I think my rear speaker broke. - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

This is freaking me out because it happened a day after flashing to a new ROM.
Last night I flashed from stock EL29 to AOKP (build 32), everything was fine. Used the phone all night and all this morning. Listened to music with a wired headset for a couple of hours. When I got home from work I noticed that all my touch sounds/ringers/alerts/media sounds weren't playing. Anything that played through the rear speaker was silent regardless of volume level.
I wiped and reflashed AOKP. Nothing. Wiped and reverted to stock EL29. Nothing.
I'm starting to think that it wasn't the ROM and that the speaker or connections just died. Any advice or help for this situation? I'm thinking I'm going to take a peek inside just to check the connections.

Did u make sure its not thinking the headset is still plugged in? I've seen issues where the headset jack goes haywire and thinks its got a plug in it when it really doesnt

Got it working. What I did for anyone having a similar problem:
I dismantled the thing and I found the speaker contacts were corroded. Downside of living in a tropical climate I guess. A little cotton and alcohol to clean them up and the darn thing is working now. Took the opportunity to check all the other major contact points, all is right with the world.

No sound through earpiece during calls

Hello all,
Earlier this week my earpiece suddenly stopped working and now I cannot hear anyone's voice when receiving/making calls (yes in-call volume is maxed out).
I am ec05 stock rooted running the genocide 2.0 kernel. I've been this way for about a month with absolutely no issues at all until this week.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Maybe the ear piece is broken

Tried doing a factory reset (should I have done a reset through Clockwork instead?). Nothing changed.
Gonna see if I can get a replacement from Radioshack since we have the warranty with them.
try turning speaker phone on /off while in call. my phone used to do that randomly sometimes.
Just tried that to no avail
Thanks though.
Odin back to straight stock and see if it works.
Had something similar happen to me. Installed one of those apps that adjusts the ringers and notifications etc and the problem vanished. My problem was intermittent though.

Your ear piece is dead, go to sprint and its 35 bucks to get it replaced, I had to do it not even a month ago.

I just bought a new earpiece, keyboard, and Mic.
The Mic has always been garbage when using speaker phone. The person on the other end has problems hearing me when on speaker so hopefully that will fix it.
The #4 key was sheared off when the slide helper fell out...I already pulled it apart and set that back in place.
And then the damn ear piece quit working. I found one on eBay and am waiting on it to get here so I can pull it apart again and replace all this ****. I don't understand how all this stuff breaks AND I have to deal w unfinished software LOL. Glad It's my wife's phone hehe.
My new earpiece didn't correct the issue. I have tried everything from Odin to multiple roms. I give up. Lame. Very lame.
Update:
I have replaced the speaker...no workie....Odin...no workie....roms....no work....
My wife and I gave up and called sprint, went to a store, they swappedthe entire piece that houses the screen and earpiece and it works now!! This is great! Lol the Guy told me they couldn't swap the speaker, I kept my mouth shut. No insurance, over 1 year of owning the phone...$35 got it fixed, and they dropped a new keyboard in as my wife somehow sheared #4 key off. Good day. She's rocking stock ec05 til she gets frustrated w battery life again lmao.

[Q] No sound during calls

Yesterday my Epic 4G stopped outputting any sound during phone calls and I've confirmed that it doesn't transmit anything that I'm saying to the other person either. However, if I plug in a speaker to the headphone jack it will play the sound from the call through that but still will not transmit my voice through the call. All other sound output works just fine, including notifications and music.
This has been happening on and off for a week or so and a reboot has been fixing it until yesterday. Since then I've rebooted multiple times, re-flashed SRF 1.2 with data wipes, and flashed the Genocide 1.1 kernel (was using Twilight before). The problem has persisted through that.
Any tips, or does this sound like a hardware/take it to the Sprint store?
Note: likely related, two weeks ago I got a new sound system in my car with an auxiliary input so I've been unplugging/plugging in the auxiliary cord for the sound system fairly often since then. Could this added stress on the headphone jack have caused this?
Also, I noticed that the phone no longer seems to sense my proximity and turn the screen black when I hold it up to my ear during a call. Before, when I held the phone to my ear during a call it would sense me and turn the screen off, now the screen just stays on.
I would Odin to stock EC05 and see if the problems still exist and if so then go to the Sprint store. Do not restore any data. Test it with fresh stock. Corrupted data can cause this as well as hardware malfunction so make sure it is not data.

Gotcha, thanks. Will try in a few days when my Blackberry cable arrives from Amazon. That also makes a lot of sense as I would want to go back to stock before taking it to the sprint store anyway.
Thanks again.

No problem. It is always a quick way of isolating the problem. I lost all 4G capability and could not figure out why. Turns out there was something corrupt in my WiMax data. Odin'd in a stock tar and all fixed, restored data and broke again. So figured there was something corrupt there.

Dang, Odined to stock EC05 and it still doesn't work. Planning to take it to the store this afternoon unless someone has something else I should try.
Not sure when you got the device (Seems to be newer ones)... But it sounds like the headphone\mic jack switch may be busted. Same happened to me not too long back and they traded me in for EVO 3D because the Epic was on back order.
Definitely take it in to get looked at, as it's most likely not your fault, and you might end up with a free upgrade!
yeah I think you might be onto something there.. I'm guessing with all the unplugging/plugging into the headphone jack that I do that it finally just had too much stress. It's stopped even recognizing that headphones are plugged in at this point. The phone is about 10.5 months old if that tells you anything.

Well i do know that the hardware on the original Epics was a bit more reliable. I had mine from release day, and I still have it. lol Screen's a bit shattered which is why TEP gave me a replacement on my "lost" phone... But the new one i got had the headphone jack issue. Same happened with my girl's newer model. Anywho, when you're unplugging the headphones make sure you're not like twisting in anyway... and don't pull at an angle. Straight outward. Just a good rule of thumb for future phones... taken from a life lesson of mine. lol

Music clicks/pops.

Anyone had issues with music popping/clicking on your GSII? I'm using a middle of the road set of Klipsch IMAGE S4 earbuds and they always sound great except on this phone, also, my LG G2X doesn't do this with the headphones so I know they are fine. It's rather loud as well, like left my ears ringing loud. (Disabled DSP manager and it is still painfully loud)
For specifics, I'm using the newly released Google music, it's the only music player on my device. I have DSP manager installed on both of my phones.
Rom is Juggernaut 2.0 with the latest bullet Kernel but it did this before the Kernel.. and I'm 99% sure it happened before the root/rom and I just blew it off as the song.
I know it does this both on streamed music as well as music on the phone that i have confirmed is clean on other sources. (MP3 at 320kbps). I'm curious if this is just a me thing because I've also noticed a cycling stutter on my phone that wipes and new ROMS has not resolved. It's so faint you can barely notice it unless playing a game, ESPECIALLY the new Need for Speed Hot Pursuit. It'll do it's little stutter and by the time the game catches up your smeared all over a wall. Not a framerate issue at all as it's completely random and never seems to reoccur in the same place even when all other conditions are the exact same.
Anywho, thanks for reading and indulging me.
Noticed today but on stockmusic player, sounds like its.skipping

Happens to me too, I though it was just the music player I was using.

I was getting it often after going back to the stock kernel for better battery life, I did the above and it went back to normal.
It happens to me whenever i enable dsp manager and if i receive a notification when playing music

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the button control feature of the 4-pole 3.5mm jack in the phone. Personally, I don't use anything with buttons(headphones or the like), so I could do without it, but that's just what I've noticed.
Certain connections will do this on my phone. I can't plug my phone into the head unit on my saab without the music skipping like a mofo. But if I plug it in through my wife's mazda5 with the same cable, no problems.
I think maybe the 4-pole jack is just picking something up that isn't there.
Previous posters: Have you tried using different headphones to try and recreate the problem? I have a set of shure e2c's, some seinnheiser headphones, and some standard apple earphones and they all seem to work very well. The only connection problem I have is in my 2007 saab 9-3.

I personally have done this many times and it hasn't helped. It does it on the stock headphones that came with it as well as my stand alone headphones.
I went back to the stock kernel and it still does this, reflashed everything, same issue still.
As a side note I'm a bit OCD so every time I always clear everything, wipe data, etc. I'm very meticulous...to a fault.
Maybe use the stock rom, customs are useless..

I have used 3 different headphones, got same result until i disabled dsp manager
two headphones had buttons on them
I had it too. My issue was I didn't push the jack all the way into the phone. I don't know if that's anyone's issue here, but maybe it is. I was actually afraid of breaking the phone when I got it. I only pushed the jack until I felt resistance. I later realized I had to push hard enough to make it "click", and the bottom of the Jack touches the phone. There should be no gap in between.

I noticed this issue, but only when I was using a music player other than the stock or Google music ones. I've since only been using Google music.
Damn guys that sucks. Im on bullet kernel as well but have been using my phone to listen to hella EDM that's all in 320kbps and haven't noticed anything. Im actually using music playback in Google music right now... Still perfect. Ill try stock and post if i can reproduce the issue.
Sorry for posting even tho i don't have the issue... But music quality is very important to me and the functionality of my phone so i will keep a close eye on this thread especially since a few of you are running on bullet like me.
Who is using a ROM with this issue and who is not?
I for one am stock.

I listen to MOG all of the time, streaming and cached songs @ 320Kbps MP3 or 256 AAC and no popping. I did notice it after I went back to the stock kernel, it was happening every 30 seconds and it was very frustrating.
I've definitely noticed this issue using Pandora and less frequently in Spotify.
Well I've not had the issue in about a week, which is really odd. Normally I've had it at least once a day but not since the new Google music update. It may have been the old Leaked google music beta that caused it, after the update it hasn't happened.
I guess its resolved, not really sure but cautiously optimistic.
I will say this, the audio chipset in this phone leaves a LOT to be desired.

I was experiencing the same thing until I read your message and gave mine a good push to "click" it in and the pausing/skipping/popping completely stopped.
Thanks Bobby
Sometimes it's dust that gets in the headphone jack. I had the same problem years ago with my old Palm Pre and recently experienced it with my SG2 and fixed it doing the following:
1. Take a q-tip and rip most of the cotton off of one end so that there's just a slight film of cotton left on the tip.
2. Dip the stripped tip in alcohol and then squeeze out the excess alcohol (you want it moist not soaking).
3. With the phone OFF, stick the q-tip in the jack and spin it, which will effectively clean the jack of dust and any other debris.
4. Wait about 15 minutes for the alcohol inside the jack to evaporate, then turn on your phone and the problem should be gone.

[Q] Ear speaker not working post-screen replacement

I got my broken screen replaced today, and the ear speaker was working as intended prior to the repair. Now I've got it home, was putting it thru it's paces when I realized I could not hear any calls. The external speaker works just fine, but that's it. Is there something they forgot to reconnect? This is moderately frustrating and I'd like to see if I can solve it on my own tonight before I have to drive back down there tomorrow afternoon. Any help would be appreciated.
You're not gonna be able to fix it on your own.
Did you get anything resolved? From what I remember when I replaced my digitizer, you need to disconnect like 5 ribbon cables. But I don't remember if one went to the speaker you are taking about.

[Q] (Q) Very strange headphone issue

rooted running FreeGS3. Heres my question/issue. I am a very heavy user. From 830a to 5p my phone is in my pocket and I am using it to either talk or listen to music. Here's the odd part that Ive always had even before rooting. I use the stock earphones and they sound fantastic up to around 1p. Its odd but pretty consistent. Right around this time, no matter if Im talking or jamming out, the balance will just favor one side or the other. Actually one side might just be losing volume. Not real sure. Soon after that, total volume just drops off to a tenth of what i had at 830a. If i switch headphones, which a do carry(its my fix), everything returns to normal as soon as I plug in. Ive tried plugging stock headphones back in, after hearing the other set work, only to have same problem. Original phones will work fine next morning. Ive also tried switching headsets, 2nd set first, and guess what?? Right around 1p it still happens. I unplug, plug in stock headset, and everything works. Is there a static problem with the jack that just takes time to build up or something??? Anyone else have this issue??? Find it very strange.
