who gets a thrill out of being a D*** to people? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just wanted to post because i see on most threads theres usually someone has to be a cheeky arrogant **** to someone that is simply asking for help and doesn't have much knowledge.
My understanding was you came here for help and support and to try and help others is it not? But yet, when people ask for help they often get slaughtered for various reasons such as: wrong section, repeated thread, not searching properly, using the wrong punctuation etc (the last one was exagerated a bit but it wouldnt surprise me)
Basically before i came here years ago I would not have even known what Root is/does, why you would flash different ROMs etc and i have learned everything thanks to XDA and the various genious' that make it all possible.
I just dont think its right the way some people THINK they can talk/treat others and it is certainly uncalled for.
For example when i first came here I had the Xperia X10 and was very interested in the work and came across a problem when flashing someones ROM but I didnt have enough posts to reply so had to start a thread in General asking for help and the response i got you think i had just launched a nuke and killed thousands.
I know i will probably get slaughtered for this but basically i think this is a problem that should be addressed and no one else will say anything about it so i will!
And one final thing i cant understand. What could possibly make you feel good about making a **** out of others??? If you are one of these people could you kindly do me a favour and go play chicken with an incoming 12 Gauge Round from point blank range. That is all

i know some.. i can name them too.. neh, they know themselves..

Yup, one of my pet hates when the more experienced members on sites (not just here) are rude to new members.
We all started out once, treat people the way you would like to be treated!
Now p*ss off......

Use Search, you'll save thousands (of posts).

You could've used search and save us from another thread talking about helpful people
It relieves stress being a **** to others online knowing you won't get shot for it afterwards. Words from a stranger can't hurt enough for it to be an actual problem can it? There are now two active similar threads on this issue.

When i first joined here, this is what people told me:
"If you need step by step instructions, you shouldnt be doing anathing to your phone"
"You double posted the samething"
"wth are you talking?re read the OP"
Im still am a NEWBIE,but atleast i got what i wanted. From time to time,if you ask correctly and make it seem innocent, you'll get your answer

Quoted for truth.
When I joined XDA I took a couple days and just searched for what I needed, learned as much as I could and THEN asked questions.
The problem here is many of the veteran users are tired of people coming in, and in their first ever post asking for something that if they literally did 5 minutes of searching would find.
As well if you are not technical or its hard for you to understand what you're doing and why, you should reconsider rooting your phone as there is nobody but this place to come help you fix it if you screw up. And while yes it is simple to do, its also easy to screw up.
So the vets see these people come in, ask (or sometimes demand) step by step instructions because they have no clue, and have proven they can't take 5 minutes to try and figure it out themselves. They are now jaded to it after it happens at least 4 or 5 times a week, so cut them some slack.
Answer me this. Would you go out, buy a Corvette, then decide you want to supercharge it so you go to the local corvette club meet. Walk in and say "which of you guys is gonna tell me exactly how to put this supercharger on my car, and I've never turned a wrench in my life." Seriously, what happens here is the digital equivalent.

I'm just being a di** to people who deserve it, who are idiots. When you trying to join this site, you need to watch a movie about the rules and sh*t. They guy CLEARLY says that you NEED TO USE THE F-IN SEARCH BUTTON before you post. Because you're NEVER the first one asking about something big. If people just could stop ignoring that ONE SIMPLE RULE! I would def stop being a d*ck to stupid a*s people.. Thanks..

+1. I find it much faster/easier using google to search xda than the actual xda search function.
I also did the same as Rogue Leader. I spent a few days scanning through alot of threads before posting and i found most of the answers i were looking for.
Everyone understands that newbs have to start somewhere (since i was a newb/still am lol when i got the xplay) but surely most people will have been on a fourm before? Or have used google to search before? No excuses really.
In the time it takes for someone to reply or after the flaming has stopped they could have easily found the answer they were looking for.

What you decide to do or not to do does not depend on others action or doing here on xda. You choose to be rude and a ****. How come you feel this resentment. You most have an anger problem and they are just easy targets for ventilating that agro. Who are you to judge others wheter they derserve a flaming or not. You clearly state your own level of knowledge in your own post and you can whine all day long and lay the responsebility on them for you being a ****. I'm gobsmacked over people like you, you take as little responsebility as the multi posters does. Learn how to behave or shut up and don't bloody answer nor look in those threads. Do yourself that favor.

Im with you there the XDA search is horrible. you could type in "how to root xperia play" and it could return "how to correctly use anal beads" lol
That being said i just google whatever i'm after followed by the key "XDA" at the end and im sorted

That one was definitely me... But, I am pretty sure I didn't have those mistakes in the original post.
That could have all been me But that definitely was a time when there was like 100 threads asking the same question and you decided to make a whole new thread even though there were several threads just below yours that had already been answered.
I am one of those people who actually will ask google before asking the internet for answers, and it has saved me a lot of flames.
ALSO, you posted the same thread twice, maybe three times and I fkn hate people who think they will get more attention by the continuous posting of the same question! Just like the 12 year old who has been posting multi-threads asking how to fix his wi-fi in all the forums.
TBH you still annoy me... Must be the "acting innocent" thing... Grinds my gears, bro.

This reminded me of Peter Griffin lol

I totally agree.
When I first joined here, I found the arrogance and rudeness of certain members truley awful.
Worse, people seemed to follow these 'respected' members like sheep.
It is like this most places on the internet, keyboard warriors are aplenty.
But even still...it still shocks and irks me the treatment I received here initially.
Since then I have found many nice, helpful and knowledgable people on these forums and have learnt to ignore the billy big shots.

Anal beads run Android? Man droid really does do "everything"!

But when you type in your "title" when you create a new thread, other threads with the same name pops up. So if you start typing like "How do i ROOT my xperia play?" I'll promise you that some threads about the exact same topic will pop up

if you want to use google search inside the xda forum, use this chain in google: "site:http://forum.xda-developers.com/" + the thing you want to search. For example:
site:http://forum.xda-developers.com/ rooting xperia play
Of course, this applies to any other website.

[Q] (Q) this question is for the smart android users

I have had about 5 android phones and I got the play(usa). When I got it there wasnt any root for it yet. As u know there is now. My issue is this, with every phone ive had I have never seen so many people willing to help someone root there phone. Untill i got This one. I dont need root but im one of them people who wants to cause I can. I have never bricked any phone ive used. I have altered every smartphone ive used. From winmo to the dare to android The point of these forums is to help one another. Not become rude and say screw you figure it out yourself. You all must remember not all of us are familiar with every aspect of every phone. Im not sure if most of u r so rude because u have no life but carma is a *****. To the dev helping and r willing to share what they know thank you you are and what should be what these forums are built for. Tho some are not able to pay for your time. I will be the one to say thank you without your effort we would not have what we have today. Again thank you. And to the rest take a look at the ass u have become.
You used the [Q] tag even though there was no question...and it's Karma, just saying. I agree though that some members on here are incredibly rude when they could be useful, but still, this thread didn't need the "Question" tag.
[Rant from a person who, in the measure of his possibilities, has contributed to all the developments going on here]
1) Learn to spell your own language, and some lessons on punctuation meanwhile. It is insulting to people who have English as a second or third language (a good share of the users, if not the majority) and have to spend years in cubicles learning English well enough to be understood when English-speaking natives don't even try to make themselves understandable.
2) It's exhausting to read loads of poorly written (and therefore hard to understand) questions about the same topic. It's more exhausting when they're all actually the same question, but the person who asks didn't actually care to search properly for his answer. Of course, he hasn't found an answer because he doesn't want to spend any effort in reading, summarising and extracting the proper lessons, and because in case that he reads and "does his homework", there's a good chance that what he finds is... a poorly written (and therefore hard to understand) question, which deters him from reading further.
3) I have a life. A life that is well spent when I can be helpful to others. When others don't want me to be helpful, and that shows when they don't bother to communicate their needs properly, my life is a bit unhappier. I want to help, so let me. Writing "im one of them people who wants to cause "I can" implies that you're hostile towards my help, or anyone else's. And when this kind of people are hostile, and it's clear that they're hostile towards you because they don't make the basic effort to communicate with you, there's a thin line between giving a grudging answer and sending them to hell.
4) Basic idea: you don't want to be helped, so help yourself. You don't want to read the threads that are already open and telling you all you want to know, so don't ask us to answer to your own thread. You're hostile towards others by not trying to communicate with them, and by expelling what is basically noise: expect hostility and more noise to come back to you. As you very well say, karma is a *****.
[/Rant from a person who, in the measure of his possibilities, has contributed to all the developments going on here]
i did not see the question :S
1. How do you know they don't even try to make themself understandable, you might choose a more suitable word, you 'assume' they don't. Some are better at things than others don't demean people for their spelling nor grammer. I will agree that one should retain from using txt/sms language in posts.
2. Yes this forum is already getting cluttered up with the same questions. If it annoyes you don't click on the thread. If you do then choose to help either way it's written. Point the OP to the other(s) thread(s) or even answer without hostility. You choose how to react.
3. They might be hostile and then you choose to react and choose to return it. If you want to help, then help either way and do it without remarks. What does it matter. If it makes you happier when helping then do it, choose to do it no matter the language, grammr and spelling, hell even the tone. Karma works both ways, what you give is what you recieve. So if I get it right one needs to meet your standrd of spelling and grammer to be helped, that just bs. Help is a gift to others and you don't give anybody anything to expect to get anything back then it's not a gift but a trade. Everybody has a life what has that got to do with it unless you imply that they wasting your time by posting unreadable posts, you choose to read.
4. I agree with you on this, if people won't spend the time on helping themself others won't help them. If they have a hostile tone they'll get that back. That's how karma works. You on the other hand always have a choise on how to react. It's always your choise, so what you give is up to you and not depending on what others might or might not post in a thread.
I understand your point of view on this matter and I'm not saying that meeting people with open arms is easy and not getting annoyed when the same person put up 2-3 threads with the same problem/issue. I react aswell and get annoyed and for a few secs I feel the urge to post a negative response, but I don't. I mean we're all human and have the same reaction. The thing is how you respond to them, how you meet the world on a daily basis
Regards Dousan...
Hope I make myself understandable
e: Karma is not a ***** it reflects what you do and how you act in life
The question (that was answered) is why are some people developing and using sony play so rude. I undetstand getting frustrated because of there ignorance. However, wouldnt it be just as easy to answer there question? More time and effort is spent being an ass that is needed. Nowhere in my article did I say I needed help. No I do not have a rooted phone. not because I cannot but because I myself am waiting for a Oneclick root. I use my phone as my internet. For a 150 mb program it takes about 4 hours to download. Ill wait.
For logseman, im glad it took you forever to read my post. Its less time you can spend being a **** to someone else. For not being able or " hard to understand" you sure was able to to reply with ease. If it means we english - speaking natives have to deal with people like yourself, ill pass. People like you are why the world is the way it is today. Try helping a little more. Next time you get the desire to be an ass while replying, try being helpful, even if the question has been answered. Yes they could be being lazy and not willing to help themselves. But rude reply is Just as lazy and unproductive.

Look I get that. I understand people are sick of the same questions. But directing them where it is or simply saying use search. Is better then some of the stuff I have read. Some ones reply was if you need step by step instructions im not helping you. Your a newbee and shouldn't be rooting. I dont know how to use every program available for android rooting but I can fallow directions. This is how I have rooted all of my smartphones.
If you don't understand why writing poorly and not bothering to state your problem clearly is a hostile act towards the people who potentially want to help you, I don't have anything more to say about this topic.
If I've been helpful to people in this forum, that's for them to decide. Ask Blagus, Mills, Ashergray, Yifanlu... Perhaps I wasn't of great assistance to them, but they will probably say that I've done what was in my reach to help. And perhaps 117 thanks in my counter, without me ever having developed anything, might mean that perhaps sometimes I may be making myself helpful.
I do not wish to argue further. By all means, rape your language, transform your posts into hieroglyphic loads of nonsense which people have to decipher with a Rosetta Stone, only to discover that it's the same question asked 3 threads below. As you can guess, I couldn't care less. But don't try to subvert what's right (asking for help) and what's wrong (being lazy and impolite).
It took me about 2 minutes on this forum to figure out how to root my phone - was a very easy process compared to my previous Acer. As someone who is new to the Play scene this forum is about the same as any other, some helpful, some rude.. I don't see what the issue is...
Just because people are so called "newbs" they post on here thinking they will get the answer quicker than searching themselves. Which is untrue. Sometimes people get flamed, sometimes they get no answer at all and in the time they are waiting for an answer they could have found it with a google search or xda search.
If people dont know how to use xda's search then google it. Googling "rooting xperia play" then clicking on the "More results from forum.xda-developers.com »" shows all the thread related to rooting posted on the xda xperia play fourms.
I fully understand what you are saying and i personally dont see the point in flaming newbs since at one point we all started there. The Xperia Play was my first android phone so i started off knowing nothing and the reason i never got flamed was because if i needed help i would always google it first then use xda search just incase.
People are only rude to those who ask a question that has been answered before...
You come to the forums unwilling to read anything... Instead you post a thread asking for help that already has a guide out 5 threads down....
Did you expect warm welcomes for being lazy?
Yet you are trying to justify that being lazy is the correct way and everyone else should spend time and effort to search an existing thread and link it to your lazy ass...I got two words for you. **** off =D

So..... when did this become an english language forum?
I don't understand why you get so angry that you have to use our superior language.
There was no point of sending the Spanish Armada (which sunk btw) to simply point someone in the right direction.
I'm not angry that I have to use English. I write much more English than Spanish these days. What makes me unhappy is that I have to decipher poor writing, and it's adding insult to injury when the one who writes poorly is a native speaker. That applies to the three languages I happen to know: Spanish, English and German. Writing your own language poorly is a conscious choice when you're all literate (as you write in forums which requires you to know how to read) and perfectly capable of using proper English (as is the case here, since it's a USAn guy and an English sidekick, and you're from NZ), and choosing to write poorly and making yourself hard to understand is disrespectful towards the people who read you.

I agree with this, since people are not writting an SMS there is no reason to write poorly, I actually stop reading the thread at the 3rd line but i saw Logseman reply and got interested
I'm also a "Newbie", my Xperia Play was my first android and I rooted my Play at the first try. You just have to do a quick search and follow instructions step by step. There is always an answer for almost every problem you can have, and if there is a new problem the first ones that will notice are advanced users that will post an answer.

Yes I am waiting for a one click but because the dev of Verizon version asked if we could refrain from asking for a code and the stuff needed takes to long to download at 76k. Helping Others

Just a message to say, that at one POINT we all were noobs at one time, what’s the since of these forums if you can’t find help here? Hell, some of the noobs (including me) may have went thru something that the old timers haven’t been thru, so I see it as any problem is good info to someone. I went thru this power struggle back in the BBS days…arg, I helped crack games and progs, ie INC and Razor911, and so on, and there were a bunch of hot heads with attitudes. I for one cherish the forums for info. But I continuously see people slam others for their lack of knowledge. Others need to realize that a problem to someone is a fix to another. MY OPINION ONLY! Should be a thread for one thing only, IF YOU BRICKED YOUR PHONE, post it here, with what and how, that will answer most of these questions, so the more experienced users can either shine or move along.

Im the same way. I always will try to answer a question if i have a clue about it. I have gotten slammed before too just for asking questions but oh well. Every one is different, we aren't all the same.
Its a double side sword man I wouldn't flame someone but unfortunately some other people refuse to help themselves. They want answers spoon fed to them I try to search as much as I can before posting a problem and if there is a thread related to it I ask there first as well. Then you also have people posting in dev sections for request and questions because they will get more people to view their threads.

Half the people who get flamed dont read threads dont read how to flash or root phones properly then when they screw up they want their hand held and someone to coddle them and say its ok, waste of time tbh

All the knowledge is already here, people just want others to find it for them and that's when the dookie hits the fan. Most users lurked and learned before even making accounts or pointless threads. I have been here since Cyanogen put out his 1st mod for the G1 and didn't make an account til a year after I had learned how to follow directions and search for answers.

I agree, but you can tell the non-readers, like you said posting in the wrong forum would be one of them, but I saw a guy get ripped for asking a simple question about what mods work with what...just rubbed me the wrong way.

Agreed. I did not want to start a war, but the reply the guy got was a bunch of shi*** and were long posts about not the problem, but how he was a noob. If the person wants to rag another, don't write a 100 word post on the issue of noob, or don't post at all.

A great example of this is the G2x forums... The noobish questions are one after another. Same dam questing anx that's why people get irritated.

For me personally I don't mind the flaming for the people that do stupid crap lol. Then again I also come from clubrsx which is a car forum with much more grown up people. Usually stupid questions there and noobs who do stupid things are met with incredibly funny and harsh flaming lol . On a more serious note we will always have flaming and always have silly threads because we just will noobs will never read or try to be self sufficient no matter how big the bold letters might be telling them to. I do commend the people that search first and do try to find there own answers before asking for help I've had some users pm me asking for help with stuff I totally don't mind helping someone out but I'm use to everyone I know asking me to help root and mod their phones.

well if I see that they have 1 or so post, I see them at first legit questions, then, see them again post somewhere else asking stupid questions again, that would be considered to be those lazy as*** that you guys are referring to, humm, you guys have been here a long time, and seen alot, so I will keep the crap to myself. Sorry guys for bringing it up.

[Q] (READ PLEASE) Why is everyone a big DOOOSSHH?? (yes I know what i did there)

My goodness lol I know a lot about hacking, my phone, roms ,general troubleshooting and a lot of other things and also a lot about forums and the vermin that live in them. I just don't say much because I never was a forum posting guy I'm a do it my self guy. Throwing "NOOB" around to some guy/girl that just wants to know how to operate or troubleshoot his/her galaxy that he paid a great deal for is b.s. I read countless a** hole replies that don't even answer the question, a lot of the answers are just failed attempts to sound like the "cool" sarcastic guy that sits in the back of a remedial math class. I've been coming to xda since I had a g2 (never registered) and slowly and slowly the community is turning from people that would kind of help you to d**ks with a false sense of entitlement that reply with a totally unreasonable response. Yeah it's common knowledge to a lot of people but some people really don't know what they are doing and don't want a brick and need the help of this lovely community. I'm not ranting its just my opinion on whats CLEARLY going on if you don't like it f*** off and go fly a kite.
I do not support smart guys who constantly ask eta questions though.
The problem I see is that, as you say, these people don't know what they're doing and want the information handed to them.
I've never seen a post get a BAD response when the person clearly outlined their problem and explained what they already knew and why their research wasn't getting them anywhere.
The people that DON'T make posts like that need to do some research - not just have the information thrown at them for their own good. Think about if you just gave someone information on how to build and operate a bomb without them knowing how it worked and how to do it safely. Sure, they're probably not going to lose fingers - but they could brick an expensive device and it's kinder to give some tough love and pointing in the direction of research, knowledge, and understanding before they make a mess that they can't get out of.
In the words of H.P. Lovecraft : "Do not call up that which you can not put down".
Yeah I know what your saying and I agree. Just that some people ask questions live what boxes should I check in Odin, whats a zip lol, should I wipe b4 or after, what original dev, how do I root. Those a simple questions and they are common knowledge to a lot (maybe not how do I root because many things can go wrong if you derp it up). These can get simple responses or links but ppl will post turd responses like noon read the op, we answers that in 2011 look it up, just don't root. Stuff like that I'm not saying go in to depth with a dude asking about something when he doesn't ever know the dos, don'ts and risk. I know I'm not the only one there's threads about it.

I agree 100%. The thing that irritates the F out of me is the few that run around here acting like they know it all... Then ***** and say search, then like each others post for being asshats to someone who asked a simple question that deserved a simple answer. I do occasionally call them out but it doesn't do any good.

Then a civilized guy posted a link to the apk (which is simple to find for the average user) and said to the guy above something like I think this is what you meant to do but the xda douche in you did not allow it.

Because they think they are cool when in reality they are more noobish than the person they are replying to. There's a simple if you don't have anything good to say dont say nothing at all...but I guess their mamas didn't teach them that common sense.
For some reason they rather reply being a total dipsh*t than simply IGNORE the post. Don't get me wrong some of the replies Realy are deserving like the ones when the person constantly whines about their problem and want to b*tch aT the dev...most of the time noobs...such as my self just want simply answered because we've search and couldn't find the answers or we found an answers but it pertains to another device.
They probably didn't get much love from high school so wants to be the cool jogs here

To all in this thread.......
Most of the moderators would appreciate it if everyone were considerate, kind and patient........BUT......... that said,
Some do act with arrogance and inconsideration, ......report them we are here to assist.
Understand that the important responsibilities of a member is to Read enough that they can understand what to ask and how to ask it.
One of the overriding problems with XDA is we (the members) are not from one country, or one culture..so, many have to use Google translator or some other method to post in in English.
This creates an additional layer of misunderstanding, which in turn, makes things even more complicated.
Couple all of this with have a bunch of adolescent kids posting as well..... and now you have described XDA.......
So, with this explanation......it basically means to be patient, polite and considerate and when others begin to troll, or flame report them, this keeps these inconsiderates participation to a minimum
Unfortunately, this is thread is way to prone to escalating a flame-war....
Thank you for posting and "venting" off some of the common frustration we all feel from time to time....

Like this forum but don't

Man I like this forum but don't at the same time.. I love the fact there's so much stuff on here that's so helpful to everyone but at the same time the people on here are 50/50 meaning about 50% you are nice and do realize a beginner has to start somewhere and learn as they go and are willing to help as much as possible you also realize you were once there yourselfs mean while there's the other 50% forget they where beginners and noobs at one point and still think that everyone shouldn't ask questions and automatically think you know the answer as well as give rude and smart butt answers or links... uncalled for is about the best way to describe those answers its amazing that the admin allow these people to give rude and uncalled for comments but when someone responds with a rude or smart butt comment that person either gets a warning or banned and the other person gets nothing kind of interesting to me .... everyone should be treated fairly and evenly .. but had to say something from a lot of posts I've been reading

I'm probably one of those guys that sometimes gives snarky responses. I really am trying to be nice and help the person find what they are looking for. That's 90% of the reason I post on here: I remember what it's like to not know much and to come to this community with very little knowledge.
That being said, I also hope people would follow the rules when posting, one of which is to search before starting a thread. I completely understand the complaints of people saying that there's too many threads on this site and it's difficult to find what you're looking for with search, but making a thread that's identical to an existing one is compounding the problem.
The way I try to help out with the problem is to take the time to write out a full response (not just give a link) and to (hopefully gently) point out that this topic has been covered and to look at the correct thread. I know Cnexus and I have been pretty good about this, although sometimes the deluge of MB1 update threads do make me a little short-tempered, and for that, I apologize.

You fine man I understand the rules and read them so I know personally to search before asking and when posting make sure its in the right section.... as far as posting links example I was referring to about smart butt links is the google one I've notice is when you click on link takes you to google it automatically writes in the question the person would ask then at bottom it would say " now was that so hard " kinda funny but smart butt to I'm its a simple question that person could of easily just said hey man look please go read the forum rules and make sure you post in the right section simple and nicely said you know
But yes it is annoying when people ask / post same stuff that's been posted already 400 times before them again people should just be nice " hey man that question / concern / opinion has been posted already please search google and forums thank you "

I know that the user is traditionally at fault (the old IT adage of PBMAC - the Problem Between Monitor and Chair), but I also think it's partially the fault of the xda app on the phone. The search function on there is so woefully inept that I have only used it once or twice (and have never found what I was looking for). On the other hand, when creating a thread on the PC, the website even gives you a list of similar threads that might help you out. There are many times where I've been creating a thread and when I put in the title, a half dozen similar threads popped up with the exact answer I was looking for. I know coding this into the android app would be difficult (if not impossible), but it must be noted that almost all of the MB1 update threads had the "sent from the XDA app..." tag at the bottom. I still tell them to search before posting, but I honestly can't blame them because of the apps search function's shortcomings.
Hi
To respond to the first part about allowing abuse...we don't. But bear in mind we have 5 milllion users, 50000 new posts a day and moderators that are constantly moving questions from the wrong section, breaking up childish nerd fights, responding to reported posts, investigating kang issues, and trying to have a job, family and life. We are not reading every post that enters XDA. We respond to reports by users. And every mod action requires several minutes of "paperwork" to document what was done.
Now to the post about searching, yup app search stinks, however if you switch to browser view there are more search options available as well as googling and adding XDA in the search parameter. The phone is quite large so searching through browser view or just with google is a lot easier than in days past.

What's frustrating is all of these rule quoters that do nothing but add to the spam. Just answer the question then point them in the right direction or just ignore the post...
There is a saying you can led a horse to water but you can't force them to drink. But if can shoot the f*cker if he is too stubborn
I know sometimes when I was new to this forum (i am not a developer), I would get irritated when posting a question and you would see a lot of "views" but no replies/posts with any help. But you have to realize (as I did), as smart as these guys are, sometimes, nobody knows the answer to your question! So posting "crickets crickets" or something else snarky to that effect won't help you get an answer either. Most people are nice enough to help and will either post a link that you may have overlooked, or a real answer (or at least acknowledge your existence)...so in that case just be patient for an answer. Alot of the times when you google search, maybe you did not type in just the right terms and didn't get the link you were looking for.

If we just answer the question, we encourage further infractions... It would be kind of like banks taking a policy of giving money to anyone who threatens to rob the bank - we would have more robbers, not less...
Ignoring them almost inevitably leads to more noise from them, not less, so that won't fix their broken understanding of the rules...
But if we add to that spam now, there is a chance that someday, maybe it will end... It isn't likely, but I would rather have the rules on my side
I don't enable people to hide behind excuses - every search on the Internet isn't broken, they just require a little effort (almost as much effort as creating a new post, lol)

How about just showing people how well searching works and provide them proof of it's efficiency by linking them to your search results. This both; enlightens the user of search functionality, while also assisting them with their question.

Let's be nice people

Been skulking here for a few days and now that I picked up my new S4 (!!!!), I'll be here alot (he said happily).
I'm noticing a lot of snottiness already.
It sure does ruin my experience seeing the trolls that cannot resist scolding people or just generally being snotty.
Let's set the tone early and all promise to be nice to each other.
An example that comes to mind are the people who can't resist chiding people for not doing a search first. Myself, I have had the worst luck searching but always do before posting.
Just my two cents.
One thing I hate is when people ask stupid questions that could have been answered with a simple search, sometimes just a google search would answer it. Although I'm being very nice since this is a new device and for some people this may be their first Samsung phone so I'm a little lenient right now. Anyways welcome, and I'm sure you'll love this phone.

You make my point nicely, Thanks.
You don't like someones post, you can always just ignore it. Thanks for being so lenient.
I was always taught that the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. And as I said, speaking from experience, searching doesn't always find results here.
Newbies need our help....not to be scolded, chided, attacked, or otherwise harrassed. I've seen other forums here that are ruthless. And have heard people comment that they are afraid to ask a question or apologise ahead of time lest the trolls swoop in.
This is all discussed elsewhere in the forum rules....likely under Etiquette.
Again just trying to help set the tone. If I know the answer, I'll answer. If I don't I won't. Either way, I promise to be nice.

And I speaking from experience is if you search you'll find the answer. I understand newbies need help sometimes, HELP not be held by the hand thru everything, cuz then they will never learn. We were all newbs at one point or another so if I could search and find answers without having to ask stupid questions ( and no the only stupid questions aren't the ones you don't ask) then so can others.

THANK YOU!!! I'd considered posting a thread just like this days ago. This is my first time in Tmobile, but I've been around XDA for a long time, and I've been appalled by some of the comments (consistently left by the same people). How hard is it to be nice or just abstain from commenting if you're just going to be a jerk. Thinking back many of the post that received nasty comments were or up by people with only 1-20 post on XDA. They're noobs, people, just like we once were.
Just yesterday I answered a question about having an AT&T GS4 unlocked to use on T mobile. Yes, the post should have been in the AT&T forum, and it should have been in the Q&A section at the very least. But I knew the answer and have the information with a link to the appropriate thread. Kindly.
On a happier note, how awesome is this phone?!
OK, I'll bite only because this is my thread.
What gives you or anyone else the right to scold people?
Read the rules. It is explicitly said that trolling is not cool. And attacking people because their post does not meet your criteria is trolling.
And it makes you look bad.
@eflip88, I am not directing this directly at you. No disrespect intended. I asked for input. I appreciate the discourse.
I was speaking generally, at the people who DO feel the need to be jerks. Not at you or your actions. Although your reply summed it up nicely.

There's just certain people that have an obsessive need for conflict...It doesn't matter whether it's the internet or anything else they do..They'll always look for the worst way to handle something.....Your best bet is to just ignore them and move on...They want you to respond, That's the point..To fuel their misery...It sucks to see but it's never going to stop..especially when they have a computer screen to feel 9ft tall behind..
The worst is when people actually write out some long reply about searching instead of freaking linking the person to the relevant post, so annoying....
I have been on XDA long enough to know that people always want instant gratification to their needs. It is like they are entitled to it. Instead of searching like the way forums are meant to be. Day after day, they kept posting the same freaking question. There are community members who participate in these forums, and there are leechers who just come for the information and leave as quickly once they got what they wanted. These leechers usually dont even search the forums for answers, they just ask questions that have been answered like more than 20x (literally). We can be nice up to a point, but after that, you gotta take out the broom to sweep them away. Sometime it is better not to have than to have.

Lol, why would I be crying? The only people who would be crying are those so called leechers who wont be getting any help and get scolded in the forums.

OK, I'll bite only because this is my thread.
What gives you or anyone else the right to scold people?
Read the rules. It is explicitly said that trolling is not cool. And attacking people because their post does not meet your criteria is trolling.
And it makes you look bad.

Well attacking someone doesn't constitute as trolling but is certainly against the rules either way.
If I see that someone has asked a question which can easily be found via a search, I will give the user the answer and mention that it was easily found by SEARCHING and that they'll have more luck finding things if they actually search first. <-- As you can see, it gets the point across that they should search but does so in a friendly manner.
If, however, I see that the same person is constantly asking questions which require extremely little effort to find the answer, I'll change my response to something like "Here's a great idea BUT it's quite revolutionary and might be a bit shocking at first.
Try using the search feature this site has provided us with.
I told you it was shocking. It's fine though because once you've got used to the idea, you'll realise that I'm actually correct in what I'm saying and you will then begin to search for answers (otherwise you might find yet another really shocking post).
Normally I wouldn't respond like this but this isn't exactly the first time you've asked a question which would only take a few seconds of searching. Whenever you have a question, you don't even think of searching. You just come straight out and ask it, without taking into consideration how dumb it could possibly make you look.
Believe it or not, this is a DEVELOPMENT site. Not a childcare site. Not a help desk. A development site. Are questions allowed here? Certainly but no one is here to hold your hand and give you all the answers. We also expect some work from you aswell. Even if that's simply searching before you post and actually paying attention to what you read, that's good enough.
You start doing that and then I can start to help you if you have any real problems." <-- This is not so friendly but well deserved and there's nothing wrong with this response in the slightest. It's very rare I'll make a post like this but when I do it's really effective and the user ends up becoming a better member because of it.
I totally agree with your intentions though and hope a better attitude can ensue across the entirety of XDA so that it can become a friendlier place to be
