I want SUPER AMOLED and 4" screen!!!!!
I guess, I will use HTC Desire for a while ... I cannot keep waiting and waiting for new device!
From Engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/samsung-announces-galaxy-s-android-smartphone/

Would pick HTC over Samsung anyday..
Really is a shame - from seeing the pictures.. They're essentially copying the iPhone UI - with a little bit of Sense aswell..
Can't see myself wanting this at all - only when HTC release the Supersonic will i want something more than the HTC Desire.

Samsung also wants to get sued by Apple.
Seriously though, there are just so many ways to make a sensible user interface. I agree that the bottom four icons look strangely familiarly places, but they are probably exchangeable. Which the icons on iPhone are not, if I'm not mistaking?

Nah I want desire more then this one. I hate the touchwiz interfaces from samsung they never were good in my opinion. Also I really don''t like the look of most samsung devices. They look a bit cheap to me.

If u live in the US then cancel your order now!! Not because of the Samsung phone, but because of this!
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/htc-evo-4g-is-sprints-android-powered-knight-in-superphone-armo/

like the HD2 4.3" is too big for a phone

Yeah it might look shiny and nice, but don't be fooled.. ;?D
Here's some reason I don't like it:
1. It's a Samsung. They have many great products in many categories, but phones? Nah.. "My" experience with samsung phones (Haven't own one, but friends and family have..) is that you shouldn't expect the best build quality and even if the UI has its pros, the cons will nag you.. Forever! ;?P
2. I think the UI looks a lot (a lot!) like the UI on the IPhone (They must have looked once or twice on the IPhone) with some "extra quirks". And frankly that isn't a good thing.
( - We need a new ui for our Android-phone. - HTC sense is sooo done! - Oh, I know!! Lets copy the [ridiculously] popular IPhone, that should be a good selling point..)
Aim for the Evo 4g instead (or settle with the Desire ;?D )

Just for fun.. tweetphoto.com/15554598

Um...maybe if the handset was GSM. It is going to a CDMA carrier (Sprint). Hate to say it, but I think I will just wait it out for the Desire.
Here is a comparison of the 2
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/htc-evo-4g-vs-hd2-and-desire-fight/

The HTC Evo 4G is a beast of a device, but if you're not on sprint there's no point.
Also keep in mind that the Desire has more RAM (576 vs 512) and an AMOLED screen.
The Samsung is a sad excuse for a superphone, that filthy skin makes it look like a dumbphone OS. Not to mention you won't have the strong community support that HTC devices do.

Got to admit that the UI and even the one button in the middle of the phone looks awfully familiar. Can anyone say...iPhone

the icons were the 1st thing reminding me of the iphone

Galaxy S is a just another example of a great hardware ruined with the crap Samsung customization. I really like the huge Super AMOLED screen (actually it is amazing) + 1GHz CPU, but this pitiful copy of the iPhone's UI is simply disgusting, especially when the stock Android is excellent on itself. They simply shouldn't touch it.
And in addition, I still remember how Samsung abandoned their i7500 customers with refusing to release future OS updates for this handset. Personally, I'm going to stay away from Samsung's phones in the future.

After a long night and good sleep, I made up my mind
I will keep HTC Desire Because I cannot stand the Samsung Galaxy S iPhoneness look.
And I have a strong feeling that HTC is keeping a secret superphone with better specs.
Probably: 1.5GHz Snapdragon, 4+" AMOLED screen, 1080p HD recording, TV-out
Why? Because in June, there will be iPhone 4G announcement.
And HTC will use that secret superphone to out-done iPhone 4G.
At least, I will do that if I am HTC, I must have a strategy to stay on top. They don't need to rush another superphone, they have already quite some superphones ... our beloved HTC Desire. If this happen, it would be another 1 year to replace HTC Desire ... not bad eh? Now I am happy.
HTC Evo? Nah, CDMA is useless in Europe, at least in my country.

Agree with the first post.
Much talk about getting the next and the next and the next phone.
Even if you say:
"-Ill go for the new samsung" or whatever, there will always be
a new phone in the pipe-line with a better spec.
You'll be dead before even getting a phone that way.
Desire is a super nice phone.
Right size, and right look if you ask me.

Desire on AT&T sometime? Please?

I'm in love with the Desire, does anyone have any news in this regard? I've googled a lot and there are random rumours.. Even rumours at this point will keep me happy.
Note: Yes, I know, the N1 will work on AT&T. Now we have that out of the way.
Hate to burst your bubble, but I don't think it is coming. US Cellular is getting it, however they are CDMA carrier. As far as AT&T goes...they might be getting the HTC Legend. It just passed through the FCC with bands capable of catching AT&T 3G.
This has been discussed on HoFo. It sucks...but IMHO AT&T is focusing all of their attention on the iPhone coming out in the next few weeks.
One thing to note is that the Samsung Galaxy S is rumored to be released on all 4 carriers and unlocked just like the Nexus One
You could always import a Telstra Desire since they work on the same bands, if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, AT&T wouldn't want to interfere with the jobsPhone.. meh... I've been reading around some of the rumours, one called Wildfire looks a bit like an Incredible with a hardware keyboard, I'd be okay with that one.. I like having a keyboard.
But this Dell Aero and Backflip.. Meh.

I forgot about the Telstra Desire, but I really do not think dishing out $800 just to get 3G is worth it. To each their own...we all have our limits

Yeah, I'd definitely get the N1 over the Desire if I had to import.. I don't have anything against the N1, but in some regards the Desire has bumped specs and I'll admit; I really like Sense.
But then again, it'll probably be like me using Windows Mobile's Today screen on my Tilt 2.. I'll get tired of the flashy stuff fairly fast and want simple and fast. Although I've used Sense on my Tilt 2 and XDAndroid and while it's quite slow, it's very nice.. Although I did see someone say they were using a Desire Sense on their N1, so probably not difficult to get it on there if I went that route.

You could flash it onto the NX-1. I haven't been keeping up with Paul's progress on his "project" but...bluetooth for me is crucial. I really do not like the stock Android UI, so the Desire and Sense UI was a major factor for me buying it.
AT&T EDGE where I live is super fast so browsing speed really isn't that bad as some people think. I toggled between 3G and EDGE on my iphone 3G for a couple of days and could easily see the excessive battery drainage

erm.. EDGE = 10k/sec give or take... 3G = 700k/sec (average for me here), faster/slower in other places I'm sure
Yes, less power used on EDGE in almost all cases, even those of it taking less time, but very much worth it IMO.. My last few phones have been 3G and while I've tinkered with disabling it here and there to save power it's hardly ever worth it for the speed and losing data on voice calls.
I'm staring at the Google Nexus One payment page.. Sigh. I really want the Desire.
BTW, I see what you say about the Desire ROM on Nexus... I've flashed a few ROMs but that looks scary.. Hmmffffffffffff..
Well I wouldn't say it is scary, but you might face the usual problems like certain features missing or not working or the freeze-ups and need for reboots. Either way, I would just hold out for a little longer. The NX-1 came out in January, meaning that HTC will probably be working on a new, more powerful phone to release soon.
The Evo and Incredible should be available soon. Both the Nexus and Desire are already available so in a few months...say Q2-Q3...we will probably be seeing HTC drop new phones that are GSM ready.
Bleh, don't search ATT Desire on Twitter, lots of people saying they're sure it's coming.. Makes me twitchy.

I won a WP7 phone!!!

Sadly, I won't get it til general availablity and I don't know which phone. Microsoft peeps are still being cagey with it. The guy wouldn't even let me take a pic of a LG WP7 device even though it's been all over the internet already. The only real new info I've gleaned is that they will support basic exchange policies like pin unlock and remote wipe. Still going to try and fenagle some more info out of them.
WTH? Congratulations!!
cool can i have it?
Congrats!.........
Depending on what they say, I might just get a HD2. The WP7 device is supposed to be general availability and they might make devices available before then and I'm not willing to wait.
niceeee
thats lucky and awesome!
Remember to colaborate with XDA and help WP7 become more awesome .

After having seen it in person, the whole OS is rather impressive. While it may not on paper be the #1 phone OS, it is rather good and will put up a good fight. Oh and they've only shown off around 70% of the OS's features. More positive info will come to light as we near launch.

I think I've always been relatively positive about the new OS. While some of the new restrictions are annoyingly restrictive, I don't think it'll be a problem for us. In one of the sessions today they showed off how devs will be able to unlock phones and it was just a desktop app that talks to the store. I can easily see this app being modified to just not talk to the store but I'm betting there will need to be more done than this. So while I still wish MS would open up the dev platform more, I somewhat respect the decisions they've made and I don't think it will be hard for the rest of us to have phones we can do as we wish with.
It was stated earlier in the week by one of the members of the WP7 team that only 70-80% of the OS had been shown off up to this point. However, after going hands on with a device for a while today, I didn't find much that we haven't seen yet. The whole thing is fluid and is super intuitive. It really is a joy to use. So I'm not sure how much is left to unveil but it seems rather useable today. But none of the WP7 guys that I talked to are using it full time yet so that's kind of telling.
nice... congrats... HD2 is still better looking then any of the WP7 phones we've seen... the only one that beats it is the prototype images of HD3 made in photoshop lol... dell lightening comes close, but hw keyboard kills it as well... just get the HD2, then u'll have to option of running 6.5 or android (90% possible so far) and prolly even wp7 when it comes out since it conforms to all specs ...
Pics or it didn't happen!
Jeeze. Necro thread!
I ended up deciding to wait for a WP7 device. The HD2 they had was a european model and couldn't do 3G here. A smartphone without 3G is useless. So I wait til October like everyone else. But at least it will be free.

Not all the specs, AFAIK the chipsets in the HD2 do not conform to all the hardware specs that Microsoft has made for Windows Phone 7 compatibility. Things like the hardware image scaler for example are not present in the HD2, nor is support for hardware acceleration of the VC-1 codec.

Tired of people who have no idea what they're talking about being publicized?

I mean really, that product of incest Dvorak who has been proven wrong time and time again is out to get another OS. I mean as many times as he's been wrong you could call it a good omen that he thinks WP7 will fail. You know, just like the iphone did? Not to mention the fact that none of these people are WP7 users and yet they feel obligated to argue the facts. None of them seem to know much about the phone other than "Ooh, it's a smooth UI." or *shudder* "It's just an iphone ripoff." It's a shame that they can't put real WP7 users on these radio shows to really talk about the benefits of the OS and because of that all people hear is the negatives. WP7 is the Cinderella OS as queer as that may sound. It's two ugly competitors that have lost any real drive because they're already swimming in cash and anything else is just excess. Then there's the OS that has more to offer, looks better, and is just waiting for it's time to shine. As someone who was just a few months ago an android fanboy the best change I've made recently was to a new phone OS. WP7 is just amazing and sadly unrecognised.

Samsung put a terribly slow interface over an already laggy OS causing extreme slowdowns. Not to mention the T-mobile variation feels unbelievably cheap. Sure with a number of fixes you can make it run remotely decent but even after all that it's not too great a device.

TouchWiz is generally not a bad idea, just too iOS... the notification toggles are good designs.
I agree that the launcher was bad, I always replace it.
Galaxy S is a great device on hardware, Hummingbird, quadband WCDMA, best NAND, BlueTooth3.0, decent GPS chip (however functioning terrible)... Also the international version i9000 do have timely updates.
On late version TW performs better.
So I would blame US carriers for destorying the performance of GS. I've been running i9000 ROMs on my Captivate for months and never went back to i897ROMs. Well, my SIM is in my Focus now

Once you've gone WP7 having to flash roms and stuff just to make your device functional is rather tedious and boring. The captivate while my wife had it did run smoother than the Vibrant but still nowhere near a WP7 device. I still found my G1 running 2.1 runs faster than anything using touchwiz. and thats almost depressing. I don't see why carriers are blamed.

For GS, just dont use the TW launcher, that's really laggy.
ROMs of US variants update much much slower than other parts of the world. The latest official AT&T Captivate ROM is still on 2.1, while the Canadian Captivate is on 2.2 and Chinese version has official 2.2.1 (Significant bug-fix to 2.2) running. If it's not AT&T, who should be responsible for the difference?

The consumers. The Vibrant was updated not because ours was the most sold (T-mobile is like the bottom of the big 4 and has a vibrant 2 coming out soon) but because we griped and complained and rode T-mobile/Samsung enough. I hate to say it but a number of people who got the captivate were previous iphoners which for the most part are not very bright (Not being mean just a fact) They don't care what version of what they have as long as they can play angry birds and text. I think it's heavily on the consumers.

PS - In the long version he turns it on, and another guy comes out and demoes it.

ALTHOUGH I do like the boxiness aspect. I think rounded edges are old school, boxiness is a good thing design-wise.

Or, you could say that rounded phones are a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Pulling a square-edged, boxy phone out of my pocket can be a real pain, but a phone that has nice rounded corners is not a problem at all.
And personally, boxy = ugly to me.

Since they are on-screen buttons, they can be minimized or disappear altogether during a game or open app. This would completely eliminate the accidental press of these buttons.

When will we recieve a Desire Z replacement?

Year in and year out, we desperately wait for the Desire Z to be replaced by something better (we don't care if its from HTC, Samsung, etc).
When will be the time?
Personally, and based on what we see with the Moto X, it will be the Motorola Droid 5. Yes, I know the Droid 4 was a piece of **** for XDA but now that it is Google's company....Maybe we will see a change with the Moto X and Google's involvement.
No thoughts on this?
I personaly kinda gave up the hope for a better qwerty smartphone
In my opinion from specs the mytouch 4g slide was one of the best with h/w keyboard, but from buildquality no phone reaches the DZ
And the developement for the mytouch is, well, not dead, but very little (guess there are 3 ppl who can port and 1 or 2 who really can build a ROM, yet no one who can port/build sense ROMs :/ )

A QWERTY brother of the HTC One would absolutely be the best. The chances of such a thing: nil.

Yea, I'd love to see a QWERTY keyboarded version of an HTC One - however I seem to remember reading somewhere that HTC has tossed in the towel on QWERTY keyboard phones...
Yah, Still going strong with DZ, And i wouldn't want HTC one with qwerty, unless it also gets removable battery and a memorycard slot. Right now the only upcoming and current phones I'm interested in is the Jolla, and maybe Adaia. Then there is ubuntu edge, that's not going to happen imo.
But Adaia is probably going to be too much on the expensive, in the woods type of a phone with hot swappable batteries, and satellite phone capabilities, running android. And no idea if there will be a hw qwerty.
Really interested in Jolla and Sailfish tough, with better multitasking, since on android only some apps have it. (you can't leave youtube video running in the background when checking mail or something) Also was hoping for a "the other half" with an slide out qwerty, but since looks like the back is only using nfc, and doesn't have a physical connector, it would have to be nfc qwerty with its own battery.
Then there is Samsung note series, my dad got a note 2. It's pretty big, but the stylus is great, somewhat interested in a phone with proper stylus. But i dont like the front button layout on the galaxy line, why mix capacitive and a physical button, its just, eeew.
Also read about a new samsung android FLIP phone with hw dumbphone keypad, and dual screens, could be good. Even Apple added dumbphone on screen keypad on the latest iOS, since turns out lot of ppl prefer it, and can type faster on it, than a qwerty.
Pics of this just popped up on engadget: http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/04/samsung-galaxy-folder-live-photos/
Anyway for now, Jolla is my number one choice for my next phone. Definately if they come up with a qwerty back cover for it.
It would be amazing if someone made a phone comparable to the G2. But I have a feeling no one is going to release a high quality QWERTY phone ever again as there is so little demand (except for us!), such a shame.
Giving up the ghost next month and going with the S3 and buying a sliding keyboard case as an attachment.

Probably the best we can do for now!

I imported a Galaxy S Relay 4G from U.S.
Snappy 4-row QWERTY keyboard, Jelly Bean, 1.4 GHz dual-core Snapdragon. Only letdowns are the WVGA pentile display and 5 megapixel camera which are definitely not high-end.
Compatible with GSM networks after unlocking and has fairly stable CM10.1 port if you absolutely hate TouchWiz. Here's video review to see the phone in action.

Wow that is cool, this would be the replacement option when my DZ dies. Do you know if there's a QWERTZ version?
Cheers, Ralf

Although it's rather fat. Maybe a phone plus an external keyboard when travelling would be better?
Just thinking. Cheers Ralf
Samsung is coming out with a flip phone. Try that
Well, some pictures of a Droid 5 just leaked. Now with Google in control, we can HOPE the bootloader is not as locked down as the Droid 4 and some good ROM work can come to it.
HTC One is Only HTC I liked after DZ. I think it will be my next phone
The new droid with the keyboard looks good, but we would need it to be GSM, and Verizon is CDMA. Hopefully Motorola will make a GSM version.

It wouldnt make sense to release a CDMA only version. The development and production costs would outweigh their gainings.
I am troubled though about both a europe and a US version. Did the Droid 4 get released in europe?
