Can't Flash a custom recovery (Rooted with HTCDev) 2.3.5 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I recently started the root process by unlocking my bootloader utilizing the HTCDev Method with S-On (HBOOT- 2.18.0001). Now I'm unlocked! The next step (I guess) is to flash a custom recovery which I'm having difficulty doing. Granted, there are several ways to install a custom recovery. I utilized two of those ways, 1) Through Bootloader and 2) via ROM Manager; both have proved unsuccessful for me.
The Bootloader way - -
I placed PC36IMG.zip on the root of my sd card.
Selected FastBoot
Got a response, "Main Version is older! Update Fail!" Do you want to reboot device?"
Via Rom Manager - -
Download "Rom Manager" from the Android market
Select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
Result, An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!
Not sure what I'm doing wrong, can anyone help me install a custom recovery?

Have you tried a fastboot flash?

You don't have to select fastboot.
Just put the recovery on your sd card, not in any folders.
make sure it's named pc36img.zip
Boot to recovery (Hold Volume down and power until hboot shows up)
It'll scan, find the file and ask you to update, hit yes
I advise this recovery: PC36IMG_ra-supersonic-4.3-smelkus-tmdirt2.zip
http://d-h.st/tbF
Don't use ROM Manager for flashing alternate recoveries, btw. It's based on Clockwork Mod, which isn't a good recovery for the EVO

Ok. Will try later tonight and will let you know the outcome.

First off I'm a noob...Im working on a metro flashed evo 4g on 2.2froyo and metrodroid 2.2 rom.It has some sort of hboot recovery and green clockworkmod recovery 2.?.? which both seem to work horribly...I'm trying to 1. Install latest 3g compatible android os Gb or Ics? 2.Flash a better recovery...one that works. 3. Flash a nice metro rom cyanogen or like that.
Ive read so many posts in different forums and couldn't find a case quite like mine or a up to date link.If someone could help me with recovery I think I can make due. Any other help is greatly appreciated

Hey
I followed your advice step by step and nothing happened. I'm in HBOOT settings and it just stays on the white screen with HBOOT and FASTBOOT highlighted in Blue.
I put the img file on my sd card (no folders) and renamed it (pc36img.zip).
Here are my specs as they read on HBOOT Screen

You have to get the .img of your recovery and place it where you have your android sdk aka adb and fast boot and place them in the same directory. Then power down to the boot loader on your phone then using the volume keys select fast boot. Plug your phone into your PC. In a command prompt navigate to where your fastboot file is and type fast boot flash recovery (name of recovery image).img

Thanks, but here's the thing... 1. I've tried flashing other roms/recoveries on this phone via the recovery thats there now and the zip file is never in the folder where it should be (downloads) when I go to choose the file to flash its never there just some other unrelated zip. 2. The root or metrodroid v2.2/kernel that's there now took away all file managing apps (think free/stock files app) I can't even use appsaver to l load it...because theres no way to manage the files...yay! And 3. Theres no data/mms...I plan on flashing the fix along with a custom rom/kernel...it's the recovery! Please help thanks in advance.

You have to extract the recovery image out of the pc36img.zip file
Sent from my EVO 4G using xda app-developers app

Windows hides file extensions for known file types. What this means is that there is a hidden .zip at the end of your pc36img.zip so windows actually sees the file as pc36img.zip.zip
take the .zip you can see off of the file and try again - or I suppose you could change the command to reflect the extra .zip, but thats not really the "right" way to do it.
And if you are tyring to flash it directly with the phone that wont work either for two reasons 1) your phone does not recognize a file named.zip.zip also 2) if you are unlocked but s-on you cant flash that way, it needs to be done with fastboot. My phone is unlocked s-on and flashing the recovery was the hardest step to figure out because most guys decide to go full s-off and dont realize what the issue is...
It looks like you already got fastboot working so try this. Rename the recovery to "recovery.img" then the fastboot command would be
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
or if you dont rename the recovery file:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery (whatever the filename is)
you may also have to tell window to show file extensions for known file types, not sure how to do that in win 7, but im sure google does.

Same way you do it in every version of Windows.
Control Panel/Folder Options

OP, what software version are you on? If you're on version 5.07, the custom recoveries written for the older version (4.56, I think) won't work. Captain Throwback actually wrote two newer recoveries for the newer software version. I had the same problem with the error "Main Version is Older", until I flashed the new recovery. Also, I was UNLOCKED S-ON Hboot 2.18 and flashed the recovery through the bootloader without any issues. The new recoveries should be in the guide for rooting with Hboot 2.18. Just place the recovery file on the root of your SD card, make sure it's named PC36IMG.zip, then enter the bootloader. When it asks if you want to update, press the corresponding key for 'yes', and the new recovery will be installed.

revolutionary help!!

so i have it on my phone and everything but when its in the boot screen its saying that the img files arent there i dont know what im doing wrong
did you put the file on the root of the card? is there two .zip extensions?
which two files? what are the links? I just want to make sure i got the right ones and which folder is the root of the phone?
/mnt/sdcard
any file in there would be in the root of your sd card
yea i put everything on that but my phone keeps on saying it dosent find the images what are the links for those images? sorry
What step in the root process are you exactly? Why are you trying to flash something in the bootloader?
im on the processes where my phone is suppose to find this PC36IMG.zip
The best way to flash recovery after revolutionary use is via fastboot.i downloaded the fastboot HTC drivers, theyre listed on revolutionary wiki. Placed the recovery.img in tge same folder as the fastboot,at least thats what I did, then I issued fastboot flash recovery recovery.img via Command line in windows.you have to boot into bootloader/HBoot mode, and wait for it to scan then click the power button once to get to fastboot usb.thats on windows...hope this helps.
Evo 4G Synergy RC2
yea idk fastboot is not reading the zip or image file i have no idea why
what zip are you trying to flash and where did you download it from? according to the guides for revolutionary, you do not need to flash a pc36img in hboot.
Its not a zip its an img file.youre directly overwriting recovery via fastboot.you issue those commands from your computer not your phone.theres a thread here on xda that tells the process more in detail..if I can find it ill link yoy
Evo 4G Synergy RC2
What recovery are you running? Clockwork? And did you install it with revolutionary? If you did all you have to do is
1. boot into the boot loader (power off pull the battery power on with volume down)
2. Select recovery (This will reboot the phone and you will be brought into recovery mode).
3. When you get to clockwork, select install zip from sdcard.
4. Choose zip from sdcard and select your zip file thats on the root of the sdcard.
5. It should then go through a list of things while it installs.
The zip for root can be found here (this is the link from the install page):
http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip
To Install clockwork you need to download
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.5-supersonic.img
The rename it to:
PC36IMG.zip
Boot into recovery and it should attempt to install it. NOTE This will only work if you have s-Off and have run revolutionary.
This can also be done with AR.
@tnerb once s-off is there you have to flash CWM or other custom recovery via fastboot first.then you flash the superuser zip via custom recovery

1. True S-OFF is a permanent type of S-OFF. There are ways to do it temporarily. It looks like yours is perm S-OFF.
2. From the instructions that you followed, did you have to put a PC10IMG file onto the root of your SD card? If that file is still there, the bootloader will always look to that file and not allow anything else to be done.
3. Clockwork Mod will not show in an apps list. It replaces the recovery of your phone. It is not an app. As for ROM manager, I'm not sure what to tell you. Maybe if you can pull logs from your phone we can work on that.
4. Just because S-OFF shows up does not mean you are rooted. If you flashed the stock T-Mobile ROM then chances are you lost root privileges. You can do a quick check by looking in your app drawer for the "Superuser" app. If it is there, you are still rooted. If not, most likely you are not.
Oh! your smart…Yes PC10IMG is still on SD card.
As is superuser.apk and clockworkmod and titamium backup
"Superuser" app is not in app drawer
how would i pull the logs
take the image off sd card and you will be allowed back into recovery, then do a full wipe and flash rom of choice via recovery
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
ok took off image and it allowed me into recovery now i have a cool picture of the phone with a red triangle and exclamation point
update: pulled battery turned it on using only power button goes to tmobile stock screen and works fine. do i need to re root and flash new rom?
need to flash a custom recovery again via fastboot. get the .img from somewhere in xda (or google it)
put recovery.img in the same folder as fastboot.exe on computer
connect your phone via usb and boot into fastboot
open cmd on computer change directories to where fastboot and recvoery image are
type fastboot devices (just to make sure its working)
then type
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
then
fastboot reboot bootloader
now boot into recovery
now flash rom of choice via recovery

Hello, thanks for all the help.
Am I using ADB AND FASTBOOT or SDK to put recovery.img in the same folder as fastboot.exe on computer
sorry a bit confused on what you are asking
after downloading the sdk package you will find a folder probably under platform tools with adb and fastboot .exe in it
this is the folder you want the recovery image
this is also the folder you want to open cmd
right click in the folder and choose open comand here
then you should be ready to use fastboot
(another option is to change enviromenta variables so you dont need to worry about what folder fastboot is in in the future but not necessary right now)

did you get the recovery in an .img or a .zip? if its zipped extracted it

Ive been reading about eng hboot as mine shows "s-off" not "eng s-off" but I don’t know how it applies to this.
did you follow the htc official dev bootloader unlock?
or did you root following the wiki?
if you did the htc way you are not true soff and you will need to do this first. look for nipqers directions

[Q] Revolutionary Rooted stuck in boot loop no recovery

Help. My phone is stuck in a boot loop. No recovery, won't take one even when I flash multiple ways. Won't take a rom. S-off. Was rooted with Revolutionary, but since it wouldn't take a ROM or recovery I tried to unroot. Was able to remove the "Revolutionary" watermark, change hboot from 6.16 to 2.16.0001. Tried installing ruu which is what removed the Revolutionary and changed back hboot.
Here's what I have now:
Supersonic evt2-3 ship s-off
hboot 2.16.0001
Radio 2.15.00.0808
Any help! Thanks.
Looks you might have to get a PC36IMG.zip on your sdcard and then flash that through bootloader
Ideally, put on a froyo PC36IMG so that rerooting is easier if you want to do it again
So what happens when you try to select Recovery from Hboot?
The advice is free....the bandwidth, not so much
Still boot looping...

All I get is the white "HTC EVO 4G" boot screen. When I flash a custom recovery, everything goes as expected, but still can't access recovery.
You will have to go through all the bootloader ruu's till you find the one that works. Good luck I had the same issue and ended up selling it on eBay and the buyer finally got it working.

S-off is nand-unlocked...run an ruu (any version), as soon as it opens, press windowsKey+R and type "%temp%" then *enter
Now sort the files by date modified and search in the most recent folders for a file called "rom.zip", as soon as you find that copy it to your desktop
Rename the rom.zip to "PC36IMG.zip" and place it on the root of your phones sdcard (you may need to reformat your sdcard to FAT32, make a backup if you need to do this)
Now put the sdcard in your phone, pull out the battery and go into bootloader (VolDown+Power) , the bootloader should find it and commence the update process back to stock unrooted, follow the prompts and press power when necessary
Okay, tried that...

Tried your method using the rom from an ruu. Still s-off, although everything appeared to have updated. I've done this previously, but not extracting the rom.zip from an ruu. Each time the hboot updates, or downgrades, depending on the ruu, but s-off remains. No rom, no recovery...

Sometimes the problem is solved by wiping the recovery partition first, and then re-flashing it. To do that, you would need a Hboot where you could run fastboot commands, since you cannot boot into a Rom.
You can try upgrading your Hboot, then unlocking the bootloader using the Htcdev site, so that you can run the fastboot commands. If it fails on the new Hboot, then it can probably be flashed back to whatever Hboot you have, since you're S-OFF.
I've included the Hboot file that you would need for the upgrade. You would first run the PC36IMG file throught the bootloader, then reboot the phone. If the Hboot changes, then you should go to the Htcdev site and try to unlock the bootloader.
There are some other steps that follows, but there's no point of giving them to you now and complicating things unless the initial steps work first.

Ok. This didn't work. I was able to flash the hboot, but fastboot commands did not work. I can unlock, and relock the bootloader, flash any ruu, but s-off remains, and still unable to flash a rom or recovery.
Try this and see what happens: Unzip the fastboot.zip file in side a folder on your computer and place the recovery.img file in that same folder on your computer, then open a command prompt from that folder (shift + right click+"open command window here"). From the FASTBOOT USB menu on the phone (Hboot + click on FASTBOOT): type
fastboot erase recovery <ENTER>
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img <ENTER>
fastboot reboot-bootloader <ENTER>

[Q] Bricked or not?

Hi folks,
I tried to root my Desire HD and have done something wrong....very wrong
I installed Clockwork but before I rooted the phone and now will only go to the HTC screen and then just does nothing...no load of ROM or anything. Now I assume this is as expected since I have probably wiped everything
Booting in Recovery Mode I get the following;
***UNLOCKED***
ACE PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.00.0029
MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.14.04.28_M
eMMC-boot
Dec 22 2011,14:28:19
I have removed the Bootlock through the HTCDev website and I think my problem is that there is no ClockWork Recovery installed to allow me to choose a ROM to install.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks in advance

If you dont have custom recovery, you need to flash them first. Connect the usb, boot the devive into fastboot, and flash the recovery using command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img. That recovery.img will be your recovery file that u downloaded either cwm recovery or 4ext recovery. Just choose whatever you prefer.

Thank you - I have done this and this is the output from cmd
C:\fastboot> fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-saga.img
< waiting for device >
sending 'recovery' (4370 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.730s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 0.904s]
finished. total time: 1.634s
Following that and rebooting it just gets to the HTC Screen and that's it. Not moving any further

No...boot.img is not for replaced you hboot/bootloader of your phone..that's just replaced your boot rom including a kernel of the rom you used..
because your bootloader still S-ON (security ON)..that's why can't give you permission to installing the rom including boot/kernel at the same time..except you already had S-OFF (security OFF) on your phone bootloader..or flashing separately a boot.img extracting from your rom.zip after every installing any new custom rom it self..
if you wanna S-OFF your bootloader..you can using AAHK2 script by Phiber2000 in here..
hope you can understand what i mean..
I have a similar problem, but not quite the same. I've trolled across the internets trying to find a solution but it seems that each case of 'soft brick' is slightly different. Here's mine:
Last time I used the rooted and S-OFF DHD it was running an android 4.2 custom rom.
The phone has been sitting for a few months without being turned on... Last night I managed to get it to charge while turned off (constant orange light while plugged in) after removing the battery a few times. Then I left it charging for a couple hours to give me some juice to play around with.
Now the phone will turn on and give the HTC logo screen, but then freezes here. I can also get to HBOOT, but can't seem to load recovery. When I select recovery from HBOOT I just get a black screen. Last time I used this phone I had Clockworkmod recovery installed - but it seems to have disappeared along with the rom! I should also mention that the SD card that was in the phone last time it was used has been removed, reformatted and used in a different phone.
I've tried a few methods to flash recovery via fastboot, but I keep getting a fastboot error message saying "FAILED <remote: not allowed>".
A few forums have indicated that this error message means that I don't have S-Off. But I can confirm that HBOOT indicates that I do in fact have S-Off.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. This is driving me nuts!
Remote flash only allowed on eng hboot and unlocked bootloader. Your device must probably ship s-off thus preventing u from using fastboot command. I advice u to use the hboot patch to install recovery.

Thanks very much for your fast reply!
How do I get/use HBOOT patch? Are there any links or (noob) tutorials I could follow?
thanks again
The patch have name pd98img.zip. In that zip file will have recovery.img and android-info.txt. If there is any other files just remove them as we only want to instal recovery. The recovery.img can be downloaded in the cwm website for desire hd.
You can find the old patch hboot for desire hd,extract it and build the new patch yourself using new recovery. Then, put the zip files in the root of your sdcard, and boot the device into bootloader. The bootloader will automatically detect the zip files (if you build it correctly) and you only need to confirm the prompt given at that time. After finish, the device will reboot and you will have custom recovery installed.

Your Bootloader Security is ON (You are S-ON) ...which means in order to boot your rom ...you need to go into bootloader[VOLDOWN+Power] and Flash BOOT IMAGE VIA FASTBOOT
[GO here] : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1752270
and dont forget to say thanks (If i helped)

Thanks very much. I've managed to follow your instructions right through to where hboot says "Update Complete... Press <POWER> to reboot". Then I reboot and get stuck at the HTC logo screen, so I remove the battery (and SD) and reboot to hboot and select recovery - it then reboots to a blank screen (after the HTC logo). Any ideas why this is happening? It seems like hboot is working but not the recovery..?? I tried both of your suggestions and loaded the pd98img.zip stock, and then tried again after replacing the recovery image with updated cwm - but still blank screen when loading recovery...
Thanks again, and Happy New Year
Are you sure the recovery is the right one? Made sure it is designed for ace, which is desire hd name. Download the img file from clockworkmod website and check the integrity of the file (md5sum matching). Then rename it into recovery.img. Zip it with store compression mode with the android-info.txt file. Rename the zip file and then try to flash it again in bootloader as usual.

Now that you mention it, I'm not 100% sure that I'm using the correct pd98img.zip file to begin with. I've just gone to the cwm site to make sure I've got the correct cwm, but how do I know whether or not the pd98img.zip is the correct file? There are only two files in it - the recovery.img and the android-info.txt. Since I'm replacing the zip file, is it possible that the android-info file isn't the correct one for Desire HD/Ace?

Inside the pd98img.zip file should have 2 files named recovery.img and android-info.txt. If there is other files besides those two, remove them. From ur post I saw that u mention the files inside are pmg98.zip and android-info.txt. Replace that zip file with recovery.img file and reflash it.

Oh - sorry that was a typo (now corrected). I have been replacing the recovery.img with the cwm recovery file and re-naming it recovery.img. I can confirm that there are only two files in pd98img.zip and they are recovery.img and android-info.txt. I've been through this process a few times now and it doesn't seem to be working for me. Hboot flashes the recovery, but the phone doesn't boot to it. I've pasted a screen shot of my hboot below incase this can help diagnose my issue...
U sure u used store mode when u are zipping the file right? Weird actually. It is supposed to be working. Can u upload the zip file here?
