[Q] Need Help Resolving Few Issues - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone. I haven't been working with custom ROMs for long, so I'm a little lost with what I might be missing here.
Phone:
Sprint HTC EVO 4G
Cyanogenmod 7.0.3.1
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.11.19
Kernel Version: 2.6.37.4-cyanogenmod-01338-g0374804
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7.0.3.1-Supersonic
Build Number: GRI40
Problem:
I recently updated from CyanogenMod 6 to CyanogenMod 7. Since then all heck has been breaking lose on my normally happy Evo. I was extremely pleased with CyanogenMod 6 due to better battery life, faster operation, better features than stock, etc. However, since the update to 7, I've been experiencing the following problems... but I do have to say 7 it's beautiful!
Battery life now sucks... BAD!
* Went from 1 charge a day (or less) to multiple per day and there's less software on it than before.
* Battery history indicates the radio is consuming 48% of battery.
Data has been terrible and now no longer works at all.
* I no longer have even 3G, but only shows white "1x" on status bar.
* Wi-Fi is now the only means I have to consume data.
4G/WiMAX commonly doesn't stay connected either or allow data.
GPS is out to lunch. It skips all over the place and loses signal every few seconds.
Questions:
Do I need to update the radio?
If so, where do I find either the latest or appropriate version for use with CyanogenMod 7?
Are there updates to 7.0.3.1 that will fix battery life & other issues?
Some forums were saying to run PRI, but I haven't had that since my phone was stock. How do I obtain that?
Given my phone's info above, would you recommend I install or update anything else?
Thanks in advance for all the help!

Update all radios. Check my sig for a link.
Flash a rooted Sense ROM, based on the Evo (this disqualifies MikG, Director's Cut, Synergy and other Sense 2.1 ROMs, because those are based on the Evo Shift (I've had issues with Shift-based ROMs not reprovisioning data). Update PRL. Reboot.
Go into EPST (Dial ##3282#, Choose edit mode), enter your MSL code (download and use MSL Reader from the Market to get it), Data Profile, hit the menu button and choose restore. Just sit there, your phone will reboot and everything will go back to default. Let it reprovision, but when it says "Updating PRL" hit cancel.
Wipe everything in recovery, flash ROM of your choice.
Use 3G Supercharger if you want.
You can try those things above to see if they do any good.

Try Deck's as suggested above. He is a great ROM developer and often updates. I personally use SavagedZen kernel when on his ROM. For a flashable GPS fix, see my sig.

For battery try out a different kernel like tiamat 3.3.7 or 4.0.6, SZ 2.2.1 those seem to be the best ones you can try the sbc versions you'll get a little more life out of them you can find them on kernel manager from the market.
You can check this out for your radios.

@Shadow,
In order to answer you actual questions:
YES! Update your radios from Calkulins thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
Grab the latest update, youll be happy. This will update PRI as well.
There is a RC1 of CM 7.1, which is pretty good. Based on 2.3.4 which is just improved GB. Though it is not considered a stable release yet, if that is what you are looking for.
Considering this gets your signal working proper you should notice imedeate results for battery life. I would recommend the Battery Calibration app from market, follow instructions.
The above GPS link is good, exactly what you should look into. I recommend the Qualcom 1.1 works great every time. However, after flashing new radios check your GPS again to see how it is working. Once that is solved, get GPS status from market and check out all the features it has. It can clear GPS cache, download "assistance data" and give you a precise time it takes to lock on to better diagnose GPS issues.
Lastly, you may want to consider doing a clean install, doing a FULL wipe using a wipe all .zip and clear user data, cache and dalvik. Not sure if you did this the first time, but it helps to avoid any errors from leftovers from your previous ROM.

Since you are going to update your radios, I would recommend updating it thru HBOOT just update with sprint lover's rom here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830153
Just load up the PC136IMG and let it update and then install the rom of your choice afterwards or nand restore a back up of your desired rom.
Personally either way you update should be fine, but HBOOT seems a bit safer.

Wow, you guys are amazing!
shawayne21, thanks I appreciate the recommendation. However, I'm not currently in the market for another ROM. I just want to get what appear to be mostly radio issues resolved. I have tried several other ROMs when I rooted my EVO and immediately fell in love with CyanogenMod. I will keep this in mind for possible future ROM explorations though. Thanks again!
TropicalBrit, thanks a lot for that repost. There is so much content on this site that it's difficult for a noobie like myself to pick out what the most appropriate information is for a particular situation. However, as time goes on and I get more experience I assume that will change.
I will perform the items TropicalBrit reposted and let everyone know how it goes! Thank you immensely to everyone who took the time to help me out! Cheers!

Sounds like you might need to perform a complete and thorough system wipe, preferably using one of the formatting zips.
Then reflash your rom, flash a better kernel, and download your apps fresh from the market.
I've had great success with Tiamat 3.3.7 sbc and Savaged Zen 2.2.1 bfs sbc, running the same baseband as you on hardware 003.

Reverting to a 3.30.651.3 based ROM

I want to preface this by apologizing if this has been covered, but I was unable to find anything with a search.
Every single 3.70 based ROM results in wakelock issues within 24-48 hours. I have tried everything, including flashing the stock rooted rom and no matter what, my phone stops sleeping after a day or so. I fully wipe, flash the rom, and I don't download a single app until the wakelock kicks in, at which point I grab spare parts and get no useful information.
I am currently alternating between CM7 and CM6 because AOSP roms work fine...they just aren't quite as solid as I would like them to be at this point. GPS bugs (I've tried the fixes), no HDMI (I've heard about the beta apps and I'll try those soon), no 4G (I realize this has been added to the nightlies for CM7, but the GPS issues are a deal breaker for now) and slow file transfers between my PC and my phone when using CM7 also kill the rom for me.
I figured I would simply flash the stock rooted 3.30.651.3 so that I could have a fully functional phone without wakelock issues if the need arose. But whenever I try to flash after a full wipe (including dalvik cache), I get stuck on the white HTC EVO screen. All 3.70 roms and AOSP roms flash fine so there must be something I'm missing...do I have to downgrade my radio or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated. And once again, I'm sorry for the post if this has been covered.
Yes the radio has to be downgraded first. I'm not sure which radio you need but you should check out one of Viruses rom threads since his roms are mostly 3.30 based.

Evo Not Sleeping!

My Evo running warm 2.2 rls 5 with nets 4.3.2 cfs sbc nohavs suv stopped sleeping so I decided to just do a full wipe and reflash the rom/kernel. After reflashing I did absolutely nothing to it (no apps installed, etc) to see if it would sleep and waited for an hour or so and still no sleep. Back to recovery, full wipe, flashed rom only, still no sleep! I had calk 1.7.1 on the SD card so I did another full wipe and flashed that and still it won't sleep!! I'm sure it's not some app because no additional apps are installed and i've never had this problem with either rom before. Any ideas what could be causing this? Let me know if more information is needed too!

Could possibly be that your phone doesn't like the PRI you're using. A lot of people had wake lock issues while running the 1.90 PRI, myself included. Downgrading to the 1.77 PRI solved that issue for me right away. I would suggest trying that, if you are indeed on the 1.90 PRI. If you're on 1.77 already, maybe try changing to 1.90. Just make sure when you're flashing the PRI, that you let it finish completely. Its like a radio flash, where you see some different screens and what not, so don't pull the battery!
install Spare Parts. Wait a day or so, then check the battery history in that app, particularly the partial wake usage.
Prl 1.77 seems to work nicely. 1.9 usually gives issues
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
prl is actually 1.34_003 so i'll have to update that and see if anything changes.
I'm attaching spare parts screenshots for the partial wake...see if that gives anyone ideas until I update the prl.
Even with the updated Prl it won't sleep. Any other ideas of what could be causing this? I'm not quite sure how to read the spare parts screens...nothing looks to be out of the ordinary for to me. Are there any other diagnostics tools i could use to see whats keeping it from sleepin?

I don't use spare parts too much, so I could be wrong. But where it says 'android system', i thought you can tap that, and it will show you a list of things that have been running. Not sure. As for other types of diagnostic and useful apps for this type of thing, you can try SystemPanel, OS Monitor, Watchdog. There are more, but I think those are the most popular. Are you sure you don't have a runaway app? This happens after a complete wipe (data, dalvik cache, cache, flash calkulins format all.zip) without adding any apps to the ROM? Just the apps that came loaded up with the ROM? Are you logged into facebook, and have it syncing a lot? If it syncs every hour, that could be a part of your problem.
I've reflashed roms and then simply skipped through all the setup screens and then locked the screen and just let it sit for over an hours and it would not sleep so I'm fairly sure it's not a run away app

Weird. When did this start happening? Any notable time?(any changes you made around when it started happening?) You already confirmed which PRI you were on, and that you updated that. Have you checked your radio version? Maybe if that is also old, as your PRI was prior, then the PRI and the radio aren't jiving. I would make sure that all your radios are updated at this point. All Evo radios, wimax versions, pri's, and nv's are on this page. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485 . You can flash a combo if you want, and flash them all at the same time. If it still does it after making sure that all your radios are updated, and you are using a rom with the latest 3.70 software, then I am at a loss and I apologize. Up to date radios, a clean install of a ROM after a COMPLETE wipe should yield an Evo that sleeps like a rock.
Sleep issue fixed!

Downgrading the PRI from 1.90 to 1.77 resolved my rooted EVO not sleeping issue. I am using the stock 2.2 ROM rooted with unrevoked.
Sleep issue also fixed
Hey,
Just wanted to say I was also having the issue about my EVO 4g not sleeping. I'd unrooted and then re-rooted my phone, and noticed my up time and awake time were the same. Downgraded to 1.77 and immediately my phone slept.
Back down to <10% awake time (thank GOODNESS) lol.
Preciate ya!
I would thank ya, but I can't...yet lol
Sorry, I'm a total noob, what exactly does sleep mean for a phone cause I'm having issues with my evo too with no battery life and I'm running on Myn r. 5

[Q] AOSP mods = no GPS or Wifi - ##GPSCLRX# not working, next step?

I have Fresh ROM and while I don't mind it, the battery life sucks and I was really missing the customization that I had made in CM7. I've tried about 4 other AOSP ROMs hoping for some luck, but nothing worked.
I've done the GPSCLRX fix successfully, but as soon as I load an AOSP ROM neither wifi or GPS work.
I'm running an EVO with hardware 0004, latest PRI and PRL
I've tried running CM Nightly 23 (someone said it worked for them) and 30, Salvaged 1.0, some others briefly...
It's frustrating to see that most people solve this after the first GPSCLRX. I don't seem to be borking it up, but I'm not resolving the problem either.
Questions:
Could I be entering the wrong MSL? I used MSL Reader to pull the code.
Is there a better CM build or a different ROM I should try (sense rom or AOSP)?
Am I doomed to live in Sense ROM mediocrity and never truely be hardcore?
What are my next steps?
No, msl reader is pretty spot on. It works. Now, are you on fresh and still no gps? Being a sense rom, it should work just fine. Also, I read that you tried 4 aosp roms, how many sense roms have tried? I use myn warm two point two because off the customization options it offers, have you checked it out?
Have you tried CM6.1? I know it's not the latest thing, but I loved it. I didn't jump on the CM7 bandwagon until around the time nightly 21 came out because I was so happy with CM6. Unless you just have to have Gingerbread, I'd try it out. It's just as stable as Sense ROMs in my opinion.
Have you tried any of the Senseless Sense Roms?

Download GPS Status from the market, let it d/l the GPS Assist data and synch to you sats, then open maps and see if it pinpoints you.
This is what I always do, even on CM7 and maps and Navigation would work perfectly.
blakeboys: Fresh works perfectly, I also tried Elite II and that also worked very well. I like them both, but just not as much as CM.
plainjane: I haven't tried CM6.1, but I may download that tonight and give it a try, I don't believe that I *need* Gingerbread, so I might have better luck with that, thanks for the help!
craigbailey1986:
- Clockwork Recovery -> Wipe Data, Cache, then run Casxxxx_Format_ALL.zip, Flash FreshRom, Flash gapps, Reboot.
- Skip initial setup, Dialer, ##GPSCLRX#, Enter MSL, Forced Reboot.
- Maps, tap My Location, Select random location, Get Driving Directions (Navigation boots), wait for nav to start, exit nav, sit and wait for 5 to 10 minutes, Reboot to Recovery.
- Wipe Data, Cache, run Casxxxx_Format_All.zip, Flash CM23/30, Flash gapps, flash savage kernel, reboot.
- CM boots with GPS on, but no icon in notification bar and can't get location in Maps, same with wireless.
Let me know if I'm missing something, I could be overthinking this or not doing enough...it seemed straightforward though.
HipKat: I'll give that a try if CM6.1 still gives me the issue tonight.
Thanks for everyones help, hopefully one of these things will work.

After you do the Clear GPS thing let it boot the sense ROM and get ONE good lock with say Google Maps. Then switch back to CM7.
I thought letting it get a lock on the Sense ROM would mess it up but it was the opposite. It had to get one or it would not work.
I found WIFI works but was shakey.
Just a dumb question, what is considered a "lock". Like, hitting My Location and making sure it's within so many meters of accuracy, or leaving the app open long enough to send some data back and forth? Just want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong.
Just an update, finally got some time to work on my phone and the GPS Status tool seemed to have enabled the GPS and maps is working now. Thanks!

Not working
When i type in ##4772579# the numbers just disappear as soon as I hit the last # symbol. I am running a sense rom. When I type that in I cant hit send or call because it disappears. Anyone run into this?
Another thing to try: flash a different kernel.
On my phone, GPS will not work if I run any SavageZen kernel (v2 and up). Never get the flashing GPS icon in the notification bar, nada. Even tried ##GPSCLRX# and used GPSStatus from the market.
However, GPS works fantastic when I run a Tiamat kernel. No idea why.
Also, after you flash to a sense ROM, get the GPS lock on Google Maps, make sure you leave the GPS on when flashing to recovery to restore Nandroid or flash a new AOSP ROM.

It's supposed to do that... or at least that's what happened when I did it. It should take you straight to the screen that asks for your msl, input it and you'll get a message saying that the phone will reboot in 10 seconds. After it reboots, get a lock in maps and leave GPS on. Then turn the phone off, boot to recovery and nandroid restore - or wipe and flash the new rom. This is how I did it and it worked perfectly.
What rom are you using to do the fix?

4G won't connect after flashing ROM

First Android phone, so I still getting up to speed so hoping someone could answer a couple quick questions. I'll start with the questions and then give the history.
1) How do you determine what ROM you have installed?
2) Any ideas why 4G won't connect? Is there any way to troubleshoot this?
3) Is there anyway to tether on 4G?
So I dove right in after purchasing this phone and flashed a ROM (Zedomax) so I could tether. After installing this ROM my battery life went down the drain and it wouldn't hold a charge for more than 6 hours.
So then I flashed the EG30 stock kernel and my battery life returned to normal. Still wanting to tether I tried another ROM (don't remember which one). This ROM had the same battery issues so I once again flashed the stock kernel back to my phone.
So now my battery life is great, but 4g won't connect (i'm in NYC) for a few days now. I've tried pulling battery, want what not to no success.
I believe I am running the stock kernel, but to my surprise I still have root access. No triangle on the home screen and ODIN says I'm using the Samsung Official binary.
Just to clarify, you are flashing kernels, not ROMs. Zedomax is a kernel, EG30 is a kernel, etc. You can find your current kernel version under Settings > About phone > Kernel version.
Also as an FYI, I wouldn't be going all willy nilly flashing kernels that you can't remember the name of. I'd have to imagine that's a good way to possibly brick your phone or have problems like you are with 4G.
I'm no expert on this stuff by any means but I'd probably recommend flashing Bubby's stock kernel or chris41g's version of it that is packaged up with CWM. These will get you back to the stock kernel (assuming you're not there already) and probably get your 4G working. Otherwise you probably need to update your PRL or something along those lines. Someone who actually knows more about this stuff (i.e. not me) may have a better suggestion for you.
Thanks.
Kernel version is 2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EG30-CL435734
Is that stock?

Yep! 10 char
Cool.
So flashing to chris41g's or Bubby's kernels probably won't help me. I'll go searching to figure out how to update my PRL but if anyone has any other ideas I'd be grateful.
Also does anyone know if it is possible to tether over 4G? I was never able to connect unless I turned off 4g before tethering.
It is working again. I started over and flashed Stock-EG30.tar and all is good now.
Out of curiosity did you update your system profile after you flashed? I think it's recommended to do that every time you flash a new kernel.
Settings > About phone > System updates then choose update profile.
Edit - Ahh cool looks like you got it worked out. Cheers!
Nope, I never updated my system profile. That could of been a fix....
Interestingly enough, I was retracing my steps after going stock, after each step I checked 4G connectivity. I lost 4G after enabling AdAway. So I disabled (each change requires a reboot) and got 4G back after the boot. I enabled it again hoping to be able to isolate the issue but after that next reboot I got 4G access with AdAway enabled.
Can't say it is AdAway, but after toggling it, I got 4G back.

[Q] Calkulin's mod (1.3a), phone reboots on its own

Hello everyone,
Couple of days ago I upgraded my E4GT to Calkulin's 1.3a (from a previous version). Since then, I noticed the phone reboots on its own at least once a day and sometimes I miss calls (this might be Sprint's fault though).
This is what I have installed right now:
Code:
Android version: 4.0.3
Baseband version: S:D710.10 S.EL29
Kernel version: 3.0.15-SPH-D710.FC24-CL287574 [email protected] #3
Build number: Calkulins.E4GT.2.ROM.v1.3a
Hardware version: D710.10
The reason my baseband is EL29 is because I read somewhere that newer versions do not support GPS as of yet.
Can someone show me the way please?
Thank you very much
I'm on 1.3a and have super fast gps. I'm on all fc24 stock. No reboots or any issues. The gps can be fixed in several ways. I ran Faster fix and GPS Fix. Now it lock before map is even loaded. The reboot issue can usually be fixed by a good clean install.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
What version did you flash from? I have not had any problems with the random reboots. I have been flashing every tweaked calk rom since fc05. They don't even require format to get up and running.
The only problem I've encountered is that I lost GPS on fc24. I had to use the old "go back to el29 gb for a lock and restore my nandroid backup" trick to get it back.
Did you try the format all and clearing cache?
If you flashed the rom from GB to ICS, then you must make the clean install (using Calk's format all tool). Otherwise, you will experienced the many issues that no one is going to help you because you did not follow the instruction.
I had the same issue after going from 1.3 to 1.3a. No wipe or resets helped. Just went back to el29 like usual and flashed 1.3a again it was fine.

Not so true I've been flashing every ICS leaks and I always make a clean install and I"m in the same boat as him so I did some testing and I found out that when I have 4G on ( in which I always do ) that's when my phone reboot at least 3 or 4 times during the day. Now on 3G it NEVER reboot so I d/l the Calk 1.3a again with clean install and flashed it and I still have the same problem.
Something to this as the reboots were significantly worse when I was on 4g, though not exclusively. The reboots were bad enough on my phone while on ics that am now back to 2.8.1

Having the same random reboots. Always do full wipe with calks format all. Tried several different modems and versions.
Sorry guys, after some testing I noticed that only when I leave 4G on do the reboots occurr. I have turned off 4G and it has been going for over 24 hours without reboots. I never use 4G but I felt like using my "unlimited" Sprint data plan so I started to use 4G and then I noticed the reboots.
I have gone from GB to ICS without a clean install, which I believe is the reason why I have the EL29 in my specs.
Seeing as how this version has "a" in the name, I am blaming this on the alpha release.
Hopefully it will get addressed by Calk (who is the man, btw).
Thank you!
I updated phone by going to settings/about phone/system updates and ran the updates and havent noticed any reboots since. But this is at home where I get intermittent 4g so I will know for sure if its fixed when I'm at work tomorrow.
tyler2time: thanks for the info, I just updated Profile and PRL (but Firmware and Android were up-to-date already). I will test this out throughout the day tomorrow and report back.

The EL29 Baseband is the modem you are using. It does not change when you flash a new Rom. You can flash any modem you want to try but they have to be flashed separately. The a in the 1.3a build is because in v1.3, Calkulin accidentally used the FC22 kernel. He uploaded the Rom again with the FC24 kernel and renamed it to 1.3a. I consider every one of these leaks Alpha builds since they are built for testing purposes. Thanks for posting your results.
Hi DataHawg,
Thank you for the info. I found out that the modem is updated independently of the ROM. I am planning to do a format_all and re-install with latest modem, hopefully that will be more stable.
Another strange thing happened: I went to sleep with phone battery at 46% and woke up today with a dead phone. I saw that battery was drained somehow. I don't leave apps/services running except for a few (dropbox, box.net, facebook, twitter).
I will report how the new upgrade goes.
Thank you again, you guys are doing a helluva job here!
Today I read in the original Calkulin thread that modems used in ICS all have trouble with 4G data reboots, so I guess it's a known issue.
But now I'm having another issue with HTC_IME mod crashing. Can anyone help?
Thanks!
EDIT: Found the problem to be text prediction. I turned it off in the HTC_IME mod settings and all works fine now, no crashes so far. Thank you everyone!
