No sound through earpiece during calls - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
Earlier this week my earpiece suddenly stopped working and now I cannot hear anyone's voice when receiving/making calls (yes in-call volume is maxed out).
I am ec05 stock rooted running the genocide 2.0 kernel. I've been this way for about a month with absolutely no issues at all until this week.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Maybe the ear piece is broken

Tried doing a factory reset (should I have done a reset through Clockwork instead?). Nothing changed.
Gonna see if I can get a replacement from Radioshack since we have the warranty with them.

try turning speaker phone on /off while in call. my phone used to do that randomly sometimes.

Just tried that to no avail
Thanks though.

Odin back to straight stock and see if it works.

Had something similar happen to me. Installed one of those apps that adjusts the ringers and notifications etc and the problem vanished. My problem was intermittent though.

Your ear piece is dead, go to sprint and its 35 bucks to get it replaced, I had to do it not even a month ago.

I just bought a new earpiece, keyboard, and Mic.
The Mic has always been garbage when using speaker phone. The person on the other end has problems hearing me when on speaker so hopefully that will fix it.
The #4 key was sheared off when the slide helper fell out...I already pulled it apart and set that back in place.
And then the damn ear piece quit working. I found one on eBay and am waiting on it to get here so I can pull it apart again and replace all this ****. I don't understand how all this stuff breaks AND I have to deal w unfinished software LOL. Glad It's my wife's phone hehe.

My new earpiece didn't correct the issue. I have tried everything from Odin to multiple roms. I give up. Lame. Very lame.

Update:
I have replaced the speaker...no workie....Odin...no workie....roms....no work....
My wife and I gave up and called sprint, went to a store, they swappedthe entire piece that houses the screen and earpiece and it works now!! This is great! Lol the Guy told me they couldn't swap the speaker, I kept my mouth shut. No insurance, over 1 year of owning the phone...$35 got it fixed, and they dropped a new keyboard in as my wife somehow sheared #4 key off. Good day. She's rocking stock ec05 til she gets frustrated w battery life again lmao.

Blown speaker?

My speaker sounds like it might be blown... it was working fine and then started acting up. I haven't done anything to cause it that I know of, I have my phone on vibrate 98% of the time. Is it a possible software issue?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Speaker was blown and I got it replaced at a local repair center. According to the tech, it was a combination of a blown speaker and a "known" software issue with gingerbread (ef02). The last part is obviously bs, I was on eb13 (srf 1.1.1) and odin'd to ef02 so I was stock when I took it in so they wouldn't cry that my modifications ruined the speaker.

the epic speaker is crap im soon to blow mine as i blare the music all the time when i take a shower lol
Be sure that you're not experiencing the audio routing bug caused by bluetooth where all audio gets routed through the ear speaker. It happened to me and at first I thought the main external speaker was blown. Only takes a reboot to fix but is the worst Froyo bug IMO and I sure hope 2.3 fixes it.
It had been re booted a few times and had a fresh flash. I hardly used the thing i was on vibrate at least 98% of the time

Crack sound from internal speaker

Hello,
I use Virtuos 1.27 on my DHD with recommended radio.
My problem is when i am in a call the internal speaker sounds cracked. I have to lower volume alot to get rid of it. Is it possible that rils+radio have made this?
I read that Volume apk boost the volume but it was longtime since i used it. Is there any revert to default speaker settings?
External speaker is good.
Tips on how to check if its really broken?

I had the same thing a while back, even on the lowest volume setting it sounded awful. A quick search of the forums found people suggesting blowing / sucking where the speaker grill is. In desperation I gave it a try and it worked! Search the forum for more detailed instructions on what to do.
Haha suck the phone....really?

I know, it sounds ridiculous, but try it.
Here's the original post I found about it

I have the same problem... second time around....
but mine completely shuts off randomly and then activates again randomly...
First time it occured i had a week or so left on warranty, shipped the phone to workshop and they replaced the internal speaker, i did not reset the htc firmware from ARHD and they repaired it on goodwill since i didnt have the original software. my warranty expired, now 5 weeks later the exact same problem appears... i tried blowing and sucking the speaker (boy did it make me feel like a retard) but without results... im thinking i could try flashing the original rom but the realist in me says thats only the optimist in me thinking... does anyone have any advice on this matter ? thank you
I had the same problem and I got my phone exchanged.
The new one works fine.
Not sure you can fix it yourself.
I took my desire hd apart last night. and you would not believe the crap that gets in there. I had a ton of metal particles on both my speakers I cleaned them off and it sounds so much better. Just watch the teardown video on youtube.
I had the same problem with cracked sound, and blowing/sucking helped me

[Q] No sound during calls

Yesterday my Epic 4G stopped outputting any sound during phone calls and I've confirmed that it doesn't transmit anything that I'm saying to the other person either. However, if I plug in a speaker to the headphone jack it will play the sound from the call through that but still will not transmit my voice through the call. All other sound output works just fine, including notifications and music.
This has been happening on and off for a week or so and a reboot has been fixing it until yesterday. Since then I've rebooted multiple times, re-flashed SRF 1.2 with data wipes, and flashed the Genocide 1.1 kernel (was using Twilight before). The problem has persisted through that.
Any tips, or does this sound like a hardware/take it to the Sprint store?
Note: likely related, two weeks ago I got a new sound system in my car with an auxiliary input so I've been unplugging/plugging in the auxiliary cord for the sound system fairly often since then. Could this added stress on the headphone jack have caused this?
Also, I noticed that the phone no longer seems to sense my proximity and turn the screen black when I hold it up to my ear during a call. Before, when I held the phone to my ear during a call it would sense me and turn the screen off, now the screen just stays on.
I would Odin to stock EC05 and see if the problems still exist and if so then go to the Sprint store. Do not restore any data. Test it with fresh stock. Corrupted data can cause this as well as hardware malfunction so make sure it is not data.

Gotcha, thanks. Will try in a few days when my Blackberry cable arrives from Amazon. That also makes a lot of sense as I would want to go back to stock before taking it to the sprint store anyway.
Thanks again.

No problem. It is always a quick way of isolating the problem. I lost all 4G capability and could not figure out why. Turns out there was something corrupt in my WiMax data. Odin'd in a stock tar and all fixed, restored data and broke again. So figured there was something corrupt there.

Dang, Odined to stock EC05 and it still doesn't work. Planning to take it to the store this afternoon unless someone has something else I should try.
Not sure when you got the device (Seems to be newer ones)... But it sounds like the headphone\mic jack switch may be busted. Same happened to me not too long back and they traded me in for EVO 3D because the Epic was on back order.
Definitely take it in to get looked at, as it's most likely not your fault, and you might end up with a free upgrade!
yeah I think you might be onto something there.. I'm guessing with all the unplugging/plugging into the headphone jack that I do that it finally just had too much stress. It's stopped even recognizing that headphones are plugged in at this point. The phone is about 10.5 months old if that tells you anything.

Well i do know that the hardware on the original Epics was a bit more reliable. I had mine from release day, and I still have it. lol Screen's a bit shattered which is why TEP gave me a replacement on my "lost" phone... But the new one i got had the headphone jack issue. Same happened with my girl's newer model. Anywho, when you're unplugging the headphones make sure you're not like twisting in anyway... and don't pull at an angle. Straight outward. Just a good rule of thumb for future phones... taken from a life lesson of mine. lol

[Q] Ear speaker not working post-screen replacement

I got my broken screen replaced today, and the ear speaker was working as intended prior to the repair. Now I've got it home, was putting it thru it's paces when I realized I could not hear any calls. The external speaker works just fine, but that's it. Is there something they forgot to reconnect? This is moderately frustrating and I'd like to see if I can solve it on my own tonight before I have to drive back down there tomorrow afternoon. Any help would be appreciated.
You're not gonna be able to fix it on your own.
Did you get anything resolved? From what I remember when I replaced my digitizer, you need to disconnect like 5 ribbon cables. But I don't remember if one went to the speaker you are taking about.

I think my rear speaker broke.

This is freaking me out because it happened a day after flashing to a new ROM.
Last night I flashed from stock EL29 to AOKP (build 32), everything was fine. Used the phone all night and all this morning. Listened to music with a wired headset for a couple of hours. When I got home from work I noticed that all my touch sounds/ringers/alerts/media sounds weren't playing. Anything that played through the rear speaker was silent regardless of volume level.
I wiped and reflashed AOKP. Nothing. Wiped and reverted to stock EL29. Nothing.
I'm starting to think that it wasn't the ROM and that the speaker or connections just died. Any advice or help for this situation? I'm thinking I'm going to take a peek inside just to check the connections.
Did u make sure its not thinking the headset is still plugged in? I've seen issues where the headset jack goes haywire and thinks its got a plug in it when it really doesnt

Got it working. What I did for anyone having a similar problem:
I dismantled the thing and I found the speaker contacts were corroded. Downside of living in a tropical climate I guess. A little cotton and alcohol to clean them up and the darn thing is working now. Took the opportunity to check all the other major contact points, all is right with the world.
