As the title says, I have some questions about rooting and hacking an HTC Desire Z and also some application recommendations.
1) I used SuperOneClick to root an old Galaxy 551 Running Android 2.2.
Will the same thing work for an HTC Desire Z running 2.2? What about 2.3?
2) When I rooted my Galaxy 551, the wireless stopped working (started working after an unroot+restore)! Will there be any such risks if I root/hack/mod a Desire Z?
3) Is it possible to dual boot HTC Desire Z with Windows mobile 7 and Android 2.3? If so can someone point me to a howto (which is known to work for HTC Desire Z)! Also are there any risks (I'm not talking about recoverable bricks, but about something like wireless not working!) involved?
4) I saw a guide in the forum on running ubuntu within android!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=962023
It didn't work on Galaxy 551 (rooted and NOT custom romed)!
Is there any way to work ubuntu from a rooted Desire Z without installing a custom rom?
5) Last, I need recommendations for the following applications:
a) Media player (mkv,avi,rmvb supported)
b) Torrent
c) Comic book reader
d) Task manager (I really liked the one in Galaxy 551)
e) File Browser
f) Mobile TV (should be free, and should work decently from EDGE)
g) MMORPG/RPG (preferably with keybboard support)
h) Custom ROM (not exactly an app, but stil....)
At the moment I have vplayer & file expert.
And RPGs Zenonia, Dink, Pocket Legends, Star Legends, and Dungeon Defenders (any other good RPGs/MMOs?)
If I posted in the wrong forum, sorry.
I'm still kinda new to rooting, so some of my questions may be stupid (sorry for that too)!

1) best to follow the guide on the xda wiki for the htc vision. it is the guide i used and i rooted with no problem
2) there are risks to rooting but if you follow the exact steps you should be fine. also u should try changing radios on ur samsung galaxy if the wireless stops working
3) it is possible to dual boot but it would be very slow as the desire z dosent have sufficient enough memory
4) i dont know
5)
A) mobo player?
c) marvel comics app
d) autokiller memory optimizer
e) es file explorer or root explorer
g) ur opinion. zeonia is pretty good

Hello, I posted in another topic, but nobody gave me a reply..
So I am trying again...
The problem is that I really want to root my G2 because I want to use htc sense...
But I read that to root my phone, since it is a android 2.3.4, I have to downgrade it.
Is that right or we have a new way?
And if it is really necessary, The only method is that with the cmd? That is really complicated, but if is the only way I will read again the topic and make some questions...
please reply!
Thanks

1) Thanks I'll figure it out from there.
2) Like I asked risks or risks like bricking? (Cause bricking can be avoided if you do things right). And what do you mean 'changing radios'?
3) Slow? Two OSes running NON simultaneously will be slow?
4) Still waiting for it!
5) Thanks a lot. Although for task manager, I kinda want something that does NOT autokill .

2) well there is always a change you will get bricked. i cannot tell if your phone will be bricked or not. also radios are how your phone is connected to cell towers. there are diffrent radios for diffrent parts of the world.
3) it would be slow because even though only one os is running at a time, there is still an amout of ram that is specifically alocated for the other os.
5) the advanced taskmanager can be set not to auto kill.
Watchdog is a great task manager. Lite version does the job for me.

2) So it was not caused by rooting? (It was wierd that rooting could cause Wifi of all things to stop working!) Anyways, I have no idea how to change radios, and like I said, after unrooting and resetting it started working again!
3) Too bad, I really wanted to try it! I guess it will be impossible to set it to allocate ram during boot like a PC or something!
Edit: Also, how do you update to 2.3 anyway? I can't find an update option in HTC Sync or anywhere in the phone!
Another Edit: NVM, got the answer!

1) No super one click. Gonna have to follow the guide in the DZ/G2 wiki, downgrade, root, and flash a custom ROM (or pre-rooted OTA build).
2) There are risks in rooting any device. If you follow the proper guide to root and take your time (don't be stupid!) there are no known issues or regular problems that people have faced with rooting this device.
3) No.
4) That's a serious hack to get it running. Some people are getting it to kinda work.
5) Recommendations
a) I use Google Music for music. RockPlayer works pretty well for other media (admittedly I don't watch that much video on my phone).
b) There are a few out there, but why would you want to torrent on your phone?
c) don't read comics. sorry.
d) DONT use a task killer. If you must use an app to watch tasks, use something like WatchDog to monitor for tasks running wild, but never kills anything unless you say so, and doesn't suck memory.
e) I use the built-in file browser in CM7. I also use File Expert as a good root explorer.
f) Mobile TV? on EDGE? Good luck.
g) Dungeon Defenders is a cool MMORPG apparently. I've dabbled in it a little its pretty fun
h) I LOVE my CM7 nightlies. Very stable and solid.

You will have to downgrade to 2.2, root, and flash a custom ROM (there are many custom HTC Sense ROMs in the dev section).
The guides are pretty comprehensive. Do your research before starting, and ask questions about specific parts you have troubles with.

while sense looks pretty, cm7 nightlies are the cutting edge in features. ive tried to like other roms but always end up going back to cm. unrivaled stability and performance imo.

About following wiki, just like hacking a PSP or like rooting my previous android, what I always do or try to
About being scared of command prompt, the whole point of me trying to root it is to get a proper command prompt with all linux functions (instead of an emulator which just has cd ls and some basic commands)!
Edit: I need to root the phone/not necessarily mod it!
Also, which is the best mobile tv of the lot? (If it won't work with EDGE, I can still use with Wifi)

id still recommend rooting with the wiki, id also recommend cm7 still as well, but if you just want to be rooted on stock, follow the wiki then flash the stock pre rooted rom in the dev section. id also put eng hboot as well because with it and cwm recovery you can pretty much rest assured your device will always be recoverable.
cant comment on mobile tv as i never use it. i heard crackle is a halfway decent free mobile movie app tho..

sorry if this a noobish question, but is there a chance of PSFreedom being ported to the desire HD in the same way it was for the desire?
Moved to General.

Bump! is anyone working on this?
Is it really worth jailbreaking your PS3? You lose multiplayer functionality which is a major drawback.
am interested in knowing about this as well....since its just a different payload, and needs a rooted android, don't see it really hard to get it working on DHD.
i am very intersted in it too, have a read here:
http://psx-scene.com/forums/f118/psn-htc-desire-70477/

With psfMod, you need to have a special payload that allows PSN and patched gaming. I too got a desire, but i cant find the payload!
If you don't ahve psfMod, then you need to do the following:
1) Enable S-OFF [AlphaRev] Public release S-OFF HTC Desire GSM - xda-developers
2) Download psfmod recovery psfMOD :: Bravo
3) once downloaded, boot into fastboot (with the 3 androids on skateboards), make sure you're in fastboot (first option on the first screen) and plug in a USB.
4) go to the AndroidSDK/Tools folder, and run the following command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery [location of the .img file]

unfortunately the psfmod desire instructions dont work, we need a new image that will work with the dhd, as the current desire image just loads upto the htc logo

I rarely go online with my PS3 anyway and if I wish to I can always just update my PS3 firmware
I talked to klutsh he created already a lot of PSFreedom recoverys.
The only thing he needs is a source / vendor tree from the recovery image.
Paul created a normal recovery so you could also ask him if he release his vendor tree or at least to klutsh:
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...2-r2-clockworkmod-recovery-for-htc-desire-hd/
Does anyone have any updates for this ? I would really like to be able to run PSFreedom from my DHD
Is this what we are looking for http://www.klutsh.com/2010/12/06/psfmod-for-htc-desire-hd/ ?
I've read here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=772795 that we do need a particular (custom) ROM to make all this work and that the original one with Sense makes this infeasible. I don't know anyway if this can be applied to us, because it speaks about the 'normal' Desire and says Htc hasn't yet released a source code of the ROM, while I know Htc released the source of the base kernel of the DHD (well, that's not the Sense stuff, I know).
So, could someone give some hint? I absolutely don't want to wipe out my dhd for this, that would be only a 'let's see what I can do with an hacked ps3', nothing else...
wow, thanks ErMeglio, that's exactly what I was looking for!
I slowly am understanding how all this works...just did the whole stuff (rooted, flashed recovery, run it, flashed the ps3) and it WORKS.
PsFreedom worked but I had errors when opening the two new options. How are them supposed to work?
In the maintime I just wrongly sent my ps3 to a so-called "factory/service mode" (=useless!!) with the dhd and I am working to let it out of it....seems I need a LV2Diag.self file and I'm grabbing one
Edit
Just gone out from factory mode!
Check if your blu ray movie playback still works, there's reports of the service mode disabling it.

Hey everyone,
I am a super noob....wondering a few things....
1. Is it possible to root my evo without a PC? I do not own one and my phone is my only source of internet.
2. If so how? And is their any detailed how to's for such a thing...step by step.....possibly even noob proof
3. Assuming I can and I get it rooted what would you recommend next? I can maybe use someones comp from work so this question is essential
Sorry if this has been posted before, but forums can be such a chore when on a mobile
Look forward to your help and incite....cptcave

Hmmm....as far as I know you would need a computer to root fje phone, I haven't seen a way to do it without it. Of course I could be wrong here.
If you could borrow a friends computer you should be fine. Just search the forum and you'll find some great threads on how to root. I did mine after it first came out so im not too familiar with the newer simpler versions on how to do it.
Hope this was of some help.

Yes,J asonK75 is right. As far as I know, you do need a computer to fully root & unlock Nand.
Loads of threads for step by step instructions.
The advantages of rooting are basically that you can install certail apps (Wifi tether, Titanium Backup) which require root access to work. Furthermore, rooting gives you ability to install custom roms and theme your phone.
Hope this answeres all your questions.
Agreed. I could not imagine being on the stock Sense ROM anymore. I love CM ROMs and I like the fact that I can try others like MIUI and Liquid too. Themes are worth it right there, not to mention custom kernals and different transitions. Plus we might have GB before the official release of it!

Hey guys,
Firstly, sorry if I'm not using the correct terminology because I'm still quite unfamiliar with it.
Anyway, I just got my Desire Z about a week ago and am planning to root it so that I can access paid apps via Market Enabler.
I've read through all the guides on how to root and seems simple enough. However, I have a few questions regarding the default HTC applications.
1: Will I be able to continue using and updating the HTC apps (like HTC Locations, HTC Camera or HTC Car Dock) that came along with it after rooting?
2: Is is possible to keep the default SenseUI after rooting instead of getting a custom ROM that looks like SenseUI?
3: Will my phone stop working with htcsense.com after rooting?
4: Will I require a custom ROM installed into it after rooting, or can I just reuse the same default HTC ROM?
Basically, I love my phone and don't want to change anything except getting to access paid apps from Android Market. To do so, I would need to have Market Enabler working, which needs me to have Superuser permissions. Hence, why I need to root it.
Thanks!

Rooting is just rooting; nothing will change other than your ability to do whatever you want to/with your device. Just rooting won't change anything other than your ability to install apps which require root access.

Hello i am Jamie from Holland and i'm new at this forum
A lot o questions i already found on this forum but i have still 2 i can't find. I don't know much about phone's so i hope my questions are not stupid
I have a htc desire with original android 2.2.2 with warrenty, so i DON'T want to root my phone. (or a possebility to update my phone without root or losing apps?)
at first:
Is there a new theme for my phone like android 3 or 4?
seccond:
I want to control my phone from my pc (to use whatsapp also on my pc), i found a lots of programs but they are all for ROOTED phones.
Thanks,
up,...................
You can use an ICS Launcher.
https://market.android.com/details?...sMSwxLDEsIm1vYmkuU3luZGljYXRlQXBwcy5JQ1N2MiJd
Rooting is not risky or anything, just plug you phone in your pc and use unrevoked. Finished in a minute or so and then it's rooted.. But if you don't feel good about it, don't
thanks, i downloaded the unrevoked program, before i root is there a posibitety to backup my phone rom? And if i root, do i loss my warrenty?
and he program said, make shure you DONT have installed htc sync, do the mean on my pc or phone? and can i use it after it is rooted again?
thanks
btw can i also flash my rom with this program?
Read guides before you do anything, they are all over the forums just search.
Also before you do anything write down your software/radio version so you can download appropriate RUU in case you need go back to factory default ROM.
You'll also need to know how to partition SD card. (most ROMs requires it)

i installed the theme app but now i cant put my old htc sense widgets on my desktop. is there a posibillety to have my old sense widgets? (i looked onb the market but the fake ones aren't so nice as the original)
Not the exact same ones, no.
There are some replicas on the market, especially for the 4x2 clock/weather there is a great replica that looks exactly like the real thing.
Hi Experts of the forum.
I have a HTC Desire Z with android 2.3.3 and Sense 2.1
Currently I am having some problem with the reloading of the home screen almost everytime i go into a full page app and exit.
It is quite irritating.
I was told that this is caused by Sense.
But anyway i was wondering if it is possible to root the phone now and upgrade to the new ICS version as well as the latest Sense that HTC provides.
As much as i hate the reloading problem that sense is causing, i still like their UI, and their new UI as well, and i hate it that HTC is not going to upgrade it for Desire Z.
Anyone can advise on how to upgrade by root or something.
I can't seem to find a way to root or upgrade.
BTW, i read somewhere after rooting we can also overclock the phone, but is it a good idea to do so, will it cause any problem and will it like kill the battery life very fast?
Please help.
Thanks.
Not at a computer so I don't have the links handy. Check the thread in development on rooting
Only folow the wiki ie don't use visionary and don't simple try the htc hboot unlock.
Once you have the right link to downgrade, root and flash custom recovery you can install lots of roms
Some better than others but you will easily find one better than your stock rom, even if you love the sense ui
You can find many super fast sense roms with many nice extras added.
And yes overclocking is plenty safe so long as you don't attempt something crazy like 2ghz but even if you did
The chance of perment damange is low. As far as battery life many custom roms may increase your battery life
Over a stock rom even with overclocking. I am a heavy user and tend to get close to 24hrs on most roms between
Charges, and this is with slight overclocking (1-1.5 depending on current rom and such)
Good luck and if you have any issues use the search option first ask question if your still confused
There is a great community on xda ready to help

Yes, it will. You can easily reinstall the apps, but the problem is the app data. If you are rooted then you can use a tool like Titanium Backup to backup all the app data. But if you are on 2.3.3 and not currently rooted, that won't work for you, since you have to downgrade as part of the rooting process (thereby losing all your app data). It'll be fine going forward once you are rooted, but the problem is with your current data.
For stuff like SMS, there are various backup utilities on the Play Store where you can back those up without requiring root.
How much stuff do you have (in terms of app data) that is going to be a problem if you lost it ?
