore..
ANYWAY... until I can figure out how to replace the button... Does anybody know of an app that can either emulate the power button/bring up power menu, or just do a proper shutdown/reboot thats safe for data2__ type roms?
All I can do at the moment is either battery pull or Rom Manager.
Second... FYI the power button issue makes it VERY difficult to change out a corrupted memory card with ext partition with a new card without being able to cold boot the phone into recovery mode!! (because you can't select recovery from the HBOOT menu using the power button..)
Thank you so much for any help anyone can offer!

You try the app that says in this thread?
Screen off and lock and quick boot
To use last app you need to be root

Thank you for the suggestion
Yes, I have, but that app does the "hard reset/shutdown" (same way Rom Manager does it) that tends to not be good with the data2ext version I have been using :/
I suppose worse case I would have to just switch to a2sd+ rom.. from what I understand the hard reboot (and even battery pull) doesn't mess with those, correct? Still trying to wrap my head around all the different types. I like the data2__ stuff because it shows the actual available app space when using a widget like System Info

*bump*
Still looking for an app/widget that can bring up the Rom's actual power menu...
Is this even possible?

try PowerBoot

Sister's Droid Inc is Incredibly Messed Up

For about the last 2 months my sister's Incredible has been acting incredibly wonky.
1. It is getting the infamous low application data message when she has plenty of storage.
2. The track ball does its own thing and turns pages by its self on the home screen.
3. The Power button is hit and miss. This thread explains it very well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091064
So what is going on guys? Its on Stock with unrevoked Root... No Custom roms or custom kernals. Any help for the above problems is much appreciated.
Sounds like the phone is just going downhill. Hope she has insurance

The first can easily be solved by one of the awesome custom roms available, the other two seem to be hardware problems.
Hope this helps
I would back up her SMS (use something like SMS backup & restore. Doesn't require root) to her SD card and then back up her SD card. Make sure her contacts are all synced to google and not the phone and then do a restore of the phone. Bringing it back to stock and factory will help you make sure if it is a hardware issue or a software issue. If it is a software issue, root the phone and install another ROM.
Sometimes the trackball gets dirty. Blow it clean and that may solve at lest one problem. Might help the power button too.
OK, now it is really bad. Pressing the power button does absolutely nothing. It does not bring up the lockscreen! Is there a root tweak where the trackball can turn the phone on? She is having to plug her phone in to wake the screen up!

Yup, I know CM7 has it and I'm sure other Sense roms have it as well.

G2 reverts itself to previous day?

Hi guys, my friend has an unrooted, stock gingerbread G2 that every so often will turn itself off and revert itself a couple of days. Like a nandroid restore almost. Say he takes some pictures and downloads some apps. A few days later it will crash and turn itself back on, but the apps and pictures he downloaded will be gone and it will be as if he never downloaded them. I'm not sure how else to describe it.. any ideas? He says he thinks it has to do with putting music on it because whenever he puts on new music it will crash and revert shortly after to before the music was put on the phone.

I cannot imagine how that would be possible without some sort of backup/restore software that would need root. Sure your mate isn't winding you up?
that sounds strange...
maybe he should do a real factory reset or wipe cache?
EDIT: push power & volume down to enter bootloader / here choose recovery and red triangle will show up then press power & volume up to enter recovery (just for the case that you don´t know, because you seem to have a nexus)
That sounds like a serious problem, either he's pulling your leg or something is wrong with the phone. I'd definitely say backup whatever he needs, and then give wiping the phone a chance because losing pictures and data like that isn't cool.
I've heard that some ROMs writeback and requires a complete shutdown or restart cycle to commit various information and the new stock gb might be doing that.
Try having your friend do a restart (proper one, not battery pulling) after the installation of apps and all that to see if the problem persists. If it does, then I would suggest a factory wipe and start from scratch since something is really screwing with your friend's phone

Hi guys, thanks for the responses!
I don't think he's pulling my leg because he's not the kind of person to do something like that, nor does he really know enough about phones to just think of something like this on the spot..
I will have him try to do a proper reset as mputtr suggests before doing a full wipe, but in any event thanks again for the ideas

You can go to menu/settings/advanced(CM) settings/display/ then check screen on animations. Not sure which of his roms you are talking about but if it's one of his AOSP roms this will help.

Hi thanks- ya there is no 'advanced settings' and the setting on animations is 'all animations' instead of no or some. I am just going to partition another card and get 'the express' rom which seems like the rom to have...

The Express is an awesome rom, you wont be disappointed.
Ya I tried to flash it last nite but my desktop is not recognizing any devices through usb which explains why I get an error that my printer is not connected when I try to use it... one thing after another

Thanks man- I just reread your advice on animations and I think you meant 'no' animations instead of 'on'. I just set it to no animations and the home screen seems to come back now out of the time out screen. I have to hit the power button a few times, the lit menu buttons go out and when they come back on I've got a screen.
Do you know if I can install a blank sd card into the phone?- to partition to install 'the express' once I can flash it from my computer which is the only way I know how.
Thanks again,
Tj

No need for a new card unless your upgrading. Either way, if it is your current or a new sd, BACK IT UP TO THE PC first. And yes I saw that your pc is not recognizing the device, sounds like you will need to install the proper drivers (to your pc) for it to work. I would suggest going to this guide -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386911 I believe HipKat has all the steps for what your wanting to do, laid out much better than I can chicken peck on this keyboard, lol.
Good luck!

Hey Jamie- I found since someone shut the pc down improperly that's what caused Windows to now recognize things- I actually just unplugged it and going to give it a few before plugging it back in. I should be good to go. The only other problem I am having since selecting no animTions is the display brightness is at the lowest setting. Trying to adjust/ autoi does nothing. Any advice on that one?- heading out for a late breakfast and going to flash the express when I get back but this phone is hard to.see till then for incoming calls- thanks god I have a tablet. Figuring how to.root that thing will be interesting.

Under settings/display de-select auto brightness. Should be a toggle in your power menu as well.

Hey thanks again Jamie- I had a new 8 gig micro sd card so I took my original out and put that in and partitioned as one tutorial had it laid out using Amon RA Recovery? The partitioning went well and I got the Express ROM on and installed nice except for a small issue the timeout or lock screen won't come out of lock screen unless I remove the the battery. I did what you told me to do on the Sinister ROM and switched the animations off and was able to come out of the idle or lock screen after about a dozen presses of the power button. Apparently it wasn't the Rom. Half the time I can't answer a call. I read a post on this site a last week on this same issue someone else had. The solution was some type of "pack" supposedly needed to be installed to the ext partition or something like that. I have tried to find that post ever since and cannot since. When I gohit 'search this forum' and the search field appears, the keyboard appears then disappears. Do youyou know anyone I maybe able to get into contact with that would be able to help me resolve this? So what type of devices do you have. I've also got the Samsung Galaxy 4G LTE 10.1 that I tether to which is nice.
I have been having a bit of a time finding solutions to certain things on here...

If you have your brightness set to the lowest, i've noticed that is what screws up unlocking for me. set your brightness higher as soon as you turn your phone on and see if that helps

Just got my gsm nexus and I like it but.....

Last night I updated to the latest ics update so I'm on 4.0.4. I've noticed it shuts off by itself occasionally. Even now at work, phone is laying flat and it shut off once. Also this morning driving to work phone was on my dash and it shut off. Both times phone was in sleep mode and I didn't know it shut off completely until I tried to turn screen on with volume keys or power button. I would then of course have to hold down power button to start phone up again. I haven't rooted or anything , I'm stock. I've tried tapping the back by the battery to see if something was loose but nothing happened.
Maybe some of you guys have experienced the same. Will this go away when I start rooting and romming ,or do I have defective hardware?
So no-one? So far I looked online and someone mentioned putting paper under battery to hold it tighter against contacts? I'm trying that but not sure if it's making battery hotter. I'll see if that works.
Also called Google just in case I have to go through the returning process which I hope not to go through this is what they emailed me for my issue.
" Greetings and salutations,
Thank you for contacting Google. It was my pleasure assisting you today. Many issues can be resolved by performing a hard reset by removing the battery or by factory data resetting your device, but first I'd like you to try removing the battery, wiping it clean with lint free cloth, as well as the prongs that connect to the battery itself. Try this a few times, if it does not work this should. Be sure to backup any personal files you may have on the device.
To factory data reset your device, touch the Settings icon from your ‘Home’ or ‘All Apps’ screen, then select ‘Backup & reset’ under ‘Personal.’
If you're unable to get to your Settings menu, follow the steps below:
1. Power down your device 2. Press and hold both volume keys and the power button to enter Bootloader mode 3. Press the volume keys to cycle to the Recovery mode option 4. Press the power button to select Recovery mode 5. From the Recovery mode screen, press and hold the Power button then press the Volume up button. 6. Use the volume buttons to select wipe data/factory reset. 7. Select Yes -- delete all user data. 8. The factory data reset process will now start. Once its finished, select 'Reboot system now.

I better root and try a Rom asap huh?
I'd say get a replacement for it while you still can.
yeah getting a replacement could be the wisest thing to do
altho if when you received it in 4.0.1 it wasnt randomly shutting then something might've gone wrong with the update so you can unlock your bootloader and flash some ROMs to see how that goes
I definitely want to try some roms before I replace it as I have some time under Samsung's waranty. I also want to gently pull the contacts out a bit with small pliers to see if it holds the battery better. I'll even clean the contacts.
Man I'm hoping it's software ...

Gently pull the contacts out? Wouldn't that void your warranty? I'd be careful with the hardware if I were you.
Unless your battery contacts on the phone are smashed/deformed, it is unlikely that the battery connection is being physical broken at the contacts. The battery fits fairly snug in the compartment and the contacts stay touching even when the battery is partially removed. Probably no benefit to placing a piece of paper in there. Also keep in mind your NFC is in the battery.
I am also using a "Yakju" device from Google Play. No similar issue on 4.0.4 stock or CM9. At least not this nightly build : )
I actually got the GSM nexus yesterday and I had the exact same problem. The phone powered itself off twice. Once right after I turned it on and again about two hours later. Both times it occurred when I was moving around with the phone.
I pulled the battery and popped it back in a few times and it hasn't happened since.

You guys are probably right. The battery does already feel snug in there.
As I'm reading through forums for my issue, I can't believe how many sgn users are experiencing the same thing I am, some even reboots. Alot of them think it's apps. Good chance I'll exchange for the another device with same issue. I'm starting to wonder if this is why Google dropped the price.
Can't wait to get home and mess with this more. Hopefully I can make it go away.
I had this same problem when I first got mine with random reboots an powering off by itself, after about 2 weeks the problem went away, don't ask me how it seem to magically go away by itself maybe because battery needed time to settle in with the charging process.

I'm happy to report, knock on wood, that after I factory reset the phone the problem seems to have gone away. Last night I used the toolkit to unlock bootloader and root, and I flashed cm9 nightly and all is good so far. My only problem now is I dont know which rom to try next
I definitely want something with led customizations like cm9 has, thats just so old school reminds me of a blackberry .
Any suggestions, I guess I can also ask elsewhere.

I use light flow. It also lets me customize both LED and audio notification per app

I had light flow going when my phone would shut itself off. It doesnt include alot of the apps I use to customize so I'm not the biggest fan of it now. I think the cm9 led customizations is sufficient as it lets you add any of your apps regardless.
Aokp has more features and is most popular so you could try that. Then try paradigm rom. I done use light flow, I just have a few led colors from stock and its enough for me for now. Google voice green, handcent texts blue, and Gmail and calls white. All from the stock apps.
Black ice is good so far. So many different variations of aokp roms I guess, its hard to recommend the "best" one.

[Q] Endless reboot loop even when trying to enter recovery

One beautiful day the phone just restarted from itself. (wasnt really shocked though) After that it entered again into a boot loop, Im saying again because it happened once before and i noticed it was the SD Card and I just had to format it. So far so good, but now it doesnt matter if I pull out the SD Card or SIM, even battery... once ive put the battery the phone starts booting from it self and restarts everytime on a different place, like samsung logo, CM logo, CWM recovery, download mode.. it just cant stay on one place so i can choose an option. Only once ive managed to do a cache and dalvik wipe, also didnt help. Keeps rebooting and rebooting. Ive tried different ways of booting, with USB cable, with the recharger adaptor and without them. Left it for a whole night without battery, didnt help. I cant even manage to flash the stock ROM again, still reboots. I thought the power button was stuck or something, tried moving it arround but also didnt help. If you ask how many time Ive flashed the device... well perhaps countless, about 40 times counting the stock firmware. (maybe this number for some other maniacs is little, but now i see it like too much, because im kinda attached to this phone, the previous HD2 suffered a lot more xD) So guys my question is, do you have any suggestions? Ive searched the internet to check if the symptoms are close to hard brick but... didnt really saw any identity.
So.....
Normal boot.....it reboots, shuts off reboots.......?
Recovery mode.....reboots, shuts off, reboots.......?
Download mode.....reboots, shuts off, reboots......?
Battery insertion.....reboots, shuts off, reboots.......?
Same sequence every time?
Irrespective of which of the above scenarios is taking place?
If you just sat and watched it without pressing any buttons, will it endlessly reboot, shut off, reboot?.....
During this cycle, does it get to the same point in the boot process before restarting?.....

Thank you! I thought nobody will answer. It reboots right after passing 3 to 5 seconds, sometimes on the CM Samsung splash, sometimes on the spinning CM circle(boot loading image), when i succeed entering CWM or download mode reboots again. I cant boot it normally and reach the home screen. I read something that it could be from the kernel boot code, im using CM 10 (if im not guessing wrong).
I've answered a number of threads in the XDA W forum where members were experiencing similar issues to yourself. I doubt it's software related as during access to download mode and recovery mode , the phone isn't even using the "main" system software and kernel....these modes use their own independent kernel and system (it would be HIGHLY unlikely that two separate systems and two separate kernels are suffering from the same fault).
If all of the symptoms I wrote about in my original reply apply to your phone, then it all points towards a faulty power button.
As I understand it, Samsung uses a type of button commonly referred to as "temporary push to make" which means that when you push the button, two contacts are bridged to make an electrical connection but when you release the button the contact is broken. Under normal circumstances, this "make, break" sequence will start a normal boot sequence. Under normal conditions, long pressing this button again will begin the shutdown process. Now assume for a moment that the button has become damaged....where this contact that is meant to be momentary, has in fact become permanent......the result would be a phone that will attempt to start up and shut down in an endless cycle....basically, YOUR phone........
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Yeah, I also thought that as a reason but discarded it quickly because the button doesnt have any problems when pushing it. I mean it freely comes back when pushed and i can also freely push it without problems. Also discarded that problem because i thought the button cant stop the booting cycle while booting, but it seems like it can. Thanks for all the answering I will try fixing it and will report as soon as possible.
The plastic button is separate to the electrical part I described....so it is entirely possible for the part you normally touch to *seem* to be working as it should.....only for it to work against the faulty electrical part........
And yes, that type of fault IS caused by the permanent contact of a faulty electrical button. Anybody who has a normally booting W (as I do) can re create this fault simply by pressing and holding the power button......the phone WILL enter a boot/shut down/reboot cycle for as long as the button is held........
The same condition can be re created on my S2 in exactly the same way as well.....
Sent from my Infected KitKat bar.....
Well.. bad news.. i've managed to disassemble it, tried to see whats wrong with the button (not the plastic one), tried moving it arround, nothing seems to be damaged, still stable at one place, also tried booting the phone 3 times without any covers and the result was the same...
Perhaps i should drive it to service.
Check your date of purchase.....Samsung phones have a two year warranty.......

Well bad luck here also, i got it almost brand new from England and I'm not from England. I bought it over online shop sold as a second hand long time ago, it was just a matter of time to damage him. Thanks anyway for all the help, I'll see what i can do with the service.
Bad luck mate.....word of caution though.....as you've found out, the button is soldered directly to the motherboard, Samsung's "modus operandi" seems to be rather than attempt to repair the button, simply replace the entire MB........for a phone that is outside warranty, this will have (erm) "cost implications" lol......basically they like to charge as much as they can in situations like these.....eg/ board replacement when button repair would be enough.....

as most of you guys experienced this issue, what would you guys suggest me to do with my phone? i wish to save this phone for sentimental reason. would change the button DIY-ly is worth it? is it available for me to get the parts?
or did you guys manage to get a better solution?
