so i have it on my phone and everything but when its in the boot screen its saying that the img files arent there i dont know what im doing wrong
did you put the file on the root of the card? is there two .zip extensions?
which two files? what are the links? I just want to make sure i got the right ones and which folder is the root of the phone?
/mnt/sdcard
any file in there would be in the root of your sd card
yea i put everything on that but my phone keeps on saying it dosent find the images what are the links for those images? sorry
What step in the root process are you exactly? Why are you trying to flash something in the bootloader?
im on the processes where my phone is suppose to find this PC36IMG.zip
The best way to flash recovery after revolutionary use is via fastboot.i downloaded the fastboot HTC drivers, theyre listed on revolutionary wiki. Placed the recovery.img in tge same folder as the fastboot,at least thats what I did, then I issued fastboot flash recovery recovery.img via Command line in windows.you have to boot into bootloader/HBoot mode, and wait for it to scan then click the power button once to get to fastboot usb.thats on windows...hope this helps.
Evo 4G Synergy RC2
yea idk fastboot is not reading the zip or image file i have no idea why
what zip are you trying to flash and where did you download it from? according to the guides for revolutionary, you do not need to flash a pc36img in hboot.
Its not a zip its an img file.youre directly overwriting recovery via fastboot.you issue those commands from your computer not your phone.theres a thread here on xda that tells the process more in detail..if I can find it ill link yoy
Evo 4G Synergy RC2
What recovery are you running? Clockwork? And did you install it with revolutionary? If you did all you have to do is
1. boot into the boot loader (power off pull the battery power on with volume down)
2. Select recovery (This will reboot the phone and you will be brought into recovery mode).
3. When you get to clockwork, select install zip from sdcard.
4. Choose zip from sdcard and select your zip file thats on the root of the sdcard.
5. It should then go through a list of things while it installs.
The zip for root can be found here (this is the link from the install page):
http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip
To Install clockwork you need to download
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.5-supersonic.img
The rename it to:
PC36IMG.zip
Boot into recovery and it should attempt to install it. NOTE This will only work if you have s-Off and have run revolutionary.
This can also be done with AR.
@tnerb once s-off is there you have to flash CWM or other custom recovery via fastboot first.then you flash the superuser zip via custom recovery

Quick question does any one know where I can find the recovery that was downloaded to my phone when I used the revolutionary root method? I need that exact recovery to restore my original nand and me being an idiot I didn't make another nand with Amon after I flashed it.

Hi,
I have CWM to 2.0.2.4 recovery and i want to install 2.5.0.7, so how do install it, just download the .zip of 2.5.0.7 and update it via cwm or is there any other procedure??
I think if you flash it through recovery, it will only do a "fake flash", so it will run once but not be written to the memory. You need to go into fastboot, connect to your pc via usb, then enter "fastboot flash recovery xxxxx.img" (where the last bit is the name if the recovery file you downloaded. If it's a zip, extract the img from the zip first.

hey that procedure will work only when i am s-off right??

First thing you need to know is that no matter what happens, even if your phone is abducted by rabid kittens, I am not responsible for your actions. Second is that you just voided your warranty, no doubt about it. HTC has your serial number with record that you unlocked your bootloader. Thanks to JAS_21 for the idea for making this guide. So, the next things you are going to want to do are to flash clockworkmod recovery, and then su. Then you can flash a ROM. Let's start with clockworkmod.
You want to get the android-sdk working, which you can find a guide to here.. Then you want to go to this thread. Download the file attached to the post. Use winzip if you have windows or just click on it on mac to unzip the file. Plug your phone into your computer and select "charge only" mode. Copy the cwm img file to the tools folder of the android SDK. Now, it's time to open up ADB. Open up a command prompt on windows or a terminal window on Mac/Linux. Follow these commands.
Code:
cd [insert location of android-sdk here]/platform-tools
adb reboot bootloader
You should now see Fastboot USB on your phone. Open a new command or terminal window. Type the following:
Code:
cd [insert location of android-sdk here]/tools
fastboot flash recovery cwm-recovery-vivow.img
fastboot reboot
Congrats, you have now flashed clockworkmod recovery. Now, onto installing root access. Next, grab the su zip attached to the OP of this thread. Plug your phone into your computer and select "disk drive" mode. Copy the su zip file to the root of your sd card. Unmount your sd card and select "charge only" mode on your computer. Reboot into recovery. The easiest way is probably to open up a command window and type:
Code:
cd [insert location of android-sdk here]/platform-tools
adb reboot recovery
When your phone is in recovery, click "install zip from sd card," then "choose zip from sd card," then the su zip file. Hit the back button once. Then select reboot system now. When your phone reboots, download superuser from the market. Now you are ready to use root apps! If you want to flash a ROM, continue on.
Download the ROM of your choice. If you want to, use my guide for choosing a ROM found here. Download the ROM zip file. Plug your phone into your computer and select "disk drive" mode. Copy the rom zip file to the root of your sd card. Don't unmount your sd card yet.Next, make a copy and put it on your desktop. Use winzip on windows or just click on mac/linux to unzip the rom file. In the root of the ROM, you should see a boot.img file. Copy that to your tools folder of your android-sdk folder. Now, unmount your sd card and select "charge only" mode on your computer. Next, follow the following steps.
Before installing the ROM...
1. Download Titanium Backup from the market, allow superuser permissions, then click menu>batch>backup all user apps.
2. Make sure fastboot is off in settings>power.
3. Put the ROM zip on the root of your SD Card
4. Download SMS Backup and Restore, and backup your SMS.
5. Back up your contacts by checking "back up my data" or something like that under settings/privacy.
How to install the ROM...
1. Turn off phone, and hold power and volume down until you get a white screen that says Hboot.
2.Volume down/up is for scrolling; power is for selecting.
3. Scroll down and select RECOVERY.
4. Scroll down and selected BACKUP AND RESTORE.
5. Select BACKUP and wait for it to finish.
6. Hit the back button to go back to the main menu.
7. Scroll down and select WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET.
8. Scroll down and select WIPE CACHE PARTITION.
9.Hit the back button to go back to the main menu.
10. Scroll down and select ADVANCED, then WIPE DALVIK CACHE.
11. Hit the back button to go back to the main menu.
12. Scroll down and select INSTALL ZIP FROM SD CARD, then CHOOSE ZIP FROM SD CARD, then whatever the ROM zip is.
13. Let it do its thing. This may take 5-10 minutes. DON'T PULL THE BATTERY.
Next, it is time to flash your boot image. Follow these commands.
Code:
cd [insert location of android-sdk here]/platform-tools
adb reboot bootloader
You should now see Fastboot USB on your phone. Open a new command or terminal window. Type the following:
Code:
cd [insert location of android-sdk here]/tools
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot
You are done with flashing the ROM now, congrats. To get your data back, follow the steps!
1. Run the initial setup. When you're setting up your google account, make sure the "keep data backed up" or whatever box is checked. This will make sure to restore your/keep your contacts backed up.
2. Redownload Titanium Backup. Hit menu/batch/restore missing apps with data.
3. Redownload SMS B+R. Restore your SMS.
4. Enjoy your new ROM!
I hope this guide clears things up for some people. If you have ideas or suggestions for this guide or others, feel free to comment. If I helped you, please hit the thanks button. I would really appreciate it!

Had the same issue but solved after looking over the instructions for doing this if you were downgrading. Instead of placing the image file on the root of your sd card, place it in the folder that contains fastboot in your android sdk. Do that and you will be able to flash it and continue with the instructions.
Oh wow. You guys are right. That's a typo. I'll fix that.

When I try to flash the boot.img at the last step, it says error: Cannot load 'boot.img'. I tried to start the phone and it sticks as the htc splash screen ... any ideas?
Did you put it in the sdk tools folder?
just wondering...am i going to have to flash the su zip everytime i flash a new rom? Just flashed miui and when I superuser was not on the list of apps. I downloaded it, but have this feeling its not going to work until a flash su.zip
Nope, cuz most roms are already rooted.
I was having trouble getting my ADB to function correctly, so I went with the manual "update.zip" method to flash Clockwork. However, when HBOOT recognizes the PG32IMG.zip file, it just says its "Checking.." forever, and I don't know whether it's working or frozen up. How long is that part supposed to take? I'm so close!
Thanks for this post. Helpful and easy to follow!
frick frack and frick. Now my phone isn't recognized by my computer. Had zero issues with this before. I'm running the latest version of miui and cant get the phone recognized.

Should i relock the phone, forget this guide, and use attn1's guide?
I already installed ClockworkMod 5.5 and CM7.2 nightlies, everything works unless i have to reboot then it loses the boot image. Any thoughts?

edit: It was because of S-ON. I relocked my phone and used attn1's guide to bring the phone back to hboot 0.97 and then s-off. This guide is not useful it seems if you want to go AOSP.

1. True S-OFF is a permanent type of S-OFF. There are ways to do it temporarily. It looks like yours is perm S-OFF.
2. From the instructions that you followed, did you have to put a PC10IMG file onto the root of your SD card? If that file is still there, the bootloader will always look to that file and not allow anything else to be done.
3. Clockwork Mod will not show in an apps list. It replaces the recovery of your phone. It is not an app. As for ROM manager, I'm not sure what to tell you. Maybe if you can pull logs from your phone we can work on that.
4. Just because S-OFF shows up does not mean you are rooted. If you flashed the stock T-Mobile ROM then chances are you lost root privileges. You can do a quick check by looking in your app drawer for the "Superuser" app. If it is there, you are still rooted. If not, most likely you are not.
Oh! your smart…Yes PC10IMG is still on SD card.
As is superuser.apk and clockworkmod and titamium backup
"Superuser" app is not in app drawer
how would i pull the logs
take the image off sd card and you will be allowed back into recovery, then do a full wipe and flash rom of choice via recovery

need to flash a custom recovery again via fastboot. get the .img from somewhere in xda (or google it)
put recovery.img in the same folder as fastboot.exe on computer
connect your phone via usb and boot into fastboot
open cmd on computer change directories to where fastboot and recvoery image are
type fastboot devices (just to make sure its working)
then type

then
fastboot reboot bootloader

Hello, thanks for all the help.
Am I using ADB AND FASTBOOT or SDK to put recovery.img in the same folder as fastboot.exe on computer
sorry a bit confused on what you are asking
after downloading the sdk package you will find a folder probably under platform tools with adb and fastboot .exe in it
this is the folder you want the recovery image
this is also the folder you want to open cmd
right click in the folder and choose open comand here
then you should be ready to use fastboot
(another option is to change enviromenta variables so you dont need to worry about what folder fastboot is in in the future but not necessary right now)

What method do u suggest to regain Root?
Hello
I recently started the root process by unlocking my bootloader utilizing the HTCDev Method with S-On (HBOOT- 2.18.0001). Now I'm unlocked! The next step (I guess) is to flash a custom recovery which I'm having difficulty doing. Granted, there are several ways to install a custom recovery. I utilized two of those ways, 1) Through Bootloader and 2) via ROM Manager; both have proved unsuccessful for me.
The Bootloader way - -
I placed PC36IMG.zip on the root of my sd card.
Selected FastBoot
Got a response, "Main Version is older! Update Fail!" Do you want to reboot device?"
Via Rom Manager - -
Download "Rom Manager" from the Android market
Select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
Result, An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!
Not sure what I'm doing wrong, can anyone help me install a custom recovery?

You don't have to select fastboot.
Just put the recovery on your sd card, not in any folders.
make sure it's named pc36img.zip
Boot to recovery (Hold Volume down and power until hboot shows up)
It'll scan, find the file and ask you to update, hit yes
I advise this recovery: PC36IMG_ra-supersonic-4.3-smelkus-tmdirt2.zip

Don't use ROM Manager for flashing alternate recoveries, btw. It's based on Clockwork Mod, which isn't a good recovery for the EVO
Ok. Will try later tonight and will let you know the outcome.

You have to get the .img of your recovery and place it where you have your android sdk aka adb and fast boot and place them in the same directory. Then power down to the boot loader on your phone then using the volume keys select fast boot. Plug your phone into your PC. In a command prompt navigate to where your fastboot file is and type fast boot flash recovery (name of recovery image).img

You have to extract the recovery image out of the pc36img.zip file
Sent from my EVO 4G using xda app-developers app
Windows hides file extensions for known file types. What this means is that there is a hidden .zip at the end of your pc36img.zip so windows actually sees the file as pc36img.zip.zip
take the .zip you can see off of the file and try again - or I suppose you could change the command to reflect the extra .zip, but thats not really the "right" way to do it.
And if you are tyring to flash it directly with the phone that wont work either for two reasons 1) your phone does not recognize a file named.zip.zip also 2) if you are unlocked but s-on you cant flash that way, it needs to be done with fastboot. My phone is unlocked s-on and flashing the recovery was the hardest step to figure out because most guys decide to go full s-off and dont realize what the issue is...
It looks like you already got fastboot working so try this. Rename the recovery to "recovery.img" then the fastboot command would be
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
or if you dont rename the recovery file:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery (whatever the filename is)
you may also have to tell window to show file extensions for known file types, not sure how to do that in win 7, but im sure google does.
Same way you do it in every version of Windows.
Control Panel/Folder Options
OP, what software version are you on? If you're on version 5.07, the custom recoveries written for the older version (4.56, I think) won't work. Captain Throwback actually wrote two newer recoveries for the newer software version. I had the same problem with the error "Main Version is Older", until I flashed the new recovery. Also, I was UNLOCKED S-ON Hboot 2.18 and flashed the recovery through the bootloader without any issues. The new recoveries should be in the guide for rooting with Hboot 2.18. Just place the recovery file on the root of your SD card, make sure it's named PC36IMG.zip, then enter the bootloader. When it asks if you want to update, press the corresponding key for 'yes', and the new recovery will be installed.

1. Flash 4ext recovery as PB99IMG through hboot. Read this for the download and instructions.
2. After you have successfully flashed the 4ext recovery, partition your sd card using this guide. Start at step [4]

If you have a micro sd card adapter you could use that and a PC to copy it over.
If you dont have one, use fastboot to flash the recovery.img instead of using the PB99IMG method. Heres how:
1. Setup fastboot/adb on your PC using this guide. Install these drivers as well.
2. Download the 4ext recovery image from here, and put it into your android-sdk/platform-tools/ directory
3. Boot the phone into the bootloader and from there use the volume keys and power to go into fastboot mode. Then plug it into your PC
4. Open command prompt and use the following command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

At which step? Try a different usb port, preferably the ones on the back if you are on a desktop since they are directly connected to the motherboard.
Also remember the command is "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" . You need recovery twice. The first one is to tell fastboot which partition to flash it to.
