HTC Desire Shuts Down at 30% Battery

I need help. My HTC Desire keeps shutting down automatically at 30% battery life. And when I power it back on, it stays on for a while then automatically shuts down again. The same happens when I havent fully charged it and its still in the charger.
It does the same with both my batteries.Is this a fault or a type of security feature? Is there a way around It?

definite fault - have you flashed it or is it the stock rom ?
either way, it's not a 'feature'

I'd be seriously pissed off if that was a security feature.

If you're rooted with ClockWork, go into advanced menu and reset battery data.
Seems to me that the info regarding battery usage, cycles etc has been corrupted.
Could be because you're changing batteries.

I might have experience similar issues. Last week my battery was approx 30% when my desire suddenly shut down.
After a while I was able to boot into Android but it immediatly shut down again because of the low battery.
If it happens again tomorrow, I'll try wiping battery stats.
Please report back if you find a solution.

It is the same for my Desire. It also goes off with 20 or 30% power left.
I have a rooted device. I wiped battery statistics via recovery and as a result - now Desire shuts at 30% (but before it happened at 20%)
I am using Modaco r3.1-bravo-desire-modacocustomrom-withadditions-a2sd+
This is really weird.....
Any thoughts or recommendations?
Guys, which rom are you using in your devices?

Had no issues on r3.1 MoDaCo but I'm using my own ROM (check sig for link) now and haven't experienced a single problem with the battery.

Last week I wallcharged when the device was off and I was able to drain it down to 16%.
So it's good.

Thank you for advice! Will definitely try.

Any luck with this? I've ran juice plotter and watched my battery drain from 23% to 0 in 10 minutes.

Shutting down at higher than, say, 1-3%, means that either the battery has defective cells (not sure how likely that is here - only seen it on laptop batteries) or the meter isn't calibrated properly. Most of 'em recalibrate once they've hit empty, so if it's the latter, it should theoretically resolve itself. Anyone know if there's a possibility to recalibrate the meter on Android (full charge, full discharge and then full charge)?

That is really weird!
Once I charged Desire (when it was switched off) with the wall charger - I was able to work till 7%. I was happy and thought that the problem has been solved.
But I was too fast!!! Yesterday Desire switched off again at 27%.
Totally frustrated.....

Weird problem ain't it. I managed to charge up my phone to about 15% after it died and it slowly died like it would normally

I guess to rule out software you should clear the battery info. Do a full charge (some say with phone off), do a full discharge and then a full charge again.
A full charge-discharge-charge cycle should, at least in theory, make sure the software knows what's up.
And to be sure, use your battery in another Desire if possible. If that one shows the same behaviour with your battery (and obviously shouldn't have any troubles before) it must be something with the battery.
Or! Just start nagging at HTC and get yourself a new battery with some nice social engineering

on earlier ROMS(custom as well as stock) my desire used to shut down at 14-15%
but with insertcoin 1.14 its shutting down at 25-30%.....real pain int he ass
I have also calibrated the battery by emptying it and wall charging but no luck..
any solution guys?

why people dont think that this is a real problem im trying to search for a solution from more than 1 year but there is no permanent solution ,,,, many phones have this problem ,,, !!!!!!!!!!! very strange

Use usb connection with pc to charge your phone: it's long time but the best way

[Q] Instant discharge.

So, I'm on my Evo today, playing a game (Air Strike). My battery is at 93% when I picked the phone up to play, and the phone is plugged in. Suddenly, with no warning what-so-ever, my phone shuts off. Of course a mini-freak out and many "wtf's" ensue. No warning, no signs, even the led went off. I pulled the battery, put it back, then plugged the phone in again. After that it gave me the blinking light indicating the battery was too low to turn on. After a few minutes charging she came back on and battery was at 5%.
How the hell does a battery go from 93% to 0% in less than 5 minutes, and give no warning at all?? Anybody else ever have this problem?

Wow I've have never heard or that happening before. Maybe a glitch in the battery stash? Did it take awhile to charge up to 100%? Can you reproduce the issue again?

I had this problem with my older phone once. The battery itself may have a problem or your phone is not getting charged properly.
Try These :
1) Try charging the phone overnite from the Wall charger (Not through USB of your computer)
2) If the above does not work, and you have access to another evo battery, then try using that.(try using a friends battery and charger for a day. ) (Ofcourse needless to say the charger and battery must be for Evoonly )
In my case, my phone started working fine again after getting my battery & charger replaced.

Probably shouldn't worry about it too much just yet. Could be something as simple as your battery meter was mis-calibrated. The meter itself is software so it can easily be wrong/off. If it continues you may have a bad battery.

Sounds to me like something is wrong. Did you just get the phone or have you had it?

Idk... The phone had been plugged in for most of the day (hadn't gone anywhere. Lazy day lol) And like I said, the led went completely out as well.
Haven't had the problem again, so we'll see I guess....

I've seen some posts about the Evo battery shutting off the charge when its being used. Were you using your Evo while it was charging?
If the battery doesn't seem to be giving you percentages that are accurate, you might want to recalibrate your battery.

Battery recalibration (Thanks to Cyanogen for this and to fachadick for bringing it to my attention).
If you're experiencing higher than normal battery drain, try the following:
1. Charge the phone to full battery; let it keep charging until the battery says it is fully charged. Do not just wait until the light is green, it isn't always fully charged, causing a lot of inaccuracies. (You can check by going to: Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> Battery Level = Full.)
2. Boot to recovery and wipe battery stats.
(To have the most accurate of battery stats, reboot the phone immediately after wiping the battery stats and wait for your ROM to boot completely to the desktop. Once your entire boot is done and you have full access to the phone, go ahead and pull the charger and continue.)
3. Do not charge the phone until after draining the battery completely, resulting in it automatically shutting off. Take out the battery, and keep trying to turn on your phone until it will not turn back on at all.
4. Recharge the phone completely and then use as you normally would.
This is a method that has been proven to work, I am sure there are other ways. My battery lasts longer after doing this and the reading is much more accurate. It might be advisable to do this after every ROM install if you want the most battery life and most accurate battery reading by the phone's software.

Battery calibration - never finish charging in recovery?

Hey there,
I tried to calibrate my battery the last few days...
There where so different descriptions on how to do it right.
But well at some point they all said to charge the phone turned of ( well it automaticaly jumps into recovery, right?).
And it was said charge it till the led goes green.
But I think it never happens in my case.
In one case I fully chagred my phone powered on and then turned it off, plugged it in again. The red/orange led staied there even after 3 hours...
The other day I fully discharged the phone and wanted to charge it in recovery mode. So I plugged it in, the red/orange led began to flash, recovery booted and I went to bed. About 10 hours late I woke and the led was still flashing as before.
I had no patience and turned it on. With the system running it tells me, that its at 100%.
Turning it off again unplug and replug it will show the red/orange led again but not flashing.
Its a european desire z (germany)
On Virtuous 0.9
With clockwork 2.something
Any ideas? Should I have been even more patient to see the green light in recovery? How long could it take?

It seems the question of how to charge the battery pops up at least once a week now, with the same misconceptions. There is no such thing as calibrating the battery. All you are doing is calibrating the battery meter (just a volt meter) on the phone. Li ion batteries cannot (and should not) be calibrated or conditioned. The best way to calibrate the meter is to charge the phone to 100%, drain to about 20%, repeat a couple times. You should not discharge the battery below 20%. I don't see any advantage to charging the phone while its off (except that it will charge faster, of course). I always charge mine while its on (with screen off).
I don't know why your green light is not coming on. Mine comes on after the phone has been charging for about 2 hours or less. But I am on the stock ROM, so its possibly something to do with the ROM, so you might have some better response by searching or asking in the Virtuous thread.

Yeah I know that you just calibrate the voltage meter but its just easier to say battery calibration.
Well maye the misconceptions occur because there are plenty of different answers spread and its easy to become confused. I just avereged over these methods and the consensus was to change fully while turned off.
The only way I could think of loading in recovery is better, is that the software prevents loading when it thinks battery is full (but in fact it is not), but I relly dont know.
And you say even after deleting battery stats there is no need for discharging till shutdown (to show the limits or anything)? To reset on full battery is enought?

Well, your problem first if that you said you had recovery 2.x and that if you turned it off it automatically jumps to recovery.. you seem to have the first recovery that the power off feature wasnt quite working well.. upgrade to a 3.x then like the above user said but drain the battery until it reaches %15.. thats when the Connect To A Charger popup shows up.. and charge to 100% and do couple cycles of these..

Should I calibrate my battery?

Lately my phone will go through a massive drain until it hits around 55% then it will drain normally. I have not changed anything since this started. Any suggestions? I'm thinking I may need to calibrate my battery.

Thanks for your input. I want to wait a few days before I do it. So it will give it time to see if that really is the problem. This only happened yesterday and today so maybe tomorrow will be better. Besides the only time I really have to do it is later this week.

You charge your battery to 100%, wipe batterystats.bin, then run the battery down to 0%, then charge uninterrupted back up to 100%

Battery Calibration does it help ?
I have a similar situation and i followed the battery re-calibration method too but still didnt help.
Situation - The battery would charge till 88% but will show its fully charged. Recently put Vivokat so now its even more prominent. Every reboot drops the battery by steps, like i would reboot and the battery would go from 80 to 65 just like that, no gradual decline or anything. And even after a full charge (the green light indicator is on) still the battery would continue charging.
Tried - I tried resetting the batterystats.bin file as suggested, fully charged till 100% then removed batterystats.bin file then allowed to discharge all the way then charged continuously till 100%. No outcome
Anything else that can be done ?

Weird battery charging behaviour

Hi all,
My One X charges strangly I think. It charges really fast from about 80% give or take. It should charge slowly (given the nature of the battery). When it says the battery is charged, I unplug the device and within 15 minutes or so the battery is already at 90%. I have a feeling that the device somehow think the battery is fully charged while it is not really the case. Could this be resolved by doing a factory reset so that the battery stats will be removed? Or should I seek some other solution for it?
I'm currently on stock 1.28.xxx.x, the same problem occured at 1.26.xxx.x.

The green charging light goes on at ~95%. When the phone charges all the way to 100%, it disconnects itself from the charger until it goes back down to say, 95% again. When it hits 95% it will then charge itself back up to 100%, and this cycle will repeat. That's why sometimes when you pull the phone off the charger it is down to 90% or 95% or whatever sometimes within a few minutes.
