Hey DEFY users...I decided to buy a defy few days back! But I thought it'd be nice to consult with you guyz before I buy it!
Firstly my budget is around $300-$330. I compared this with Galaxy Ace, Nexus One. But I thought it's the best because the set is pretty solid with dust & water proof.
However, I've used Galaxy Ace for a month. The rooting procedure, custom recovery & flashing ROMs were pretty easy there! But when I look through those process in Motorola Defy it seems pretty hard 2 me
Anyways...I love CyanogenMOD. I hate Motoblur UI. I saw a page for DEFY in http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices/motorola-defy . But I found no ROM download links there! Wiki pages doesn't have informations also

Defy RC on CyanogenMOD.COM Screens
So 1 question..Should I buy it?
its definitely better than Galaxy Ace and Nexus One. Rooting procedure is fairly simple, just a matter of installing an apk (if you use z4root or gingerbread). Installing custom roms is also not a problem, just read the guides carefully. If you did it correct once, than its easy the next time... and its really really hard to brick the defy because of locked bootloader. Enjoy!!
EDIT: I want to change my statement and say, its definitely better than Galaxy Ace and a good competitor with Nexus One but for the cheaper price, and its ability to be overclock, Defy had more value for money

Thanks Man! I was also thinking that! After reading the guidelines maybe it won't be too hard! Besides, CyanogenMOD is only in RC phase now. I hope it'll be stable soon with 720p Recording
My wife and I both have a Defy running MIUI 1.9.2 and love them. Rooting and flashing is actually really easy. There are several guides on flashing CM7 and other ROMS. It's a great phone in my opinion, it's durability can't be beat.
Sent from my MIUI Defy @1300mhz using XDA App
Thanks @Angelus47
the title should be, i BOUGHT a DEFY!!
^^ oh yes defy is anyday better than other phones in same range end of story
Hi Defy guys
I'm gonna buy a Defy too
Also been looking at a couple of options:
HTC Desire - £239.99
Moto Defy - £219.99
Orange Monte Carlo - £119.99/£159.99
Have around £250 max to spend and would rather a new handset with a receipt. Previously owned a HD2 but it was repaired twice and eventually couldn't be repaired anymore.
Looking for something tough-ish, decent performance, preferably not HTC - I feel burned by them!
Anything else I should be getting, really torn towards the defy so much that it's reserved for pick up! ha ha
Defy is standalone one of a kind performer in its "class" , no doubt. Not to mention the fact it can be overclocked upto 1.3 Ghz and the battery just stands whatever you throw at it. So unless you wanna raise the standards up a notch I'd say go for the DEFY eyes closed.
It's the best phone in it's class. Hardy anyone beat defy at it price.best yøµ should have one.
Picking it up today, can't wait!!
This is the best phone I've ever used and I've used a few...
Better than iphone 3GS, SGS, HD2, Pre2 and I'm sure the list goes on...
Outstanding! and I haven't even flashed a custom rom yet, it's so good I might leave it as stock for a while..
Hey..need a quick help on my query..i have preinstalled 2.2.2 out of box (india)..can I flash cm7 directly or do I have to flash that nordic version first?
@Duflet: Just my opinion, I cant wait for my defy....
@govinda123: Thats no Problem, you can start with any froyo ROM.
This is a good guide to help you install CM7 (its not mine thanks to: pjgowtham )

U don't need to flash Nordic if u have Froyo preinstalled! I had the same question & I asked it before. Take a look here
My opinion (having had my defy since feb, bro and partner both have SGS i9000s, partner had a galaxy i5500 before that, mum has an LG P500, and colleagues have Orange San Fran and various HTCs)...
Defy running stock firmware is pretty bad. It isn't usable as a serious smartphone because it gets so bogged down in lag, FCs, etc. Maps was unusable on moto 2.2 firmware.
Defy running CM7 is the best Android phone I've used. Quick, responsive, stable.
Other manufacturers are apparently taking notice, as both Sony (Xperia Active) and Samsung (Galaxy XCover) are coming out with ruggedised smartphones. However, both of those phones only have 480x320 displays, while Defy has 854x480. I'm not sure why those manufacturers believe that you must compromise this aspect of a ruggedised phone?
Anyway, to those new Defy owners in this thread - Congratulations, welcome, and get CM7. NOW!

I want SUPER AMOLED and 4" screen!!!!!
I guess, I will use HTC Desire for a while ... I cannot keep waiting and waiting for new device!
From Engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/samsung-announces-galaxy-s-android-smartphone/
Would pick HTC over Samsung anyday..
Really is a shame - from seeing the pictures.. They're essentially copying the iPhone UI - with a little bit of Sense aswell..
Can't see myself wanting this at all - only when HTC release the Supersonic will i want something more than the HTC Desire.
Samsung also wants to get sued by Apple.
Seriously though, there are just so many ways to make a sensible user interface. I agree that the bottom four icons look strangely familiarly places, but they are probably exchangeable. Which the icons on iPhone are not, if I'm not mistaking?
Nah I want desire more then this one. I hate the touchwiz interfaces from samsung they never were good in my opinion. Also I really don''t like the look of most samsung devices. They look a bit cheap to me.
If u live in the US then cancel your order now!! Not because of the Samsung phone, but because of this!

like the HD2 4.3" is too big for a phone
Yeah it might look shiny and nice, but don't be fooled.. ;?D
Here's some reason I don't like it:
1. It's a Samsung. They have many great products in many categories, but phones? Nah.. "My" experience with samsung phones (Haven't own one, but friends and family have..) is that you shouldn't expect the best build quality and even if the UI has its pros, the cons will nag you.. Forever! ;?P
2. I think the UI looks a lot (a lot!) like the UI on the IPhone (They must have looked once or twice on the IPhone) with some "extra quirks". And frankly that isn't a good thing.
( - We need a new ui for our Android-phone. - HTC sense is sooo done! - Oh, I know!! Lets copy the [ridiculously] popular IPhone, that should be a good selling point..)
Aim for the Evo 4g instead (or settle with the Desire ;?D )
Just for fun.. tweetphoto.com/15554598

Um...maybe if the handset was GSM. It is going to a CDMA carrier (Sprint). Hate to say it, but I think I will just wait it out for the Desire.
Here is a comparison of the 2
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/htc-evo-4g-vs-hd2-and-desire-fight/
The HTC Evo 4G is a beast of a device, but if you're not on sprint there's no point.
Also keep in mind that the Desire has more RAM (576 vs 512) and an AMOLED screen.
The Samsung is a sad excuse for a superphone, that filthy skin makes it look like a dumbphone OS. Not to mention you won't have the strong community support that HTC devices do.

the icons were the 1st thing reminding me of the iphone
Galaxy S is a just another example of a great hardware ruined with the crap Samsung customization. I really like the huge Super AMOLED screen (actually it is amazing) + 1GHz CPU, but this pitiful copy of the iPhone's UI is simply disgusting, especially when the stock Android is excellent on itself. They simply shouldn't touch it.
And in addition, I still remember how Samsung abandoned their i7500 customers with refusing to release future OS updates for this handset. Personally, I'm going to stay away from Samsung's phones in the future.
After a long night and good sleep, I made up my mind
I will keep HTC Desire Because I cannot stand the Samsung Galaxy S iPhoneness look.
And I have a strong feeling that HTC is keeping a secret superphone with better specs.
Probably: 1.5GHz Snapdragon, 4+" AMOLED screen, 1080p HD recording, TV-out
Why? Because in June, there will be iPhone 4G announcement.
And HTC will use that secret superphone to out-done iPhone 4G.
At least, I will do that if I am HTC, I must have a strategy to stay on top. They don't need to rush another superphone, they have already quite some superphones ... our beloved HTC Desire. If this happen, it would be another 1 year to replace HTC Desire ... not bad eh? Now I am happy.
HTC Evo? Nah, CDMA is useless in Europe, at least in my country.
Agree with the first post.
Much talk about getting the next and the next and the next phone.
Even if you say:
"-Ill go for the new samsung" or whatever, there will always be
a new phone in the pipe-line with a better spec.
You'll be dead before even getting a phone that way.
Desire is a super nice phone.
Right size, and right look if you ask me.

since JPH is still buggy, they'd better work harder and give it some time

6 Days To supposedly release
http://www.timeanddate.com/counters...&month=09&day=23&hour=12&min=00&sec=00&p0=195
It wouldn't surprise me.. Software development is never a definitive process. It's impossible to determine how long something will take. Sometimes it takes quicker than expected, sometimes longer.
as i said elsewhere, if they cancel release and work on it further before releasing it's a good thing for us.
if they release the current version they will prolly stop working on fixing the important stuff
if they dont and delay further it means they have realized the "important stuff" REQUIRES fixing before release
in a nutshell:
- RFS performance (replacement would be neat but they are too proud of their own FS or smth.. weird)
- GPS accuracy ( /pray ?)
- Reported critical software bugs (exchange, etc)
Luckily they read XDA
Just a question - how is this question for development section?

Please note that this message is for the Singapure upgrade:
Jerahmeel Zacky Chua So Galaxy S was first released in SG... Are we the first to get Froyo too?

Samsung Mobile Singapore Hi Jerahmeel, unfortunately not. Europe will be getting it first. SG should still be getting at end of Sep.
Samsung UK mobile on twitter are still giving out the "end of September " answer on Twitter so...... who knows. I'd say samsung but I'm starting to doubt that!
We'll just have to wait and see right?
I prefer they another week or 2 to really finalize it and fix all the bugs before releasing instead of rushing for a release which only disappoints.
cheers man, I am personally not offended but some people might be a bit more PC
ontopic: i wouldn't mind upgrading to froyo knowing it had bugs, but at the same time knowing it would get updated within a reasonable time frame. the problem we have with samsung (apart from having to put up with their developing "skills") is that they are very quiet. you only find out about stuff per semi-dodgy twitter or facebook accounts.
very likely samsung is rushing froyo to pre-empt the Desire HD which ships with froyo. (and early previews seems to indicate a very mature froyo at that) and latest reports says the Desire HD may even ship a week earlier...so our buddy Mr Sam Sung is in a bit of a bind here....lol.
rushed the 2.1 to pre-empt the iphone4 and now trying to rush 2.2 to pre-empt the HD....tough being mr sam.
And then they'll rush their new gingerbread phone to market and forget all about their galaxy s customers..... :/

Well if they forget about their Galaxy S customers with regard to Gingerbread, they wont be doing themselves any favours with a phone that's been on the market a less than a year.
I know new Android phones are constantly being released but Samsung will not announce a new phone as soon as Gingerbread is released.
The Galaxy S will still be a flagship product and companies will need to take a leaf out of Nokia's book.
Look how many people stuck with the likes of Nokia for many years.
Companies like Samsung producing Android phones need to start getting their act together with the OS, otherwise it'll end up as a one horse race and the likes of HTC will end up with the largest slice of the market.
I don't expect to see any proper froyo for SSGS in the near future.
However Samsung should at least release the official GPS fix within this September since this problem is already a know issue for a long time and they can have separate development between this and the froyo one.
the galaxy s line is selling very well, so i'd guess that they can not afford to let us standing in the rain when comparable htc/motorola devices get gingerbread. as to the froyo update: i hope they take their time to improve speed and fix the remaining bugs. at least for us 'power-users' (flashers) it would be preferable that they release an official froyo firmware (INCLUDING the SOURCE -> voodoo fix) but improve it further over the next month or 2...
If anyone here remembers me, I was a big fan of my "budget" HTC Touch 2 and many may people also loved it and wanted android on it.
The ZTE Racer is basically just that. Seriously, if there are any touch 2 fans reading this who want android on their phone, fork out £90 and thats what you'll be buying. 2.8" QVGA screen same as touch 2, similar looks/performance and Android 2.1. I am seriously loving it at the minute despite its budget pricetag and would dearly like to see devs cooking up some custom ROMs for it (much like touch2 fans fight for hardspl...which jockyw2001 provided in a matter of minutes in his free time)
So, is anyone else with me for a ZTE Racer/ZTE Blade subforum? Can XDA do this for us if there is enough interest?
It seriously is a lovely little phone, much like my much loved and missed HTC Touch 2 (damn you cornwall and your amazing countryside walks!)

I bought ZTE Racer a few weeks ago and the only thing i managed to do by now is only to root the phone...
It's a really nice model, but it's relatively new on the market and there is very little support.
For example wanted to install some custom themes or to enter recovery mode...
I couldn't find tuts or how to`s for either of those...
Well im thinking of upgrading sadly but its only a thought
maybe a HTC Wildfire
or ZTE Balde (aka Orange San Fransisco)
To get in recovery mode hold the down button while turning phone on and release button when wrighting appears only works for rooted phones

Hi,
I'm a newbie to the Android and smart Phone. I have bought DELL XDC28 which is basically a ZTE RACER (I guess ). I want to upgrade the 2.1 to 2.2 Android and i have downloaded Clockwork,FastBoot and Update.rar files and i have also downloaded the ROM Manager.
I have done the fast boot command from the command prompt for clockwork recovery image .but when i reboot the phone by pressing the power and vol+ or vol- nothing happens the DELL Logo appears and nothing happens. I guess it does not boot in the recovery mode. I also installed the ROM manager and tried boot from it but did not workout. It simply hangs on the Dell Logo.
What could be the problem ? I shall be very much thankful if you could help me out.
Thanks In Advance
How is everyone rooting their phone? I've tried Superoneclick, Universal Android Root and Z4root. All apps are supposedly successfull at getting root access but apps that require root access are unable to do so. With Z4Root, I can select temporary root which works perfectly but root access is gone after reboot.
Vote UP for Zte Racer subforum. Any admin?
Can't find it. Still no subforum?
Come on admins, the ZTE Racer now has CM7 Nigtlies (almost) every day, custom kernels, guides and so on...
The roms are on many other forums, I think the Racer deserves some love here on XDA. It's basically just the ZTE Blade minus the camera and screen res.

My mum currently has the Vodafone 845 which has a severely cracked screen. I've been looking around and the best phone I can see for what she is willing to pay is the Defy. I will be buying this from a parallel import store as it's ~$450 nzd vs $800 nzd from a normal retail store. What I want to know is whether or not it's worth getting a Defy now that the offical 2.2 Froyo rom has been released. I have flashed custom roms on my i9000 but not sure how difficult it would be to flash a custom rom on the Defy.
Any opinions would be much appreciated.
This isnt much of an answer but i love mine, some people say they are laggy but they must not have used a ZTE Blade, i could rip my hair out when i use my Blade.
get it ,you will not regret
The defy's hardware is great, but I personally don't really like the MOTOBLUR software. That's no big deal, since you can flash various custom ROMs. So I'd say the Defy is totally worth getting.
According to the GSMArena review the browser doesn't support text reflow. is this true?
You should definitely get it. It is my first smartphone and managed to flash ROM easily. This forum helps a lot. Currently running (and not lagging) CM7 by Quarx.

Easy. You can change your browser. I use Opera, but there's a lot more out there.
I hope you are aware of the Camera quality which isn't as good as a 5MP cam should be. Its pretty much useless in low light. Apart from this, Defy rocks!

Easy! you'll find lots of guides and tutorials, it was my first android cell and I was able to update to 2.2.2 Froyo(unofficial) the first day. Also, its dev team here @ xda is really working to bring latest updates to our device
I am a photographer and i would say the camera on my phone is perfectly acceptable for such a tiny sensor (pixel count has zero impact on image quality)
yeah, image quality depends on what type of lens you get (green - high compression, red - low compression, hence better quality, but the files are bigger). other than that, there's only one thing that bugs me, and it's the only two-finger multitouch support, but that was a problem only when i play tap tap revenge otherwise it's a great phone, best one in it's price range, and widely supported (many custom roms, easy to flash). so yeah, it's totally worth it!
Photo quality isn't too bad for cell phone

would any moderator be kind and close/trash this topic.... It's irrelevant now
thanks
The Desire HD is a must have phone, especially for the its current price on the market! Battery isnt fantastic but custom ROMs fix that and if you're not too much of a tech junkie where you have a must have need for all the latest tech, then I'd definitely suggest the DHD!
To be honest I've had my DHD since it's release and it has proved to be reliable, stable & just plain brilliant! Battery on stock ROM's are a mixed bag but easily fixed by flashing a new ROM (don't go for Sense unless you like pretty stuff, it uses fair chunk of battery 'cause of the animations), camera is decent (although lack of front facing camera can be dissapointing at times), screen is, again, brilliant (AMOLED & LED are just gimmicks to be honest), speaker is a little tinny (only REAL dissapointment on the whole phone).

That looks like a decent run. Near water too, so I assume less traffic fumes. What's the reason you use the GPS when running? (Speed, time?) The line is a little jagged. We didn't want to say, but you do kind of wobble when you run.
Maybe the water or buildings somehow throw the GPS off.
Back on topic: If a Desire HD is a decent step-up from your current phone and the price is much lower than 18 months ago, then there's no reason to shy away from getting one, in my opinion. I still value mine.
