another brick question - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off, I apologies for asking what might be an apparently obvious question but I'm stuck
I've read that if you can do anything with your phone then its not bricked. Well I can't seem to get into bootloader, recovery or fastboot when I turn the phone on I always get a black screen with apostrophes in each corner and HTC in the middle.
I can issue fastboot commands through USB and I can run ruu's from the PC but they always fail at the end of writing system.
Problem is I'm trying to get a warrenty return (which is why I was unrooting) and the only time I see a different screen is after running the ruu and unplugging the USB. This gives me a white screen that shows alpharev and clearly gives the game away that the phones been rooted.
So is this technically a brick? And if not, is there a way put of this?

What hboot u have? Stock? Alpharev cm/oxygen?

It was/is alpharev cm (the second one)

Thanks, but how do I flash it if I can't get into recovery or anything or is it like the original alpharev thing?

OK thanks, so when I'm on the screen with just HTC on it I issue the fastboot command and then rerun the ruu?
Just to clarify (and perhaps help anyone else in this state), is this because of a change in alpharev that prevents the ruu changing tthe hboot? Because last time I returned my phone I followed the instructions that simple said to run the ruu so I'm presuming something has changed.

thanks for your help. All back up and running now.

[Q] Black screen with htc logo and 4 warning triangles

Right i'm a bit of a noob at all this and have got myself in a bit too deep!!!
The problems started after applying the CM7 hboot and s-off with aplpharev. (which seemed to go OK)
After applying a new rom i got stuck in a boot loop so tried other roms from recovery and had the same problem, Nandroid also wouldn't restore.
I then decide it would be best to flash an RUU which went tits up and has lead to the black screen with 4 triangles in each corner. I have tried several other RUUs but no luck either. I also cannot boot in to recovery at all now.
When i plug and unplug the device to a pc, it gives the following info:

Pluging it in returns it to the black screen
I have trawled the forums but nothing seems to work (i have resorted to creating a thread after 2 days of trying things!)
Any chance of an idiots guide from a guru on how to get the device usable again? (bearing in mind my reasonably limited knowledge!)
I know there are many threads on this already but i can't seem to find a fix that works.
Ta Much
Can't look into this too much right now but I'm pretty sure your RUU flash failed because you're using the r2 version of that HBOOT which has something in it that prevents it from being over-written by the RUU. Try flashing the Downgrader HBOOT and then give the RUU a shot. Should get you back to stock.
Also, move this to the Q&A thread.
Boot in to fastboot then
plug in usb
Then run ruu. As administrator if you have windows 7/vista
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I have same problem two days ago. Mine stuck at CM7 r2 partition while RUU need 250MB of system partition. After fighting around 4hours then I try to to flash HBOOT downgrader and then flash stock HBOOT then run RUU again.
Once alive I am rooting it again again and flash custom rom since I am not satisfied with original rom hahaha..
Sorry for my bad english.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
You just need to flash the downgrader hboot to flash the ruu.. And only if you are using one of the new r2 hboots. The ruu will over write the hboot so no point in flashing the downgrader and then the stock.

Just unplugged, plugged back in and re-ran ruu then everything was ok.

try to cool down your device and flash again...

i put my device without battery in fridge for 5 minutes, then i flash again and it works.
if the device warms up it stop working.

Is this all you have done?
There are tons of things to try!
Go into the recovery and delete all cache, try boot
Re-run the Revolutionary tool, try boot.
Try the alpharev 1.8 flasher http://alpharev.nl/ to try to downgrade with the bravo_downgrade.img
If this hboot-flash succeeds you may be able to run any ruu again, try Froyo.
This was just a couple of thing that crossed my mind, search this and other forums.

[Q] Phone won't boot past the HTC logo screen!

Heya! I tried to go back to Stock completely. And probably messed up big time... I simply downloaded a Europe RUU from Shipped Roms and installed it on my Desire.
This is the RUU I downloaded: http://www.shipped-roms.com/downloa...io_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_release_121684.exe
My HTC Desire is from Denmark, in Europe, if that matters
So, it seems like everything was installed correctly and it ended saying that it'd reboot my phone, but now it doesn't get past the logo.
I try to boot into bootloader (I think it's called? ), the power + vol down, and I can get into that. But I can't fastboot or boot into recovery... So not sure what to do from there...
I've used unRevoked to s-off and root my phone. I've been running CM7 till now.
Please help

Try with 2.3 RUU, or try bortak's guide.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA
Bortak's guide? Do you have a link? EDIT: I was looking at this; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275632 - but I can't see what stage my phone would be at.. :/
- As I said, it won't get past the HTC logo, so the computer won't recognize it. I can't install a new RUU, I tried... :/
I don't know where I can find v. 2.3 either, I couldn't see it on shipped roms
As I said, I am stuck at the HTC screen, but I can load it up into bootloader, and when I try to go to Recovery, it just starts up at the HTC screen again, stuck.
First post hboot/fastboot screen info
2) was phone s-off prior RUU?
3) Is your phone recognised in fastboot mode via USB cable? -boot phone power+back button to fastboot, connect USB cable and run in cmd or terminal "fastboot devices" without quotes-bear in mind htc sync must be uninstalled and unrevoked drivers installed.

HBOOT USB PLUG
then the menu.
I get the Android Bootloader Interface pop-up on my computer when I plug it in in Bootloader.
I have uninstalled HTC Sync, but not sure if my UNrevoked drivers are still installed. Trying the power down + back button, this is in power + vol down.
When I have it in fastboot (Went from the power + vol down to the fastboot option.) it pops up as "My HTC" in my device management (I'm on Windows 7 64-bit)
It says that fastboot is an unrecognized program when I try to run it from CMD.
My desire says "FASTBOOT USB", surrounded by red color.
Have you downloaded fastboot? Go to bortak's guide and download it from resources, fastboot.zip

I was struck in this same situation about a month ago. First of all My desire was S-OFF with stock hboot at that time. This is what i did at that time:laugh:
You need to go to alpharev site and download the Bravo Downgrader. Download Fastboot commander from the forum. And boot your desire in fastboot mode and connect it to pc. And flash the bravo downgrader file via fastboot commander. And then you can install any RUU assuming your desire is unbranded if not you need to make a goldcard.
Hope this helps.

[Q] HTC Desire boot up issue

Hi All,
I have been asked by a friend to have a look at their Desire which isn't booting up, i've tried searching the forums but am at a bit of a dead end.
Basically when powering up the phone it goes to a white screen with the green htc logo and stays like this indefinitely.
I can however boot into HBOOT and it gives me the following info:
BRAVO PVT3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-1.02.0001
MICROP-051d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.17.05.23

HBOOT
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
When I try to boot into RECOVERY it goes back to the white screen with htc logo.
When I try CLEAR STORAGE the problem remains.
I can go into FASTBOOT and this does change to FASTBOOT USB when I plug it into the USB port.
So because it's S-ON this means I can't push a recovery image via command prompt right?
I've tried downloading: RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.14_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_224699_signed.exe from shipped-roms.com, extracting ROM.zip and changing the name to PB99IMG.ZIP and putting it into the root of my sd cards (4GB and 16GB kingstons) but when I boot the phone into HBOOT i get the following:
SD Checking...
Loading...[PB99DIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading...[PB99DIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading...[PB99IMG.zip]
and a progress bar loads, then
Checking..[PB99IMG.zip]
followed by the following message:
CID incorrect!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> Yes
<VOL DOWN> No
I've tried turning my SD card into a gold card but I presume this has failed if I'm getting that message?
Has anybody got any pointers? Is the phone bricked?
Any help is much appreciated...

OK, I think I've successfully created the goldcard now, was using the wrong CID!
I transferred the same PB99IMG.zip to the root of the goldcard and booted into HBOOT. It loaded again and failed with the following message:
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> Yes
<VOL DOWN> No
What does this mean? Am I using the wrong PB99IMG.zip or something?
Is there any way to actually check that the creation of the goldcard was successful? Or does the fact that this is a different message mean that it's passed the CID check?

Cheers, so how do I get from where I am now to flashing a custom ROM?
I see from the 1st link you posted it says (if phone is S-ON):
S-ON
"I'm S-ON, I can't boot recovery, and my phone doesn't boot "
This is a bit of a worse situation, as you cannot flash system critical parts such as the recovery image and just restore a backup. This unfortunately means that you will lose all of your data when you attempt to fix the phone.
[STEP1]- Make sure that you have a goldcard. If not, create one from the tutorial.
[STEP2]- Battery pull. Hold the BACK button and the POWER button to boot into FASTBOOT mode.
[STEP3]- Download the latest WWE RUU from here
[STEP4]- Run the RUU and wait for completion WARNING: DO NOT, BY ANY CIRCUMSTANCES INTERRUPT THE PROCESS - THIS WILL MORE THAN LIKELY END UP WITH A BRICKED PHONE - NOT EVEN IF GOD HIMSELF TELLS YOU TO DO SO, OR IF THE US PRESIDENT THREATENS YOU WITH THERMO-NUCLEAR WAR
[STEP5]- Once the phone is booted, you are now returned completely to stock. You will need to re-root again, and I'd recommend S-OFF
Not sure about step 4 here?
that ruu is an exe file so with ur phone plugged in via usb just run the file (double click it) on ur computer. just follow all bortaks instructions
and ur goldcard works its fine

OK, I ran the 2.3 RUU and it seemed to do the trick. I could then turn the phone on but it seems a lot slower than I'm used to.
I've now rooted it and have S-OFF using revolutionary. Now it boots OK most of the time but as soon as I enter my PIN to unlock the SIM it reboots, and half the time when it reboots it seems to get stuck in a boot loop and gets quite warm.
I have a feeling there may be some underlying hardware issue at the heart of this problem.
Will try a custom ROM next and see if it makes any difference.

I did a very, very stupid thing. Help!?

Sending back my Desire to HTC for repair due to constant rebooting issues. Wanted to put stock ROM back on, unroot and S-ON it but somehow managed to be a total retard and just ran the RUU relevant to my phone. Having rooted it and going through several custom ROMs previously (most recently supreme1.2), I am disappointed that I didn't use my brain in this case, and now I have to salvage it.

I can boot into either HBOOT or FASTBOOT, however it will not boot into recovery. I have used both methods listed for S-OFF in [2]: ADVANCED BOOT PROBLEMS in bortak's troubleshooting thread (why didn't I start by reading the forums!), both claiming to be successful, however I still cannot boot into recovery.
I would very much appreciate any help. I am hoping that the fact I can boot to FASTBOOT of HBOOT will allow me to somehow fix this, but so far I have been unable to work out how.

I was looking at running the downgrader but hadn't gotten round to it yet. I will give that a go. Is the 2.3 RUU you mention available on shippedroms do you know?
Yes it is, but I heard a few problems that people had with version from shipped roms. In my signature you have the explanation how to get it from htcdev.
Yeah, I did those things and I now have a fully functional unrooted s-on desire, that crashes intermittently all the freaking time. Just like before!
Gonna send it back to HTC, wasn't keen on this line of the email they sent me "Bear in mind though, should our engineers determine that the fault you are experiencing is caused by physical damage, wear and tear or illegal software, it will not be covered by warranty." mind.
We shall see what happens. Thanks for the help though.
Don't worry, I sent mine 2 week ago, but because of buttons. I just flashed 2.3 with downgrader, got s-on, and got my phone repaired in warranty.

If you have Alpharev or Revolutionary hboot with stock partition layout it is write protected and if you run ruu you will have your phine working properly but you will still have the same hboot and s-off, also the radio won't be overwritten.
So, if you're sending your phone to HTC with warranty s-on is inevitable.
