when I want to Nandroid on Amon_Ra's recovery, which options should I select in order to make a complete backup like Clockwork did?
Thanks In Advance,
-Will
Depends, if you want absolutely everything backed up and you have the space then check them all.
Really, there's no need to check cache, .android_secure, or sd-ext if you're just dealing with wiping your phone and not wiping your SDCARD.
I usually just check Boot, System, Wimax and Data.

Yup..i always restore apps via titanium backup...i only made one backup of wimax then copied it over, so it saves more space.

Yeah, it is best to have you wimax.img somewhere safe.
I do, have it in my dropbox but I also back it up each time just for fun.

Now dropbox is a good idea lol. And if it keeps your boat afloat, sail with it.
After Wimax etc. Are done, nands for me are what's already checked and SD ext. Since I'm using a partitioned SD card for synergy. Also you can wipe cache and dalvik cache before nand for a quicker back up.

I always backup everything except Cache
back everything up then publish your wimax key to us. lol!

I was under the impression a nandroid backup was like a full clone that you'd do on a computer. But after restoring with a nand backup there's always a ton of little settings I need to change

+1...are you performing the backup from the recovery screen or using the adb commands? What recovery are you using, CWM or RA? I know CWM was missing things when performing a wipe so maybe the same holds true for performing a NAND backup? I am using RA and I have not run into this problem.
Off the top of my head.. I always have to reset my Handcent message ringtones and Exchange account information.
Maybe I was a bit frustrated when I typed 'SO MUCH'. But it definitely misses some stuff.
I use Clockwork

Again, are you sure CWM was missing things during wipe, or are you just repeating what you've heard? I assume you're talking about dalvik-cache, and my testing shows that this is NOT true.
Oh, and I always lose my custom dictionary too.
and your backup is up-to-date?

It backs up absolutely everything. You must have used an old backup.

Well from my experiments cwm doesn't wipe dalvik. When I did a wipe and flashed fresh 0.5.3 I was stuck in loop

Yep. It's the very last thing I do before flashing a new rom
while were on topic...
so proper nandroid backing up is..
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache
wipe dalvik
THEN do nandoid backup?
or is it.. do nandroid backup first THEN do all the butt wiping?
no no no, backup first then wipe. Otherwise you are backing up a blank phone pretty much
...For OP, not sure but is it possible the application data like handcent is not stored on the phone but in the cloud? Or maybe on the sd card and it does not link the old settings file? Are you using app2sd?

Nope. Haven't tried app2sd yet
Well, then the only thing else I can offer is using titanium backup or the like. What rom are you using when you did the backup?

Did you check to see if the dalvik cache was still there after the wipe? Because it resides within the data folder, so doing a data wipe automatically wipes the dalvik-cache folder anyway.
Unless there is something else related to dalvik that is outside of the /data directory.
Are/were you using a current version of CWM?
Is it necessary to do a cache, data and delvik wipe when I am restoring a back up?
I always have back up of different ROMs and very often I try out new ROMs. I always wipe everything but is it necessary?
Actually, so do I but I'm not sure whether we need to either! I just don't want to take a chance that a residual file screws something up...

If you are restoring from a nandroid, no it is not needed. The backup restores EVERYTHING data/cache/davlik/kernel/etc...
That's good to know.
I am restoring from the nandroid backup.
I've gotten alot of errors before when restoring a sense rom from an aosp without wiping... And by errors I mean it restored fine then was unusably buggy...

Just go into recovery wipe data and cache then restore. Its not rocket science.

I don't I just restore, haven't had a problem so far
I guess sometimes people get lucky and sometimes people dont.

No, it's not rocket science, but that's not what the OP asked.
It was a valid question: is wiping needed when restoring a backup, or is it a superfluous step? No need to offer a condescending non-answer.
For what it's worth, I don't wipe before I restore a backup and have yet to run into an issue. That's not to say I'm right; just that it hasn't yet caused me headache.
Hey whats up guys?
so......Im not really new here guys, But i am new to APP2SD....i partitioned my card for the KINGDOM ROM which turned out to be really cool. Everything went GREAT with the partition, I followed VIRUS direction to the "T".......now i deleted all my old backups because i was told that some files may be corrupt and what not, so i made 2 backups of the B3 ROM from virus.....to try to make a long story short, when i restore one or the other of the backups i have, the APPS that required ROOT, tells me they cant find ROOT>....and believe me...im ROOTED LOL.....im not that lost.....i was even given a command for TE......"app2sd--cachesd"......and the PERMISSION WERE DEINED ACCROSS THE BOARD......now i can get to the titanium backup's =main screen and it shows i have APP2SD= 1.91mb........so im guess the app2sd isnt installing the apps onto my SDcard...im not sure if i have to move every app to my SDcard myself...not sure if that the issues....but to me something sounds wrong....ya know, ive deleted all the apps and re-installed them....i even installed them from amazon...NO GO....so if i RE-Flash, the apps will work...cause i setup my phone with TB.....but its after when i RESTORE my backup, that everything goes screwy...ohh and i am backing up SDtext.....and wiping it if i flash another ROM or restore a differnet backup.......Cant really find any info on anyne having this same problem....This is the first time im actually making my first thread so go easy on me LOL......thanks alots guys...I really appreciate it...
EDIT:.....ohh and all my apps sometimes show up in SU and they are allowed.....and SU is updated

I'm not sure I quite follow you, but, if you have the time, try this: after you've gotten your rom setup how you like it, reboot into recovery. Hopefully, you're using amon RA v2.3 as your recovery. If so, go to the wipe menu and wipe the cache & dalvik. After that, go to the backup/restore menu and, in addition to what is already selected to be backed up, select sdext and .android.secure. now create the backup and afterwards, reboot. Now to test it out, for back into recovery, wipe EVERYTHING in the wipe menu EXCEPT the SD card and then go to the backup/restore menu and restore the backup you just made. If using amon RA, the name of the backup *should* have a BSDEA beginning or something to that extent. Afterwards, reboot. Your system *should* restore back to the way it was without any problems.

It will be automatically activated if whichever Rom you are flashing had it cooked into it
If it's not cooked into the ROM, then it must be activated ( by flashing the script via recovery, i think....) Sorry, in kinda new to aa2sd too

well whata ya know...LOL......IT WORKED>....all my apps open wiht no problem now.....but all i did different here was wipe dalvik before i backed up....and select android secure along with SDtext.......cause all i usually select is SDtext........now the way i have been wiping could be the cause of it......i always use CAULKIN's format all....so i've benn suing that and just WIPING SDtext manually, and then restoring the backup.....that may have caused the problem as well.......well all i know is, what u told me worked.....and thats how i'll do it for now on as long as my SD is partioned.......thanks alot man....couldnt thank you enough......
Quick question here... What apps2sd app are you guys using? And how do I make it go to my partition in my sd card to act as internal memory as opposed to just the normal sd card?

You're very welcome. As for calkulin's format-all zip, I no longer use it because before flashing a rom, I wipe EVERYTHING in amon RA's (v2.3) wipe menu, EXCEPT the SD card, and I only have to do it once and I've never have a problem. Anyway, I'm glad you were able to get it taken care of. Take care and enjoy Mom's special day....

You only NEED boot, system, and data. Android secure is your apps, but I always backup and restore from titanium, so no need if you do that. Backup your wimax and make a separate backup of it as well, and copy it to your pc for safe keeping.

Correct, do the wipes I listed previously, and the sd ext [if you're partitioned].
No intentions for redundancy, but just adding my 2 pennies. I prefer Amon Ra Recovery and withing the Bootloader screen go down to recovery which is under fastboot, then you should be directed to the Recovery menu, there you should see an option labeled Backup/Restore, within this folder should be an option labeled nandroid backup. Cheers to your successful backup.
Okay, thank you good sir

Personally, I backup everything except cache. I want the restore, when I need it, to be complete, and it's worked out that way every time.
I also store all my Nandroid backups to the PC, just in case sumthin' happens to the sdcard
Here's my problem; I've never been able to have a perfect carbon copy of my nand restore that I back up. The rom restores just fine, but all my apps besides like one are gone, and gapps is all messed up, play store doesn't work, can't flash gapps over rom, just ugh. Tried restoring 3 times now, wiping a different way each time. Anyone know what I'm not doing right?
What all do you have checked to back up?
Also, no wiping is needed when you restore a backup.
The advice is free....the bandwidth, not so much

Wiping everything but sd card before I restore, other times I've tried just factory format along with cache and dalvik wipes. Same difference.

Like was said, no need to wipe before a Nand Restore. Also you need to check off sd.ext as one of the things you want to restore. That could be where all your apps are.
