Hello,
I use Virtuos 1.27 on my DHD with recommended radio.
My problem is when i am in a call the internal speaker sounds cracked. I have to lower volume alot to get rid of it. Is it possible that rils+radio have made this?
I read that Volume apk boost the volume but it was longtime since i used it. Is there any revert to default speaker settings?
External speaker is good.
Tips on how to check if its really broken?

I had the same thing a while back, even on the lowest volume setting it sounded awful. A quick search of the forums found people suggesting blowing / sucking where the speaker grill is. In desperation I gave it a try and it worked! Search the forum for more detailed instructions on what to do.
Haha suck the phone....really?

I know, it sounds ridiculous, but try it.
Here's the original post I found about it

I have the same problem... second time around....
but mine completely shuts off randomly and then activates again randomly...
First time it occured i had a week or so left on warranty, shipped the phone to workshop and they replaced the internal speaker, i did not reset the htc firmware from ARHD and they repaired it on goodwill since i didnt have the original software. my warranty expired, now 5 weeks later the exact same problem appears... i tried blowing and sucking the speaker (boy did it make me feel like a retard) but without results... im thinking i could try flashing the original rom but the realist in me says thats only the optimist in me thinking... does anyone have any advice on this matter ? thank you
I had the same problem and I got my phone exchanged.
The new one works fine.
Not sure you can fix it yourself.
I took my desire hd apart last night. and you would not believe the crap that gets in there. I had a ton of metal particles on both my speakers I cleaned them off and it sounds so much better. Just watch the teardown video on youtube.
I had the same problem with cracked sound, and blowing/sucking helped me

Hello , i recently bought the Desire HD, and havent been experiencing any problems with it except of one quite annoying.
When im in a call, either outgoing or incoming, the speaker makes a weird crackling noise.
This happens always, and happens on both the phones speaker, and loud speaker (depending on which is selected during call), and headphones(when connected). Ive searched the forum, and some people have been experiencing a sort of problem, but not on the same device.
any help is very much appreciated thank you
I can verify that I'm experiencing the same with my Desire HD.
We discussed this issue already in the german "Android-Hilfe"-Forum. This buzzing, crackling noise seems to affect a small number of desire HD's. Mine was affected too. All the devices have been changed on warranty with no costs for the customer in germany. No matter from which provider they were bought.
Edit: BTW: Wrong Forum, I think. Could an Admin move this thread please?
Thanks for the quick replies guys, appreciate it
Hi All,
My Desire HD has started doing this today too! Really gutted. What has HTC UK support been like this on it? Replacement or repair, and how quick? I dont want to be without a phone long! Is this a widely recognised problem, apart from this thread I dont see much on it. Im wondering if the buzz comes from a loose LED flash cover vibrating caused by the speaker?
Thanks very much
I have the same and I thought it is the proximity sensor opening and closing.
Are you guys sending it back for replacement or are you going to live with it?
i have the same problem it sounds like the earpice is short circuiting for 1/10 second
i dont know is it a general problem or only limitted to our handsets
and if we update the radio version is it going to disappear or not
any help is appreciated

I sent 2 support cases to HTC at the same time. The one was for tjis issue and the other for something else. The other one was answered next day but for that one, not a word. Does this tell you something?

I say that: I contacted HTC support in regards to this but haven't received a reply. But, I have received replys for other cases. And this doesn't sound good.
i have the same issue
Issue with noise
I recently replaced my DHD due to a similar issue. I found if my hand palm was making contact at all with the SIM.SD Card cover, ie the antenna I would get an extremely high pitch feedback sound. Also if phone was on charge the crackle sound was audible.
Orange were great and replaced the original handset straight away at no cost but the replacement also appears to have the same issue. For the moment I'm considering contacting HTC direct but i'm not sure as otherwise I love the phone, and truly believe it is the best on the market.
I think the issue might be resolved if i get a outer protective cover so I'm going to try that first, and not use the device while on charge.
Would be good to know if others have had these experiences.

Whatever you decide, contact HTC so that they know and work on the problem. As I said, I contacted them but never received a reply which means that they are aware and have no solution.

That must be a different issue. I hear that noise via BT headset when I don't even touch the phone. I believe it's due to the sound frequency change during a call and the low quality speaker cannot handle. It's like using a high wattage amplifier on a low quality speaker and expect to hear deep bass sound. I guess you all know the result of such sound.
I'm also experiencing this problem. Sent the phone in and got it back but the problem is still there. They changed the motherboard and the loudspeaker but that obviously didn't fix the problem. So now I probably have to send it back again.
i just hope this problem can be fixed with software..
hi all,
in my case occasionally during call's even whit sound volume low a ear the person talking with " extremely high pitch feedback sound".
It's a very good phone but that problem is starting to annoying me.
i allready send a email to htc portugal and their response was to send the equipment to the repair center
in you opion what should i do? send to repair?
Thanks
Have you tried enabling the SRS improvement? It can be done in the music player. It made the crackling sound during calls in my device disappear...

I will try this and post back...
What I'm experiencing, when I'm on hold with my service provider (Vodafone AU) I can hear the normal on hold music then at random intervals just for a half a second or so the music cuts and there's an annoying crackle noise. Sometimes there is no noise for a while then there can all of a sudden there can that crackle noise every few seconds. Like another person has said for me if I change to loudspeaker it still does the crackle noises and turning the volume down doesn't help. I've tried taking my hand off the phone but it still happens. I have noticed a few times the reception bars icon, drop a bar or gain a bar when this noise happens so maybe there's a link?!? By the way I'm running LeeDroid 1.4.1 (wich is based on HTC's 1.72.405.3 ROM). Also I'm running the Jan 17th Radio version: 12.39.60.19U_26.06.04.06_M.
Right. This could well sound daft but try it anyway! Someone on another forum said it worked for him (her?) and it worked for me with a Nokia E71. The speaker was 'crackling' so I did the usual googling. The answer was, for me, to suck really hard on the speaker a couple of times. Basically the diaphragm gets put out of place and the 'sucking' gets it back.
Try it and see! Though it won't fix the 'feedback-type' noises I'd guess but I find most of those are specific to a particular call. Either call back, or get them to call you back, and all is well.

Hi. try flashing back the stock rom. If still same prob, then and take it back frm where you bought it. They should fix under waranty, or exch it. it may be faulty
btw did the issue started happening after u flashed a custom rom?
I had the same problem...
...searched all over trying to find a solution relating to Desire HD but eventually found my answer in a thread relating to an older HTC phone.
I doubt I'd find it again so I can't give the credit where it's deserved but the poster suggested a couple of possible causes and solutions as I recall;
1. The speaker in the earpiece naturally contains a magnet and could over time pick up bits of metal fragments (swarf) from dust, in your pocket, off tables, etc. He suggested using a stronger magnet to stroke it off perhaps, or even easier (and perhaps safer for other components) just blow!
2. The speaker will have a thin plastic diaphragm that resonates to form the sound. If this becomes malformed somehow it will produce crackling/tinny noise and poor volume. The solution here is to close your mouth over the earpiece and either blow or suck If one doesn't work then try the other and test again.
Sounds comical I know(!), but it worked for me. I can't remember if it was blowing or sucking in my case but I was very glad I had avoided having to go through customer services and being without my phone. Instant fix and it's been fine since.
Like I said, this isn't Desire HD specific advice - it could happen to any cellphone really. I hope you have the same joy as I did ;-)
Funny but it works!
I was just going to unroot and return my Desire Z Vision to stock, and try to get it fixed under warranty. What a hassle!
I'm not sure whether the blowing or the sucking was it, but it fixed the terrible sound distortion coming from the phone earpiece speaker at higher than minimum in-call volumes.
Thanks so much! I love the XDA community!

To me I have tried blow trick but it messed up the ear piece more. But there is no way you going to loose the sound unless you drop the phone , try the magnet trick or using a vacuum cleaner ( I was once thinking of doing that ) try to re flash your DHD may be it will help and try to go with stock Rom first with mod kernel .

Hi, I am on a t-mobile branded stock DHD which has never been rooted and the in call volume is amazingly low, I can barely hear people when I'm outside and most of the time I have to put it on speaker, I never had this problem with my n95 or bb 9780, can anyone help or offer any suggestions, is there a chance my handset could be faulty. Also does call quality improve in gingerbread as I am still awaiting that update.

HTC Desire HD weird sound from earpiece
Hey guys
I am experiencing something really weird. On my desire HD, when I start a call (make/receive) the sound is at max and is fine, after sometime the calls sound is all distorted as if the speaker is burst, once I lower the sound its fine i.e. <50%. If i keep my phone upside down for some time, the sound gets normal on the earpiece but again after sometime it gets distorted again.
What is going on? My speaker (earpiece) sounds okay for a few mins and then gets distorted, and after sometime it gets back to normal and then again distorted.. help me out guys i cant figure out and cant fix it.
I have tried:
1) Magnet in front of earpiece to pull out fragments of small metals on the speaker
2) Left the phone in an air tight jar with a dessicant on the earpiece
What next?

Maybe yes, but its like alright for a few mins, e.g. in a 10 min call, 6 min its fine, then its like something is gradually appearing on the speaker to make it sound bad, slowly and gradually the sound gets from OK to bad as if something is vibrating with the speaker.
What I dont understand is that how does it get okay after a few mins rest?
I live in Pakistan, no Official HTC Support here, everything is either smuggled or people order from abroad... If it fails its a pretty tough situation for me !
Last resort is to blow in the earpiece or to use the professional air spray blower, but none of these trials is curable, this info is from HTC support website, mine requires repair, or I can use it for gaming and chatting, in that way an itoutch is quite enough.
Actually it was a great "phone" but now it's just an itouch or game&watch, or may be elastic baloon according to the technician solution.
Thanks htc ... No more purchases

First off, I bough this phone used.
I testted out made calls and everything works fine.
But now that I just got home, and now messing with it a little bit more I notice there isn't much/no sound at all from my video recording.
I turn media sound up to max and screamed into the mic and i get a little sound out.
I don't think the mic is broken because people that I call can still hear me fine.
I"ve searched but I couldn't find any answer about this.
I don't know if the phone is rooted or not, first android phone

Lol at screaming into the mic. I'd try a factory reset (power phone off, hold vol down + power until bootloader comes up, then select factory reset) and see if that fixes it. If not then you could try rooting it if it isn't already (and it's most likely not) and run a custom ROM such as CM7. A simple way to know if it's rooted would be to open up you're app drawer and look for the superuser app. If you have it, then you're rooted. If you are, you can flash the recovery from within ROM Manager (which you can download from the market) and download a custom ROM from the Dev section on XDA and flash it.
There are guides all over the Dev Section on rooting the G2 and flashing custom ROM's. Look them up if you need help!
If that doesn't work, it's probably a hardware error.
Best of luck and welcome to Android!
Update:
We'll seems like the reason why my low volume for video recording maybe because it was water damage, seller never told me and the indicator sticker on the phone was removed...oh craigslist, i feel like a sucker
Oh well lesson learned, Maybe xda should have like a section for each phone to help us know or tell if a phone is water damage.
Like I found out today that inside the g2 have a stick and to the left is also an indicator and the batter itself has an indicator.
Oh well, what weird is that the mic for the phone works fine ie phone calls, so is there another mic for video recording?
thanks.

Oh boy. Gotta love Craigslist, right? Yeah, there's usually a sticker in the battery compartment of most phones and then there's one on the battery itself 'cause you really don't wanna put a water damaged battery in your phone as it could cause it to short. There are even stickers inside the phone's housing. I use to fix phones all the time (replacing screens, housings, digitizers, etc...) and in almost every phone I've opened up, there were multiple stickers inside. There was almost always one on the USB charge port.
As for the mic, i don't think there is another one made just for sound recording, unless someone can prove me wrong.
It might not even be your mics input but rather your speakers output. Did you test out playing music? Try playing a song or a ringtone and seeing if the volume is equally as low. If it is, then your speaker is the culprit. If water was indeed a factor here, then there is most likely corrosion built up on the leads of the motherboard. A cousin of mine dropped her droid incredible into a pool when we went swimming a while ago and I immediately scooped it out, pulled the battery, set it in a bag of dry rice to absorb any excess water, then opened the phone up. There was massive amounts of corrosion built up on the motherboard. After I took the board out of the phone and submerged it in Isopropyl alcohol and gently scrubbed it with a soft bristled tooth brush, I let it air dry and put the phone back together. Worked normally again.
Be very cautious if you decide to try it! (I personally would just let it be, lol)
Dont be hastey!!
I had this problem with mine but it wasn't due to damage of the phone it was because the noise reduction mic was blocked!!!!
At the top of the phone next to the headphone jack theres a tiny hole used for noise reduction, make sure this is 100% clear! I had to stick a little pin down it to clear mine out and sound in videos then worked perfect.

Hello all,
Earlier this week my earpiece suddenly stopped working and now I cannot hear anyone's voice when receiving/making calls (yes in-call volume is maxed out).
I am ec05 stock rooted running the genocide 2.0 kernel. I've been this way for about a month with absolutely no issues at all until this week.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Maybe the ear piece is broken

Tried doing a factory reset (should I have done a reset through Clockwork instead?). Nothing changed.
Gonna see if I can get a replacement from Radioshack since we have the warranty with them.
try turning speaker phone on /off while in call. my phone used to do that randomly sometimes.
Just tried that to no avail
Thanks though.
Odin back to straight stock and see if it works.
Had something similar happen to me. Installed one of those apps that adjusts the ringers and notifications etc and the problem vanished. My problem was intermittent though.

I just bought a new earpiece, keyboard, and Mic.
The Mic has always been garbage when using speaker phone. The person on the other end has problems hearing me when on speaker so hopefully that will fix it.
The #4 key was sheared off when the slide helper fell out...I already pulled it apart and set that back in place.
And then the damn ear piece quit working. I found one on eBay and am waiting on it to get here so I can pull it apart again and replace all this ****. I don't understand how all this stuff breaks AND I have to deal w unfinished software LOL. Glad It's my wife's phone hehe.
My new earpiece didn't correct the issue. I have tried everything from Odin to multiple roms. I give up. Lame. Very lame.
Update:
I have replaced the speaker...no workie....Odin...no workie....roms....no work....
My wife and I gave up and called sprint, went to a store, they swappedthe entire piece that houses the screen and earpiece and it works now!! This is great! Lol the Guy told me they couldn't swap the speaker, I kept my mouth shut. No insurance, over 1 year of owning the phone...$35 got it fixed, and they dropped a new keyboard in as my wife somehow sheared #4 key off. Good day. She's rocking stock ec05 til she gets frustrated w battery life again lmao.
Just got my brand new m8 and after using it a bit I noticed the top boomsound speaker wasnt working. Tried some basic troubleshooting and using it in different apps in no avail. I can hear someone in a phone call no problem though, but if I use the speakerphone or use the phone to play music or something like that it doesn't seem to be working (or maybe be extremely quiet??).
I haven't tweaked the phone yet in any way, completely stock Android 6.0 that it shipped with.
Edit: The top speaker works but it is much, much more quiet than the bottom.
I'm really hoping this is a software issue, any way I can test that out?
Bump. Can someone running marshmallow please test this out real quick for me? Play this on max volume and see if left is considerably quieter than right - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTvJoYnpeRQ
Thanks guys! Gotta love that over a hundred people that saw this and couldn't take about 30 seconds out of their day to try this out for me
Anyways I'm probably sending the phone back. Gonna have to go back to struggling with my old HTC One S while I wait for a replacement.
Actually I'm having a very similar issue.
My phone had perfect speakers since I got it but recently it fell face down and the display went boom! No cracks anywhere though.
The service guys replaced the display but now the top speaker had a very loud crackling, at the max volume level only, when playing deep bass, still loud.
So I take it to service again and this time they made the top speaker very very quiet but the crackling was gone.
I asked them to fix it but they said it's always been like that.
After struggling for some 15 minutes they agreed to look into it. They tell me that they've replaced the top speaker module but the sound is still low.
I can even test the issue using the help app, hardware diagnostics.
Now I don't know how to get it fixed.
