[Q] installing custom roms

hi...
can any1 tell me how to install custom roms using pc...........
i have searched the forum....but couldnt find any answer.................

General Method:
- find, download and copy a flashable rom called "fullwipe 1.3" to the sd
- copy the zip with the rom you want to load in it to your sd card
- reboot into cwm recovery
- install zip from sd card
- choose the fullwipe 1.3 zip
- install
- then choose the rom's zip
- install
- reboot
wait for it to load. there you go.
For more advanced rom's, you must make directory's on your sd card for them to work properly. Follow instructions posted by the Rom's developer for proper installation.

I try booting into recovery but, display goes blank & has a red triangle symbol & after many minutes nothing happens..... can some inform me of the step I may have missed or something i can do to verify that i have the device set up properly.

I can appreciate that, but I need to know what to do. I try to do that & i get an error while attempting to run privileged commands. Flashing sounds all great but I cant seem to get it to do anything in recovery... error issues trying to do that, or anything else, I also have super user update issues that say they put a recovery image on the sd card & to go boot that from within recovery.
Just hoping to find out why i cant do the simple things everyone speaks of.

Well if you can't flash recovery from Rom Manager then there's something wrong with your root privileges or s-offs... Just to make things clear, how did you try to flash the recovery?

AT THE TOP OF THE BOOTLOADER IT MUST SAY "... ENG S-OFF RL" FOR THIS TO WORK
With the device connected, boot into bootloader and select FASTBOOT and press power once.
It will now show FASTBOOT USB, and give you 4 options.
Download the newest 4.x.x.x version of the cwm recovery from the dev section.
Download My Toolkit and Extract to C:\
In the recovery zip that you downloaded from the dev thread, find the "recovery.img" and extract it to the RESOURCE folder of my toolkit. (make sure its only the recovery.img and not the folders it sits in)
open up a command prompt (windows key + R, type "cmd" and hit enter)
type in: cd "C:\HTC ACE TOOLKIT\RESOURCE" and hit enter.
the prompt should now be in that directory.
now type in the following EXACTLY and press enter afterwards:

The BOOTLOADER SAYs "... ENG S-OFF but no RL @ the end
Can someone instruct me to what I may have done wrong? I know if I try to s-off or ENG-off I now get a connection problem but the first time I tried it seemed to work properly.

well, in that toolkit i told you to download is a command script that does pretty much what I told you do to for the recovery.
Since you and I have the exact same phone I recommend grabbing the radio from the 2.52 korean build (Radio_12.59.60.26U_26.11.04.21_M), and the rill's as well.
Here is the radio and ril (first 2 links, download via the dropbox links): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996630
make sure you're in bootloader > fastboot and it says FASTBOOT USB on the screen
take a radio.img from within the zip and drop it into the resource folder and then run the shorcut in the toolkit.
It will now flash the radio to your phone and reboot.
Now with the rill's you flash via cwm recovery, from the RIL zip you downloaded, off your sd card in the same way you would flash a rom.

I would Like to thank you for your help & support, I was a the step of having fastboot usb And on my pc I unziped the radio And droped the image in the resource folder, a window pops up (disk burner) only option to choose is DVD R Drive.... do I have to have the SD card unmouted as a disk drive to the computer?

The phone should be in bootloader under "fastboot" so the highlighted area will say FASTBOOT USB (since your phone is connected to your pc).
If radio.img is in the RESOURCE folder of my toolkit, go back to the main folder (HTC ACE TOOLKIT) and just double click the "Flash Radio" shorcut.

Changed Rom
Changed rom last night & wanted to know weather I should flash the "rill's" & "radio" each time I change roms. I just did the radio now so hope that cures the tinny sound, also it sounded kinda tinny just playing music, is there a patch or something else to do or is all that fixed in the radio?
Any suggestion on roms to try? using Revolution HD right now.

[HOWTO]Unlock, Root, and install CWR Galaxy Nexus with Ubuntu Linux or Linux Mint 12

warnning: any damage you do to your phone following these directions is your responsibility. Assume you warranty is void if your are rooted.
I used the information koush provided here and info birdman provided here and adopted it in Ubutnu Linux 11.10. I hit some bumps along the way using my Linux box so I decided to write this for those of us not using OS's made by the darkside This should also work with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS just fine.
All this should work with Linux Mint 12 also.
1- Set up Android SDK, adb, and fastboot in Ubuntu Linux using the links in my signature. I can't stress how useful and easy it is to set adb and fastboot in your "path" so you can easily use it from any prompt. The links explain it. Take your time with that and it will payoff for all your devices. Here is the guide I wrote http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19446284&postcount=62
STOP NOW! EVERYTHING INCLUDING YOUR PERSONAL FILES, PICTURES, AND VIDEOS WILL BE ERASED WHEN YOU UNLOCK/ROOT THIS DEVICE. It does not have a physical SD card. Very annoying. Use Dropbox or Google+ to backup everything.
2- on your phone, go to settings/Developer Options and check the box for USB Debugging
3-connect your phone, fire up a terminal, and type:

You should get the serial number of your device appear. If not, unplug, reboot phone, re-attach the phone to your computer and try again. If you still do not get your device's serial number, go back to step 1 and make sure everything is setup correctly.
4- Now download Clockwork Recovery from here

(make sure it's the CDMA one (toro). The GSM one is called maguro and steps should be the same)
and su.zip from here

5-Turn the phone off, hold both Volume up and Volume Down and press the power button. You should come to a screen that has a big arrow and some writings at the bottom (fastboot). Last line should say Locked state.
6- Connect your phone to your computer, fire up a terminal and type:

your phone and its serial number should appear just as it did using adb above. adb will not work here of course. If you don't see your device, go to step one. I guess you can download the fastboot for linux and cd to that directory and do it but I like to have it setup on my computer.

7- Now for the stuff that voids your warranty: Type

fastboot oem unlock
and enter. Look at your phone now, use the Volume up to choose YES and press the power button to accept. It should say that you are unlocked and fastboot is in good state.
9-use the volume up to change the value appearing in the arrow to recovery and press the power button to accept. You are taken to laying down android with a red triangle. This is the stock recovery. Now carefully press the volume up, volume down, and the power button to get to a menu. Choose wipe data and factory reset. 2 things: I had a hard time getting to the menu. Do it a few times and try pressing the power button JUST a fraction of a second earlier than the 2 volume buttons. Also wiping and resetting takes a few minutes, be patient.
10-you are now unlocked. Turn the phone off ( I pulled battery), go to fastboot screen by holding volume up, down and power button. Connect your phone to your computer and make sure it is recognized by typing:

If it is, change directory to where you downloaded clockwork recovery. If you didn't change it, it should be the Download directory (remember it's case sensitive):

11- Time to re-write your recovery:

fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.5.0.4-toro.img
Please make sure you use common sense here when it comes to file names. If the file you downloaded has a different name or version, change it in the code above. I guess you can put the fastboot file in that location also to be used if you do not have it setup as in step 1. I'm not positive how and if that would work. Downloading and installing the wrong file is a mistake that may cause harm to your phone.
12- Use the vol up/down to point the big arrow toward recovery, push the power button to get to Cloclwork Recovery. Once you confirm you have CWR, reboot the phone normally and let Android OS create all the folders it needs. Once at start up screen, pull the battery to turn phone off, and then get to bootloader by holding vol up/down and power button in. Use the vol up/down to point the big arrow on sceen toward recovery. While in recovery, make sure your terminal prompt still shows the Downloads directory (or where the su and recovery files were downloaded to). Now type: (note the space between zip and /data)

adb push su.zip /data/media
this will put the su.zip file in the root of your virtual sd card.
You are still in recovery, reboot into recovery to refresh the file list by typing this

adb reboot recovery
Now go ahead and install su.zip through clockwork recovery's menus. Pretty self explanatory (choose zip from sd card). The su.zip should be now in the root of your virtual sd card.
That's all. You are now unlocked and rooted. Reboot. Make sure you install the paid versions of rom manager, titanium backup, and update superuser app.
13- Download Rom Manager and flash the recovery again (top choice). This will erase the install-recovery.sh file and keeps your CWR at each boot. You do not have to do step 14 if you do this. I will leave step 14 here just in case someone needs it.
14-When you are back in the fastboot screen. DO NOT reboot the phone here. There maybe a file that re-writes the recovery to stock if the phone is rebooted. Your phone may or may not have this file. of the two GN I have, one did and one did not at this step(may have been erased). The file is reovery.sh and is located in /system/etc/ . You need to either rename it or delete it.
While in fastboot and after you flashed CWR, use the Volume up and Down to change the arrow's value to recovery and press the power button. You should now see the familiar Clockwork recovery. In recovery, you can use adb (you can't in fastboot of course). You need to rename that file, use these steps in terminal: (If you see no file/folder found message, you know you do not have this file)

step 1 fires up adb, step 2 allows you to change permissions and read and write, and step 3 renames it. You can now unplug the phone.
Again, you can also get rid of this file by flashing the clcokwork recovery in Rom Manager or using the paid app root explorer to rename the file.

I find I need to run fastboot commands with sudo or su into root before it will work. Same for you, or misconfig on my side?

I'm not sure. How did you setup your adb and fastboot? I did not have to sudo for fastboot commands. What OS are you running?

Hey loveubuntu, I have a question.
I'm at Step 12, and I'm in recovery and when I run adb push su.zip /data/media, it isn't finding any devices. When I run adb devices, the device isn't listed.
Any advice?

were you able to see the device in the previous steps 3, 6 and 10 and now you don't?
Things that come to mind is:
1- Do you have the usb debugging checked?
2- unplug and replug the device and see if it works.
3- don't forget the samsung recovery file install-recovery.sh. If the phone is rebooted you may have re-written your recovery and have to start over. Then reboot the phone and go to rom manager and reflash the recovery (first option). This will take care of the install-recovery.sh file.

3, 6, & 9...check.
I rebooted my phone by pulling the battery and I still can't get adb to see the device. The install-recovery.sh? I don't remember reading anything about that.
In step 12 it says to let the phone reboot into the Android OS, but it's now back at factory reset, as that's what we did earlier in the instructions. As soon as it boots into the Android OS, adb lists the device.
At that point, since I'm in the AOS, I downloaded Astro File Manager and tried to put su.zip in the /cache folder, I think that's the folder that the clockwork recovery mod folder sees, and I don't have permission. I was hoping I could cheat and just drag & drop instead of pushing it. BUT...I did try the command adb push su.zip /media/play and I get permission denied. I'm guessing I don't have permission, even as sudo, to move the file to /data/media.

Okay I finally got it!
I didn't wait long enough for the Android OS to boot up. I finally was able to move the .zip file, but I couldn't find where /data/media was. So I let the OS boot up, removed the battery, went back into recovery, moved the zip file, and it was finally listed.

Ordered a Galaxy Nexus too, will definitely be using this guide. Windows guides are confusing.

This step is confusing. While in recovery should be replaced by "Hit Power button to enter ClockworkMod Recovery"
Otherwise people may mis-interpret by "Stay in fastboot and position the big arrow on top to Recovery Mode"
In my case (GNex GSM stock JB 4.11):
adb push su.zip /data/media
or
adb push su.zip /sdcard
did copy su.zip successfully but could not be listed by ClockworkMod Recovery menu when selecting "choose zip from sd card". I had to do this:

And, within the ClockWorkMod Recevery menu, select "choose zip from sd card"
Land on another screen where I could navigate to Alarms folder and see the su.zip there.
Now go ahead and install su.zip through clockwork recovery's menus. Pretty self explanatory (choose zip from sd card). The su.zip should be now in the root of your virtual sd card.

Sorry for being picky but personally, it is NOT self explanatory for me. I was expecting a menu item in CWM Recovery menu to say "Install su.zip". Actually you must navigate in the file system and select the su.zip yourself. Ok, may be that seems obvious now that I know what to do. But on the moment, I was worried I screwed up something because I needed to do some extra manipulations while you said that should be "self explanatory".

What is that top choice? Do you mean restart from the top at step #1? If you need to reflash again CWN, would it be simpler to restart from Step 10 instead of going back to the top?
And BTW, what is the reason to reflash the CWM Recovery again just after you have successfully flashed it at Step 12? Could that be #13 and #14 are some steps of an older guide which no longer apply now but you forgot to remove?
Sorry for the silly question but I am rather lost. After all that hardwork, when I attempt to Update SuperUser, it failed on the line "Gaining root access ..." What is the reason and how to fix that? FOUND ANSWER: the su.zip given in the post is Superuser 3.07 which is outdated, It is probably buggy. Replaced it by SuperSU 0.94 and it works perfect: http://download.chainfire.eu/204/SuperSU/

worked like a charm.. if you have problem using fastboot, just cd to the folder with fastboot and run it like this:

sudo ./fastboot "command"
it will require your password and then work normally, seems like it need super user permissions.
Also for new user: to avoid writing a command or a folder name manually just push the TAB button, it will autocomplete the word if it's unique in that folder

HTC One X won't boot

I am relatively new to the android rooting scene and have installed a file from zip using clockwork recovery to remove the 3 dot menu from applications but afterward my phone now doesn't boot, its just stuck at the HTC ONE screen i have tried factory reset from clockwork and it didn't work. i am wiling to do anything even if everything is erased and if it could be mac friendly even better but anything is fine

I guess you are on a stock rooted rom?
Seems the version provided in the thread was incompatible with the stock rom version your are currently on:
A few solutions:
1. Search a custom rom in the development threads and flash it, choose an ICS rom though if its a sense rom..flashing a jellybean rom is a bit more advanced and isnt suggested for beginners.
2. If you know which stock rom your are using (1.28, 1.29 or 2.17) you can search for a corresponding rom and push/flash just the android.policy.jar from it back to yoru device - thats the file taht got overwritten when you flashed the 3dot removal zip.
3. If you got a nandroid backup, just revert to your backup in recovery.
...there are a few other solutions, which requires relocking your bootloader etc.
IF your are already rooted I would suggest to flash a custom rom, this is the easiest way to get your oen x back to live and running a custom rom can bring a lot of advantages: better battery life, smoother UI and a lot of stuff that enhances the user experience on the One X.

Restore a nandroid from before you flashed the mod. Or find your relevant ruu, relock your bootloader and run the ruu from your pc

Accessing sd card even if device does not boot is still possible, using adb in recovery mode.
If You have cwm recovery flashed, just boot into recovery, if you dont flash revocery and boot into it.
If You are unable to flash recovery do direct boot into recovery as follows:
You need fastboot binaries and recovery image
1. reboot device into fastboot
2. open command window ( cmd, bash, whatever )
3. use this command "fastboot.exe boot recovery.img" where recovery.img is filename for recovery image
4. You device should be now in recovery mode.
Now, for the magic
You need adb binaries.
1. open command window
2. type "adb devices" this should show device id confirming adb's ability to communicate with device
3. using recovery on the phone mount sdcard
assuming You use clockworkmod recovery:

Thanks so much i have spent hours on end searching the web for a fix originally it said that i couldn't mount the sd card but i tried anyway and it worked but thanks a lot

Hi there, I am trying to follow these instructions but when i type adb devices I dont get a device listed at all, please help as I flashed the boot.img right before I was about to install a new rom but the rom had errors and so the installation was aborted and now im stuck in an eternal boot loop.
please help!

ADB commands only work in recovery or when you're booted in Android (not possible in your case). What you need to do is put your phone in fastboot mode and get into recovery from there (plenty of info on how to do that available on these forums).
Once you're in recovery mode ADB devices list should show your device and then follow the rest of those instructions.
If you can't get into fastboot from your bootloop force phone off by holding power button for 5 second, then once off hold volume down only and phone should boot in fastboot

This method is pretty simple. Flash recovery, flash superuser.zip.
Step 1.
Ensure you are HTC Unlocked
Step 2.
Download superuser zip
Download Recovery Image
Step 3.
Open command prompt where you put the recovery image
Step 4.
Reboot your device to fastboot
Step 5.
Run the command "fastboot flash recovery twrprecovery.img" without quotes
Step 6.
On your phone choose the hboot option then the recovery option
Step 7.
Now in recovery choose the mount option and select mount sdcard
Step 8.
Copy superuser.zip to your sdcard
Step 9.
Unmount sd card and hit the back button
Step 10.
Choose install and select the superuser.zip and slide the bar to flash it
Step 11.
Reboot and profit.

HTC Unlocked = Bootloader is unlocked?
Not to take away from the OP, but i created a guide for a guy here at work and thought others might benefit from it.
Unlock Bootloader and Root
Unlocking your bootloader will wipe all data from your phone. Meaning you will loose everything make a backup.
Step 1: ADB Installation Instructions. NOTE:You must have ADB installed on your PC even if you use method 2b to unlock the bootloader. You will need adb to install recovery in Step 4.
1. Go to http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html and download the sdk.
2. Follow installation instructions found here. Note: This is not a forum for this device DO NOT do anything but the adb installation on your system.​Step 2a: Download software from HTC to allow your bootloader to be unlocked.
1. Go to http://www.htcdev.com/
2. Login to the website. NOTE: Register for an account if you haven’t already. You must provide a valid email address.
3. Select “All Other Supported Models” from the drop down list and click “Begin Unlock Bootloader”
4. Follow online instructions.

6. If all goes well you are now rooted. Select reboot system to restart phone.​There is some very good information here but its spread out pretty thin. Guides IMHO are very usefull to fill the gap between devs/powerusers and the newbs.Most people that come here have a hard time with the things we take for granted such as adb commands, or adb its self (most will be setting it up for the first time). I tried my best to put it in a knowledge base that everyone can understand if for some reason you do not understand what i was trying to say please ask. I don't own this phone, just helped a friend root his, but if you need to get ahold of me pm me. I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

I'm questioning it prior to the old HTC G1, once you ROOTED the phone and flashed a ROM you'd loose the ROOT access.
I've got it installed, it seems to be official and unrecoverable until you unROOT the device itself!

Hi,
It's not working.
I'm not a noob. I've rooted my Xoom and GS4 but this method for the HTC One VX is not working.
I've downloaded the 2 files.
Extracted the .zip to the root of C:\ and put the twrprecovery.img in the root of C:\ drive also.
I have my phone set to USB Debugging, and rebooted the phone into fastboot USB mode.
Connected my device.
I launch CMD and then type cd.., cd.. until i'm at the root level of C:/.
Then I type "fastboot flash recovery twrprecovery.img" without the quotes.
And I get this:
'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
I've searched other threads and other forums and read that I need to have the HTCDriver.exe installed.
So I installed it, rebooted the computer, and tried it all again and the same thing.
'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
Anyone have any answers?

Are you opening the cmd prompt in the dir where you have your adb and fastboot files you must have the recovery.img in the same folder.

Just checking---do you have the android toolkit installed? If so, you need to put the image in the same directory as fastboot--not at the root of C drive....
I realize that I just re-worded one of the posts above, but at C drive's root won't work.....

The files are not in the same folder ,

What is the reasoning for this extra SU zip? If you install twrp, then reboot into recovery, then tell twrp to reboot to system, it will ask to install SU and then BAM, SU installed, no issues. You just download it.
Edit: This version of TWRP is very old and crashed my phone a lot. Might want to update the link to a newer image 2.6 twrp.

[Q] SD card appears empty, and phone is stuck on load screen.

A buddy of mine rooted my phone after I had so much difficulty trying to do it myself. I went to update my ROM this afternoon and was brought to the white HTC loading screen with no more activity. Tried getting into my phone to put a new ROM on the SD card and nothing comes up on the SD card folder. I am able to put a ROM in the empty SD card folder and install it, but than it just gets stuck on the same screen as before. I'm really just in the dark here and that friend isn't any longer available to help me out. Thank you all in advance, hopefully this is fixable. I am quite concerned. I should add that I would like to ultimately just get back to stock and be done with things I don't understand so as to avoid this happening again.

Did you flash the boot.img from the rom.zip? These are the correct steps to flash a ROM:
1. Flash the boot.img from ROM.zip via fastboot. "fastboot flash boot boot.img" then "fastboot erase cache"
2. Boot into recovery and use THIS by flashing it.
3. Now flash the ROM.zip and then gapps.zip via recovery.
4. Reboot.

I have tried flashing the boot.img but when I go to put the file onto my phone I don't have any folders such as the boot.img folder to put it in. As for flashing the link above, I am taking a stab in the dark here but I assume that I download that link, extract it and place it on my SD card somewhere. I'm not sure as to how I flash it. Sorry... I really have tried learning the ropes of this, but I can't seem to grasp it.

I somehow now have access to TWRP on my device... I am so confused.

1. First you need to download a custom ROM like this one : http://tunsd.de/downloads/ICJ/IceColdJelly421/aokp_ICJ422-V3.0.zip , Gapps : http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip and Super wipe script: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0y31poo1kiaif4y/Super wipe script.zip
2. Open the aokp_ICJ422-V3.0.zip with winrar/winzip and extract the boot.img and place it in the "fastboot" folder in your PC. (since you have already unlocked/rooted it, I guess you know which is the fastboot folder)
3. Connect your Phone to your PC and make a new folder named "ROM" and put the aokp_ICJ422-V3.0.zip , gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip and Super wipe script.zipin it.
4. Turn of your phone. Now hold the power button and volume down button together until the bootloader screen pops up. (White screen with 3 android figures at the bottom)
5. Now select "fastboot" using the volume up/down keys and press power button once you highlight it to get into fastboot. Now connect your phone again to your PC.
6. You will hear a sound on your pc and on the screen it will say "fastboot USB".
7. Now open fastboot folder on your PC and press shift key and simultaneously rightclick and click on "open command prompt here".
8. type the following lines:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot erase cache
9. Now disconnect your phone and head back to "HBOOT" and then select "Recovery".
10. Now go to "install zip from sd" and select "ROM" folder which you had created earlier on the phone.
11. Now select "super wipe script" and install it. After everything is done you will come back to choose zip from sd.
12. Now again navigate to ROM folder and select "aokp_ICJ422-V3.0.zip" and install it. and then install "gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip".
13. Now go back and select "reboot system now".
14. If you have done all the above steps correctly, you will boot into IceColdJelly Rom!

Irrespective whether you have CWM or TWRP... Steps will be similar for flashing the ROM... Just the names of the buttons/options will be different!

Put the recovery.img in your fastboot folder. Boot your phone in fastboot mode and fire the following lines in CMD.
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
Now you can follow the steps which I have given blindly!

My phone was unlocked and rooted from a different PC so I have no fastboot folders or any knowledge on what a fastboot folder is.

Download HTC Sync Manager: (this is required so that correct drivers are installed on your PC)

After download is complete, install it and restart your pc.
Download Fastboot Folder:

Extract it somewhere on your pc.
Now look at my previous post and follow the steps...

What error message do you get while you flash?
what is your HBoot version?
Go to bootloader(Power button+Volume Down)... once you get to that white screen, you should be able to see your hboot version... something like hboot 1.39...
