Defy worth getting? - Defy General

My mum currently has the Vodafone 845 which has a severely cracked screen. I've been looking around and the best phone I can see for what she is willing to pay is the Defy. I will be buying this from a parallel import store as it's ~$450 nzd vs $800 nzd from a normal retail store. What I want to know is whether or not it's worth getting a Defy now that the offical 2.2 Froyo rom has been released. I have flashed custom roms on my i9000 but not sure how difficult it would be to flash a custom rom on the Defy.
Any opinions would be much appreciated.

This isnt much of an answer but i love mine, some people say they are laggy but they must not have used a ZTE Blade, i could rip my hair out when i use my Blade.

get it ,you will not regret

The defy's hardware is great, but I personally don't really like the MOTOBLUR software. That's no big deal, since you can flash various custom ROMs. So I'd say the Defy is totally worth getting.

According to the GSMArena review the browser doesn't support text reflow. is this true?

You should definitely get it. It is my first smartphone and managed to flash ROM easily. This forum helps a lot. Currently running (and not lagging) CM7 by Quarx.
Don't waste your time, go for it!

Easy. You can change your browser. I use Opera, but there's a lot more out there.

I hope you are aware of the Camera quality which isn't as good as a 5MP cam should be. Its pretty much useless in low light. Apart from this, Defy rocks!
It's awesome VFM and durable cell.

Easy! you'll find lots of guides and tutorials, it was my first android cell and I was able to update to 2.2.2 Froyo(unofficial) the first day. Also, its dev team here @ xda is really working to bring latest updates to our device

I am a photographer and i would say the camera on my phone is perfectly acceptable for such a tiny sensor (pixel count has zero impact on image quality)

yeah, image quality depends on what type of lens you get (green - high compression, red - low compression, hence better quality, but the files are bigger). other than that, there's only one thing that bugs me, and it's the only two-finger multitouch support, but that was a problem only when i play tap tap revenge otherwise it's a great phone, best one in it's price range, and widely supported (many custom roms, easy to flash). so yeah, it's totally worth it!

Photo quality isn't too bad for cell phone

Yes, camera's quality is not bad at all, i think this is the best phone with performance/price
Sorry for my bad english

wow, great pictures btw, what rom do you have on your DEFY? i don't think that my one takes such great pics!

Just good lighting, steady hand, and select the mode manually. Shooting close objects with Macro mode seems to have best quality.

Excellent camera work there.

Love my defy, just get it

defy is simply awesome. I love everything about it! Totally worth getting it! In day light the camera works perfectly fine!!
I love my DEFY!

Hello, new GN user!

Just wanted to hop in and say hi. Hope I made the right choice while at the Verizon store. I was so tempted for the Razr MAXX, but I used their iPads in store to check the xda section for it and saw that dev was kinda "meh", lol. So motorola, if you're reading this, you lost a sale because of it!!
Coming from a Samsung Infuse which I loved to death, but development for it died... and fast. If dev got more popular for it I know for a fact it would've been one of the best phones on the market.
One thing I miss dearly though, that camera. I took some sample shots. I resized because of the forum, also because one was 8MP and the other 5MP, but you can see the difference:

Hopefully all goes well with my experience with this phone. So far it's amazed me, other than the camera everything is pretty great, but I need to use it for a while before I make a final judgement.

I went from webOS to nexus as well, its great esp when the calendar works like amazing
I know what you mean about the camera. Unless the lighting is perfect, the Nexus camera has lots of "noise".
I've taken some great, clear shots with my Nexus, but often I take pictures and im like wtf why is it so grainy?
I'm also coming from a Samsung Infuse and agree about the 3 less MP for the camera. Absolutley love the GNex though! Congrats on the new purchase
Welcome to the club. i switched to the rezound because i was so frustrated with the camera. i switched back 2 weeks later.
im using "Camera fx" its an app that slows down the shutter speed so you can be still.
it seems to help.

Camera Quality??

When I got the phone I new it had mixed reviews on the camera. I was experiancing the same, focus was horrible ( about every 4th pic would turn out ), had strange coloring and just crap pictures all around Was hesitant about OTA mandatory update because was not rooted, but found others saying did'nt affect ability to root so I took the update. After I was playing with the camera again and found it to be taking great photos (inside in a very dark room with a desk light ). Can't wait till tomorrow when I can test outdoors...Has anyone else had the same experiance? The update discriptiion didn't say anything about fixing camera issues but it sure seems to have for me...time will tell :fingers-crossed:
Just got Camera Zoom FX after reading somewhere that it improves the quality. It's night as I type this so I can't really test it until tomorrow. Long ago, I completely gave up taking pictures at night with a phone camera because it's a waste of my time. Even a flash I don't bother. Regardless, the G's photos aren't incredible, they aren't horrible, they're exactly what I expect from a lens the size of a couscous pellet.
Regarding the update, I didn't try the camera before that so I can't say. But I'm happy with the results, it's somewhat better than the POS camera in my old phone. Not a amazingly better but better enough. You get a decent selection of settings for a phone here - exposure, ISO, white balance - they can make a big difference in the end result.
If you have Photoshop you can improve camera photos somewhat. Been using PS since it came out, and I know that's expensive. Elements isn't, it can maximize your camera's potential. Depends on how serious you are with this stuff. I'm just some dope who loves to take photos with big cameras, small cameras, phone cameras and as long as I know what to expect with each, I'm OK with it.
Here's what I expierianced...

After Update with Flash
After without Flash
Also the focusing on low light situations seems to be much better.
Very interesting difference between the photos of the PC, stealth. Looks like a window in the background? The flash is obviously bouncing off it or something reflective near it in the first photo and screwing everything up, but you cannot detect it in the second (except in the monitor but it doesn't throw it off anywhere near like the first example).

Yes, and also I was in my bedroom that is blacked out and was even focusing and taking great pictures as to where before it would not even focus in a dimmly lit room.
Camera Focus
None of my pictures come out with good focus unless I'm taking a picture of something immediately in front of me. I just got my phone so it did the jelly bean update before I could even use it. I don't want to buy a separate camera app unless I know it's going to work. Ideas?
I have noticed improvements with the camera with every update that comes. Originaly, like u, i was very disapointed with the 13mp. My htc evo 4g took better pictures. Now Much improved, i may still try the nexus 4 camera improvement hack. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2065799

GNex won the TIPA award.

Not sure if this has been posted, but our Galaxy Nexus sits on the same pantheon as the acclaimed Leica M9, Canon 1dx, 5d3 and Nikon d800 cameras.

For those non photography types, TIPA is a some sort of independent association form by various press entities to award great photographic products.

Strange since everyone complains about the camera.
I don't complain about the camera, bests my old Thunderbolt's 8MP shooter.

not me, im constantly trying to show people that its an awesome camera. people just dont know how to use it. they expect the camera to do all the work for them, but it only does what you tell it to do. plus its really important to keep that back lens cover smudge free.

As per the above poster, I also love the GNex camera. It takes some getting used to but it takes better pictures than pretty much any other camera on a phone I have ever seen.

Very nice pics. I personally don't have an opinion, my eyes are not the best, and I've never had a good eye for capturing photography myself. I just use the camera casually and it works fine for me. What I meant was the general consensus on the camera is that it is poor, that is what the websites and reviews and even users all complain about. It may just be a common misconception, but it's widely the accepted view, accurate or not.
Not better than my SGN. I am still pleased i didnt go for gnex and opted a note last year.

TIPA didn't evaluate image quality only, but the whole pack of good screen, zero-lag shutter, 1080p recording and some other goodies.
TIPA meeting was on 24th March 2012, so it's understandable why they choose Galaxy Nexus.
All I can say about the camera is, its the only camera that can take colour accurate images of my coral reef aquarium. I've tried several cameras and other phones and its way off. Mind you I've learned the best settings for that application is simply changing it to cloudy.

[Q] How usable is the rear camera ? (Upload your sample images/videos)

Hello,
i would like to know how usable you feel is the rear camera ?
Currently i do not own a Smartphone.
Would you say it is good enough for small task like a quick Youtube video or snapshots ?
Considering the small diameter of the sensor 5 Megapixel should be rather ideal.
Analysing the product pictures it appears to me that the sensor is even a little bit bigger compared to most of the Smartphones (I am not referring to the outer ring)
I would be delighted if you could upload sample images (Indoor, outdoor and low light) and videos (720p and 1080p).
A few words about the front camera would also be nice.
Thank you very much indeed!
Best regards,
pootney
Link to origami pic cuz its biiiig
Hello,
thank you for the upload!
Nice Origami :good:
Despite the fact that the room seems well lit there is noise all over the image.
Altogether the quality seems to be not satisfying but i did not really expect more from a Tablet.
Best regards,
pootney
yeah, it's nothing special at all...a simple 5mp camera, really. can't expect too much, but the video isn't really too bad.
Not very good, noisy even outside.

1. Thanks, its one of my hobbies
Spoiler
2. They're normally not up to par like a GS III, etc, cause 'most' people don't use it as a picture taking primary device. Additionally, a better camera would have drove the cost up more
Hello,
thank you guys :good: !
I would be glad if someone could upload a video recorded indoor in a well lit room.
Actually 720p is enough.
This would simulate nearly a trial to record a short Youtube Review for me.
Sometimes the video quality is definitely better than the image quality.
No hurry!
Also would you say that the quality of the front camera have improved compared to the old Nexus 7 ?
Would you describe it as good?
Unfortunately i am limited to 8 thanks per day
Your contributions are much appreciated :good:
Best regards,
pootney
I just wanted to bring up that my S3 took pretty awful pictures while using the stock software, but I installed CM and the pictures and videos I was taking turned out nicely. I'm sure that the same will hold true for the camera on this tablet. I'm especially excited for CM's 'Project Nemesis' in relation to his tablet.
download LGCAMERA from the play store, takes better pictures at full jpeg quality and the correct white levels. Also you can use LGCAMCORDER and set it to record 1080p 20mbps data rate video with 128bit AAC encode rate! at 30fps or higher
Hello,
i was also thinking maybe the camera could be tweaked.
@skyhawk21: Could you please upload the same scene once taken with the stock app an once with the LGCAMERA app ?
I am curios how much it improves.
That would be awesome :good: !
Also now people are starting to upload video samples on Youtube.
Here is a good one:
Best regards,

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Certainly not as good as iPhone or Pixel. But for a budget phone, this is hard to beat. Portrait mode doesn't always blur the correct areas. Auto mode definitely is noisy and when you zoom in, often a lot of definition is lost.
But despite this, this camera is much better than many other phones. You will not hate this camera. It may not be the best you ever use either though.

Pretty much on the dot... For it price, I don't think you will get any better. For the manual mode, I believe it will beat phone out of this price range as well.
I am having some ptoblems when i try to review photos by native camera App.
Many times the last picture comes above the previews one.

I'm really liking the phone - my only criticism would be that I find indoor pictures are too "warm" (yellow) but I suppose I'll need to learn how to play with manual mode for that. My previous phone handled indoors much better (Moto X Play, not known for its camera).

You can go into manual mode and adjust the white balance.
A camera with potential.
I love the camera in this phone.
Hardware wise it has same or in some cases greater abilities than galaxy s7 edge or iphone 7 plus.
The real problem I see here is software. It doesn't do justice with the hardware. Auto mode is rubbish.
But and the but is pretty BIG.
If you know your manual mode. You can do miracles with this phone.
(Remove space from link to access it.... I am not allowed to add outside links yet.... Sorry for that.)
And for the selfie camera and portrait images I would suggest you to use google camera port drive. google.com/open?id=1IEf-BZQdk_SH3WVG3aev05pdiRpVqW68
